"Baby, of course you're still the team captain. Your grades stayed up like they always do, right?" Stiles asked, walking towards the lacrosse pitch with Meilani, Scott and Isaac.
Meilani pouted as she played with the lacrosse stick in her hands. She felt selfish for worrying about a title like team captain. A title that she enjoyed keeping because it showed that just because she was a girl, that she was still up on the top with the boys. Hell, all the boys were even happy for her and her position because it took guts to do what Meilani had done. Other girls in the school wouldn't have even dared to try out for the boys' team and then actually keep up with all of them.
Granted, Meilani now had the extra stamina due to her being a werewolf, but the rest of the boys didn't need to know that.
"I mean . . . yeah and I even helped Scott keep his grades up like Coach asked. He just never told me I was actually back on the team. He said all positions were open and to come to try outs today."
"We got bigger things to deal with anyway. Did you tell Chris about his sister yet?" Isaac chimed in, freezing just inside the entrance between the two sets of bleachers.
There were already a few boys on the field that had came out to practice for try outs later on that day. Both of the nets were set up and the boys were pretty evenly divided on both sides to get their last minute drills in before they would have to show off for Finstock later on that day. The boys either stretched or threw the balls at the nets with one of them inside to practice their goal scoring.
"I texted him but he never got back to me," Meilani replied with a shrug, not knowing what else she could really do. Not like she was rich and could make a collect call to France where Chris had gone back to.
Scott and Stiles both gave the McCall female odd looks at her response. "You - you told him his sister Kate was back from the dead over a text?"
Meilani slapped her hands to her sides and groaned. "I'm sorry! I don't have the money to call a whole other country. Not like I can tell Dad why I need to call France so . . . I could only text him."
Stiles sighed as his demeanor suddenly shifted from confused to stressed as the chemosignals suddenly tainted the air around Meilani and Isaac. "Yeah, you think you have money problems? Try paying for an MRI and a visit to Eichen House."
Meilani flinched slightly at the reminder of a few months ago, clearing her throat as she tried to shake those images from her head. She was slowly starting to get better with Allison's death, but the thought still sent a shockwave of pain through her and then there's was Void. A vision she never wanted to see ever again. "Another notice?"
"Yeah, this one says final," Stiles answered sadly, shaking his head and motioning towards the lacrosse pitch to change the subject. "Now, what the hell are we even doing here anyway? We got like a hundred and seventeen million problems and worrying about our status on the lacrosse team is not one of them."
"Um . . . you might have spoken too soon," Isaac said, awkwardly clearing his throat and jerking his head towards the pitch.
Meilani and the boys all turned their attention to the right side of the pitch where Garrett ( a handsome boy with blonde hair and blue eyes ) stood with another boy with long hair that Meilani didn't know the name of. A smaller boy stood in the net and Meilani wanted to assume that he was a freshman and he saved just about every shot that Garrett and the other boy threw at him. Almost mirroring the exact way Meilani had played just after she'd gotten bit by Peter Hale.
"Who the hell is that?" Scott breathed, staring wide eyed at the athletically fit boy.
The boy in question removed his helmet with a big grin on his face to reveal a boy with dirty blonde hair and bright blue eyes. He wasn't a boy that any of the pack recognized so he had to be new to the team or the school. He raised his stick to hit it against Garrett's who held his own up for some sort of high five.
"Liam, that was awesome! You might even be our first ever freshman team captain."
Stiles' arm instantly wrapped around Meilani's shoulder when she let out a small squeak, vaguely hearing what Garrett had said since he had nearly shouted it to the whole pitch.
"Okay, maybe we should practice a bit," Isaac commented, tearing his eyes from the skilled boy and over to his friends. He instantly regretted it when Meilani rolled her lips into her mouth and shuffled on her feet.
"Seriously, what is your purpose?" Stiles huffed at Isaac, steering Meilani away from Scott and Isaac before Isaac and pressing a kiss to the side of Meilani's head. "Don't listen to the big, bad werewolf. You'll be just fine."

By the time Meilani and the boys had finished their last practice before try outs later on, even Meilani was tired. She had put in her extra effort ( without using her werewolf abilities because she didn't want to cheat ) and she had to all but peel her clothes from her body. She had thrown her hair up into a high ponytail and quickly washed the sweat from her body in the showers before she threw her spare clothes back on.
When she entered the boys' locker room after doing her usual knock to let the boys know it was her, Greenberg had tapped the door open for her and she smiled gratefully at him. She twisted and turned her way through the sea of boys, waving to the ones that greeted her as she passed and already saw Stiles, Scott and Isaac surrounding Liam. Stiles was just saying hi to the boy when Meilani stood in the space between Stiles and Isaac.
"You want to explain what that was out there?" Stiles demanded, crossing his arms as he eyed the boy up and down.
Meilani knew that the boys wanted to have a little talk with Liam about his skills so Meilani could try and get a scent off him to see if he was like her and Isaac, but she didn't expect the boys to gang up on the poor freshman like this. Though, that was probably a dumb thought on her part with knowing how these three boys were.
"What - what do you mean?" Liam asked in confusion, fixing the shirt he had just pulled over his head.
"That little display out there. Your little circus act," Isaac listed, waving his hand around to the lacrosse stuff that rested in Liam's locker behind him.
"What circus act?"
"You caught every shot."
"Yeah, but I was in . . . goal?"
"Yeah, but nothing, not a single shot got past you," Stiles countered in annoyance, not liking this little boy had come out of nowhere. Maybe it was just him being the usual protective boyfriend that he was, but Stiles wanted to fling the kid across the room for coming in and disrupting his girlfriend's mojo. He knew that his girlfriend deserved the team captain status ━ much like she deserved her true alpha status ━ and he didn't want this kid to make Meilani feel like she couldn't do it. She was vulnerable enough already.
Liam stared at Stiles in confusion as if the boy before him had suddenly sprouted thirty heads. "Uh . . . yeah, dude. I was kind of the goalie. You four play this game before?"
Meilani puffed out her cheeks and decided to pipe into the conversation before the boys made this worse. "So, you're a freshman, right?"
Scott furrowed his eyebrows when Liam nodded, since the boy had never been seen around the school before. "But you weren't here last semester."
"Yeah, I transferred from Devenford Prep."
Meilani and Isaac both exchanged a look when they heard the way Liam's heart beat raised at the lie he had just told. Scott and Stiles wouldn't have been able to tell because, if Meilani couldn't hear the boy's heartbeat, she probably would have believed it was just him transferring. "No, no. You got kicked out, didn't you?"
Liam's face fell when he realized that Meilani had caught him in his lie. Clearly, with how well he played off the lie, he thought he would have gotten away with it and the four would leave him alone. Little did he know that he was talking to two walking lie detectors. He let out a scoff after a long moment of silence and crossed his arms. "Okay, kicked out or transferred, what do you guys care? I came here to play lacrosse. The team could use a few good players, right?"
"No, no, we don't need anymore good players," Stiles denied.
Meilani scrunched up her nose, knowing that Liam was right. With Jackson gone now and a few of the good seniors having graduated, they could use a few kids with talent. Meilani and Isaac couldn't hold up the team on their own. "Actually, we could use a few good ones."
Stiles opened his mouth to argue but quickly backtracked when his girlfriend sent him an intimidating look to shut his mouth. "Uh, okay, how did you get this good? Were you always this good or did it suddenly happen just once over night? Have you ever been out in the middle of the woods on a full . . . "
"Mieczyslaw Stilinski, I swear to God," Meilani threatened quietly, causing the boy to shut up finally.
"Look, I learned from my stepfather, alright? He made team captain when he was a sophomore, like Meilani," Liam replied, his eyes turning over to Meilani and he offered her the first soft smile since they started talking. "And yeah . . . I guess I'm just good." He winked at Stiles, grabbing his jacket and bookbag, pushing through the space between Stiles and Meilani.
Meilani bursted out into laughter along with Isaac as the two turned to watch Liam leave. She liked this kid. "He wasn't lying that time."

Meilani had split off from Stiles and Scott to go off to class with Isaac since the pack were all separated for the next few classes before lunch. Class was actually something that Meilani found herself beginning to look forward to. It gave her a sense of normalcy in the craziness of everything that was going on in her life. She felt like a normal teenager when the only thing she had to worry about was what happened fifty years in ago in history and not what was going on outside the school building. She never thought that school would almost become therapeutic for her.
However, it seemed like Meilani would never get a full break because Melissa had called Meilani to let her know that there had been a triple homicide of a family. One of the sons survived and was currently in the hospital being treated. She knew that her and the pack would see or hear it on the news somewhere so she wanted to give Meilani a heads up. It didn't sound supernatural so Melissa wanted Meilani and Isaac to stay out of it.
"An axe-murderer?" Kira asked, following after the group as they swerved their way through the halls and in between students after Stiles had come barreling over to them with the same news that Melissa had told Meilani about previously.
"A family murdering axe murderer," Stiles corrected.
"Yeah, I already heard about it," Meilani waved Stiles off before he could go off on a supernatural tangent when she knew it wasn't one. "My mom called me because she knew we would see it on the news."
"Perfect. Let's go!" Stiles exclaimed, pointing his thumb over his shoulder as he began to back up towards the way they came.
Meilani stopped in front of her locker next to Scott's and opened it up to get her Econ book that she held up for Stiles to see. "We have Econ in five minutes, babe."
Stiles gave his girlfriend an odd look and slowly walked back over to the small group. "Um, did you forget the part about the family-murdering axe murderer?"
"Did you forget that your dad's the sheriff? They want us to stay out of it, Stiles. I am all for staying out of one murder because I am tired. I need a break from seeing dead bodies," Meilani whined, shutting her locker and leaning against it while Scott merely leant his shoulder against his own locker.
"Mei is right, Stiles. This could just be a normal murder."
"You know, as normal as murders can get," Isaac quipped, shooting Scott a look.
Stiles stared around the pack that all seemed to simultaneously agree to stay far away from this murder since it was just a job for the cops not an alpha and her pack. "Are you guys kidding me? There's a family-murdering axe murderer and we're not going to do anything about it?"
"Maybe we should just let the adults handle it," Kira suggested cutely, smiling sheepishly at Stiles.
Stiles opened his mouth a few times but no words came out as he tried to make sense of what he was hearing. They'd never sat out on any case before and he clearly didn't want to start now incase it turned out to be supernatural. "I just . . . you four just want to stay here, school, go to class."
"Well, yeah. We're teenagers, Stiles," Meilani replied, giggling at her boyfriend's betrayed expression. "It's kind of what we do when we're normal."
"I have never heard something so irresponsible in my life," Stiles grumbled, turning away from his friends and walking off down the hall.
"You're the handsomest boy in the world and I love you?" Meilani called after Stiles with a grimace.
Stiles spun around, continuing to walk down the hall backwards as he pointed a spastic hand in Meilani's direction. "No, that is my thing. You cannot take my thing. I am disappointed in you!"
Isaac snorted as he watched Stiles turn the corner of the hallway and shook his head. "I don't know how you date him."
"What? He's adorable," Meilani mused and grinning up at Isaac while he groaned in annoyance. She pushed off the locker when the bell rang and turned to Kira with a small smile. "Hey, Kira, you know the thing you wanted to talk to Scotty and I about? Can we do it after tryouts later?"
Kira deflated slightly but it went unnoticed because it was only for a mili second and then she perked back up to how she was before. "Yeah . . . yeah sure."
Meilani offered Kira another smile before she grabbed Isaac's hand and pulling him off in the direction of their next class. Missing Scott place a chaste kiss to Kira's lip before he rushed off after the duo.
⏤⏤⏤⏤╗❀╔⏤⏤⏤⏤
The rest of the day had dragged on slowly and Stiles had made it back just after lunch, but he had no solid information on anything just yet. Not enough to say it was anything more than a job for the police. So for the time being the only thing the pack currently had to deal with besides the Berserkers was Meilani's spot as team captain.
And the fact that Scott kissed Kira.
"It was the first kiss since our actual first kiss that night Stiles was possessed," Scott explained to Stiles, Isaac and Meilani who all stood in the semi-empty locker room since half the boys already went outside for try outs.
"That's good. You kissed her," Stiles encouraged, patting Scott on the shoulder.
"I did, but I didn't," Scott countered.
Isaac eyed Scott in confusion and tilted his head at the McCall boy. "Was . . . was it on the lips?"
"Yeah."
"Was there tongue?" Stiles piped in.
"No. It . . . it was like how you kiss your grandmother when you're five," Scott whispered, focusing his gaze to inside his locker instead of on his twin and two friends that blinked at him in shock.
Meilani pursed her lips and nodded, now realizing why Scott was freaking out over the whole kiss thing. It wasn't a full kiss like their first kiss had been, a kiss that neither one had even talked about since it happened two months ago. Though, not like it was any kind of secret that Kira and Scott had feelings for each other. "You gave her a chaste kiss."
Scott huffed and slammed his locker shut in frustration, tugging a hand through his hair as he finally turned to face the trio again. "Yeah, and now it's . . . it's all weird. It's all completely weird and I . . . I don't know what to do! Maybe I should text her."
Isaac rose his eyebrows in amusement and let out a chortle of laughter. "You? Wow, okay, Scott. You don't text a girl after you kiss her unless you want her to rip you in half. You have to actually talk to her, you know that . . . don't you?"
The sound of Coach's whistle for the rest of the locker room to move out to the field cut off the rest of the conversation and the four quickly grabbed their equipment and rushed out to the field before Coach threatened them with suicide runs till they puked.
With the added pressure of her team captain status on the line, Meilani made sure to push herself in the beginning of try outs which was mostly just warms out. Finstock had them stretch out their muscles and do some sits up or push ups before making them do three laps around the field before they got ready to officially start. Kira and Malia were sat in the bleachers in support of the boys and Meilani and Meilani noticed the way Scott tried to keep his focus on try outs not on Kira who shifted uncomfortably in the stands next to Malia.
"Terrible. Awful. Pathetic," Coach commented, clicking the stop watch around his neck as the last of the boys ran past Coach to finish the laps. Meilani and Isaac had been one of the first ones back right behind Liam who had beaten them by a few seconds. "Unbelievably pathetic. Is that everyone?"
Stiles panted as he stumbled his way past Finstock and collapsed to the ground. His skin was soaked with sweat as his hair plastered to his forehead and he laid on his back as if willing God to just take him then and there. He whined when Meilani's arms hooked underneath his armpits and hoisted him up, holding him up against her chest. "Am I dead? Who was first?"
Isaac cleared his throat and rocked back on his heel, subtly jerking his head towards Liam who did push ups in the midst of the boys that had sat down on the grass to breathe before Finstock made them do any more physical activity.
"Baby, he's not human. What is he? Like a were-cheetah?"
Scott chuckled at Stiles' comment and glanced from Liam and over to his panting best friend who struggled to stand on his own two feet. "Does that even exist? Is that a thing?"
"I think he's just that good, babe," Meilani replied, patting his arm comfortingly.
"I'm gonna puke. Take me somewhere."
Meilani cooed jokingly at Stiles and pinched his cheeks and hauled him over to the side of the bleachers where no one was, plopping Stiles down on the grass. She took the water bottle that Isaac held out to her and handed it over to Stiles who instantly tore the cap off and chugged the contents inside of it.
The team was only given five more minutes before Coach blew his whistle for them to line up so they could take shots at the goal where one of the boys already stood in the net with the goalie stick and gear. Stiles had been the first one in the line with Liam right behind him and Meilani, Isaac and Scott a bit behind in the line. He scooped up the ball and took a steadying breath before he rushed forward, flicking his stick to release the ball. It soared through the air and landed right in the netting of the goalie's stick.
Meilani grimaced slightly when the boys around her, Isaac and Scott began to laugh at Stiles' expense and she pressed a kiss to Stiles' cheek to make him feel better when he stopped next to her. One of his arms wrapped around her shoulders as Liam scooped up the ball next causing the alpha tense up slightly in Stiles' arms as she watched him twirl the stick in his hands.
"Maybe he's only good in goal," Stiles offered, hoping to make Meilani feel better about her shot at team captain that loomed over her head. "You know, just totally useless on the rest of the field."
The four watched with bated breath as Liam bounced on his feet for a moment before he stepped forward and released the ball from his stick. It flew through the air perfectly and sunk right into the top right corner of the net, earning him a chorus of cheers and applause from the bystanders on the bleachers and the rest of the team.
"Maybe he's just perfect at everything. I hate this kid!"
Meilani heavily sighed and banged her head back against Stiles' shoulder. Sure, she was sad that she could lose her team captain status, but Meilani wasn't selfish. She knew that. She knew that this team needed good players if they wanted a shot at the championships this year. If that meant Liam coming on the team, then so be it. They needed him and Meilani wasn't going to hate the kid for having talent. "No, you don't have to hate him. The team needs new players.
"What about a new team captain?" Isaac reminded, earning him a sharp glare from Stiles.
Meilani puffed out her cheeks and pushed away from Stiles, her stick gripped tightly in her hands. She scooped up the ball near her as the boys near her backed up to give her room to go next now that Liam was out of the way of the goal. She allowed herself a minute to calm her racing heart and cracked her neck from side to side. Bringing back her stick, Meilani stepped forward and released the ball from her stick. The ball flew in the right direction but then curved slightly and hit the goalpost instead of the net itself.
Finstock blew the whistle and he stammered as he watched his star player miss. "Better McCall! You are better because you can play! Don't disappoint me!"
"Nice going, cupcake!" Garrett hollered from behind Meilani where he stood with Liam, his hands on his hips as he laughed at Meilani's downfall.
"Hey, Garrett! Shut up before I shove my lacrosse stick down your throat, pal!" Stiles warned, narrowing his gaze at the boy for mocking his girlfriend.
The rest of the try outs seemed to be going horrifically wrong. Liam kept getting all the right shots and moves in while Meilani and the boys struggled hard. Well, except Isaac who actually made a few shots into the goal after getting frustrated and using his werewolf abilities which only earned him a stern look from Meilani. She had wanted to go into this season using her actual abilities and not her werewolf ones, which meant that Isaac would have to do the same.
Liam quickly became the team favorite and a lot of the boys would skip their turn just to let Liam go another time. It reminded Meilani of herself when she first joined the team and was upstaging all the other boys on the field. Now it was Liam's turn and Meilani hated the small part of her that progressively grew more and more frustrated. She wanted for Liam to be able to join the team and yet there was this tiny nagging feeling in the back of her head that desperately wanted her team captain status to keep up her normalcy.
Plus, Meilani loved lacrosse and the fact she got to be a captain for the team she enjoyed playing for was the best feeling in the world. Especially because she was going down as the first female on the team and the first female team captain. Her plague had already been placed in the trophy case of the school along with her photo to commemorate her big achievement. Now it was like that achievement was quickly dropping through the cracks.
"Babe, what is going on with you?" Stiles questioned Meilani as the girl paced back and forth.
"I don't know. Just having an off day!"
"Off day? I am having physical pain watching you out there," Isaac said, gesturing to the field where the boys stood together and waited for Finstock's next instructions. "You're bombing."
"What is your purpose here again?" Stiles remarked to the blue eyed werewolf.
Isaac's face morphed from the current stressed one to a smirk as he turned his eyes to Stiles. "To make your life a living hell."
"Oh, well, you are excelling at that one, buddy!"
"Okay! Look, I didn't see any of you make any shots," Meilani countered, pointing her finger at the three boys before her with a narrowed gaze. "And no, Isaac, I will not be counting the few you made because you cheated."
Scott made a few at Meilani's comment and gestured between himself and Stiles. "Yes, but that's because Stiles and I suck. You're the True Alpha here!"
"Not on the field. I'm a human on the field."
"Well, human you is kind of sucking right now. So do you think there is any way you can use just a little bit of wolf power?" Stiles whined, pinching his fingers together a few inches apart to show it didn't take much. Just a little so Meilani could be like she was last season in their sophomore year when she was kicking ass.
"It's cheating."
"I know it is, babe, okay?" Stiles stressed and turned his annoyed expression over to Liam who spoke to a few of the boys around him with a bright smile on his face. He didn't even look tired and they had been practicing for at least an hour now. "It's just I hate seeing this little freshman come in and steal all of my girlfriend's glory after you worked your cute little tushie off. I hate it!"
Meilani shook her head and watched as Liam picked up another ball to throw at the net. She chewed on the inside of her lip as the ball left his net and sunk right into the goal as Coach Finstock yelled out praises to the little freshman. It caused a sudden rush of frustration through Meilani as her red alpha eyes flashed for a moment.
Game on.
Finstock blew his whistle twice, signaling for the team to come towards him. He tucked his clipboard underneath his arm and motioned for the team to step closer to him. "That's it. Huddle close everybody. Better McCall and Stilinski, grab the long sticks. You're covering the goals for two-on-ones. Let's go. Line it up!"
Meilani tossed her own stick to the sidelines along with Stiles' before she bent down to grab one of the two long sticks and pulled her helmet on over her head. She high-fived Scott and Isaac as she passed them with Stiles and she stopped a few feet from the goal with Stiles as she turned to him with a wary smile.
"We still don't know if he's a werewolf, too. If he is, then he'd just be cheating and we'd just be cheating the cheater."
"Babe, he's not a werewolf, okay? I would know because I'd get a scent. Isaac even said he hadn't gotten anything off him. He's normal," Meilani denied, glancing over her shoulder to Liam who was already pulling on his helmet to step up first.
"Maybe you just have to get close enough like when we were trying to figure out who you smelt in the locker room last year and we found it was Isaac. Maybe it's like that again."
Meilani scoffed softly and subtly nodded her head in Liam's direction for Stiles to glance over. "Looks like I'll get my chance."
Stiles grabbed the cage of Meilani's helmet and forced her to look back at him. He lovingly knocked the front of his helmet against hers and he smiled that same smile at her that practically screamed I love you. "Hey, don't stress. You'll be fine, baby. You take down this little runt in your sleep.
"Stilinski, make out with your girlfriend on your time!" Finstock barked at Stiles who immediately stepped away from Meilani while the rest of the boys laughed at Stiles' embarrassment.
Meilani and Stiles stood on their respective sides of the net while they both readied themselves for who would take off first. Garrett had kicked at the grass before he took off at the couple, charging towards them at a decent speed. As he got close enough to them, he went to spin around them and do some sort of fancy move to impress Finstock, but it only resulted in Meilani swiftly twisting her stick and slamming it down on Garrett's stick knocking out the ball from his net.
"That's my girl!" Finstock blew the whistle while he cheered for Meilani and Stiles who grinned at each other and high-fived. He turned to the two boys that stood behind him and shook them by the cages on their helmets. "She is like a daughter to me and the boys are like sons to me."
"I love you, too, Coach!" Meilani yelled towards Finstock who she giggled at when she noticed him stiffen at being caught.
The next few boys that stepped up to Stiles and Meilani had met the same fate. Stiles had even charged Isaac and sent the blue eyed boy onto his back when it was his turn. Meilani had teased the poor boy about being taken down by Stiles and he merely held up a finger to her before taking the hand she offered to help him up.
Then it was Liam's turn.
Liam scooped up the ball from the grass and twirled the stick around in his hands. He took a breath before he was off towards the couple who were ready for him. Meilani and Stiles both tried to block him from going down the middle until he spun around Meilani at the last second and got past her. He rushed off towards the goal and threw the ball at the net, sending it right over the goalie's shoulder and into the net.
The crowd around them began to cheer and holler for Liam as he grinned brightly at his millionth goal of the day. He skipped past Meilani and Stiles as Coach yelled praises to him once again.
"That was luck!" Malia snapped from up on the bleachers, tossing her homework to the side and pointing a finger at Liam.
"Oh, no, Mal. Don't get involved," Meilani pleaded, knowing the werecoyote could hear her just fine.
"I know what I'm doing," Malia whispered so only Meilani could hear her before her attention turned back to Finstock. "I demand a do-over!"
"Sweetheart, there's no do-overs in lacrosse. This is also a practice," Finstock laughed at the werecoyote.
Malia shifted her weight to one foot and crossed her arms, shooting Finstock a challenging look. "Ten bucks on Meilani and Stiles!"
Meilani and Stiles exchanged a look when Finstock agreed to the bet and had Liam start back up again for a second round. The true alpha of the two puffed out a tired breath and brushed past her boyfriend to get back to her side of the net. He pat her comfortingly on the shoulder as she did so and whispered words of encouragement to her as she passed him.
Once again, Liam scooped up the ball and waited for the couple to be ready. Meilani let out a low growl of frustration before she took off with Stiles at the same time as Liam had. Much like the last round, Liam had effortlessly spun around Stiles. However, Meilani was next up and she dropped her shoulder, sending Liam flying over it and onto his back with a loud crack.
Finstock's whistle fell out of his mouth and he quickly ran over to the groaning boy while the rest of the team surrounded the trio and Finstock. "Don't touch him! Don't move him!"
"I'm okay, Coach. I'm alright," Liam assured Finstock, struggling to his feet and let out a cry of agony when he put weight on his injured leg. Meilani was quick to catch the boy before he fell back down to the ground and wrapped one of his arms around her shoulders to keep him up. The freshman boy dropped his head to look at his leg that looked a little off. "I think it's my leg."
"We should probably get him to the nurse," Stiles suggested, wrapping Liam's other arm around his shoulder and hauling Liam away from the team with Scott and Isaac hot on their tails.
This was totally not how Meilani wanted her new semester to go.
⏤⏤⏤⏤╗❀╔⏤⏤⏤⏤
Finstock had offered to call an ambulance for Liam but Stiles offered to just drive Liam over in the Jeep so they could get him there as soon as possible. He didn't like the sight of the boy but he also didn't want the poor boy to suffer in pain while they waited for an ambulance when Stiles could get there quicker. Noah would waive whatever speeding ticket he got anyway for him if he knew why Stiles rushed the poor boy to the hospital to get checked out.
After getting permission from Finstock and promising him that they'd call him later with news, Meilani and the boys headed out. Not before Scott had finally talked to Kira about their kiss and finally kissed her like he meant it. She wasn't exactly sure if Scott and Kira were together or not just yet, but Meilani was still incredibly happy for her twin finding his happiness again with Kira. She was good for him and she just hoped they could work out because Scott deserved that much.
Liam had hobbled out of the Jeep and Isaac and Stiles both wrapped one of Liam's arms around their shoulders to help him into the hospital. Meilani hadn't seen her mom near the front desk so she walked up to the nurse stationed there, Annabeth, and she smiled in welcome to the girl who brightened at the sight of Meilani. She had rattled off a bit of what happened to the girl before Melissa appeared in Meilani's peripheral vision a few feet away.
"Hey, Mom," Scott greeted, awkwardly waving to his mother with a small smile.
Melissa placed her hands on her hips and sighed, not even wanting to know what happened to the poor boy. She walked over to the small group as Isaac and Stiles both helped Liam into the wheelchair that was nearby and stepped back to allow Melissa to take the spot behind the wheelchair. "Don't worry, sweetheart. We'll take good care of you."
Meilani frowned and dropped into the chairs across from the reception area with a low whine. She banged her head back against the wall behind her and decided to make herself comfortable since she had no idea how long her mom would be with Liam.
Stiles squatted down in front of Meilani and rubbed her knee soothingly. "Baby, I promised Malia I'd help her study for Math. Do you want me to cancel and stay with you?"
"No, I'll be fine. You go help Malia. She needs you right now more than me," Meilani assured her boyfriend, giving him a tired smile.
Stiles eyed her for a long moment, debating on going against her wishes and canceling on Malia and staying with his girlfriend. Until Isaac took the seat next to Meilani and assured Stiles that he'd stay with Meilani and Scott while Stiles ran off to help Malia. He sighed heavily but relented and pressed his lips softly to Meilani's. "You know this isn't your fault right, baby?"
Meilani silently shrugged and absentmindedly played with the strings that hung from Stiles' flannel sweater. She felt awful that she was the reason that Liam was in the hospital. If she hadn't been so blinded by her desire to keep her title, then he would be just fine. She had been doing so well at practice with trying to be positive for the young boy and welcome him to the team with open arms. Then the she was blindsided by her own desires like other people's needs didn't matter. Since when did Meilani not care about other people?
"Baby, if you used any wolf power than the kid wouldn't limping, he'd be crawling back to the other half of his body."
Meilani scoffed softly and tugged gently on the string in her hand. "Yeah and if I wasn't so worried about team captain and my own desires, he wouldn't be hurt either."
Stiles frowned and tapped underneath Meilani's chin to get her to look him in the eyes and he moved his hand to tuck a piece of hair behind her ear. "Lani, it's okay to put yourself first sometimes. Team captain, Alpha werewolf. You're still only human on the inside. You are allowed to be selfish every now and then." He bent down once more to press another kiss to Meilani's lips before he pat Isaac and Scott on the shoulder before he ran out of the waiting room to meet up with Malia at the library.
Not too long after Stiles left, Meilani couldn't sit still anymore and she asked the boys if they could go find the room Liam had been taken to. It wasn't hard for Meilani and Isaac to find the room with their hearing and smell and Meilani, Isaac and Scott stopped outside of the room when they heard Liam speaking to the doctor who had apparently been his step-father. He explained to his step-father what happened out on the pitch that day and Meilani felt her heart hurt when she heard Liam ask his step-father if he was mad at him.
Meilani missed the end of the conversation when her phone began to buzz in her back pocket. She pulled it out to see Lydia's name flash across her screen and she exchanged a look with the boys before picking up. "Hey, Lyds. You okay?"
"Where are you? I couldn't call . . . I couldn't get away from the deputy. You need to get to the hospital. You need to get there right now. The son, the only one who survived . . . he's there."
Meilani tensed as her eyes quickly scanned the area around her, Isaac and Scott as if the boy would suddenly appear in her vision through the walls. She noticed Isaac search around also and remembered that Isaac could hear the conversation perfectly. "So am I. I'm at the hospital with Isaac and Scott."
"Then find him. Find Sean Walcott."
Meilani wasn't given a chance to respond before Lydia hung up to let the alpha wolf go do what she did best. She pocketed her phone and both her and Isaac took off in a run down the hall with Scott following after them, yelling for them to tell him what was going on. The doors of the elevator at the end of the hall closed before Meilani and Isaac could get on so they skidded to a stop and took off down the next hallway.
The sound of Melissa McCall's screams could be heard and Meilani turned another set of hallways to see Melissa on the ground with a teenage boy savagely gripping at her to drag her back into the room. No one else was in the hallway and the lights above flickered every few seconds making the hall dimly lit.
Meilani let out a thunderous roar and the teenage boy's head whipped in Meilani's direction to see both her and Isaac already shifted. Blood soaked down the front of his white hospital t-shirt and covered the entirety of his mouth, razor sharp teeth poking out of his mouth as he hissed at the three new intruders. The boy barely had time to blink before Meilani was off down the hall and tackling him to the floor and off Melissa while Scott rushed to Melissa's side to check on her.
The teen boy, who Meilani wanted to assume was Sean, twisted and wound up with his back pressed up against the wall while Meilani growled in his face. He snarled back at her and used his feet to push Meilani away from him and crashing into the wall adjacent them. Sean was on his feet and out of sight by the time Meilani had pushed back to her feet. She turned to her mom with wide eyes to see if she was hurt as blood smeared across her purple scrubs.
"I'm alright, Mei."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, just go get that son of a bitch!" Melissa snapped, pointing in the direction that Sean ran off in.
Scott nodded for Meilani and Isaac to go while he stayed to make sure Melissa stayed safe.
Meilani growled and took off in a sprint again with Isaac at her side as they both used the new scent to track down Sean. They could hear the new screams of Liam and followed them towards the door that lead to the stairs to take them to the roof above. Blood was smeared on the pristine white wall along the steps and it only fueled Meilani and Isaac to pump their legs harder to get to the roof.
The duo burst through the roof door to see Sean holding Isaac hostage up on the ledge of the roof, dangerously close to the ledge where the two could go tumbling down to their deaths. Well, maybe Sean's death since Meilani wasn't really sure what the hell the boy was.
"Stay back!" Sean yelled at the two, taking another step away from Meilani and Isaac.
"You don't need to do this," Meilani gently said, holding her hands up in defense to the boy to show she wasn't going to hurt him. She just wanted to coax the boy down from the ledge so she could make sure Liam didn't get hurt any worse than he already was. A broken or sprained ankle was enough for one night. "Whatever it is. Whatever you are, my pack and I can help you. Let me help you."
Sean's grip tightened slightly around Liam who panted and tried to get away from the boy that gripped onto him. "Wendigos don't need help. We need food!"
Liam screamed out as Sean suddenly spun him around and sent him flying over the edge of the roof. He had caught onto the ledge of the roof with his hands as Meilani and Isaac leapt up onto the ledge to fight off the boy. Isaac took over Sean while Meilani rushed to the ledge to try and pull Liam up. She wrapped her hands around Liam's forearms and began to slowly tug him up, grimacing when she heard Isaac's body crash to the ground a distance away.
Hands suddenly wrapped around her biceps and she looked up the arm to see that it was Sean that had gripped onto her. He had strength thanks to his Wendigo side and was able to slowly pry Meilani's hands away from Liam's, causing one of Liam's hands to slip off the roof while he struggled to hold on with his one hand. He panted nervously as he tried to bring his other hand back up, but it was no use as he couldn't hold his body up enough to pull it back up.
Meilani tried to fight off Sean on her back as his grip tightened on her arms to keep her from saving Liam from his death. The freshman freaked out as his fingers slowly began to slip from the roof as it began to get difficult to his body weight up with only one hand, by his mere fingertips at that. Time seemed to go in slow motion as Meilani watched Liam's fingers slowly release from the roof and she barely had a second to think before she brought her mouth around Liam's arm and bit to down to keep him up with her teeth. His screams filled the area and Sean's weight was shifted off her.
Meilani replaced her mouth with her hands that she finally had back and hauled Liam back up onto the roof, placing him down on the roof behind her. She turned to see Sean dead next to her feet with an axe in his back. The intruder was dressed in full back and he walked away from the scene, glancing over his shoulder at Meilani to show a bald man with no eyebrows and no mouth. He brought black leather gloved finger to his lips and then was suddenly gone from sight.
Liam's screams brought Meilani back to the new situation she had created and she gulped as she took in the gnarly sight of the bite mark on Liam's arm where she'd bit him. Isaac groaned and panted as he stumbled back to Meilani's side and he gasped when he noticed the wound that Liam now sported on his arm.
"Holy shit, Meilani. You bit him!"
Meilani couldn't tear her eyes away from the wound she had inflicted on the poor innocent freshman.
What did she just do?
