Living in the middle of nowhere on a farm, she had trouble finding a place where the ground was even enough to skate on. But there was one down the hill a few yards away from their house.
Her blood pumped with excitement as she rode down the hill. It was her eleventh birthday and she had gotten the skateboard from Jimmy and Beth, despite the heavy criticism and protests from her father. She was only allowed to use it if she had her helmet on and if she didn't go too fast. She was now speeding down the hill and the helmet she had thrown into one of the bushes a few yards away from their house.
For a split second, she closed her eyes, feeling a strong sense of relief and freedom. Breathing in she could smell the spring many sent. When she opened her eyes she realized she was going a bit too fast. Panic surged through her and her heart clenched with dread causing her to lean a little bit too far to the right. She let out a loud shriek.ย She lost all her balance and jolted forward, landing hard on the ground. She felt a strong pain in her left foot. A pain that radiated through her whole leg. She rolled down to the end of the street and stopped in front of a house. Her eyes prickled with tears. She tried to suppress her sobs but they forced their way up her throat. Her whole body ached with pain.
The front door opened and a man ran outside and kneeled next to the girl. She recognized the man immediately. His name was Otis. He used to help her father on the farm and Ellie's mother and his wife, Patricia, were friends.
Otis helped the girl to his car. She cried the whole way there. Once at the hospital, she found out that her left foot was broken. Her foot was casted with a bright blue cast. On the drive home from the hospital, she thanked Otis for what she had done.
"No worries," he smiled.
"Are you going to tell my dad?"
"Do you want me to tell your dad?" Otis asked.
Ellie looked at him. She knew how her father would react if he found out, so she shook her head.
"Okay then,"
"What are you gonna tell him?"
"I'll come up with something. You know, you should be really thankful that Patricia wasn't home because she wouldn't let you lie to him." Otis smiled.
That was before the world went to shit. Now Ellie stood in front of the many stones that formed a grave. She bent down and picked up a beautiful flower from the ground and placed it gently on the grave.
She wasn't sure what to say or do so she just stood there, with the memory of him helping her that day on the skateboard replaying in her head.

She told him about the time when they dressed up as their father for Halloween and when Carl crawled into their mother's closet and threw up on her wedding dress. She held his hand tightly as she spoke.
Her stomach growled, but she didn't want to leave him. She was never going to leave him again.

"Hi," Ellie whispered in a soft voice, trying not to scare the woman in the rocking chair.
"Hi," Carol wiped her tears from her face.
"Do you mind if I sit?" Ellie asked, nodding to the chair next to her. Carol shook her head. "What do you have there?" She asked, referring to the necklace in Carol's hands.
"Something my daughter gave me on Mother's Day last year." Carol's voice was thick with tears.
"May I?" Ellie asked reaching for the silver necklace. Carlo handed her it and Ellie observed it closely. On it hung a locket with a hinged door. Ellie opened it and revealed a small picture of a child. It was a young girl with blond hair, green eyes, and a bright smile.
"She's adorable."
Carol nodded as tears escaped her eyes. "It was her first day of school. She.. she was so excited and..." her voice broke and sobs flew past her lips.
Ellie placed a hand on her arm. "She looks like a tough girl. I know it. Daryl is out there right now looking for her. We will find her. I promise."
Ellie, along with some of the other members of the group were called over to one of the wells where Dale had found a walker. Ellie leaned over and peeked down into the well where she spotted the dead one. It was fat and grosser than a regular one. Its skin looked mushy and was hanging from his body.
"Looks like we've got a swimmer." The old man said.
"He kind of reminds me of my uncle." A brunette boy named Levi said making Ellie giggle.
"We can't leave it in there. God knows what it's doing to the water." Said Lori.
"We've got to get it out," Shane said.
"Easy. Put a bullet in its head." T-dog suggested.
"Alright," Shane said as he pulled out his gun from where it had been sitting in his holster.
"Woah, hold on." Ellie stopped him.
"Why not? It's a good plan."
"It's a stupid plan." A blond woman named Andrea said. "If that thing hasn't contaminated the water yet, blowing its brains out will finish the job."
"Exactly what I was gonna say." Ellie agreed. "We need to get it out alive."
"How do we do that?" Glenn asked.
They tried hoisting down a bait, but the walker didn't seem to care. They needed a new plan.
"We need live bait."
"I'll do it," Ellie spoke.
She had always been that stupid kid. Ever since she started school. She was always the one climbing the furthest up the tree, and usually the one who ended up falling. She was always the one jumping over the fence to the neighbor's house to get the ball they had kicked in on accident. And usually, the one who ended up running from the neighbor's big dog.
She was very unlike her father in that way. But after spending hours and days on that farm playing uno with her sisters one billion times, she was desperate for something exciting to happen.
"Nuh-uh, you're not going down there." Maggie shook her head.
"I'm the lightest and unless you want that sucker to ruin our water, I'm going." Ellie protested.
"Are you sure about this?" Glenn asked earning a nod from Ellie.
"No, you're not sending my sister down there! Oh my, you people are crazy."
The group tied a rope to Ellie. The rope was then placed around a hand water pump as the group held onto it.
"Okay, let's do this," Ellie said realizing what she had gotten herself into.
"Hey, we're gonna get you out of here in one piece," Levi said, noticing the hesitation from her.
"Living piece," Ellie corrected him. "The living part is very important." She grabbed her flashlight and glanced down at the walker, which reached its gill-covered arms to her.
Ellie slowly lowered her thin body into the well, praying that the rope would hold. A foul stench filled her nostrils making her stomach turn.
"I can't watch this," Maggie said, her voice filled with stress.
Ellie was slowly lowered into the well, closer and closer to the groans from the walker.
"Wow, you are one ugly sucker, aren't you?" Ellie said.
As she hung only a few feet away from the dead she heard a loud bang. Before she had time to react she was shoved closer to the walker. A loud scream escaped her mouth as she tried desperately to grab onto something. The walker grabbed onto her foot and she began screaming and kicking violently trying to get out of its grasp.
"Pull me up! Pull me up!" She shouted. "Get off me you piece of shit!"
"Hang on, Ellie!" Maggie shouted and Ellie felt herself getting pulled up.
Once she was finally up, she pulled herself out of the well and flew onto the ground.
"Ellie! Are you okay, you bit?!" Maggie asked as her hands searched her body for scratches or bites.
"Of course, I'm not okay! You guys almost killed me!"
Once she had caught her breath she handed Lori the rope, which she had tied around the walker's neck. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take a good long nap. And when I wake up, I'll be expecting some gourmet food, thank you."
As she walked away, Lori pulled the rope to find out it was connected with the dead.

She was woken up by a soft voice.
"Stella" Carl whispered.
The blonde girl opened her eyes and began blinking repeatedly to clear her vision.
"Hi there," she smiled, leaning forward in the chair. "How are you feeling?"
Carl looked down at the bandage that was covering his wound and scrunched his face. "It hurts, but not as much as it did before."
"That's good to hear." She smiled. "Hey, I got you this." She began fumbling around in her bag. "Here." She handed him the comic books that she had found earlier.
"Thank you, Stella." He smiled before his expression softened and his eyes looked at her with big sad eyes. "What dad said earlier, about Sophia.." he said, with resigned sadness in his eyes and his mouth formed a straight line. "He wasn't telling the truth, right?"
Stella stared at him, unsure what to say. She lowered her gaze to her hands in her lap as she spoke.
"No, he wasn't."
"Do you think she's de.."
"No." Stella cut him off. "She's not. We're going to find her and she'll be just fine. I promise."
"You can't promise something like that." Carl looked at her with his blue eyes.
Stella took a deep breath as she took his hand in hers. "I know." She said softly. "But I truly believe it."
Carl smiled gently. The door opened and their father walked inside. He had massive bags under his eyes and he looked very light-headed.
"Hey there, big guy."
"Hi, dad." Carl's whole face lit up. "You look tired."
"I am tired." Rick smiled, sitting down in the patterned chair next to Stella's.
"Hey, I'm like you now, Dad. We've both been shot." Carl said proudly. "Isn't that weird?"
A laugh escaped Stella's lips as she looked at the boy. The boy who wanted nothing more than to be like his father.
"I feel so left out." Stella joked.
"Yeah, I think you should stay that way." Said Carl.
"Yeah, well Carl, since you're in the club now, you get to wear the hat," Rick said in a serious tone, making the Grimes children laugh.
Rick gently placed his sheriff's hat on Carls's head making it look ten times smaller. The hat fell on his small head, covering his eyes.
"We'll, pad the rim tomorrow so it fits you." Rick laughed.
"Won't you miss it?" Carl asked.
Rick glanced at Stella quickly and they exchanged a smile before he spoke. "Maybe you'll let me borrow it from time to time."
"We can share it." Carl smiled. "You too, Stella."
"Thank you, baby. Sleep now." She pulled his bed cover over him and tucked him in. "I love you."
"I love you too."
