CHAPTER TWO—
how to make a vampire happy 101

Lasy locked her door as five crept around, clearing her throat and making sure it was still gone. She paced, fearing she'd scare him away or scare herself into hanging up. She tried to tell herself that if she panicked too bad, all she had to do is hit the end call and blame it on bad service. It helped, but it didn't heal her entirely. But, her grades were literally terrible and her grandparents only ever sent her money if she was passing. And she loved to spend money.

"Breath, you moron." Lasy shook her head as she looked in the mirror, watching her fangs start to pop out. "Nope! Nope! Go back, go back in!"

She shoved at her teeth as her phone started to ring, screaming as she stared at it. She turned back to the mirror as she huffed. "Go back in!"

There'd only been two things that made Lasys teeth pop out uncontrollably. One, when she was hungry. And two, who she was painfully happy. For someone who felt like she was about to puke, she was happy to talk. "Chill out, you psycho."

Lasy laid on her bed with a breath, answering her phone. "Hello?

"Hey, Lasy." she could hear Tyler's smile. "Are you sick? You sound like you have a cold?"

"Just a little." she lied with a cough. "It's nice to hear your voice for the first time."

"Everything you expected?" he joked, putting her on speaker as he cracked the textbook open.

"Oh, you have no idea." Lasy hummed, clearing her throat slightly but remembering she was trying to sound different. "What are you doing?"

"What am I doing?" he laughed at her question as she hummed. "I'm just sitting at my desk. What are you doing?"

"I'm just sitting in my bed." she told him in response. "What are you wearing?"

"Wow!" Tyler laughed. "Straight to the point?"

Lasy smiled as she chuckled. "Sorry."

Shockingly, talking over the phone was the easiest thing. She thought it would be bad, like she'd panic and hang up after two sentences. But, she didn't feel so sick and on fire like she usually did. She felt okay, she felt natural. It just felt like any other text message they'd had over the past year and a half, just through voice messages instead. She was okay.

"I'm wearing jeans, and a flannel." he told her in response, she could imagine he'd put it on over the Weathervane tee when he left the coffee shop. "What are you wearing?"

Lasy gasped. "Take me to dinner first."

"So, only you can ask?" Tyler forgot all about science, standing up to lay on his bed. "My bad, I didn't know."

Lasy smiled, not being able to help but kick her legs a little as she rolled onto her stomach. "I'm wearing two different socks, some black shorts, and one of my Dads old school tee shirts."

"Are you home?" he asked curiously. "Your Dads not gonna get mad at you for talking, right?"

"No, he can't hear me." she lied to him. "What about your Dad?"

"I doubt it." Tyler shook his head even though he couldn't see her. "He's probably glad I made more friends. I haven't talk to many people after those other guys."

"Ah, yeah. Your mean phase." Lasy inhaled. She knew it all, Tyler told her so much. "They're missing out. You're the only person I really talk to too."

He really was. She had her friends, like Bianca, Enid, Xavier. And while she made light conversations, Tyler was really the only one she genuinely spoke to. Or, text. But, same difference. No one else knew her the way he did. "I mean, there's so much that goes on in my head that only you know."

"I know what you mean." he agreed with her. "I feel like you knew me better in the first week we started talking then people that have known me my entire life do."

"I guess it's easy to type it out." Lasy explained, chewing on the inside of her mouth some. "I think that's why so many people put their personal business all over social media. It's easier to do then say it out loud, but it still feels like you're getting it off your chest."

"No, I think it's just because you understand." Tyler shook his head, telling his side of things as Lasy listened. He sounded slightly different over the phone, she wondered if her regular voice did the same so she'd be able to get away with talking to him again without having to destroy her vocal cords. "I'm glad we decided to finally talk."

"Me too." Lasy smiled. Getting a coffee order was one thing, being able to hear him say the thing he said over text was a completely different thing.

"Still wish you'd at least show me what you look like so I can stop picturing you as just a star constellation like your profile pic." Lasys heart dropped as he laughed. "I bet you're pretty."

Lasy smiled as she pulled her knees up to her chest, leaning against them. "Maybe another time."

Tyler frowned. "At least tell me what color your eyes are."

"Brown. Really dark brown." she rubbed her hands against her legs as she hugged her knees harder, almost letting herself think it had been him.

"Okay." Tyler said back, she could still hear the smile. "I like brown eyes."

"I like blue eyes." she said back.

"How'd you know I have blue eyes?" her heart fell again, her eyes widening as panic set in.

"I don't." she quickly saved herself. "I'm just saying, I like them."

"Well, mine are." he feed into her lie, believing it.

"Okay." she quoted him. "I like blue eyes."

"I really wanna see you, Lasy." there was desperation in his tone, words he didn't think to say but simply couldn't help it. "You're like the only person I actually feel close to anymore, and you know me. Do you think i'd ju-"

She hung up. Tyler blinked. "Hello?"

He looked at his screen, finding it blank. The call had ended from her end.

"What's going on with you today?" Xavier asked Lacy as he stabbed her yet again during fencing. "That's the third time i've gotten you."

She shrugged her shoulders. Xavier rolled his eyes. "You're not gonna tell me?"

She rolled her eyes in response, kicking his legs out from under him and putting the sword to his chest. "I win."

A dark shade in a room fully or kids wearing white made her look up, seeing Wednesday walk in as her eyes stared around at everyone. Lasy gave Xavier a weird look as he stood up and held his mask under his arm.

Rowan hit the ground hard after his match with Bianca. "Coach, Coach, she tripped me."

"It was a clean strike, Rowan." Coach shook his head with a deep exhale. Lasy tilted her head to watch how it would play out.

"Maybe if you whined less and practiced more, you wouldn't suck." Bianca rolled her eyes with a shrug. Lasy pursed her lips and gave a single nod.

"How long do you think until Rowan starts crying?" Xavier gave Lasy a curious look.

She rose an eyebrow, holding up three fingers as he nodded his head to agree with her.

"Seriously, Coach, when am I gonna get real competition?" Bianca huffed with a shrug, had beaten everyone in this room. Including Lasy, even if she went easy on her because Bianca really did adore Lasy. Most of them did, it was hard not to when she seemed like nothing but a shy girl that needed someone to protect her. That wasn't the case, but she wouldn't speak up to tell them differently. "Anyone else wanna challenge me?"

"I do." Wednesday spoke from where she stood, watching. Lasys eyes widened slightly as she tilted her head more to watch.

"Oh, you must be the psychopath they let in." Bianca gave her a fake smile.

Lasy nudged Xavier with a questionable look. He nodded. "She apparently killed people at her old school."

Lasys eyes widened. "For real?"

"Apparently." he shrugged.

"And you must be the self-appointed Queen Bee." Wednesday stared straight at her. "Interesting thing about bees. Pull out their stingers, they drop dead."

"Rowan doesn't need you to come to his defense." Bianca quickly cut it when Wednesday's comment had taken her off guard. "He's not helpless, he's lazy."

"Are we doing this or not?" Wednesday stared up at her.

Bianca tiled her head in response as she took her spot on the other side of the mat, Wednesday the other. Coach inhaled. "On guard."

Bianca and Wednesday were both doing good, really good. Lasys head was snapping back and forth as she watch them. Wednesday dropped down on her heels and got Bianca right in the chest. "Point, Wednesday."

Lasy threw her hands up in shock, high above her head as Ajax smacked her hand in an high-five from behind her.

They stood and took their spots again, Wednesday got too confident with her move, Bianca caught it and stabbed her chest. "The score is even."

Lasy smiled with teeth, her thumbs going upwards.

Wednesday removed her mask as she stared at her, like she was plotting her murder. Lasy slowly lowered her thumbs .

"That first point was clearly beginner's luck." Bianca took off her mask next, a smile on her face. "Let's finish this."

"For the final point, I would like to invoke a military challenge." Wednesday looked to Coach, unbothered by Bianca's attempt at intimidating her. "No mask. No tips. Winner draws first blood?"

Lasy gasped loudly, putting a hand over her mouth as a few heads looked her way.

"It's your decision, Bianca."Coach rose his brows at her.

She tilted her head. "Let's see if you bleed in black and white."

Xavier and Lasy shared a look as she shrugged. He shook his head. "I don't know either."

Wednesday immediately swung at her as Bianca dodged it, hitting her sword with her own as both girls dodged it and backed away from each other. Wednesdays flew over her head as Bianca kicked hers down to the ground. Wednesday flipped over her body with ease, earning a few gasp. Bianca stood up quickly, slashing her sword as it cut Wednesday in the forehead.

"Your face finally got that splash of color it so desperately needed." Bianca mocked Wednesday as she lowered her sword.

Lasy smiled as she clapped her hands quickly, bouncing on her heels just slightly.

As class came to an end, Lasy was packing her things up as she grabbed her bag, seeing she had a few unread messages from Tyler. A little smile forms on her face as she sunk into the floor.

whostyler: i'm sorry about last night, lasy. i didn't mean to push or make you uncomfortable.

whostyler: i totally get it, it's your choice. i just don't want you to feel like i'd judge you. because i wouldn't. i really liked talked to you.

whostyler: you're my friend, probably my best friend. i don't want to ruin that by trying to push you.

eclipselasy: that's okay. i understand what you mean, i want to meet you one day too. just not now, it's hard to explain.

eclipselasy: you're my best friend too.

whostyler: i understand, i won't ask again:)

"Hey, Las?" Bianca nodded down to her, making her look up from how she was sad on the floor, one leg infront of her and the other tucked under the thigh. "You coming?"

Lacy frowned her eyebrows together.

"Davina is taking me to the carnival in town to celebrate the win, we wanted to see if you and Kent wanted to tag along?" she suggested. Lasy smiled, nodding her head as she stood up and pulling her bag with her.
