"I hate this road." Sarah admitted as her and Vance took a turn down the road she was suppose to go on.
"Why?" he didn't seem too bothered by it, despite never having to walk down it much.
Sarah used her head to nod toward a house that had a boy sitting in the front. He looked maybe a year or two older then them, Vance remembered seeing him a few times. "Who's he?"
"A weirdo. That's who he is." Sarah avoided looking over, her entire head turning. "You should have heard what he said to me last time I was here. I had never heard something so sick in my life!"
"Never heard something so sick in your life?" he mocked her in humor, glancing over toward the boy she'd been talking about. He was looking over, Sarah finally catching his attention. Vance rolled his eyes. "Want me to kick his ass?"
"No, i'm gonna be late we if do that." Sarah pulled his arm a little harder so they'd hurry.
"Hey, Sarah!" the boy called out.
Vance teamed his head back, blinking in disbelief when she let his arm go to hold his hand. He froze for a second before she tugged harder, making him follow. "What the hell are you doing?"
"Shh." she glanced over her shoulder, seeing as the boy stared, but no longer was yelling out to her. when he walked back inside, Sarah let Vance's hand go. "You know what makes me so angry?"
He gave her a weird look, holding his hand up. "Hello?"
"The fact that I can't even get the smallest bit of respect not to be yelled at from across the road, unless there's another guy with me. I mean, seriously, isn't that just so...fucked up?" Vance no longer was in shock with the fact that she'd taken his hand, now too in shock with her language. He started to laugh. "Shut up! Of course you'd think that was funny."
"No, I just can't believe you said that." he corrected her train of thought.
"Whatever." Sarah waved him off.
"If you don't want that guy to mess with you anymore, don't let him." the blonde shrugged like it was that easy. "Works for me."
"He's older then I am." Sarah gave him a wild look. "And bigger."
"So?" Vance shrugged his shoulders. "If you know how to fight, it's not like it matters."
"And what makes you think I can fight?" she gave him a questioning look, her eyebrows rose.
"Isn't your Dad a cop?" he shrugged. "He doesn't teach you any of that?"
"No, because it's different." Sarah pointed out, approaching the Blake house. "This is me."
Vance looked at the house. "Where do you want me tomorrow?"
"Back at my house. But, not until six because that's when my parents leave." she adjusted her bag on her shoulder. "You still get the whole day to yell at your pin ball machine for free."
"Cool." Vance cracked her a grin. "See ya."
"See ya." she called as he headed back down the road while she walked toward the front door. It swung open before she could knock, scaring her. "Hey, Mr.Blake."
"Hey, Sarah." he greeted her with a clear of his throat. "They're in there somewhere. If they give you a hard time, let me know."
"I will, but they won't." Sarah offered a little smile. Even if they had, Sarah would never tell him. Neither of the kids had told her about what their father was like when they got in trouble, but she had a pretty clear understanding what went on. That's partly the reason she liked to come over so much, the other was because she just really loved them. "See you in the morning."
Sarah walked into the house, shutting the door behind her as he went to his truck. She immediately saw Gwen on the couch, like she'd been looking out the window. "Hey, kid."
"What were you doing walking with Pin-Ball Vance?" Gwen smiled in shock. "Is he your boyfriend?"
"No." Sarah learned down to hug her. "Just making sure he passes his classes. I missed you!"
"Yeah, I missed you too." Gwen pulled away from her. "Are you staying the night?"
"Yup. And guess what I brought you?" Sarah dug into her bag, finding the stack of cards she threw it there a few days ago. "So I can kick your butt at Go-Fish again."
"Oh, yeah right!" Gwen laughed loudly. "Other way around, kid."
Sarah smiled, looking around the living room. "Where's Finney?"
"He's in his room, pouting about something. Sure he's gonna be reallllly happy to see you." Gwen shrugged, taking Sarah's bags. "I'll go put these in my room."
"Yeah, i'll be there in just a second." she nodded, watching the younger girl walk away as Sarah went down the hallway. She poked her head into Finneys room, seeing him sat on his bed and messing with something in his hands. Gwen was right, he absolutely was pouting. He looked up when there was a faint knock at his door, seeing Sarah in the doorway. "Want some company?"
"Hey, Sarah." he gave her a little smile as she walked in, heading his way. "I thought I heard your voice but I wasn't sure."
"Your Dad wanted me to watch you guys while he's out over night." she sat down next to him. Finney was the only reason she'd ever been promoted to babysitting him and Gwen. He was two years younger then Sarah was, meaning they had only one year together at the middle school. When Finneys grades had gotten higher, the principle seemed to think he'd be a great fit for tutoring some kids after school. That's how he met Robin. But, before Robin, he had Sarah who met up with him at lunch to explain the Do's and Don't of tutoring.
She always liked Finney, he was such a good kid. He was mature and quiet, he was just like her in many ways. Finney liked Sarah too, mainly because he thought she was super cool even though he knew she actually wasn't. He always liked how much she took care of him and Gwen, even when she didn't need to. Sarah stepped up a lot after she met their Dad for the first time. Finney knew why, but he liked to pretend it was just because she enjoyed his company and not because she worried about what their Dad was doing behind closed doors.
"What's going on?" she elbowed his knee. "Gwen says you're pouting."
"I'm not pouting." he sat up more to defend himself. "I'm not."
"Okay." Sarah shrugged. "Why do you look like a sad young man, then?"
Finney sighed. "I was suppose to help my friend with math today."
"What happened?" she pushed on for him to tell her. "You guys have a fight?"
"No, my Dad said no." Finney rolled his eyes. "First he says I can't go over there because he was leaving for work, and then he says he can't come here. I mean, does that make any sense?"
Sarah didn't want to laugh, but she had to at how he was talking. "No, I guess it doesn't. Your little friend with the bandana?"
"Yeah, Robin." Finney nodded. Sarah had met Robin just once before. It was last year when she was still at the middle school, she'd seen him kick the crap out of some kid and offered him a bandaid after. She saw him with Finney a few times at Grab N Go, but that was really it. "You remember him?"
"Yeah." Sarah shrugged. "Your Dads not here anymore. Why don't you invite him over now?"
"Really?" Finneys eyes lit up.
"Gwen's not going to her friends house tonight, and i'll be here. We'll have fun, i've got cards." Sarah shrugged her shoulders.
"Thanks, Sarah." Finney leaned across his bed and hugged her tightly before hoping off and running to the phone.
Gwen stuck her head into the room. "Are you gonna invite a friend too?"
"My friends not available right now." Sarah said in return. Gwen knew that Billy was Sarah's friend, she saw them together a lot when Sarah would walk to the middle school so they could walk together. Or when her and Finney would go to Grab N Go and he'd be behind the counter with her. Gwen never told Sarah about her dreams, she just couldn't do it.
"What about Pin-Ball Vance?" Gwen's suggestion made Sarah laugh as she stood up.
"That's not a very good idea. Maybe another time." Sarah shut Finneys door, hearing him talking from the kitchen. "Wanna go pick up a pizza while Finney waits for Robin?"
