DENIS HAS A HALF SISTER, Daniela Russel. They shared the same father, but both had different mothers. When Denis's mother couldn't have children after her ovaries had been removed due to a complication, it was decided that an another woman would carry the baby, being a surrogate for the two.

Two and a half years later, after much attempts, two pregnancies failing, and then a successful nine months, came Daniela Russel.

It was quieter than anyone expected; Denis's father had expected hundreds of news reporters to show, Denis's mother expected her entire family to show after she told them she was having another baby, and Denis except just expected more.

But Daniela didn't cry, she just filled her lungs with her very first breath of air, and opened her eyes to view the world around her.

Denis and Daniela were two peas in a pod. Matching pyjamas, matching comforters, even matching binders for school ( which Daniela convinced Denny to have a bright pink one despite him being six years older and in high school. ) Denny was Daniela's idol, she looked up at him — literally — and she just wanted to be like him.

Then, Denny turned twenty one, and Daniela's fifteenth birthday rolled around and she got pregnant. Now, her entire family was so supportive and maybe that's what set her off — maybe it was like piles of money her father was throwing at her to either give up the baby or to use for the baby, whichever she chose in the end.

Daniela left, moving away and living with her mother's sister in Vancouver. She had her baby, a little boy named Jack.

Jack Russel, a fun kid. Denis would pop up more often, sending more messages and calling once a week. He's now six years old, and he knows his family, just not very well.

One thing the two shared ... was their love for Minecraft. Twenty seven year old Denny Russel loves Minecraft. It's like his whole secret personality that only exists for his family, not anyone else.

And the funny thing was, Tim Bradford also really liked Minecraft.

The even funnier thing, neither the training officer Tim Bradford and the new rookie Denis Russel would actually admit that they both had something in common.

So when their coworker, John Nolan's son was rushed into the hospital for a heart condition and complication, the two decided that making a gift basket was more important than actual police work... okay ... maybe Tim Bradford just wanted to show his coworker he cared all well using the new rookies money to gift them something.

Target had everything they could need. Between the actual baskets, the board games, the hoodies, the drinks and snacks — but Denny had his eye on one thing. The Nintendo Switch. Who wouldn't want one, and who wouldn't want Minecraft to go with it.

Denis Russel had money, he's worked a part time job which at some points was a full time job, and then when he entered into the academy he unfortunately had to part ways. He's saved up his own birthday money when he was young, and only ever spent little bits here and there.

And well, he had good ol' daddies money too.

"So." Tim Bradford starts, snapping Denny out of his wide eyed daydream. "Whatcha picking."

Denis points to the Nintendo Switch with a kid like smile. "I've always wanted one, and are super cool, so maybe he'd like one?" But he's kind of nervous, and it doesn't help that he's shopping for the son of the man he just slept with. Daddy cop, John Nolan.

Tim Bradford just shrugs, calls an attendant over to unlock the case, a pulls not one, not two, but three Nintendo switches from the case. He moves over to the games where he then continues the pluck three of every other game off the shelves.

He was racking up the bill before Denny could even do a mental calculation of what everything would cost.

The cart is full by the time they reach the check out, three of everything but baskets inside. Tim loads it all onto the belt where a kind older woman rings it through and bags it with a smile.

Denis just stands there awkwardly, fiddling with his wallet and pulling out his card to pay for the racked up bill. It's when he inserts his card he notices that everything's been separated, three piles and three different payments.

One on Denny's card — that's the switch that Tim Bradford heard he wanted and allows for Denny to accidentally buy. ( but don't worry, that just justified it for him! Denny wanted one, so so bad, and now he has one. )

One on Tim's card — a switch he wanted and knows he'd enjoy, but one he figured his nephews would enjoy much more than he would.

And one in cash, one that everyone had chipped in so they could buy something for John Nolan's kid in the hospital. Tim never meant for Denny to think that he was going to have to pay for everything, but when it did actually happen, he couldn't help but keep the game going.

DENNY RUSSEL stepped into the hospital room with a gift basket that he could barley carry by himself. Tim Bradford walked behind him awkwardly, arms out and ready to catch whatever could fall from the mans arms. He smiled awkwardly, eyes lighting up when he saw the look of excitement on Johns sons face. Even as an adult, he looked like a kid when he shuffled in his hospital bed.

"Henry, these are my coworkers, Tim and Denis." John spoke softly as he placed a hand on his sons shoulder, gently using his other hand to pint out who was who. "Tim and Denis, this is my son, Henry."

"Pleasure to meet you, kiddo." Denis smiled, anxiety washing away as he stepped closer into the room and placed the basket down on the small hospital dresser where Tim had quickly moved all the flowers to the side to fit everything. "Everyone that works with your dad chipped in, and we made you this gift basket."

Henry lit up as he leaned awkwardly to view the basket. "Wow. Thank you guys, that's so cool!"

John Nolan couldn't keep his eyes off Denis Russel.

And, Denis could feel John's stare like a spotlight on his back. He didn't know what was worse, the silence between them or the thousand things they weren't saying.

Henry allowed Tim to hand him the basket and he pulled out the Nintendo Switch with a gasp. "No way! And you got me Minecraft?!"

And just like that, Minecraft made its way into everyone's lives.
