ㅤ𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐄 𝐖𝐀𝐒 𝐀 𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐓 𝐎𝐅 𝐇𝐄𝐒𝐈𝐓𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 in her steps as she began to walk towards the field Taha Aki lead her to.
She ditched Jacob and his plans to have her reacquainted with Bella Swan—a move Billy fully supported her on—and after a quick shower and some more food to satisfy her ever growing appetite, she went ahead and left their house.
Sam had offered to accompany her when he'd arrived at their place as per Billy's invitation, but she was adamant she had to do this thing alone. With great hesitation on his end, Sam allowed his alpha to go face this by herself; but not without vowing to himself he'd trail her for his peace of mind.
Wearing a slightly oversized collared blue shirt and some cargo shorts paired with white socks and white sneakers, she was definitely not dressed for the Washington winter. But her body heat made her all too hot—literally—and made her sweat too much with thicker clothing, so she settled with an outfit more suited for summer.
So, the deeper she got, the more nervous she became. But an overwhelming sense of peace kept breaching her nerves, and she could only assume it had something to do with magic of some sort; something she used to not care for, not until she shifted and became the famed White Wolf.
Feeling eyes on her as she moved at a leisurely pace, she spotted some deer that stopped in their tracks, looking as though they were staring at her in wonder. It was weird for her, being looked at like a celebrity by literal wild animals. She huffed and ignored them, before rolling her eyes when she saw Sam and Jared now walking towards her.
"Oh my God," she complained as she stopped walking, glaring at the two boys who are now technically under her care and guidance. "You two have got to be kidding me."
"It felt wrong to have you face this alone," Sam defended himself, glancing at Jared who was nodding at his words animatedly. "It didn't seem right."
"I'm fine!" She huffed.
"Yeah, but we're not," Jared rebutted weakly, earning him a ferocious glare. Unlike with Sam who May has known since childhood, Jared was a bit of a passing figure. She knew of him of course, given how small their community is, but she never got close to him. Not until now. "C'mon May," he insisted, calling her by the name she preferred.
She huffed again before sighing. "Fine, you big babies."
Now the three were trudging towards the field together, with both men flanking May like bodyguards. Their sharp eyes were wary, looking around for any sign of a threat. They've been telling her all about the vampire problems in the area, and were afraid of any encounter. Though they knew she could defend herself, she's not yet encountered one at all before. They only wanted to keep her safe.
"Where exactly are we going?" Sam asked with a frown as they began walking. "All your dad said was that you're meeting someone important."
"In the middle of the woods?!" Jared exclaimed in disbelief, his youthful age obvious with the way he childishly glanced towards her with a teasing smirk. "Is it perhaps--"
"If you finish that sentence, Cameron," she began, "you're out of the pack."
He gasped, clutching his chest. "You wouldn't!"
"She wouldn't," Sam interjected. "But I'll vote to kick you out so majority wins."
"Rude!"
"I'm meeting Taha Aki!" She stated loudly, cutting their conversation off. She continued walking as the two stopped on their tracks, eyes wide and disbelieving. "He...came to me in a dream. No, I wasn't just dreaming. He said I was traveling the spirit realm, and to meet him again at this field that I've apparently been going to as a child."
Jared rushed to keep up with her, now walking backwards to face her. He nearly tripped, but regained his balance quickly as he asked, "Wait, so...you're a literal spirit warrior? And you actually met the Taha Aki?"
"I mean, I guess," she shrugged. "You know what it feels when you know you're asleep but, like, you're also awake? That's what I was feeling when I was talking to him, somewhat."
"You sure it wasn't, I don't know, lucid dreaming?" Sam wondered, jogging forward.
"Or, you know, sleep paralysis or something?" Jared wiggled his fingers at her, pretending to scare her. He didn't care for her glare, but he did trip, and he supposes that was his karma for messing with their alpha.
"None of the above," she huffed. "I just know I was in a different plane and...and we're here." May took a deep breath as she examined the field, eyes trailing the small details of the place she knew all too well. "I- I've been here before."
"What is this place?" Sam frowned, his lips pulled downwards as he too surveyed the area. "Why...I've never been here before, and I've patrolled these forests. This...this place..."
"I've never been here before either," Jared spoke up.
"Then how come...?" May trailed off, but she quickly noticed something that made her face light up. "Mom's baskets!"
The Quileute tribe was known for many things, but one thing they've always been famous for—other than the whole shapeshifting thing that was known within the Native American community—were their woven baskets and dog-hair blankets. Sarah Black, in particular, was talented at basket weaving, gifting majority of her best works to her children.
"You have been here," Jared raised his eyebrows in surprise. "But how come neither Sam and I--"
"Jared, look," Sam softly cut in, pointing towards a bundled mass on the ground. This caught May's attention, and all three of them neared to see what it was. It seemed like a cloak their ancestors used to wear, but underneath it was another basket. But what was inside surprised them.
"It's a wolf pup," May pointed out, jaw slack as she watched the small pup—that she knew would grow larger than the average dog, but still smaller than any of their wolf forms—let out a yawn as their eyes met. The puppy, with dark gray fur and a tail that was darker than the rest of its body, was alone.
Hesitantly, she reached forward, and watched in wonder as the puppy began to sniff her fingers.
"Do actual wolves like us?" Jared asked out of the blue, backing up a little when his voice startled the pup so much that it growled at him. "Guess not."
"Maybe it just doesn't like you," Sam offered. But still he also kept a safe distance, only allowing May to do what she wanted to do, but not before warning her. "You be careful."
"I'm fi--"
In surprise, Sam and Jared lurched forward to catch May whose eyes had suddenly rolled back as she collapsed. Surprisingly, the wolf pup lunged as well, whining and sniffing all the while, as if wanting her to wake up again. But all the three could do is watch, as May's body slumped.
"You're here," Taha Aki's voice woke her spirit right up, causing her to sit up abruptly, eyes frantically looking around, spotting Sam and Jared watching over her physical body, along with the puppy who seemed concerned.
She sighed, glaring up at her ancestor all while taking his outstretched hand to push herself up. "You've gotta stop doing that."
"You'll learn to control it," he said. "You've made it here, then. You saw your baskets?"
"Yeah."
"You used to play here as a child," he told her. "This spot," he looked around, "this was where my physical body met its end. I...I decided to stay in the spirit world after what happened."
"So that's why," she realized. "You disappeared."
"I couldn't stay any longer," he admitted, sighing as he frowned, turning to face her physical body. "You will have to learn how to manage your travels. Going into the spirit world might be an easy thing for you to learn, but getting out will be difficult. Especially since you have many spirits you might encounter. Mostly just the animals, but there could be dangerous adversaries."
"Like Utlapa?"
"Like Utlapa," he nodded gravely. "But, know that I will always be here to guide you. However, you should never be dependent on me."
"Noted," she sighed. "What now?"
He looked around and gestured at their surroundings. "This place has been untouched for generations, a place where creatures tend to avoid without realizing. It's a place of powerful magic that began when I took my final physical breath. But you came along, and reawakened my spirit," he explained with a heavy voice. "You are destined for greatness, dear Accalia. Not only are you the White Wolf, but you are the only one who has ever been able to travel into the spirit world in centuries.
"You may think this will hinder you from success in the natural world, but you must understand that this is an advantage. You are powerful, because not only did the Great Wolf choose you, but Mother Nature herself did too. You quite literally have the planet in the palm of your hands."
She frowned. "Please don't tell me I'm Layla from Sky High."
He mirrored her expression. "I do not know what that means."
"I mean," she sighed, "do I, like, manipulate plants or something?"
"Oh," he chuckled. "No, you do not. But they do react to you, though. Look at how the grass touches your physical body," he pointed, "it's hugging you, giving you comfort." Then he turned to her again. "You are one with nature."
"And the wolf?" She asked.
"Yours," the man shrugged, a twinkle in his eye as he regarded her. "If you think I had anything to do with it, just know that I didn't. The poor pup's mother became a Cold One's meal and he's been traveling by himself. He, for some reason, arrived here, and has been living in your baskets." He grinned. "He seems to like you."
She made a face. "I can't have pets."
"A wolf is not a pet, it's a wild animal," he lightly scolded. "It will always be a wild animal. But it seems to respect you. Do the same, and you'll have a companion. But for now, I want you to train yourself as a shifter, and as a traveler. Samuel Uley and Jared Cameron both already have experience, so they'll be able to teach you how to shift back and forth. As for the traveler part, well...you only have to relearn it, dear child."
"You're extending your stay?" May could hear Spencer's pout even through the phone call, and she couldn't stop herself from pouting back. "You never use up your vacation days!"
"I know," she sighed. Though she was, in a way, glad to take a break from dead bodies and psychopaths, she was still not too thrilled to be part of a pack, nor to be their fated alpha. "I'm fine now though, my condition's getting better. But since it's nearly Christmas and, you know, I'm back home for the first time in a long time..." She trailed off.
"Right," Spencer huffed.
"You could come here, you know. You've been forever invited by dad when he found out we were completely platonic. Compared us to Shaggy and Scooby the last time you visited."
"Yeah, and he called you Scooby."
"I'm still bitter about that," she rolled her eyes. "But anyway, you want to?"
Spencer hummed, most likely figuring out his schedule in his head. "I don't think I can go in such short notice. You know I like planning ahead."
"But Spence!"
"I'll think about it!" He laughed, knowing that she was close to whining. "But no promises."
"That's fine enough for me! I'll just--"
"Hey, May! Cult leader wants you," Jared stated as he burst into her room, a shit-eating grin on his face. It was, after all, just hours after the whole fainting-thing. Both he and Sam were worried sick, but after a quick explanation, they were placated. They were still a little wary of the wolf pup, however, who followed them home.
"Cult leader?!" Spencer asked loudly, his voice cracking a little in shock after hearing those words through the phone. "Did that random guy just say cult leader?"
"Inside joke," she sighed, glaring at Jared. "He was referring to dad. But, I gotta go. Talk to you later?"
"Sure. Love you."
"Love you."
After ending the call, May was met with the accusing expression of one Jared Cameron, who had crossed his arms as he frowned at her. "Was that your boyfriend?"
"Ew, fuck off."

OH YEAH, and just to like possibly remove some confusion: may is connected to nature spiritually, hence why it reacts to her so much. animals like her, all that stuff. but she doesn't communicate or manipulate or anything. they just like her because of her spirit, and the fact that she's a traveler. her supernatural qualities extend to the natural world, so like, yeah.
