chapter 4

dinner

walking in front of the two you could hear the two having some sort of idle conversation, you heard both talking about your siblings. how lo'ak found tsireya attractive, and how ao'nung looked like he was smacked by a fish. the comments made about your siblings made you snicker mentally, not wanting them to know how assuming they were to you.

when the three of you make it back into the village, you motion them to follow you away from where the houses were and toward the communal dining area. while you weren't the best at cooking, you had many friends that were, and you were going to dump the boys on them so they can help prepare for dinner while you clean some bones from the fish.

they follow you and you look back at them, confusion flashing on their faces at the new area.

"what is this?" neteyam asks, gesturing to the set up in front of you. there were a few na'vi that were already there, making sure that the fish that was not eaten the day before had dried properly.

you remember not seeing them when they first got here at the communal dining, thinking that the whole family went to rest instead of eating with the group.

"this is where we eat dinner. we build community like this," you say, walking toward the na'vi who were there. you motion neteyam toward you, reaching out for the basket full of fish, and taking it from his hands to drop off.

"so, what are we doing here?" lo'ak asks, dragging out the 'so' in his sentence.

"you learn to cook and be useful," you say, sitting down. you grab a fish and a knife and sit on one of the logs, picking out the bones with the tip of the knife to create filets for the cooks to choose what to do with.

"i don't want to cook..." lo'ak says trailing off, neteyam taps his brother's shoulders, shaking his head.

"c'mon little bro, we need to help out," neteyam says, sitting beside you. he took out a knife that you didn't realize he had and took a fish from the basket like you. from the corner of your eyes, you could see neteyam examine how you removed the bones with precision and attempt to copy you.

lo'ak rolls his eyes and sat down across from you two, also watching how you did your job.

after you had deboned a moderate amount of fish, you bring them to the cooks, watching them choose to smoke the fish for the day. neteyam walks up from behind you with a smile, happy with the small stack of fish he had deboned himself. you nod at neteyam's efforts.

"you two help them cook, i have plans," you say nonchalantly, walking away. you had done what you had planned to do and left the two forest boys with the cooks. you could feel the questioning gazes staple into your back, but you didn't look back at them. you continued to walk away.

"what's her problem," lo'ak says quietly but loud enough for you to hear.

"don't say that, she's giving up stuff to do," you hear neteyam say with a small smack. a little 'ow' could be heard from lo'ak and you assumed they went back to work and helped out with the dinner.

you would see them later anyway during actual dinner, you didn't have to be around them for them to help out.

walking along the beach, you looked for materials to create more weapons with. creating weapons had been your main hobby whenever your father hadn't assigned you to do anything. it had been a bit since you had more than half a day to enjoy yourself, so you had gone to sit on the rocks to chip at a stronger rock you had found for a spear and some driftwood that was around.

hitting your main rocks against the other rocks, you didn't realize the small forest na'vi walking up toward you, watching your actions.

it seemed like the forest people liked to watch you do your work.

"hi," you hear a small voice say. your head darts up to see the youngest sully looking at you. your eyes look around the area, making sure she was talking to you and not anyone else.

"i'm tuktirey!" she says happily. not knowing what to do, you wave at the younger girl.

she sits crisscrossed in front of her, head tilting at your actions, "what are you doing?"

"i'm... making a spear," you say, unsure if you should talk about this with a child. sure, you had a soft spot for the younger people in your clan but you weren't going to explicitly tell them about a weapon.

"my mom uses a bow from her dad," tuktirey says out of the blue. you didn't know what to say to her or what to do with her, so you motion to the driftwood in front of you.

"you want to help?" you ask.

"sure! my sister says i'm a good helper," tuktirey says as she grabs the branch and brings it closer to you.

whoever was tuk's sister was very correct about tuk being a good helper. first off, she told you to call her tuk saying something only her grandma only called her tuktirey. tuk is very observant and patient, asking things to further her understanding about what you were doing.

"so why are you chipping you rock against the other rocks?"

"so it can be sharp, easier to kill with."

"how do you connect it with the wood then?"

"with twine, i tie it strong so it doesn't fall," you say to her, showing the twine you had beside you.

"you're cool like my mom," tuk says, with her eyes wide in amazement.

"i'm sure your mother is cooler than me," you say, looking at tuk with a small smile. the younger girl reminded you of tsireya somehow. maybe it was simply the fact that tuk was younger than you or because both tuk and tsireya shared the same amazement for the world around you.

"do you like the ocean?" you ask tuk.

"it's big... and scary, i can't hold my breath like the older kids yet," she says with a pout.

"you'll learn fast. if you are able to keep up with how i teach you, tsireya and ao'nung will teach you perfectly," you say with a bit of praise toward your siblings knowing their capabilities.

"i like tsireya, but i don't like ao'nung," you weren't surprised at her words. between the two, tsireya was the more open one, while ao'nung was much more closed off like you. you were only coming to accept the forest people because of how often they ended up crossing your path.

"ao'nung is hard to get along with, he'll come around," you say, finishing up the spear. this spear would probably go to one of the younger metkayina who were starting their rite to become an adult.

"come, it's time for dinner," holding out a hand for tuk to hold, she takes your hand in hers, your other hand occupied with the spear you had just made.

walking her over to the communal dining area, you see other dark blue na'vi, directing tuk over to the group that seemed to make up toruk makto, neteyam, lo'ak, neytiri, and their other daughter who you did not know the name of. you gave tuk a small nod, before walking away, unable to hear neteyam calling for you.

you sit with your father and mother, examining the options for dinner. you saw dried or smoked fish were your choices, you decide on the dried fish and a small basket of fruit that was laid out. both tsireya and ao'nung were not there when you arrived, but by the time you had got there tsireya and ao'nung were sitting with your parents.

tsireya perked up when she saw you, grabbing her food in one hand and the other went to hold on to your arm to prevent you from sitting down, "(y/n)! will you sit with the sullys with me? ao'nung is being a prick and doesn't want to."

you look between your sister and brother with a sigh, you shake your head a bit, not wanting to have to think about seating arrangements at the moment. but because your sister asked, you didn't want to leave her to eat with others on her own, "fine."

with a smile and a raspberry at ao'nung, tsireya dragged you over to where the sully family sat. you send a nod as a greeting toward jake and neytiri, not wanting to intrude on the family time but dinner was the time to connect with others.

tsireya sat herself next to lo'ak, unsurprising to you, and you found yourself next to neteyam and tuk. tuk sent you a smile, excited that you were joining her for another activity, neteyam on the other hand turned to face you.

"thank you for hanging out with tuk, she's a bit of a handful," neteyam says with a smile, grateful that you had taken some of your time to take care of his younger sister. you send him a shrug.

"tuk is the least handful out of all of you so far," you say quietly, shoving some food into your mouth while tuk shows a toothy smile to neteyam.

"she likes me more than you!" tuk teases.

"tuk- it's not about that, i'm thanking her for hanging out with you" neteyam says with a shake of his head.

"still, she likes me more," tuk says, dragging out the more as if it was some moment of victory that you hung out with her, despite you having spent the most time with neteyam so far.

"ah, whatever. eat your food," neteyam says, reaching in front of you to gently push on tuk's head. she lets out a small 'ah' and a 'hmph' before continuing to eat her fish.

you had been quiet the whole exchange, unsure what you could even say in the first place. you were in the middle of two siblings bantering and you didn't want to get in the way of that.

"so what's around your neck," you turn your head to see that neteyam was facing you, assuming he was the one who asked you a question.

"akula tooth."

"what's an akula?"

"you are clueless, like a baby."

"and i just got here, wondering what is around your neck," neteyam says with his hands up.

"you'll see one when you go hunting outside the reef," you say.

"i get to hunt outside the reef?"

"if you want to be a hunter for the metkayina, yes. your first successful hunt will be marked with the teeth of the akula," you say, motioning to your necklace that held the teeth of three different akula. while two of the teeth had been from your own hunt, one had been from ao'nung's first hunt as you were proud of his achievement.

"do you want to hear about my necklace?" neteyam asks, his finger pointing to his neck. before he can say anything, tuk pops back into the conversation.

"me and kiri made it for him!" tuk says loudly. your eyebrows crease at the unfamiliar name, but you assumed that it was the sibling you haven't met yet.

"his necklace is made very well, good job tuk," you say, your attention solely on the younger girl. you haven't actually looked at neteyam's necklace but based on tuk's joy, it must've been a well crafted accessory.

dinner wrapped up shortly after that, many na'vi were there to clean up any mess that was left behind, big pieces of uncooked fish being left out to dry out for the night. you had grabbed some leftovers and placed the leftovers in a bastker, walking over to where the tsurak would usually be kept, leaving the others to feed ka'li and the other tsuraks.

hearing footsteps from the sand, you looked over your shoulder. neteyam was there again.

"what are you up to? can i help?" you were starting to think that him asking for help was a guise to hang out with you. you weren't sure if you liked it or not.

"feeding the tsurak," you say.

"i'll join you," he says, running to catch up to you and walk by your side.

you wanted to ask why he was somehow always around you, asking to help you. so you did.

"why are you asking me if i need help? i am capable on my own."

"well, we're close in age, right? and my dad wants me to be useful and you seem like the easiest to talk to," he explains. you take in his words carefully, being the easiest to talk to wasn't something that was used to describe you often because you barely talked as is. but you accepted his words.

when you approach the waters the tsurak were swimming in, you grabbed a couple pieces of fish and threw it in, offering the basket to neteyam so he would do the same as you. you waited for ka'li to show up and to feed her by your hand, putting the basket down to kneel in the water and pat the tsurak's head.

"are you sure she's not your tsurak? you're treating her better than the others," neteyam says, looking at you with a questioning look.

you weren't about to tell him that you named your tsurak because of him. instead you shrugged, "she just needs the most care."

and you said nothing more.
