By creating a bond so unbreakable beforehand that nothing can break, even an arrest that leads one into solitary confinement and the other into a shared cell only a couple years later. Makayla and Sam, Sam and Makayla. Two peas in a pod.ย

ย  ย  ย  Not even Earth can tear them apart.

ย  ย  ย  And as it turns out, Sam hasn't gotten any progress on contacting the Ark. He explained it to Makaylaย โ€” every time they tried to take off a wristband, the band would always die seconds after being taken off. They tried it with Octavia's and Sam'sย โ€” neither worked. They even tried to see if any of the bands that had been previously discarded by Murphy or Bellamy would work, that they were possibly still working, but their hopes were soon killed.

ย  ย  ย  "Are you sure you don't want to let me try on your wristband?" Sam asks, asking this question for a second time to his blonde best friend. Makayla shakes her head. "I don't want to risk letting the Ark think another one of us is 'dead'. I'd love to help, but the more of us that keep the bands on, the better".ย

ย  ย  ย  Sam nods sadly. "It's fine" He pauses, and Makayla can see right through it. Being best friends for so long has given her the ability to see when Sam isn't saying everything he wants to say. "What, Sam. I know something's wrong".

ย  ย  ย  He rolls his eyes. "I just feel like I'm not helping as much as I should be. I'm a fucking mechanic! Why haven't I figured out how to take the wristbands off without them losing power?" He exclaims, and Makayla sighs. "Hey, you're a genius, Sam. You'll figure it out. Not everything is supposed to come easy".

ย  ย  ย  Sam looks over at her, with a smile tugging at his lips. "Enough about me. How was being a part of the rescue party?". She forgets that she fell asleep resting against that tree the night before. She isn't sure when she fell asleep, or how long she was asleep for, or how she was able to fall asleep sitting against a tree. She's surprised she didn't get robbed of her shoes in her sleep, given the fact that there's thieves amongst them. Maybe some people have some respect.

ย  ย  ย  "Well, we found him, obviously, but Clarke almost fell in some Grounder traps and a panther tried to kill Bellamy and I" She mentions, her voice being quicker than usual when she speaks about the panther attack. She doesn't really want to mention it that much, because it was a life or death situation! Why would she want to talk about it that much?

ย  ย  ย  Sam cocks his head to the side. "So you're telling me, that the Grounders set traps to kill you guys and there's wild animals that want to make us their next meal?" He questions, and Makayla nods. "The only reason why that panther is dead is because Wells shot it. We're going to need more guns, as much as I don't like the idea of them, they'll help us the most".

ย  ย  ย  The boy nods his head, playing with his fingers as he notices how she's sitting her ankle in a way where it seems like it's injured. "Did you hurt your ankle?" He asks, gesturing to the ankle that she seems to be holding in a weird way. She nods. "When I got Bellamy and I out of the way, I must've rolled it the wrong way or hit it on the way down because I fell".

ย  ย  ย  "Get it checked out by Clarke, please. Can't have you be crippled for the rest of your life because you sprained it". Makayla laughs a little, but it dies down as she hears one of Jasper's painful moans from the level below. "She's got enough on her plate right now with Jasper, I don't want to โ€”".

ย  ย  ย  "Be a burden? She can't help Jasper every second of the day, I'm sure she'd much rather look over a sprained ankle so she doesn't have to worry about a kid who's dying for a second" Sam says, attempting to convince her to get her ankle checked. He doesn't want her to stay injured, especially with Grounders who could easily take advantage of her injury to kill her.

ย  ย  ย  She sighs. "Fine, but I'm keeping it under five minutes. Jasper needs as much attention as possible".

ย  ย  ย  Sam smiles. "Whatever works for you. I'll come down there with you and help Monty". Makayla nods, walking over to the hatch that keeps the two levels of the dropship separatedย โ€” the only thing that's really keeping them sane with Jasper's moans. She's not upset that Jasper's making a lot of painful noises, because she's sure that if she was in his position, she'd be in as much pain as he is. Getting speared on your first day on Earth is not something that you can easily move on from.

ย  ย  ย  Makayla finds Clarke sitting over Jasper, dabbing his head with a cool cloth. Concern laces her expression, her brows furrowing as she attempts to make him feel better, even if her attempts fall short. "Hey Clarke?".

ย  ย  ย  The girl's head shoots up, her brows immediately unfurrowing themselves. "Yeah?" She asks, thinking it's weird that someone's breaking her from her concentration on Jasper. "If you can leave Jasper alone for a bit, could you check out my ankle? I think I sprained it when โ€”".

ย  ย  ย  "Yeah, yeah, sure. Could you guys watch him?" Clarke asks, getting nods from both boys in the room with her. Clarke tells the girl to go outside with her, and Makayla assumes that the blonde probably just needs some fresh air. Taking care of someone, having such a burden on you, is not something that you can easily deal with. Especially with a lack of supplies.

ย  ย  ย  Clarke directs her to a rock by the entrance to the dropship, so she can easily squat down and look at it. The girl sits on the rock, untying her shoe's laces quickly so the scan doesn't take too long. Makayla wants Clarke to go back to helping Jasper as soon as possible. "How'd you say you injured it?".

ย  ย  ย  Makayla grabs a few strands of her hair and twists them around her finger. "When the panther tried to get Bellamy and I, I pulled us out of the way, but I think when I did that I must've twisted it the wrong way". Clarke nods, pulling the shoe off of the girl's foot to look at the ankle. She pulls back the tattered white sock, and looks at the slightly pink skin that's somewhat swollen. Her fingers gloss over the skin, but it causes Makayla to wince anyway. Clarke is quick to apologize, but it looks like she has an idea of what's wrong with it.

ย  ย  ย  "Your ankle is sprained, but it's not a major sprain, so just go easy on it. I'd give you crutches, or something to walk on for a bit, but we really don't have the supplies. The only thing I can really tell you to do is to not over exert yourself" Makayla nods, taking in her words. "Sorry I dragged you out here just to check over a sprained ankle".

ย  ย  ย  Clarke lets out a small laugh. "It's fine. I needed some fresh air anyway". Makayla nods, fully agreeing with her, because the dropship is crowded, and with a dying boy in there? Having that burden on yourself as well? Makayla would probably smash her head into a table at that point.

ย  ย  ย  Clarke goes back into the dropship after another one of Jasper's painful moans echoes through the camp, leaving Makayla out there by herself on the rock. But she doesn't mind itย โ€” what else is she meant to do? Her eyes find the clouds hidden behind branches and leaves, and she smiles. A couple days ago she would've been rotting in her cell, only having a small view of space. But now? She's got millions of colors around her, fresh air, and a large smile plastered on her face.

ย  ย  ย  Even if there's an impending doom looming over her and everyone else.

ย  ย  ย  Makayla's no doctor, but she knows damn well that his condition isn't good, frankly, it's probably worse than before. She doesn't know of anything she could do to help, but she's there for moral support. And, for Sam.

ย  ย  ย  Makayla's essentially become Monty and Sam's personal assistantsย โ€” she's cooped up in the dropship with them almost all day, helping them look over their projects or getting them some sort of substanceย โ€” whether it's water or foodย โ€” or just keeping them company. Sometimes, they've gotten so bored they've been willing to listen to one of Makayla's many stories about Earth, or even the Ark.

ย  ย  ย  What doesn't help is that they're right next to Jasper, who's moaning every couple minutes doesn't help anyone's concentration. She's almost sure that someone is plotting a murder on the outside of the dropship, and she wouldn't be surprised if that someone is named John Murphy.

ย  ย  ย  Makayla's learned a lot in the last two days. Monty and Sam have told her stories from when she was stuck in solitary, such as things from Sam's job as a mechanic or one of Monty's many stories about some sort of reckless excursion with Jasper. She doesn't necessarily mind being their assistant, or their personal talking buddy, but she wishes she could do more.

ย  ย  ย  At the moment, she really wishes she could do more, because Clarke's going on another tangent about Jasper's wound. She feels like she's heard the same thing twenty thousand times: 'The Grounders cauterized his wound. Saved his life'. Or, she hears: 'I wish I knew what to do to help him'.

ย  ย  ย  And there it is again. Clarke lets out a sigh, for what seems like the millionth time, and announces the same thing Makayla keeps hearing. "The Grounders cauterized his wound. Saved his life". She'd open her mouth to say something, but she's preoccupied with her ankle. Wells had shown her the extra clothes from the kids that died, and told her that she might as well take some since nobody's really using any. Wells ended up helping her cut up one of the shirts into makeshift bandages, and told her that she should wrap her ankle with it.

ย  ย  ย  So, she's doing just that. Her back is propped up on the wall of the dropship, her body behind Sam's as he sits and fiddles with one of the wristbands. Her shoe's a couple feet away from her, as well as her sock, as she had lazily thrown it away when she decided to take matters into her own hands with her ankle. Finn passes by her, after what seems like hours of pacing, deciding to speak up.

ย  ย  ย  "Saved his life so they could string him up for live bait. Garden of Eden this ain't" Finn states, essentially stating the obvious. Chucking her shoe at Finn's head looks like a really nice idea at the moment, but she refrains from doing so. "This is infected. He could be septic" Clarke announces, as if she already hasn't. Makayla wants to scream, because she feels like she's going insane with the amount of repeated phrases she's heard in the last forty-eight hours.

ย  ย  ย  Clarke looks over at the two boys, questioning if they're making any progress. Monty seems dazed, staring at his best friend in a deep trance. Sam on the other hand, just remains quiet. He's tired, and hasn't been getting a good night's sleep since he's been cooped up all day, working away at wristbands that don't seem like they're ever going to work again. Clarke's not having it though, she immediately snaps at them, calling their names, which snaps Monty out of his trance.

ย  ย  ย  "That would be a firm no" The boy states, his voice littered with exhaustion and annoyance. Clarke lets out a huff as Makayla finally gets the cloth to be securely wrapped around her foot. She really doesn't know how it's going to stay, but she grabs her sock and hopes that it'll be enough to hold onto her makeshift bandage.ย

ย  ย  ย  A figure appears on the ladder into the second level of the dropship, just as Clarke decides that her mother would know what to do. It's Wells. Makayla gives him a smile, which he is quick to return. It really seems like Makayla is the only one who really likes Wells, because she doesn't treat him like he was the one to lock them up, or float their parents, or anything else on the list of things that the Chancellor has done to fuck up their lives.

ย  ย  ย  "How's he doing?" The boy asks, and Makayla can see the real genuine concern in his voice. She doesn't doubt for a second that he feels bad, and wants to help, but like Makayla, he doesn't know what to do. Clarke doesn't seem happy that Wells decided to come up to the second level of the dropship with them. "How does it look like he's doing, Wells?".

ย  ย  ย  Makayla rolls her eyes, because another thing she's learned is that Clarke does not like Wells, at all. Makayla respects Clarke, she sees her as a well-meaning person, but her opinion on Wells? That's not something she can get behind, whatsoever.ย

ย  ย  ย  She finally slips her sock on, covering the makeshift bandage quickly before grabbing her shoe. In the background, Wells tells Clarke that he's just trying to helpย โ€” and it really does seem like that's what he's trying to doย โ€” but Clarke, yet again, doesn't want him there. Makayla slips her shoe on, carefully as to not disrupt her makeshift bandage's placement, and looks up at the Griffin girl.

ย  ย  ย  ย Her brows are furrowed, as she lets out a sigh and lets Wells help. "Right. You want to help? Hold him down" She commands, and Monty perks his head up at this. Makayla's quick to figure out that Clarke isn't about to do something that they'll all be happy aboutย โ€” and by the looks of it, she's probably going to use that knife she's holding to cut something off of the poor boy's body.

ย  ย  ย  Makayla lets out a sigh, and grabs her laces. She doesn't really want to look at what's happening to Jasper, especially because she still blames herself for what's happened to him. She bites her lip and yanks on the laces, wincing at the sudden pressure on her somewhat swollen ankle right as Jasper starts screaming in pain.

ย  ย  ย  She finds it hard to keep her eyes focused on her shoes, with Jasper's painful screams continuing to break her concentration. "Are you sure that's not killing him?" She shouts over the screams, but nobody answers her. Clarke's too focused on whatever she's doing to the boy to even notice.

ย  ย  ย  Makayla looks up just as Octavia comes up the ladder. She immediately rushes to the boy's side, concerned for his safety. She commands Clarke to stop, since it does seem like she's killing him from a bystander's point of view, but she shakes her head. "She's trying to save his life" Finn snaps.ย

ย  ย  ย  "She can't" Says a voice, making Makayla turn her head to see Bellamy, standing over them all with a stern expression on his face. She can't help but scoff, annoyed that Bellamy thinks he knows better than Clarke. Sure, whatever she was just doing with the knife might have been hurting him, but there has to be a way to save Jasper.ย

ย  ย  ย  The Grounders wouldn't save him just to let him die, right?

ย  ย  ย  Wells tries to get Bellamy to leave, but his efforts fall short as the man is easily able to move him out of the way. Clarke tries to explain to him that there would've been no point in dragging him through miles of woods just to let him die in the dropship, but Bellamy doesn't seem to agree.

ย  ย  ย  "Kid's a goner. If you can't see that, you're deluded. He's making people crazy" He asserts, which makes Makayla let out a sigh. She tries her best to see how Bellamy is truly a good person, but everything he does seems to be against what anyone else wants to do. He doesn't want to save those who have been harmed, he doesn't want to save the thousands of people on the Ark who have a limited amount of days left, and he doesn't want people to against his orders.ย

ย  ย  ย  She ties her laces, making a weak bow out of them just as Clarke decides to snap back at Bellamy. "Sorry if Jasper's an inconvenience to you, but this isn't the Ark. Down here, every life matters".ย

ย  ย  ย  She sees Bellamy roll his eyes as Clarke talks. He tries to explain to the group that he's a lost cause, but nobody wants to listen. Makayla doesn't want to listen either. She doesn't want Jasper to die, not after she already feels like his blood is on her hands.ย

ย  ย  ย  She hears Clarke explain that there's hope, especially with her extensive knowledge of the medical field. Makayla trusts Clarkeย โ€” she believes that the girl knows what she's doing, even if she's not certified. On Earth, any sort of experience matters. And Makayla will take what Clarke has to offer with hers.

ย  ย  ย  Bellamy doesn't seem to agree though. "This isn't about hope, it's about guts. You don't have the guts to make the hard choices. I do. He's been like this for three days. If he's not better by tomorrow, I'll kill him myself". Makayla absorbs his words, trying to take in what he's saying, but she just doesn't want to believe it. She bites the inside of her cheek as she feels her chest rise and fall at a more rapid pace, and she feels like the walls are closing in on themselves.

ย  ย  ย  Would he really kill Jasper?

ย  ย  ย  "I need some air" She whispers to Sam, who gives her a small nod as she makes her way to the exit. She probably would've left the dropship sooner or later even if Bellamy hadn't threatened Jasper's life, but now she really needs some new scenery. The metal walls of the dropship have started to make her feel closed off from everyone.

ย  ย  ย  She quickly gets herself down to the second floor of the dropship, and she can hear someone behind her. She doesn't look behind her though, and continues out of the dropship. She doesn't really know where she's going, but she knows that she doesn't want to be confined to the metal walls of the dropship anymore. The sun shines in her eyes almost immediately as she steps outside of the metal box, and she takes a deep breath.

ย  ย  ย  And then someone grabs her shoulder, and she immediately assumes it's a Grounder.

ย  ย  ย  Maybe it's paranoia, or maybe she's just on edge because of Jasper, but if she were thinking logically, why would a Grounder be in the camp? There's no walls, so maybe, but how would a Grounder have gotten into the camp without people ready to attack them?ย

ย  ย  ย  She goes to punch them, landing a fist to their face before she realizes that it's Bellamy. Fucking Bellamy. He doubles over, not having expected the fist to his cheek, right in front of her.

ย  ย  ย  "What the fuck?" She shouts, having been scared shitless from the sudden hand on her shoulder. Bellamy glares at her, rubbing his cheek as the pain scorches through his body. He really wasn't expecting to be punched.ย

ย  ย  ย  "Do you punch everyone that tries to get your attention?" He asks, and Makayla lets out a sigh. She's not surprised it's the first thing he says, and frankly, she's shocked that he was only trying to get her attention. She still holds the belief that he's somewhat of an asshole, so, she's obviously surprised.

ย  ย  ย  "I thought you were a Grounder! Can you blame me?" She retorts, which somehow, makes him laugh. She can still feel her heart beating out of her chest, obviously as a result of the pure fear she felt in the moment.ย

ย  ย  ย  His laughs die down. "How would a Grounder be able to make it into camp without getting everyone's attention? Did you think of that?". The girl shakes her head, knowing she wasn't thinking in the moment, but she's on edge. Can you blame her? She's literally been within ten feet of a boy who got speared through the chest, a boy who is literally moaning in pain every few minutes, for the past forty-eight hours. All she's been able to think about is how the Grounders attacked him!

ย  ย  ย  "What do you want, Bellamy?" She questions, figuring he doesn't want her attention for no reason. She tries to think about what he would want, but she really can't place it. What does Bellamy Blake want with her?

ย  ย  ย  He stares at her for a second, before deciding to speak. "Haven't seen my savior around camp for a while. Wanted to see how you were doing". She cocks her head in surprise, not having ever thought that he would care so much. She doesn't understand why he's still hung up on the whole 'Savior' thing, it was a couple days ago, and it really wasn't a big deal.

ย  ย  ย  "Why are you still hung up on the whole 'Savior' thing? We're already even, aren't we?" She inquires, and he stares back at her. She really doesn't understand what he wants now. Does he want to make small talk? What is he trying to get out of this interaction?

ย  ย  ย  He blinks a couple times. "Does a piece of meat really equate to saving someone's life?" He asks, and Makayla shrugs. Has he also forgotten that Wells was the one to kill the panther? You know, the one person who actually was able to defeat the panther?

ย  ย  ย  "What about Wells?".

ย  ย  ย  "What about him?" The man retorts, which makes Makayla roll her eyes. Is he really that dense? She stares at him for a minute before deciding to say something. "He killed the panther, dumbass".

ย  ย  ย  She doesn't know why she called him dumbass, and honestly regrets it. But she's getting antsy, and she's tired, and she really wants some water, and she could really go for a good night's rest in a fluffy mattress. "I think his morals made him do that. You, on the other hand, didn't have to try and save me. You don't even really seem to like me, anyway โ€”".

ย  ย  ย  She interrupts him. "Not exactly. And, I'm supposed to be taking a break from being a personal assistant, and you're interrupting that". He stares at her for a moment, before finally getting to his point.

ย  ย  ย  "So you don't want to go hunting? Or at least learn how to use a knife?" He questions, and all Makayla does is stare. Her? With a knife? What good would that do? She's perfectly fine with being a personal assistant, because at least that guarantees her safety, compared to something else reckless she could be doing outside of the dropship.

ย  ย  ย  But also, getting a break from being cooped up in the dropship does seem nice.

ย  ย  ย  "Sure" She says, which makes him smile. He tells her to follow him, and she reluctantly does so, because she's not even sure that she wants to be doing this. But maybe Jasper's screams of pain are getting to her, and she really needs that break. Maybe she just wants to seize the opportunity to do something good for the camp that's not being a personal assistant, because what good does that do? By doing that, she can't gather food, can't defend against Grounders, hell, she can't even do the basic chores that are needed around the camp!

ย  ย  ย  But, she has no fucking idea what she's getting herself into.

first chapter to reach 4k words!! this chapter also ended up being way different than what i planned, i genuinely just started going with the flow on this one. but in this chapter we got to see how makayla sort of feels about her role in the camp, and also sets up the next one/two chapters depending on how much i write. also, we got another mellamy interaction!! i feel like i'm not writing bellamy's character properly, but i think the whole savior shit is tying it together.
