Β Β Β Β Β π πππ, one hell of a rescue party
Β Β Β πππππππ ππππππ πππππππ ππ πππππππ πππππππ π π πππππ,Β without a care in the world about her surroundings. She always imagined that she would come across a forest and would run through it, feeling the breeze on her face as she ran. She always imagined that she would feel at peace, and she wouldn't be running from anything. She'd be running on her own accord, and it would be out of joy.Β
Β Β Β But she's slowly learning that almost everything she imagined about Earth isn't true. And now, she's running because she's being chased. Or maybe she's not, and she's just scared that she might be, just like the rest of their group is. She wishes she could go back for Jasper, but it's too dangerous. Who knows if she would be speared if she tried to retrieve him, and by the looks of it, he was dead the moment the spear hit him.Β
Β Β Β She is running next to Monty, who looks like he's about to cry. She doesn't blame himΒ β she would be crying if Sam was in Jasper's place. Makayla feels so much guilt about the situation, because she feels as if she should've known that someone was watching them. She thinks that she should've told the group that crossing the river wouldn't be safe, and that she feels like they're being watched.
Β Β Β Or would they have brushed her concern off and done it anyway?
Β Β Β She stumbles over something on the ground, but is able to catch herself. Monty, not so much. His body goes crashing onto the ground, landing right in front of a pile of bones. The rest of the group catches up to them, Octavia immediately helping Monty up off the ground. "What are they?" Finn questions as the rest of the group crowds around them.Β
Β Β Β "Who are they?" Clarke adds as she picks up a deformed skull that looks like it was an early human's. But those were from millions of years ago, so how are they here? Shouldn't the radiation have destroyed them ninety seven years ago?
Β Β Β Octavia and Quinn share a look before a scream rattles through the forest. Clarke drops the skull, and immediately takes off running towards the source of the scream. Makayla is quick to follow, because the scream tells her that Jasper's still alive. She still feels guilty, especially for not pointing out what she noticed, and she hopes Jasper will be okay.
Β Β Β They rush back, retracing their steps through the woods until they reach the river they left Jasper at. And the sight they see terrifies Makayla, her blood running cold.
Β Β Β Jasper's not there.
Β Β Β She picks at the skin by her nail, leaving a small open wound on her finger. She hears Monty ask where Jasper went, and all they can say is that the others, whoever they are, took him. Again, she feels guilty. She feels like this is her fault. The guilt is stuck in her brain, causing tears to slowly well up in her eyes as she stands there.
Β Β Β They start making their way back to the camp, in full silence. Makayla's hanging back this time, trying to keep herself from crying. This is not how she wants to run through a forestΒ β tired, scared, and upset. She wants to be happy while she runs through an environment like this, but that's not what Earth is.Β
Β Β Β Earth is so much worse.
Β Β Β As they near the entrance to the camp, they can hear commotion. Makayla can't make out any of the voices, but she can hear yells of encouragement, and it also sounds like some people are chanting 'Fight!' over and over again. She stops herself from rolling her eyes, since it's obviously not the time to do so. There's a fight going on, someone she just met is probably close to dying, and she feels like shit.
Β Β Β Clarke rushes ahead of them and yells at the person to let go of the other, and it turns out to be Wells. Makayla remembers WellsΒ β of course she does. Everyone knows Wells. She's talked to him beforeΒ β their conversations always used to be short, but he always liked hearing about her dreams about Earth. He always agreed with her, wanting to go to Earth and live in peace, but that was the extent of their relationship on the Ark.Β
Β Β Β Wells never seemed like the type to fight someone. But the ground's changing people, and it looks like it's only for the worse.
Β Β Β As she enters the view, she watches Bellamy take Octavia in his arms. He's quick to ask her if she's okay, since she's limping from her injury. Quinn follows her, no matter what. Their practically attached at the hip, but given the fact that they were cell mates, it's not surprising. "Where's the food?" Bellamy questions, cutting straight to the point after checking if his sister's okay.
Β Β Β Finn's the one that answers him. "We didn't make it to Mount Weather" He breathes out, and Makayla nods along. Sam's reached her side now and can see how she seems worked up, so he puts a comforting hand on her shoulder as the others converse.
Β Β Β Bellamy looks at them as if they're aliens. "What the hell happened out there then?". Clarke is quick to explain that they were attacked, only to get questioned by Wells on what attacked them. "Not what. Who.Β It turns out, when the last man from the ground died on the Ark, he wasn't the last Grounder".
Β Β Β Makayla almost laughs at the name. Grounder. It was something her parents used to throw around back when she was young, saying she was an aspiring Grounder, wanting to live her life on Earth.
Β Β Β But her parents' version of a Grounder wasn't dangerous, it wasn't harmful. Their version just wanted peace, and still does.
Β Β Β "It's true. Everything we thought we knew about the ground is wrong. There are people here, survivors. The good news is, that means we can survive. Radiation won't kill us" Clarke explains, and Makayla nods along. She doesn't really know what she's supposed to tell people, since she's still processing it herself. And she's still stopping herself from bursting into tears right in front of everyone.
Β Β Β "Yeah, the bad news is the Grounders will" Finn adds, and Makayla swears she can see Bellamy roll his eyes. It's like he thinks they're made of titanium or something, but there's no way they're surviving an attack from the Grounders. Jasper's probably barely alive. She can hear Wells question where Jasper is, and Makayla almost bursts into tears right then and there. She bites her lip and feels Sam grip her hand, holding it to comfort her.
Β Β Β Makayla scratches at her wrist as Clarke questions where Wells' wristband is. He gestures to Murphy and Bellamy, who are standing with sick smirks on their faces as they stare back. "Twenty four and counting" Murphy explains, and Makayla has to hold herself back from going up to Murphy and slapping him.
Β Β Β "You idiots. Life support on the Ark is failing! That's why they brought us down here. They need to know the ground is survivable again, and we need their help against whoever is out there. If you take off your wristbands, you're not just killing them. You're killing us!" Clarke exclaims, and Makayla can practically see the waves of fury coming off of her. She's mad too; but she doesn't hate the Ark that much to the point where she'd condemn them to certain death. It's just the Council, but she can't do a lot about that.Β
Β Β Β Bellamy rolls his eyes. "We're stronger than you think. Don't listen to her. She's one of the privileged" She can hear Sam scoff at his words, annoyed that he's saying these things just because she's from Alpha Station. "If they come down, she'll have it good. How many of you can say the same? We can take care of ourselves. That wristband on your arm? It makes you a prisoner. We are not prisoners anymore! They say they'll forgive your crimes. I say you're not criminals! You're fighters, survivors! The Grounders should worry about us!".
Β Β Β A chorus of people start agreeing with Bellamy, and Makayla scoffs. She accidentally makes eye contact with Bellamy, and is quick to look away. Because why would she entertain an asshole like that? She knows damn well that she wants paradise, not whatever the fuck is waiting for them beyond the grounds of the camp. All she knows now is that she wants to help Quinn treat her wound, and then go after Jasper.Β
Β Β Β Because she'll die trying to make this right.
βββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
Β Β Β ππ πππ'π ππππ ππ π
πππ πππππΒ β she's right by Octavia, but that's not surprising. Makayla is almost itching to make sure Quinn's alright, hoping that the wound isn't nearing an infection. Quinn's running her fingers over the scratch mark, wincing at the touch. It's obvious that she hasn't felt something like that before and doesn't really know how to nurse it back to health.
Β Β Β "Do you mind if I help you bandage it?" Makayla questions, holding up a spare piece of cloth she found lying around the drop ship. She also managed to find a bucket of what seems like water, and a rag after a little bit of searching. The Ark truly has left them with nothing to use or work with, but it's understandable. They didn't (and still don't) know that the ground is survivable. Why waste the supplies?
Β Β Β Quinn looks up at the girl from her spot in the ground, and then over at Octavia. "Is there a bandage for Octavia too?" She questions, worried about her friend. Makayla shakes her head sadly as she bends down, squatting right by Quinn's arm. "This was all I could find in the dropship. We truly have no supplies" She looks over at Octavia "I can try to find something for you in a bit?".
Β Β Β Octavia nods her head as Makayla dumps the rag into the water. It feels nice to have the water on her skin, especially when she's not in danger. She almost smiles, but she's still concerned for Quinn. It would be wrong to smile at this time, given the circumstance.Β
Β Β Β "Why are you helping me?" Quinn suddenly questions, which makes Makayla snap her head up from the wound almost immediately. "That's what friends are forΒ β and besides, you looked like you didn't know what you were doing a couple seconds ago". She can see Quinn's expression change from one that's uneasy to one that's surprised. She's almost taken aback by the sudden change, thinking she said something wrong until she sees a smile creep onto Quinn's face.
Β Β Β "We're friends?" She questions, and Makayla scoffs. "What else would we be?".
Β Β Β Quinn's smile grows bigger, only for it to fall when Bellamy comes up to his sister, makeshift bandage in hand. The two girls stay silent as Bellamy converses with his sister, but also consistently looking over at the two.
Β Β Β "What the hell was it?" He asks, wrapping the bandage around his sister's wound. Makayla pretends to not notice anything, and dabs the rag onto Quinn's wounds, making her wince in pain. She mumbles a quiet 'Sorry' before taking the bandage and wrapping it around the wound. "I don't know, the others said it looked like a giant snake" Octavia tells her brother, and Quinn nods.
Β Β Β "It got us both. It had like, claws, or some shit" The Devons girl explains, but Bellamy ignores her. Makayla wants to slap him upside the head for being a dickhead, but she fights the urge and continues securing the bandage around the girl's wound.
Β Β Β He turns his attention back to his sister. "You could have been killed". Octavia goes to respond, but Clarke interrupts her. "She would have been if Jasper didn't jump in to pull her out" The Griffin girl looks over at Makayla, taking notice of how she's being extra careful as she secures the makeshift bandage. "And Quinn too if Makayla didn't jump in to get her".
Β Β Β Makayla offers the girl a small smile while Octavia moves to stand up. "You guys leaving? I'm coming too" She says, and Quinn nods. "Me too".
Β Β Β Clarke shakes her head at the two girls, a serious look on her face. "Quinn, we can't risk you getting injured again especially since it looked like it was starting to get infected. And Octavia, your leg will just slow us down". Makayla turns and faces the girl, seeing Wells standing right behind her. She gives him a small smile, which he returns. The girl turns her attention back to Clarke, who's speaking to Bellamy. "I'm here for you".
Β Β Β Wells immediately starts questioning her decision to invite Bellamy on the mission. Makayla nods along, fully knowing that Bellamy probably isn't the best option to bring with them to go get Jasper. He seems like the type of person to toss people overboard who are sinking the boat instead of trying to save everyone. She knows for sure that bringing him on the trip probably isn't the best idea.
Β Β Β Clarke ignores Wells. "I hear you have a gun" She states, and he lifts up his shirt in response to show the gun tucked into his pants. Clarke nods, saying "Good. Follow me". She thinks she hears the man scoff at the thought before he questions why he would ever do that.
Β Β Β "Because you want them to follow you, and right now, they're thinking only one of us is scared" Clarke says, a slight smirk plastered onto her face. The two start leaving, making it about ten feet before Makayla rushes up to Clarke. "Can I come?" She asks, but not wanting to hear 'No' as an answer.Β
Β Β Β Clarke nods before walking off. She's obviously in a rush to go get Jasper, and Makayla doesn't blame her. She's been itching to go save him this entire time. She takes a piece of her hair in her hands, twisting it around her finger as she makes eye contact with Sam. She strays from the group, walking up to him with a small smile. "We're going to get Jasper. Want to come with us?" She says, gesturing to the group that's still on the move.
Β Β Β Sam shakes his head. "Monty asked if I can help him see if the wristbands could be used to contact the Ark. I'm going to help him, sorry". Makayla can see that he's excited to get working with his mechanical skills again, so she pats his shoulder and smiles. "Don't apologize, Sammy. Do what you do best!".
Β Β Β Sam pulls her into a hug. "Be careful. Murphy was charged for arson, he set like a guard's room on fire or some shit. I don't know what Bellamy's problem is, but I'd be careful of him too. I don't want to see them carrying back your dead body". Makayla nods at his statement, taking in the information that was just told to her before looking over at the group that's leaving without her.
Β Β Β Makayla gives Sam a salute before running up to Clarke, giving her a small smile as they continue down the path.
Β Β Β Behind the two girls and Wells, Bellamy stares at the blonde girl who just joined them. He already told Murphy that the plan is to take Clarke's wristband, but he doesn't know how important the other blonde is to the Ark. He doesn't even know her name, which you would think would give him an answer.
Β Β Β But nonetheless, his greediness gets the best of him.
βββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
Β Β Β Β πππ ππππ ππ πππ πππππ πππ ππππ ππππππ ππ, at least for a walk that's meant to be a rescue mission. Makayla doesn't really know where they're going, but she assumes Clarke has a plan. She assumes that they're probably headed back to where Jasper had been attacked, but she really doesn't want to go back there. She keeps looking up at the trees, scanning for the shadows that she's now learned to be the Grounders.
Β Β Β Bellamy's voice interrupts her thoughts. "Hey, hold up. What's the rush? You don't survive a spear through the heart" He states as he waves the gun around, carelessly. Makayla eyes the man's hand, wanting to rip the gun out from his grasp but she figures he's stronger than her. And she doesn't want to accidentally shoot someone when they have virtually no supplies.
Β Β Β Wells tells him to put the gun down, and Murphy starts pressing him about it. Makayla rolls her eyes at the boy that she now knows to be an arsonist, and she's not surprised. He seems like someone to do something like that, but she doesn't want to say anything that might make him want to set her on fire.
Β Β Β "Jasper screamed when they moved him. If the spear struck his heart, he'd have died instantly. It doesn't mean we have time to waste" Clarke snaps back at the two, and moving to go back on her walk but Bellamy grabs onto her arm. Makayla almost wants to step in, but again, she's warry of the two. How the fuck is Bellamy even here?
Β Β Β Bellamy stares her down before looking down at her wristband. "As soon as you take this wristband off, we can go" He states, looking Clarke dead in the eye. Clarke yanks her hand away before opening her mouth to speak to him. "The only way the Ark is gonna think I'm dead is if I'm dead. Got it?" She questions, only to get a scoff from the man.
Β Β Β "That doesn't mean Pyro over here won't" Murphy cuts in, looking over at Makayla. She freezes, because she never expected to be called 'Pyro'. She knows why he called her that and will probably call her that in the future, but she doesn't want to press on the topic. The group stares at them before Murphy lunges for her arm, but she yanks her hand away just in time.
Β Β Β "Don't be a hypocrite, Murphy" She says as he stumbles back up into a standing position. He scoffs at that. "And I don't like the idea of the council coming down, but I also don't want to end up with a spear through my chest. So, sorry if I don't want to die" She adds, staring directly at Bellamy as she finishes her statement. She originally didn't want to say anything at them, afraid her temper may get the best of her because she finds the two to be insufferable.Β
Β Β Β A rustle comes from the trees as Bellamy opens his mouth to say something. Makayla turns her head so she's facing the area, only to see Finn walk out of the trees, making her almost roll her eyes. "You call this a rescue party? Got to split up, cover more ground" He announces, specifically looking over at Murphy and Bellamy. "Clarke, come with me".
Β Β Β Makayla wants to strangle Finn for that. Leaving her with the two boys and Wells? She doesn't mind Wells, frankly she finds him to be quite nice, but the other two? Murphy's a loose cannon and Bellamy's a selfish dick, and Makayla feels like her temper is hanging on by a few threads at this point.Β
Β Β Β Maybe she should've stayed back with Quinn.
Β Β Β Makayla rolls her eyes and turns away from them, and starts walking ahead. She tries to zone out and mindlessly follow the pair in front of her, but a certain someone's loud voice takes her out of her thoughts. "Guess we got more in common than meets the eye, huh?" Bellamy says, but Makayla doesn't care to figure out who that's directed to.
Β Β Β "We have nothing in common" Wells spits back, annoyed at Bellamy's words. Makayla doesn't blame himΒ β Bellamy has been nothing but a dick to everyone, except maybe his sister. She nods along with Wells' words, hoping her movements aren't noticed by the rest of the group.
Β Β Β "No?" Bellamy questions, then lets out a small laugh. "Both came down here to protect someone we love. Your secret's safe with me. 'course, for you it's worse. With Finn around, Clarke doesn't even see you. It's like you're not even here".
Β Β Β She figures that Bellamy's just saying this to get under Wells' skin. It's kind of been obvious that the boy has feelings for Clarke, given the way he follows her around like a lost puppy. She finds herself feeling bad for the Jaha boy, because watching someone you care about fall for someone else must suck. She doesn't know how to relate to that, but she's read a shit ton of books, so she figures her knowledge of those types of things isn't that bad.
Β Β Β She feels a presence on her right side, and looks to find Murphy walking next to her. She rolls her eyes. "How's Earth treating you, Pyro?" He questions, a sloppy smirk plastered on his face. She lets out a scoff, already sick of being called 'Pyro'. "It was better before you decided to talk to me. Now fuck off" She spits out, finding herself losing one of the threads that was holding her temper together.
Β Β Β She hears Murphy let out a small laugh as she starts walking ahead of them, tired of hearing them talk. She really wishes Sam was here to talk to her.
Β Β Β But she knows she has to talk to some of the others to survive.
