CHAPTER SIX—
you just hurt that boys feelings.

"You can take the mask off, Bianca." Wednesday caught on to the groups , making everyone remove their hoods. Lasy gave her an awkward smile and faint wave.

"Wait, I preferred you with it on." Wednesday stared at Bianca.

"How did you get down here?" Xavier questioned her.

"Rowan showed me." she glanced down at her hoodie. "Left pocket."

Lasy watched Xavier go over and pull the painting from her pocket, holding it up. "I tracked the watermark to the Poe statue. Then I solved the riddle."

"Wait, there's a riddle?" Kent looked around. "I thought we just snapped twice."

"Well, aren't you the brightest of the bunch." Wednesday said in emotionless sarcasm.

"The Nightshades are an elite social club." Bianca informed her. "Emphasis on elite. Lasys great great great great great great great grandparents formed it decades ago."

"What a legacy." Wednesday rose an eyebrow at her as Lasy gave her a tight lipped smile.

"We have roof parties, campsite, the occasional midnight skinny-dip." Yoko listed on, smiling at the memories.

Lasy caught Wednesday's eye as she pointed to herself and shook her head, indicating that is not what she did.

"And Yoko's an amateur mixologist." Davina gushed on, now a lot better after a day in the intermarry.

"She makes a killer virgin mojito. It can get pretty wild." Ajax smiled as he continued to nod his head.

"Wow. Do you guys even have a bedtime?" Wednesday faked a gasp. "Last I heard, the Nightshades had been disbanded after Carmichael and Welamina La did a blood sacrifice. It's one of my favorite bed time stories."

"The normie boy." Lasy nodded her head. "Thirty years ago."

"The group kind of lost its charter." Xavier further explained for her. "But, because it was Lacy's grandparents that did it, she was the only one that was able to bring it back fairly. A few months ago, she finally caved to Bianca's begs."

"That was your grandparents?" Wednesday stared at Lasy, the grand daughter of her biggest inspirations. "They were vampires. The blood."

"Feeding season." Lasy inhaled. "On my Moms side of the family."

"Woah." Wednesday stared at her. "It wasn't a sacrifice? It was just to feed?"

"It was both." Bianca answered for her. "They were attempting to change the normie."

"Change him into a vampire?" Wednesday stared at Lasy.

"Y-" Bianca began.

"I'm talking to her." Wednesday never broke eye contact with Lasy, staring at her. "Go on."

Lasy hesitated as she inhaled. "Not all vampires are able to turn others. It's a myth, theres only one every eighty-three years that is gifted the ability on their seventeenth birthday."

"It was your grandfathers seventeenth birthday, he wanted to see if it was him." Wednesday confirmed with a nod of her head, Lasy nodded back. "It didn't work."

She shook her head in return.

"But, it was eighty-three years?" she asked, Lasy shook her head. "No?"

"It was fifty-three." she shrugged her shoulders and chewed the inside of her mouth. "But, he had hope."

"He was an idiot." Wednesday stated at her. "You've ruined my favorite tale."

"Sorry." Lasy shrugged.

"Don't be." Wednesday held her head up more. "Perhaps I like it more now."

"We have a lot of wealthy alumni, so Weems looks the other way as long as nobody makes any waves." Yoko went on in further explaining of the Nightshades. "Plus, Lasy is her favorite student. She gets away with plenty more where that came from."

Lasy gave her a look.

"Someone like Rowan?" Wednesday raised a brow.

"We booted that loser last semester." Bianca laughed in disbelief. "Couldn't get past the bite."

"The bite." Wednesday narrowed her eyes.

"Lasy bites each of us to mark us as an official Nightshade." Davina went on, Wednesday looked at Lasy again.

"It's a symbol." she shrugged her shoulders. "Representing loyalty and secrecy, bounding you to the Nightshades forevermore."

I'm starting to rather enjoy this girl.

"Question is, what are we gonna do with her? Only members are allowed in this library." Bianca stared at Wednesday, eyeing her as her faint smile fell now that Lasy was not revealing her internalized creepiness.

"I say we invite her to pledge." Xavier spoke up when everyone fell questionably silent. "She is a legacy."

They looked to the photo of her parents on the wall, with Lasys mother.

"After the crap she pulled in the Poe Cup, there's no way in hell." Bianca immediately jumped in. "We talk about not making waves? She's a tsunami."

"I think it's up to Lasy." Xavier smirked at her. "Las? What do you say, captain?

"Just because I beat you at your own game? Let me save you the trouble." Wednesday stared at her, ignoring Xavier. "I'm not interested in joining."

"You're seriously turning us down?" Yoko asked her in disbelief.

"Can you believe it?" Wednesday gasped slightly before looking to Lasy. "Though, I am a fan of your symbolizing. Too bad it comes with such a burden."

"Untie her." Bianca demanded.

"I freed myself five minutes ago." she  dropped the rope that had been on her wrist. She went to leave as Kent blocked her. "Do you want a matching black eye?"

She shoved the rope to his chest as he moved, Xavier scoffed as they all watched her walk up the stairs. Wednesday stopped to look out at each of them, over looking all their faces. "It's amateurs like you who give kidnapping a bad name."

Lasy tried not to smile as she headed over to pick up the chair to move it from her grandparents favorite spot.

"Las?" Xavier caught Lasys arm when they left the town square of Jericho, preparing for outreach day. "Why are you in such a hurry?"

She shrugged her shoulders, glancing around wearily.

"I just wanted to say i'm sorry." he awkwardly shifted, apologizing not really his style. "About the Poe Cup. I shouldn't have asked you to do what you did, I just got competitive and I knew someone would pull you away."

Lasy shrugged as he shook his head. "No, it's not just a shrug. I was a bad friend, and i'm sorry."

Lasy cracked a smile. "Papercut later as payback?"

"You bet." he nodded with a half smile. "Where are you going, anyways?"

Lasy rose her eyebrows as he shrugged. "You clearly have a change of clothes in your bag and Ajax told me you asked him to cover your assignment since you're on the same one."

Lasys face fell. "Visit my mothers grave."

"Oh." he frowned. "Sorry, Las. She was a great lady."

"You didn't know her." Lasy laughed and pointed at his face. "You cheese."

"It's just what we say to be nice." he shoved her hand away. "Doesn't make me cheesy."

She shrugged her shoulders and pointed to his paper. "Oh, i'm on the shift at Weathervane. Serving coffee, or whatever."

She hesitated. "Tyler."

"Yeah, I know." he rolled his eyes. "Dreading that one."

Lasy shrugged slightly. "Maybe his therapist made him better."

"How do you know he's in therapy?" Xavier's question made her eyes widened slightly, swallowing hard. She pointed to her eyes. "Oh, you saw?"

She nodded her head as he did too. "Okay, just make sure you're back in time to meet up here or Principal Weems will starve you."

She gave him a small smile and nodded, clutching her backpack and walking down the road. She pushed the doors of the therapy office open, smiling at the woman as she pointed at her bathroom. The woman nodded and motioned for her to go ahead. Lasy pushed the door open and shut it behind her, shedding her Nevermore uniform and stuffing it into her bag before changing into the jeans and navy sweater she'd packed, fixing the white collar around her neck that went with her white shoes. She tossed the backpack back on, holding it close as she pulled the door open.

Tyler stopped walking as he stood right there. "Oh, hey."

Her eyes widened, walking back into the bathroom and shutting the door. She stayed there a second, breathing heavy and shaking her head to try and calm down before opening the door again, giving him a tight lipped smile as he dropped his awkward wave. "Do you go here?"

Lasy shook her head with frowned eyebrows. He glanced at the sign on the door. "Just making a pit stop?"

Lasy nodded with a shy smile, Tyler gave an awkward chuckle. "I've actually been meaning to talk to you."

Lasu shook her head quickly to try and shut him up, scared of what he might say. "No, i'm serious. Thank you for that huge tip you left me the other day. You didn't have to do that, though. I wanted to give you most of it back."

Lasy shook her head again as he dug into his wallet. "I feel bad, like you felt sorry for me after I dumped all that stuff about my Dad onto you the other-"

Lasy put her hand out to stop him from passing her the money, her palm laid against his fingers. She inhaled deeply and preyed she wouldn't throw up when she opened her mouth. "You're just a really good barista."

Tyler's lip started to form into a smile. "Two hundred dollars worth? I mean, I barley make that in a week."

Lasy shrugged and gave him a shy smile, rocking on her heels slightly as he smiled back as her, shaking his head. "At least let me repay you by paying for your gas money, maybe? You look like you're on a mission."

"A mission?" Lasy couldn't help it, she laughed as it echoed in the office.

"That's just what it seems like." he motioned to herself. "So, how much? Take a hundred, gas prices are getting high."

"I don't..." Lasy trialed off with a deep breath. "I didn't bring my car."

"Oh." he blinked. "You're just going into town?"

She hesitated and shook her head. Tyler nodded slowly, letting it sink in. He wondered how he got involved with so many odd girls recently. "Well....I have my Dads car. Could I give you a ride?"

If he knew about her Mom, it could be a step closer to giving it away.

"Oh, no." Lasy shook her head. "No!No, no, No. No, no. No."

"Okay." his face fell some, Lasy realizing how she said it made it seem like she really didn't want anything to do with him. "Well, coffee on the house for...a while."

He turned and walked out, red in the face from embarrassment. Lasy frowned, the woman behind the counter stared. "You hurt that boys feelings."

"Didn't mean to." Lasys eyebrows came together sadly, she really did not want to hurt Tyler Galpin feelings ever. "I got...shy."

"I saw that." she confirmed. "Let the boy drive you where you need to go."

"He can't know though." she chewed on the inside of her mouth.

"Do you wanna hang out with him or not?" she rolled her eyes as Lasy nodded. "Then make something up."

Lasy took off out of the office quickly, running after Tyler as she finally caught up with him and tapped him on his shoulder. He spun around and rose his eyebrows. "I'm-"

"I do need a ride." her eyes stared up at him. "You owe me one."

Tyler smiled as he nodded. "I'm on a thirty. I just need to get a change of clothes at my house."

"Make it forty-five." she rose her head slightly.

"Deal." Tyler smiled, fishing the keys from inside of his pocket.
