Chapter Sixteen

A few days had passed since the encounter at the refinery, and while Amethyst hadn't fully reconciled with the Bad Batch, she could feel the tenuous threads of their bond slowly regaining strength. In the tranquility of the forest, she found herself basking in a patch of sunlight outside her secluded hideaway, the warmth of its rays a soothing balm to her troubled soul.

Suddenly, the familiar hum of engines reached her ears, a sound she knew all too well. Her heart skipped a beat as she recognized the distinctive rumble of the Havoc Marauder approaching. I thought I burned the Marauder down, she mused, a pang of uncertainty flickering within her. With a silent resolve, she flexed her claws and rose to her feet, her gaze fixed on the approaching ship.

As the Marauder touched down, the hatch hissed open, and one by one, her friends emerged into the dappled sunlight. Despite the lingering tension between them, there was a palpable sense of relief in the air, a silent acknowledgment of their unspoken bond. For Amethyst, seeing their familiar faces brought comfort and belonging, reminding her that even amid uncertainty, she was not alone.

"Amethyst," Hunter greeted, bowing his head respectfully. Amethyst met his gaze with a stoic expression, one ear twitching in mild curiosity as she regarded him, her nostrils flaring slightly.

"What is it you need now?" she grumbled, her voice tinged with a hint of irritation. While she had grown more accustomed to their presence, she still harbored a reluctance to fully embrace the idea of returning home. Her wild instincts, ever-present beneath the surface, reminded her of the delicate balance she struggled to maintain. The more she tapped into her draconic side, the harder it became to rein it in, threatening to consume her human consciousness in its fiery embrace.

"We might have a solution to your little problem," Tech announced, gesturing towards Amethyst's sturdy, glossy, lilac-hued form basking in the sunlight. Amethyst emitted a low rumble of acknowledgment, her eyes narrowing inquisitively as she regarded him.

"And why would I trust humans to help?" she questioned, her voice hinting at skepticism. Despite her growing familiarity with the Bad Batch, Amethyst remained wary of relying too heavily on their assistance.

"Well, for one, we're your friends. That ought to count for something, doesn't it?" Omega interjected, her voice laced with sincerity. Amethyst whirled around, her smooth purr turning into a menacing growl.

"I killed you once, little one. I'll do it again," she warned, her tone leaving no room for negotiation. Omega flinched at the reminder of their previous encounter, her eyes widening in apprehension.

"No, sorry, but I won't revert to my weak human form. I'm content being a wild animal," Amethyst declared, her resolve unyielding as she rubbed her forehead between her claws.

Hunter stepped forward, his hazel-brown eyes locking onto hers. "What—" he began to say, but then he paused, sensing the depth of emotion behind her fierce exterior. With a sigh, he gently touched her shoulder, a silent gesture of understanding. Among the Bad Batch, he and Echo were the ones she trusted most, and he was determined to prove that their bond was stronger than any misgivings she may harbor.

She sighed heavily, the tension easing from her muscles as she shook her head in resignation. Without a word, she extended her mighty wings and wrapped her paws around Hunter, pulling him into a tight embrace. They stood locked in that embrace for a moment, the weight of unspoken emotions hanging heavy in the air.

The other members of the Bad Batch looked on, their smiles warm and genuine. It was a silent acknowledgment of the bond that had formed between their leader and the enigmatic dragoness, a testament to the trust and understanding that had finally been achieved.

In that brief moment of unity, as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the forest, the Bad Batch knew that they had overcome the greatest challenge of all: earning the trust of a dragon.
