CHAPTER FIVE—
the silent, rich customer.

"Finally." Xavier huffed as Lasy finally showed up to the race. "Not like you're fifteen minutes late."

"Sorry." she grasped Ajax's hand as he helped her into the canoe. "Busy."

"Oh, you were busy? Doing what?" he passed her a row as she ignored him. "I am waiting."

Lasy just shrugged her shoulders, rubbing her lipstick so it would smear a little more with the joker makeup they all had. Xavier rose his eyebrows. "A shrug? That's all I get?"

She shrugged again as he sighed. "Fine, don't tell me."

Lasy was glad he let it go as he turned around again, her eyes looked over toward the Black Cats next to them. Enid smiled at Ajax, who looked away and avoided her gaze. Wednesday looked over too as Lasy gave her a hesitant wave, getting a questionable look in return but nodding her head as a hello.

"I want to welcome you all to the Edgar Allan Poe Cup." Principal Weems got over the mic to welcome each team and all the respectable watchers. "This is one of Nevermore's proudest annual traditions, dating back 125 years. Each team must row across to Raven Island, pull a flag from Crackstone's Crypt, and hustle back without sinking or being sunk. First team to cross the finish line with their flag wins the cup and bragging rights for a year, as well as some special privileges."

"No pressure or anything, Las. But, you know your ancestors have won every year dating back to the very first race." Ajax leaned forward to tell her. Lasy looked back with a scared look as his eyebrows shot up. "I said no pressure."

"Not helping." she shook her head in fear, clutching her row.

"It'll be okay. Just stick to our plan." Xavier spoke over his shoulder when he overheard the two.

"Let the Poe Cup begin!" Principal Weems announced, firing her gun high in the air. They all took off, rowing quickly and as much on sync as they could.

"Oh, excuse us." Xavier mocked the black cats as they passed them. "Lasy!"

"Yeah?" she called.

"You skipped your breakfast because Principle Weems wasn't in her office, right?" he yelled at her over his shoulder as they neared the banks.

"Yeah!" she yelled back.

They hit the shore as he stood up and pulled her and Ajax to her feet. "Good, go take out someone for me while we go the flag."

"You want me to eat someone?" she yelled at him.

"Just enough to get us in the lead!" he yelled back. Lasy hesitated but ran into the woods to follow the foot steps, having a strong enough smell on someone's blood to track them down.

She could tell by the uniform it had been a siren that was running through the woods, Bianca close beside her as they neared where the flags were. Lasy hid behind a tree and threw a pebble, having it hit Bianca in the arm as she paused. "Girls, wait."

They all did, paused in the woods as they scanned the empty opening. Her eyes looked to her right. "Davina, make sure no one is following us. We'll get the flag."

She nodded, Lasy watched as Bianca and the remaining of her team took off while Davina headed back through the woods in search of something. Lasys arms reached out as soon as she passed the tree she'd been hidden behind, yanking the girl around as she clasped her hand over her mouth and sunk her fangs into her neck. Davina made a pained noises from behind Lasys hand, which should have been enough to let her go but due to Xavier's plan, she'd missed dinner and breakfast.

Davina dropped to the ground when Lasy drained her too much to stay awake, the only reason Lasy took her fangs away as she gasped for a breath and rubbed her bloody mouth. She kneeled down to try and take more but a hand grabbed her.

"Lasy." it was Bianca, yanking her away. "What the hell are you doing?"

"I-" she started.

"Davina." the other siren fell next to her friend. "She's still breathing."

"I only took a little blood from her." Lasy promised. "It's common to loose consciousness."

"Yeah, and it looked like you were going back for more!" she yelled at her from the ground.

"Did Xavier put you up to this?" Bianca got Lasys attention again as she nodded. "That asshole. He knows you can't control yourself, let's go."

"Different teams." Lasy ran with her.

"I'm calling a time out!" Bianca yelled as the girls made it back to the boats were the Jokers were climbing in. "What's the matter with you?"

"Lasy." Xavier gaped. "She's not on our team!"

"You sent her to bite someone? She almost killed Davian, you know she can't stop!" Bianca yelled at him as Ajax helped Lasy back in the boat when he saw her guilty look. "And you say i'm the one who likes to win?"

"She didn't though, did she?" Xavier began to row away. "Nice going, Las."

She rolled her eyes now that it was setting in and she wasn't chasing the high of human blood, realizing what he'd asked her to do was unfair on so many parts. They continued to row until water started to fill up the bottom, making Xavier yelp. "Hey, what's going on?"

The Black Cats laughed as they passed, revealing the claw marks at the bottom of their boat were from Enid. Xavier collapsed back on the boat, Lasy looked back at him as she sighed and wipped her mouth.

Lasy headed straight to Weathervane after she took a shower, looking rather gloomy in the booth farthest to the back. Her attention was caught when a coffee was slid across the table and infront of her, a pretty design on the top. Her gaze shifted up as a weight was taken from her chest at the sight of Tyler. He rose his eyebrows. "You look like you could use a pick me up."

Lasy gave him a small smile as she warmed her hands up on the mug. "Thank you."

"Everything okay?" Tyler asked with a curious look, Lasy stared at him. "You look a little...sad."

She nodded her head. Tyler realized she probably didn't want to talk about it as he nodded too. "You want anything else?"

She really did, but she didn't say it.

Lasy nodded. Tyler cracked her a small grin. "Okay...what is it?"

She inhaled and shook her head, shrugging her shoulders as he laughed slightly. "Just anything again?"

Lasy smiled and nodded her head as he got out of the booth. "Coming right up."

As he walked to the back, she pulled her phone out of her bag.

She shoved her phone under her leg and pretended to be looking at the menu to avoid any posisbly connection. Tyler paused as he looked down at his phone, a smile forming on his face as the top of his ears reddened. Lasy smiled at the sight, swearing she could watch the affect she had on him forever if it was allowed. She dropped her gaze back to the menu as he came back over. "A to go white chocolate mocha."

She wouldn't drink it, but it sounded nice as Lasy smiled and took it from his hands. Their fingers brushed slightly as she stood up so they were right infront of each other. He was a few inches taller then her, maybe five or six but not in a way that made either of them strain their necks to look at each other. Lasy kinda just stared at him as a questionable look went across Tyler's face, thinking it had been something to do with the coffee.

Then, a small smile started to form on her face. Such an odd interaction, to stare for ten seconds before smiling with zero words spoken. He wasn't sure if he was creeped out or flattered, but he started to smile back. Lasy turned on her heels and walked away quickly, clutching the coffee in her hand as she hurried out to her car. Tyler watched her go through the window, looking down at the ten she left for the two drinks, though that was more then what it was.

His eyebrows frowned together as he lifted the tab some when he saw the money sticking out in the tip section. He pulled it free and stared at two hundred dollar bills left for him. His jaw fell slightly, hurrying to look out the window again, but her car was already heading down the road quicker then the speed limit allowed her to.

Lasy screamed at the top of her lungs as she drove down the street, stopping as soon as she hit the stop sign and stayed silent the remaining of the ride.
