I gently balled my hand into a fist as I knocked onto the cabin door. I anxiously took a step back as my gaze fell to the porch's flooring. I gently shook my hands before stuffing them into my hoodie pockets - I'd opted to dress in clothes I knew to be mine - my grey (blue hooded) hoodie and black, baggy jeans. I was wearing my turtleneck too, and worn black and white converse. My clothing.
The door opened with a slight creek, revealing a short ravenette peering through the gap. Their cautious eyes quickly lit up seeing it was me - the door almost flinging open. "Toby!" Nina exclaimed as they threw their arms around me, "How are you? You haven't had anymore trouble with that weird TV crap, have you?" They asked, pulling away with a worried expression.
I chuckled faintly, gently patting their back when they'd hugged me. "Nah, I'm - I'm fine. No TV troubles." I replied, shrugging. "I was actually gonna ask you if I could hang out with you and Helen for a bit." I mumbled, offering them an awkward and hopeful smile.
Their concerned expression only grew; their thin brow knitted together as their big hues squinted slightly. "Are you and Cody having issues?" They hesitantly asked, tilting their head to the side. How did they know?
I averted my gaze, "Uh, yeah, I guess." I mumbled, though I let out a soft sigh looking back to them. "How'd you know?" I asked.
"I'm omniscient." They stated, a deadpan expression on their face - their bold statement followed by silence and a sincere stare into my eyes.
I felt my brow furrow as I opened my mouth to speak, only to be cut off with a giggle - the enby's facade fading as they allowed a playful smile to fill their features. "I'm joking, Toby." Nina laughed.
I slowly nodded, allowing my expression to ease as a small smile began to replace my confused look. "Oh, okay-" I replied.
"You just look really sad, so I guessed." They stated, tilting their head to the side with a small pout - as if feeling a sort of pity for me. I admired their bluntness, but that felt a little.. too blunt.
"Is it that obvious?" I mumbled, averting my gaze to the porch flooring below us.
"Aw, Toby - don't be upset about it!" Nina stated; their voice almost baby-ing, as if trying to be reassuring of comforting. "I'm just good at reading people."
They were probably lying. But, it was a white lie, couldn't get too pissed about that. Plus, they were just trying to be nice.
"What did you wanna do?" Nina asked, tilting their head to the side as they looked up at me with curiousity.
I shrugged slightly, glancing to the side before looking to them. I raised my eyebrows - feeling rather awkward at the idea of asking to third wheel. "Well what were you two going to do?" I asked hesitantly.
Nina pulled an awkward expression, "Well we were going to cuddle - and that isn't really an activity for three.." They mumbled, a slightly grimace mixed with an apologetic expression.
"Oh.." I mumbled, my eyes falling the wooden floorboards. I knew this was a bad idea. But I couldn't hang out with Tim and Brian, Cody would have probably gone up to them and asked where I was. "I can go-" I began, only to be cut off by the abrupt shaking of their head.
"Helen, Baby!" They called out, now facing inside the cabin - causing my eyes to widen.
"Shit, no, Nina-"
"I'm going to hang out with Toby!"
I grimaced, "Fuck - Nina, stop-"
A familiar man popped his head around the corner looking from me to Nina - his shaggy, black hair following suit. He merely peered at me with icy blue hues before shrugging. "Stay safe." He mumbled, before once again disappearing.
I sighed softly as they stepped back out onto the porch and closed the cabin door behind them. "You didn't need to do that, if you had plans with him then I could've done something else." I rambled, watching them only cheerfully shake their head.
"Nope! I don't always get to hang out with friends - Helen wants me too, with how Jeff used to be." They explained with a small shrug. Though, their demeanour quickly perked up again, "So, what did you wanna do?"
I paused. Well, maybe this could be a good experience for both of us? I get a break from the usual crowd, and Nina could get some pent up shit off of their chest. "Well, a good way to make friends is to talk. We could just.. I don't know, what do normal people do?" I mumbled.
They out a playful gasp, "We aren't normal?!" They exclaimed, causing me to snort.
"Look at us, Nina - I know you're just joking, but, when was the last time we looked normal, at least?" I retorted, beginning to stroll off of the porch, to which they copied.
Nina shrugged, "I never did - scene kid." They replied, though did look up to me with a small head tilt, "Though I was thinking about changing it up a bit." They added - a soft yet neutral expression on their face. Wow, I must've been a downer.
"What were you thinking? Punk?" I teased with a small chuckle, attempting to lighten the mood.
They shrugged, a small, exasperated laugh just escaping their lips. "I mean, why not? I think I could pull off punk." Nina replied, their words starting off sheepish but grew with confidence, "I mean, I was really hoping to cut my hair - Jeff said I'd always look too boyish whenever I'd cut it, and that he was - I won't repeat it, but he just tried reminding me that he's straight." They sighed - clearly peeved at the idea that they'd put up with that bullshit for so long.
They looked a bit soft for punk. They liked their baggy and colourful clothes. With the sequin bow and the striped socks - purple converse with rainbow laces. Plus the pleated skirt - they looked... Not punkish.
"Well, what haircut were you thinking? Anything in mind, or would you want me to try and do something punkish?" I suggested, "I cut my hair."
They let out a small giggle, "Your hair isn't exactly punk, it's just messy, Toby." Nina retorted, tilting their head to the side - their bangs and ponytail mimicking said movements.
"Well, you only live once." I shrugged, pulling a small face - like my lips had tugged to the side, but not necessarily being a smile.
They seemed to pause, looking forward. "...Sure."
