Shrugging off their stupid heart talks & thoughts, they decided to just state it as a result of their 'hallucination, overthinking & watching too many B-wood movies'. Karan and Monami focused on capturing the beauty of nature through their eyes. Monami being disturbed by her thoughts, started walking ahead and Karan followed her assuming that she was leading him to somewhere sighting worthy.
After a walk of 10 minutes, Monami & Karan reached to a very holy and auspicious temple. Karan was amazed by the outer crafting and texture of the temple, while Monami smirked looking at his reaction.
Monami - Aapne kabhi mandir nahi dekhe?
Karan - Na..nahi, aisi baat nahi hai. Bus US ke temples mein vo India wali baat nahi aati.
Monami smiled and both of them entered the temple after removing their shoes and proceeded towards cleaning their hands and feet. Monami pushed the tubewell and washed her feet and no it was Karan's turn. He with great hardship, pushed the tubewell and was cleaning his feet and that's when Monami got a khurafati idea.
She took some water in her hand and sprinkled it on Karan's face. Karan got startled by the sudden cold sensation on his face. He felt offended and was about to sprinkle some water on Monami also, but he observed something that made him lost all his senses, Monami's laughter. Monami's loud laugh that broke out of her face when she saw Karan's wet face seemed soulful and like a melody to his ears. So, in order to not to tease her and not letting that laugh fade, he dropped the idea of making her taste her own medicine.
Karan (sarcastically) - Rani Sahiba, aapka hasna ho gaya ho to chal sakte hain mandir mein?
Monami controlled her laugh somehow and nodded. She went in and he followed her while still chuckling hard. Karan saw her and squinted her eyes being offended.
Karan - I'll surely take revenge of it!
Monami - Dekh lenge, dekh lenge!
Both Monami & Karan went in front of the deity and joined their hands along with bowing their heads in order to pray. For the wellbeing of their families and loved ones, betterment in health and success in their respective fields, both prayed for whatever they needed from the supreme almighty.
After praying and while descending the stairs of the temple, Monami's hair strands flew into her eyes due to the wind and she missed on one of the steps. Luckily, Karan was a step behind her only and caught her on time. His hand holding her by her waist, her clutching onto him by his shoulders, him looking straight into the angel in his arms and her feeling safe by the felt warmth. Karan saw that her hair strands were still irritating her and very smoothly, he glided her finger over her forehead and then on her cheek to get her hair aside. Though it was just a gentle gesture, but both of them felt something that they never felt before.
Stabilizing themselves, they both stood at some distance due to the awkward moment they just shared a minute ago. Monami looked at Karan and realized he's equally awkward by having a stranger in his arms as she is after being in a stranger's arms.
Monami - A..th..thank you!
Karan - No problem! Ab mandir ho gaya. Kahi aur chale ab?
Monami agreed and they both came near the place where they left their footwears. Karan was wearing his shoes when he saw a very old lady selling some prasad, gajra and bangles like stuff. He went towards her and Monami too followed him to know why he's going towards that really small stall.
Karan - Namaste auntyji! Aapki ijazat ho to main kuchh samaan dekh lu?
Old lady - Haan haan beta, bilkul dekh lo.
Karan nodded with a smile and started looking at whatever was available on that old lady's stall. Both Monam & that old lady was surprised that why was Karan so interested in buying something from such an unnoticeable stall when he himself is so rich and is the son of the most powerful person of the village, Raghupur.
Karan - Auntyji, aap ye wali churiyan, ye wale clips aur thodi-thodi saari mithaiyan de dijiye.
The old lady was surprised but was really happy because since the morning, no one bought anything from her and just ignored her calls while Karan is ready to buy so many things from her which would get her great money. Monami was also happy because she is aware about the conditions of the old lady, and it feels relieved to see happiness on someone else's face. The lady got everything packed whatever Karan asked her to and asked him to give her 180 rupees.
Karan - Auntyji, khulle paise to nahi honge mere paas. 500 ka hi note hai!
Old lady - Maaf karna beta lekin subah se koi bikri nahi hui hai. Mere paas bhi paise nahi hain.
Karan - Koi baat nahi auntyji, aap baki ke rakh lijiye.
The lady gave her widest smile and even Monami smiled at Karan's words as now the lady could easily manage food for days. The lady blessed him and Monami and Karan left from there to somewhere else. Now they were going towards the sugarcane fields as Karan never one before.
Monami (with a soft smile) - Karanji, thank you!
Karan - Arre it's okay! Ek baar girne se bachane ke liye kitni baar thank you bologi?
Monami - Nahi nahi, girne se bachane ke liye nahi. Vo aapne un kaki ki madad kari na, isliye. Aksar log unse cheeze nahi khareedte aur kisi achhi dukaan se mithaiyan le lete hain. Lekin aapne unki bahot madad kari.
Karan smiled at her words and blushed a little as well as she really admired him while praising him. He just put his hand in his hair as he didn't know how to react. Actually, he himself was confused why is he feeling warm in his chest whenever she takes his name.
Karan - Arre voh, maine dekha ki vo aunty bahot sad si lag rahi thi, samaan bhi vaisa ka vaisa hi rakha tha unka, so I just thought to help her a little bit. Ye sab maa ko de dunga, unhe ye wali mithaiyaan bahot pasand hain na?
Monami nodded smiling at him and while talking about random things about the village, they reached to a field of sugarcane. The long yields of sugar cane was standing proudly in the fields.
Karan - Woahh..kafi sundar hain ye! Kis cheez ka khet hai ye?
Monami - Ganne ka! A..aap ki bhasha mein sugar cane!
Karan - Oh please, I know ganna kya hota hai! Please haan!
Monami giggled and went ahead in the field. Karan too went behind her. He had a good view of the yield and was mentally impressed by the agricultural richness of Raghupur.
Monami - Karan ji, sugar cane khaoge?
Karan - Ganna taste karunga ya nahi, vo baad mein dekha jayega. (Sarcastically) Filhaal tum mere liye ek chhadi (stick) arrange karvado.
Monami (innocently) - Kyu? Aap chal nahi paa rahe?
Karan - Vo kya hai na Rani Sahiba, aapne 'Karan ji, Karan ji' keh-kehkar mujhe already 80 saal ka to feel karva hi diya hai. To maine socha kyu na 80 saal ke buddhe jaisa behave bhi karne lag jau.
Monami then realised what his words meant and she looked away, trying to hide her smile. As Karan's focus was on the sugar cane, he didn't notice her smile and went on with his words.
Karan - Aap chup-chaap hi khadi rahengi Rani Sahiba ya fir kuchh kahengi bhi?
Monami looked at him with squinted eyes and pouted slightly at the duality of his tone. One second he seems sweet and rude, the next second.
Monami (murmuring to herself) - Kaise se hain ye?! Ek pal mein khush, dusre pal khadoos...Khadoos Shergill kahi ke!
Karan didn't receive any response from Monami, so he turned back only to find her lost in her own world of thoughts. He came back to her and shook her slightly, bringing her back to earth.
Karan - Jawaab nahi mila mujhe abhi tak.
Monami (crossing her arms) - Theek hai, nahi bulaungi aapko 'Karan ji', lekin fir kya bulau?
Karan - I have a name, Ms.! Log Karan bulate hain, aap bhi wahi bula lijiye.
Monami and Karan both broke into slight laughter and they both went to the sugar cane field. The owner of the field came and was elated to see the very praised son of the sarpanch of this village.
Field owner - Aao aao Monami beta! Arre..sarpanch ji ke bete bhi aaye hain?! Aaiye aaiye!
Karan smiled widely seeing how genuinely his parents are respected by the people of Raghupur. Monami & Karan went ahead and very fondly, Karan started seeing the yield of sugarcane, which he could never see in US.
Field owner - Chakhenge (taste) aap?
Karan (excitedly) - Kar sakta hu?!
Field owner - Kyu nahi kar sakte? Bilkul kar sakte hain!
The owner of the field got some edible sugar cane and gave it to Karan. Karan felt a little embarrassed as he never ever had sugarcane as he left for US at a very early agar and knows nothing about how diverse and beautiful village life is. Monami understood his condition from his face and smiled to herself.
Monami (with a sad pout) - Kaka, aap sirf Karan ko hi ganna denge, mujhe nahi?
Field owner - Kya baat kardi bitiya tune? Tujhe kyu nahi denge? Abhi laaya!
The old man went to get one for Monami as well and in the mean while, Karan realised that finally she called him just by his name and didn't made him feel elder. Somewhere in his heart, he felt some internal happiness. Also the familiar bond Monami and the people of Raghupur share is something that made Karan a little insecure, but happily as Monami getting affection felt soothing to him.
The field owner got Monami also the sugarcane and she started eating it the correct way. Karan immediately copied her way of eating and both of them enjoyed the sweet sugarcane. Karan thanked her through blinking his eyes and she just passed a naughty smile.
After a whole day of enjoyment and touring the village, Monami & Karan were too tired to explore more as their legs started hurting now. They mutually decided to go back home with lots and lots of stuff Karan bought being excited. Karan sensed that Monami was now happy and didn't seem disturbed, so he decided to clear his queries.
Karan - Vaise..agar bura na maano to ek baat puchu, Monami?
Monami - Haan haan, pucho. Don't hesitate!
Karan smiled and went a little closer to her, but in a moderate distance.
Karan - Umm..jis din humne gaon mein mithayi distribute ki thi uss din tum itni ghabrakar ghar kyu aa gayi thi? Kaun thhe vo log jinhe dekhkar tum itni pareshan ho gayi thi? Kya baat hai...
Karan was about to continue his asking session but stopped seeing sweat beads that started forming on Monami's forehead. Monami who was looking into Karan's eyes till now, started looking here and there to hide the pain in her eyes but Karan was quick enough to notice it.
Karan (in mind) - Oh god, ye kya kardiya tune Karan?! Achha bhala mood tha pure din! Ghume, fire, hase..and atlast, tune sab gadbad kar diya, gadhe!
Karan took a deep breath to try to comfort Monami. But before he could say anything, she herself stabilised herself, not wanting to seem weak and vulnerable in front of Karan.
Monami - A..Ka..Karan, aap kulfi khaoge? Bahot achhi milti hai inke paas!
Monami pointed towards the roadside kulfi vendor while not making an eye contact, and Karan too agreed to her suggestion. Monami said so just to make Karan feel comfortable as somewhere she too understood that he asked all the questions in curiosity but only Karan knew, how concerned he was when she ran to their home while crying.
While devouring the delicious kulfi & laughing on some poor jokes of Karan that he cracked to lighten Monami's mood, both Monami and Karan reached home only to find Raghuveer and Supriya waiting for them impatiently on the dinner table.
Raghuveer - Lo Supriya, aa gaye tumhare laadle!
Supriya (quite angrily) - Kaha thhe tum dono abhi tak?! Itni shaam ho rahi hai..lekin nahi, dono ko to bus ghumne ki hai, haina? Chalo iss nalayak ka to samajh aata hai, dimaag US chhodkar aaya hai, tu bhi Monami?!
Monami with pity apologetic eyes, went to Supriya and hugged her tightly to calm her anger.
Monami (holding her ears) - Sorry auntyji, vo mere koi galti nahi hai..Karan ne hi late kardiya. Main to keh hi rahi thi chalte hain, lekin inhe aur ghumna tha! Ab aap hi batao, meri kya galti isme?
Monami pouted very innocently making her lines sound honest and Supriya just cupped her face and caressed her head. While Karan just looked at Monami & his mother with wide eyes and 'hawww' reaction and Raghuveer just stood their admiring the two ladies.
Raghuveer - Achha ab ye sab chhodo! Bacho, tum dono jao, haath-muh dholo aur khaane ke liye aa jao jaldi.
Karan - Papa, I'll join you but mujhe bilkul bhook nahi hai, bahot khaa liya aaj. Aur maa, ye aapke liye!
Karan passed Supriya the things he bought for her and Supriya happily took it and caressed Karan's cheek lovingly. Both Monami and Karan went to their rooms to get freshened up and in some minutes, all four of them were on the dining table laughing their hearts out and enjoying their private family time.
Though Monami was happy now and her smile very well conveyed that but still, the pain she had in her eyes when Karan started the topic about her parents is still isn't ok with Karan. He mentally was determined to take her pain away. The image of her eyes containing that immense pain has sticked in his mind and anymore pain to her wasn't acceptable to him and the reason is unknown to himself too why.
Karan looked towards Monami who was laughing wholeheartedly with his mother and an unknown smile formed on his lips too. He was secretly adoring those soulful laughter that seemed very sweet to him.
Karan (in mind) - Pata nahi kyu magar tumhe dard mein nahi dekha jata, Monami. I don't know why but I want to shoo away all your sufferings. Dil karta hai tumhe aise hi haste hue dekhta rahu, pata nahi kyu...lekin..tumhari hasi achhi lagti hai aur tumhari aankho ka dard mera dil dukhata hai!
