¯\_(° ͜ʖ °)_/¯ — chapter twenty three
"movie night"
"AND THAT'S JUST ABOUT IT."
Nobara had just finished her somehow very thorough yet short explanation of the two young jujutsu sorcerers interaction with the supposed fortune teller. Gojo seemed to have his ears tuned in to the conversation for the most part — only getting distracted momentarily by Hiyori's smile once and then a second time when her laughter rung throughout the air.
The three had been at a revolving sushi bar restaurant for the past half hour, with Nobara and Hiyori seated on one side of the booth and Gojo had sprawled his long body out on the opposite side. His long legs overextended, like the regular-sized table was not the right size for him. Whenever he occasionally brushed one of Hiyori's legs, she would flash a deadly glare — and he would smirk. They kept repeating the same reaction, mostly because Gojo was so obsessed with getting on her absolute worst nerves.
"Sounds like you guys met a clairvoyant," Gojo absentmindedly stated while he shoved the last tuna sushi roll into his mouth by chopsticks. His eyes hidden beneath the blindfold already began tracing the revolving belt to the right of him and left of Hiyori. Lucky for the redhead — the conveyor belt was moving in her direction so she would have first choice before Gojo. "It's not impossible."
"It wasn't real, don't worry," Hiyori chuckled while wrapping her fingertips around a small plate containing three wide spicy shrimp rolls. A little victorious smirk traced her lips as she realized Gojo had been aimed directly at that specific plate — so she flashed him a wide smile. "Thanks for lunch, too."
"Mmm," Gojo hummed along — he was clearly trying to cover up the fact she stole the roll he wanted. "How are you so sure none of it was real?"
"Because some of the stuff she said was absolutely not going to be true," Hiyori responded back, she then make a little squeak of excitement as she remembered something. "Nobara! What did your fortune cookie say?"
"Oh, right!" The brunette had been so distracted by the free sushi that the fortune cookie resting in her jacket pocket had been long forgotten.
The girl then fetched it out, cracked it wide open, and threw the cookie off to the side as she peeled out the fortune. Her eyebrows narrowed as her eyes exchanged between the paper fortune and her single plates of three different sushi combinations in front of her — she had barely eaten compared to the ravenous Gojo and Hiyori.
"What's that face for?" Hiyori questioned, arching a single suspicious brow in her female best friend's direction. She then dipped one of the shrimp sushi rolls into her bowl of soy sauce, popping it in her mouth swiftly.
Nobara read directly from the paper in her fingertips, "Stop eating now. Food poisoning is no fun."
All three of the jujutsu sorcerers froze in their movements — both Gojo and Hiyori had mouths full of the sushi and were unable to speak anything.
Gojo was able to chew his quicker than Hiyori, however, so he was the first to be able to respond with, "That's what that stupid fortune cookie says?"
"What are the odds. . ." Hiyori mumbled to herself.
It was a bit strange and frightening when Gojo just suddenly appeared behind her five seconds after she read her own fortune. And it just so happened that Nobara's own fortune related to this very specific moment. It gave Hiyori slight chills, to be frank.
"Might just be me, but I am not trusting this place anymore," Nobara stated in a slight disgust, pushing the plate still containing a few leftover rolls of sushi. "What did yours end up saying anyway?"
Hiyori's face straightened out as her posture shot up in an instant — she hadn't even thought of what to say when Nobara would enviably ask that. The fortune was hidden away in her pockets from earlier, but she still dug both hands in to present like she was genuinely looking for it. When she didn't pull out the paper, she left out a breathless laugh.
"I must've lost mine," Hiyori shrugged her shoulders nonchalantly, trying her absolute best to not appear so suspicious. "It just said something about being my lucky day soon."
"Well, at least if you get food poisoning we'll know that yours will come true too."
(' π')
"Why did you have to speak it into existence?"
Hiyori grumbled as she dipped her own head towards the sink facet below her, flushing some of the tap water through her mouth. The attempt to cover the repulsive and stomach-churning taste that lingered in her mouth.
And what taste was that?
It was now the third time Hiyori had thrown up her previously delicious sushi into the hotel toilet. Nobara had clung close for the most part, refilling her cup of water and occasionally holding Hiyori's red locks of hair back from getting splattered with her throw up.
"Hey, I tried warning you," Nobara slightly teased, nudging her shoulder into Hiyori's — there was a bottle of pedialyte wrapped in her fingertips. "My fortune wasn't joking, apparently."
Hiyori exhaled as she grabbed the pedialyte bottle from her best friend, cracking open the top to swallow a few gulps of the liquid.
"But hey, at least that means your lucky day is coming soon, right?" Nobara badgered on, resting her back against the doorframe.
Hiyori purposely avoided Nobara's eyes as her own trailed to the ground. She had almost forgotten she originally lied to the brunette about what her 'fortune' really contained. After actually getting food poisoning from that sushi place right after Nobara opened up her fortune scared her practically to death. Because if that had come true, could that mean her own fortune held some kind of truth?
No effing way.
"We can hope," Hiyori replied dryly, finally shifting past Nobara and into the hotel room they both shared.
However — it wasn't just the two girls residing in the hotel room currently. Both Yuji and Megumi were planted on the two beds. Yuji had his brown eyes trained on a movie playing on the tv, Megumi seemed to be paying attention but his eyes looked uninterested. But once they recognized Hiyori practically crawling from the bathroom, their attention transferred to the redhead.
"How you feelin', Yori?" Yuji tilted his head off to the side a bit with a sympathetic expression crossing his face. He always hated watching Hiyori sick, especially throughout their childhood.
"Stupid sushi," Hiyori groaned as she collapsed on her own bed. She was right beside Yuji, where she placed the back of her head onto his lap. As children, Hiyori used to love just laying on Yuji's lap while he occasionally played with some strands of her hair. Yuji instinctively stroked his index and middle fingers through her gentle curls. "I'm sorry — I know you guys wanted to go out again tonight. You can still go without me if you want."
"No way, silly," Yuji laughed, giving Hiyori a little head scratch that made a warm smile cross her face. "I'm sticking right by your side."
Megumi spoke up, "You know you would hear no complaints from me about staying in."
"Yeah, even though I wanted to kiss a hot guy tonight—I, of course, would rather help my sick best friend," Nobara began, but with both Yuji and Megumi flashed her daring glares she switched up her sentence. The next words were mumbled silently, "I guess."
"Oh, so very kind of you," Hiyori fake smiled in her brunette best friend's direction — which she copied. "Has anyone checked in on Gojo? I know he had almost twice as much sushi as I did."
"He's still locked in his own bathroom," Megumi explained, and Nobara let out a little amused chuckle that gained the rest of the jujutsu sorcerers attention.
Hiyori perked a single eyebrow in the brunette's direction, "What're you giggling about?"
"Oh, nothing," Nobara waved off, but there was still a little bit of amusement written on her expression. "You guys just didn't wanna listen to me, huh?"
"It was a stupid fortune cookie, how were we supposed to tell it was gonna actually come true?" Hiyori whined, where the girl's stomach seemed to groan alongside her. It felt almost as if an animal was trying to claw its way out of her intestines.
"Do we wanna do a movie night, then?" The pink-haired boy suggested, and the rest of the young adults in the room perked up some interested eyebrows. "That way you can just relax and feel better, and if you need to run to the bathroom — we can pause it."
Hiyori shifted her head so was leaning back some, just enough to be able to make eye contact with Yuji's brown eyes despite laying on his lap currently. Emotion swelled in her pupil's as she stared at her best friend, currently fighting the urge to let a few sensitive tears slip.
"I think that's an amazing idea," Hiyori grinned brightly — the kind of smile you had to close your eyes to fully express your happiness. "You're the best, Yuji."
It had been a long time since Yuji Itadori had seen that radiant and glowing smile.
"Well, can we entrust you to find a suitable movie, Itadori?" Nobara rose a dry eyebrow with a deadpan expression. From the looks of it — she clearly didn't entrust him to find a suitable movie. "What else do we need?"
The group rang out with silence for a brief second while they all thought out answers to Nobara's question — however, as soon as Yuji seemed to figure it out he decided to blurt it out instead.
"Snacks! We have to pick up snacks," Yuji practically shouted as the thought came to his head.
He, very gently and carefully, lifted Hiyori's head from his lap and quickly replaced it with a pillow. Although both felt similar on the back of her head, she almost immediately missed his warmth and touch.
"Are skittles still your favorite?" Yuji beamed towards the redhead, when an equally as excited smile crossed her face. Hiyori didn't even reply, only with a simple head bob. "Oh, shit, I almost forgot the drinks. We can't forget the drinks."
And in what seemed like just an instant, Yuji had swiftly snagged his shoes back onto his feet and took off in a mad dash towards the hotel door. Then, the second the door closed back shut — the lock automatized on. It was silent, just for a moment.
"Was he dropped on his head as baby? Don't lie to me — give it to me straight."
