Prologue

Two cats gathered under the full moon, gazing down at a glittering pool. One of them had star-speckled fur, while the other did not.

"I'm sorry about this," mewed Stoneteller, glancing over at her friend, a tom with fiery orange fur.

Lion's Roar lashed his tail. "Sure, I can forgive you, but I don't understand. How is this vision supposed to help us? And in the name of the stars, how is a monster going to save us?"

The starry-furred she-cat's eyes gleamed with a mixture of worry and hope. "The ancestors have shown me glimpses of a creature unlike any we've ever seen. It moves with the stealth of a shadow and possesses the strength of many cats combined."

Lion's Roar's fur bristled. "But how can we trust such a beast? It sounds more like a threat than a savior."

Stoneteller touched her nose to the pool's surface, causing ripples to spread outward. "The future is never certain, my friend. But in times of great peril, even the most unlikely allies can turn the tide."

The orange tom's tail twitched uneasily. "I hope you're right, Stoneteller. For all our sakes."

As they spoke, the moon's reflection shimmered in the pool, and for a heartbeat, both cats thought they saw the silhouette of a creature with eyes that gleamed like amber in the darkness.

"Is... is that her?" Lion's Roar asked, his voice shaking.

Stoneteller hummed thoughtfully. "It is. They call her 'The One Who Is Dragged Through Blood'."

She then stood up, lashing her spindly tail. "We'd better update the Tribe."

Turning to face the cats scattered throughout the cave system, Stoneteller's gaze swept over the scene. A few kits squabbled over an eagle carcass near the entrance. The pool, nestled deep within the cave, drew some cats to drink from its waters, while others looked to it for guidance from their ancestors.

"Cats of the Tribe of Rushing Water," Stoneteller called out, her voice echoing off the stone walls. "I have received a vision from our ancestors. A great change is coming, one that may shape our future in ways we cannot yet imagine."

Lion's Roar stood beside her, his orange fur glowing in the dim light of the cave. Despite his earlier doubts, he knew the importance of standing united before the Tribe.

"Tell us, Stoneteller," an elder called out. "What have the ancestors shown you?"

Stoneteller's eyes gleamed as she prepared to share the vision of the mysterious creature that might be their salvation—or their doom.

"A creature named Whisper is going to help us," Stoneteller announced, her voice echoing through the cave. "I don't know how or when we will see her, but we need to leave this place. It's not enough to hold our whole Tribe anymore."

A few cats bristled their fur at her words, murmurs of concern rippling through the gathered Tribe.

A young cat looked up, fear shining in his orange eyes. "Are you sure, Stoneteller?" he mewed, his voice quavering.

Stoneteller gazed at the young cat with a mixture of sympathy and determination. "The ancestors have shown me this path, little one. While change can be frightening, we must trust in their wisdom."

Lion's Roar stepped forward, his tail held high to reassure the Tribe. "We've faced challenges before," he reminded them. "If Stoneteller says we must move, then we will find a way to do so safely."

An elder called out from the back of the cave, "But where will we go? This mountain has been our home for generations!"

Stoneteller closed her eyes for a moment, as if seeking guidance from the ancestors once more. When she opened them, her gaze was steady and resolute.

"The journey ahead will not be easy," she admitted. "But with Whisper's help and our own strength, we will find a new home where our Tribe can thrive. We must have faith in each other and in the path set before us by our ancestors."

The cave fell silent as the cats contemplated their leader's words, the weight of the coming change settling over them like a heavy mist.
