You spent the morning cleaning up your apartment, vanilla-scented candles burning in the corner as Christmas music played in the background. You took the day off, and for once, everything felt calm.

Looking around satisfied, you admired the spotless countertops, the neat stacks of books, and the ropes of lights you had taped along your living room window. Everything felt cozy and a lot more Christmas-y.

You were about to settle down on the couch with a cup of hot chocolate when you heard faint sounds coming from outside. The familiar clinking of keys, footsteps shuffling in the hallway.

Curiosity got the better of you, so you stood up and cracked open your door.

There he was, Jake, standing by the entrance of his apartment, hanging up the mistletoe wreath he had bought from the child at the Christmas market.

He placed a small bear plushie in the center - it wore a Santa hat and held a tiny gift box. The sight made you smile. He was so focused on his decorating that he didn't notice you at first, until he turned around and caught your eye.

"Hey," Jake greeted with a grin, dusting his hands off. "You're just in time. Wanna help me finish decorating my place?"

You blinked, surprised by the invitation for a moment. But then you nodded, stepping outside. "Sure, I'd love to."

Jake's apartment was warm when you entered, with a Christmas tree in the corner. It wasn't decorated yet, although boxes of ornaments lay scattered around. The familiar ornaments from your shopping trip were there, the ones you helped him pick out that day.

"Looks like you need some help with this," you said playfully, standing in front of the tree, glancing at Jake.

He laughed. "Yeah, I saved the best part for the last."

You started decorating the tree - the sound of jazz music from his speaker filled the air, and soon, the two of you were laughing as you fighted over which ornaments to hang where.

After finishing hanging up ornaments, you pointed toward the top of the tree. "I want to put the star up there."

Jake chuckled, stepping aside. "All yours."

You climbed onto a small step stool to reach the top, carefully placing the star in the center. When you stepped down, you both stood back to admire the tree, your arms brushing lightly as you stood close.

"It looks perfect," Jake said, his eyes on the tree. He looked peaceful.

The afternoon passed as you hung small elves on door handles, lights across the windows, and even Christmas stockings by the shelf, joking that Santa would have to enter through the balcony since there was no fireplace.

The sun was setting, its light turning the white walls golden as you stood in the living room with Jake. It was then that you realized how long you had been at his place.

"I should probably head back," you said, although you didn't actually want to leave.

The coziness of Jake's place, filled with decorations you helped pick out, made it feel like you'd left a small part of yourself there. It wasn't just his space anymore, there was a hint of you in it now, and that made it feel different.

As you made your way to the door, Jake stopped you. "Wait a second," he said, going through a box by the couch.

You tilted your head, curious about what he was searching for. Finally, Jake pulled out a small white bunny plushie, wearing a Santa hat and holding a candy cane in its hand, and an exactly identical but slightly bigger one. He held them out to you, a small smile tugging at his lips.

"I thought you could hang this on your mistletoe wreath, like how I did with the bear," he said as he raised the small one, his eyes meeting yours with that familiar teasing glint.

You blinked in surprise, taking the plushies from him. They were soft and fluffy. "You sure?"

Jake nodded. "Consider it a matching set."

"Thanks," you gave the bigger plushie a pat on the head with a smile.

You left his apartment and made your way to your own door. You hung the smaller bunny plushie in the middle of the wreath, mirroring how Jake had done it with his bear.

With a satisfied smile, you gave the plushie one more affectionate tap on the head before stepping inside.

Later that evening, after a long, relaxing bath scented with cinnamon and sweet spices, you flopped onto your bed. As you scrolled mindlessly through Pinterest, a small ad popped up that caught your attention.

It was for Christmas-themed plushies, and your eyes widened when you saw the exact same bear and bunny plushies that Jake had.

Curious, you tapped on the ad, reading through the product description. Your heart skipped a beat when you read one particular line: "These plushies are designed with magnets in their centers and will 'hug' when placed close together."

Your hand reflexively tightened around the bunny plushie beside you, remembering how Jake had given it to you. Had he known about this?

Was it just a cute coincidence, or was there something more to the fact that he gave you the matching plushie to the one he had on his door, that would 'hug' when placed together?

You sighed and tried to shake the thought from your mind, but it refused to let go.

There were so many small, subtle things Jake had done lately that made you wonder. However, it never seemed to go beyond that.

Just small moments, subtle gestures. Nothing ever clear enough for you to know what he was really feeling.

With a frustrated sigh, you hugged the bunny plushie closer. It was a cute gesture, sure. But was it just that? Whatever it was was driving you insane already.
