"Why is this happening?" Sarah asked Bruce as she showed up to the ball park as Vance slammed one of the baseball boys into the fence.
"Sarah." Bruce smiled as he hugged her. "I'm not sure, really. I just got here a few minutes ago."
They leaned against the dug out as Vance smacked the boy with the baseball bat across the face, dropping it with him before turning to the pair. He rose his hand, waving. They waved back on sync. Sarah gave Bruce a questionable look. "Do you think we should ask?"
"I considered it." the Yamada boy admitted as Vance walked their way. "But, I think we should just ignore this one."
"Read my mind." Sarah smiled as Vance made it over. "How's it going, looker?"
"What's the point of me coming here if you're just gonna be late?" he gave her major attitude, taking the bag she had. "Is this why you left me here all alone?"
"Am I late?" Sarah looked at her watch. "It doesn't say I'm late."
"Both of you were late. I had to sit with these assholes for five whole minutes before that happened." he motioned back to the beaten down baseball player. "Why do you have so many notebooks?"
"To keep track of fourteen boys progress." Sarah looked past his shoulders to eye the boy on the ground. "Thirteen now."
"Thirteen is an unlucky number." Bruce shook his head. "That's practically wishing us the worst."
"True." Sarah inhaled. "Vance, go beat up another one of them."
"Or-" Bruce cut in with wide eyes. "What if we just invite someone else that's kinda dumb to make it fourteen again?"
"Like who?" Vance gave a weird look. "It'll be way quicker to just take another one of them out."
"You two are my only people." Sarah shrugged her shoulders. "Everyone else I know is younger then us."
"You know everyone." Vance looked at Bruce. "You invite someone."
"I know everyone, doesn't mean I talk to everyone." Bruce defended himself as he thought about it. "What about Robin? We love Robin."
"We do love Robin." Sarah agreed. "But he's two years younger then us, i'd hate to crowd his brain with big kid stuff."
"I'm just gonna take one of them out." Vance shook his head as he went to walk over before they both grabbed him to stop him. "Both of you are pissing me off now."
"Vance." Sarah smacked him in the chest with one of the notebooks. "You're my number fourteen. You need to know this too."
"You've already been my tutor." he hurried to follow after her.
"Mhm, for freshman year. This is sophomore year stuff." she shrugged her shoulders. "Top secret. Only I have access to it before school starts."
"Golden girl." Bruce giggle as he ran after them.
"About as golden as you." Sarah defended herself.
"Miss Sarah?" a redhead boy asked as the three finally made it to the dug outs where the boys were all lined up on the bench. "Do you know who that is?"
She turned to follow his point, seeing someone standing on the completely other side of the field. They were tall, and from what she could see wore a hat. Bruce shuffled closer to Sarah as Vance poked his head around the dug out. "Did you invite someone else?"
"No." she said back. "Why's he just standing there?"
"I can't see his face." Bruce poked his head around Sarah. "Maybe we know him?"
"Hey!" Vance yelled out as the two stood behind him. "Get the fuck out of here before I shove one of these baseball bat down your throat!"
They all watched as he turned around and walked away, stiff legged and disappearing through the fence. Sarah pulled Vance into the dug out. "That was creepy."
"Probably the one who lays the sand." Bruce shrugged his shoulders. "Just making sure we weren't doing anything illegal."
"Maybe." Sarah shrugged, nodding for him to sit down on the end of the bench while Vance stayed leaning on the gate, refusing to sit with the boys. Sarah inhaled with an embarrassed look. "Hi, boys."
"Hi!" they all said back on sync.
"I-" Sarah started.
"Hey! Dickhead at the end!" Vance yelled at the boy on the very end. "Did you not hear her? She said hi."
Sarah flashed him an odd look as the boy straightened up. "Hi, Miss Sarah."
Vance nodded and backed off. Sarah hid a smile as she passed him the bag to hold open. "Okay, so, I brought each of you a notebook. When you get it, please write your name on the inside. I use this to be able to track your progress over time and to see exactly where you're getting confused at during lessons."
She passed each of the notebooks out. "I've never tutored more then one person at a time, so this is all new to me. But, I think we can handle it. If you have any questions at any time, just ask but please wait until I at least finish a sentence. What you guys can do to keep up is write down what you think the big stuff will be."
She finished at the end of the line with a deep inhale, walking back toward Vance at the beginning. "Any questioned?"
A green eyed boy rose his hand. Sarah nodded. "What's your name?"
"Henry." he lowered his hand. "Are you gonna make sure we pass so we can play for the rest of the season?"
"That's what i'm gonna try to do." Sarah nodded her head. "I've helped a lot of students pass their classes and simplify things to make their school life easier. But, in order to do that, there can't be any embarrassment between any of us. No one's gonna make fun of you for not understanding anything. If they do...Vance, example?"
He nodded, dropping the bag and opening the fence again. The boys all stood up go look out of the fence as Bruce tossed the baby pumpkin up into the air, letting Vance hit it with the baseball as pumpkin guts went everywhere. Sarah smiled as all the boys gapped. "That's what will happen if you make any of your teammates feel bad about not knowing something."
They all hurried to take their seats as Vance walked back into the dug out, being granted one final smile from Sarah. "Any questions?"
The trio laughed as they sat in the pizza shop, Vance and Sarah on one side while Bruce was on the other. "Their faces when you smashed that pumpkin was priceless!"
"I'm pretty sure Logan was on the verge of pissing his pants." Sarah laughed alongside Bruce, Vance's arm around the booth behind her.
"That's what you told me to do." Vance defended himself with his own chuckle.
"What happened with that boy before we got there?" Sarah asked curiously. "We said we weren't gonna ask, but i'm curious."
"Me too." Bruce leaned forward on his hands.
"He was just shit talking." Vance shrugged his shoulders.
"About what?" Sarah leaned on her elbow.
"You guys." Vance shrugged. "He won't say anything again though."
"About us?" Bruce was taken back. "Me and Sarah?"
"I know." Vance mocked his shock. "How dare anyone say something bad about Denver's Golden girl and Golden Boy?"
"What did he say?" neither found his joke funny, asking on sync.
"Nothing, I took care of it." Vance rolled his eyes. "Can we forget about it?"
"No, what did he say? For real." Sarah pushed on for an answer.
Vance exhaled as removed his arm from around her, Bruce leaned forward for an answer. "Just that the two of you only get special treatment because you guys...help some of the teachers out."
"What's so bad about that?" Sarah shrugged. "It's kinda true. We do help the teachers out, that's why they like us so much."
"Yeah." Bruce agreed.
"Not that type of help." Vance gave her a look. "A different type of help."
It took them both a second to catch on before Bruce cringed completely. "He really said that?"
"Why would anyone think that?" Sarah gapped as she sat up straight.
"No one thinks that. I told you, he was just shit-talking." Vance shrugged his shoulders as he took the rest of Sarah's drink and poured it into his own.
"Like we can't be good students without having to do something for it." Bruce rolled his eyes. "That's so stupid."
"All while he can't pass his classes." Sarah scoffed his disbelief. "Boys are so stupid. No offense. Not you guys."
"I'm gonna get him off the team." Bruce nodded his head. "If his grades don't do it first."
"Don't worry about it. Either of you." Vance shrugged as he put his arm back around Sarah. "I took care of it. I'll do it again if anyone else has anything to say. But, they won't."
Sarah gave a small smile as he leaned onto his shoulder. Bruce exhaled with a shake of his head. "I can't wait to tell Miss Bell about that."
"I know right? Your Dad and I are gonna talk about it during lunch." Sarah agreed with a nod of her head.
"Holy shit." Vance shook his head. "Maybe if you guys weren't best friends with your teachers, people wouldn't say that sort of thing."
