Cody had somehow managed to stop things from blowing up; my "sister" had seemed too stunned to fight against Cody using the rope, that I'd found in the boot, to tie her to one of the back seats of the car (she probably recognised him or something), he'd stopped me from lashing out - leading me to the passenger seat, and reluctantly got Jeff back (placing him next to the woman). However, the man was currently out of the car - collecting the water bottle that our hostage had claimed to have had in her own vehicle.
"You're Roger's sista, eh?" Jeff asked, to which I think she nodded (due to the man's continuation). "I don' see the resemblunce." He muttered hoarsely, which was followed by a small cackle.
"So, uh, what's your name?" I hesitantly began, looking back to her, despite the fact I was practically blind. If this woman was my sister, I wanted to at least know her name, though something was unsettling about her. I didn't trust her and she honestly didn't feel familiar. However, when I'd been reunited with Cody I felt a sense of safety or reliability. Admittedly, he didn't mace me and I had a gun pointed at him, but I had the upper hand with her as well.
There was a momentary silence, before she finally answered. "My name's Lyra." She spoke with a certain sadness, or disappointment. "Toby, what do you remember?" Lyra had hesitantly asked.
I paused, weighing over what I actually remembered versus what Cody had told me of. It was upsetting that I knew more from Cody than my actual brain. "Well, my birthday is April twenty-eighth, I was born in 1996 - so I'm nineteen. I can speak German and English. I tried learning Spanish and gave up.. and I'm a dude.." I trailed off, furrowing my brow in thought as I used my hands to articulate my words - despite not being able to see it, myself (using my fingers to count what I could in fact remember for myself), "I like Star Wars - and I think my favourite was R2, comic books and poetry - specifically John Keats - though I don't remember shit about any of them anymore." I sighed, "Uh - I had a dog, an alsatian, as a kid, but I don't remember it too much. Um - I remember spending time with Cody. Mostly at school. And one time talking about going into the forest - and one time with this girl. Fuck, I can't remember what she looked like - her face is too fucking blurry." I rambled, slamming my eyes closed with a frustrated expression - resting my temple against my hands. "I think she was in a band - like, she played an instrument in a group-"
"Marching band?" Lyra piped in, her voice still soft but more inquisitive, now.
"Yeah, yeah, I think so-" I mumbled, "Because of the flute and the um, yeah the drums, too-"
"That was Bronwyn." She explained, beginning to speak again, but was abruptly cut off.
"'m jus' shock'd mutt gott'a girl." Jeff interrupted, a laugh underlying his voice. I glanced back to the black, white and grey blur - attempting to send the man a glare, despite the fact I knew he couldn't see it.
He wasn't helping. When did he, though? I was stressed enough as it is - I had a horrid taste in my mouth, I couldn't really see and this woman is related to me. It always unnerved me when someone knew me better than I knew myself. The only reason I trusted Cody was because he seemed to be right. I had memories, that he'd caused to be resurfaced, plus he'd proven to me that he cared.
Jeff began to lean towards my seat, tossing an arm around me as his chest pressed against the back of the seat - his free arm beginning to flail around in front of the driver's seat. In retaliation, I looked to where he was grabbing, to no avail - so only grumbling instead.
"What is he grabbing?" Lyra asked - a concerned and worried tone to her voice. It was painfully obviously that she was scared of him, which was understandable. He was terrifying to look at, especially the first few times someone saw him. Unfortunately, I'd slowly become accustomed to it, much like a lot of the killers.
"Justa snack." Jeff huffed, his hand continuing to smack against the dashboard, until he finally grabbed something - quickly retreating with the faint sound of a zipper. This seemed to put Lyra at some ease as she hadn't argued with the man.
"That was Cody's-" I began, though seeing as how quietly I'd complained, I was interrupted by the sound of the passenger door opening, to which I quickly turned to look towards them. A familiar blur stood there, gently placing a hand against my shoulder.
"I got the water, okay? I'm just going to need you to keep your eyes open, and occasionally blink. It'll feel weird, but it'll help." Cody told me, softly - guiding my head to lean back against the headrest. After I'd hummed in acknowledgement and widened my eyes, water began to pour into my left eye - causing it to naturally wince closed, to which I forced open. It didn't last long - it stopped and was replaced by a soft material gently dabbing itself over it, making me blink. "Can you see?" He asked.
This was weird - I could see clearly through one eye, yet the other still looked blurred - and Cody must've been able to tell by my expression, as the man snorted quietly. "Don't worry Toby, I'm going to do the other eye, too - but is this one okay?" He questioned.
"Yeah - I mean, you're not completely blurry." I answered, which earnt another nod - the man beginning to lean over me slightly.
"Good - I'm gonna do the other eye now, Toby." He explained, causing me to close my 'fixed' eye, just in case the chemicals would fall back into it. Despite knowing what to expect, my eye naturally went to close again, at the feeling of the water - but I'd done my best to keep it open. I felt his hoodie sleeve gently dab against my eye, letting me blink again. "All done." He told me, rather cheerily.
I opened my eyes, offering the brunette a warm smile, to which he briefly returned, "Take your goggles next time."
"I didn't think of that, now, did I?" I teasingly retorted, with a small hum.
"'m still goin' blind!" Jeff snapped, growling at us, almost. This caused Cody to quickly slip away - making my eyebrows furrow in annoyance, momentarily glancing back to Jeff and, now, Cody too.
"I know - and the reason I did Toby's first, is because he isn't going to waste any water. I have a feeling you will." Cody retorted to the man, beginning to (a little bit harshly) tilt the ravenette's head back with his hand on his forehead. "Sit still, and don't close your eyes for fucks sake. It'll sting, but either way you're gonna be in pain."
Jeff only grunted in response, forcing his eyes open as Cody begun to pour the water - just as gently, admittedly, though Jeff's reaction was vastly different to mine. The man hissed as he hit his fists against the seat, causing Cody to grab Jeff's jaw to keep him still.
"I never suspected you'd be like this." Lyra hesitantly stated, her head turned to look towards the light-brown haired man - who'd in turn glanced up to her. "I mean, don't get me wrong, I was shocked when I saw Toby in the newspapers and when mom and Bronwyn had told me, but when you went missing-" She began, in a ramble, but only to be cut off by Cody.
"You never really got to know me. You only saw glances of me, Lyra. So you can't really make that judgement." Cody mumbled, not yet tilting the bottle back.
"Bronwyn was shocked, though." Lyra had fired back, her expression falling from concern and moreso into a slight frustration. "She's been worried sick. Losing Toby then you."
My eyes flickered to Cody, who seemed to have tensed, glaring at Lyra. "I don't want to talk about this." He answered, his dimpled cheeks sticking out slightly as he grimaced.
"I can't fuckin' breathe, here-" Jeff spluttered, which diverted Cody's attention to the man who was in fact trying to divert the water away from his mouth. Instead of apologising, Cody just moved the bottle over Jeff's other eye.
"I'm living with her, now, y'know? She's heartbroken. Toby showed signs - he started acting different. You didn't. You just kept distancing yourself, but you'd been distancing yourself for two years - so nobody suspected anything like this. I'd told her you were just getting into your work because of your falling out with Toby, and how you felt bad about not being able to properly say goodbye to him. Because we all thought he was dead - even if you won't admit it."
"Shut up." Cody snapped, pulling the water bottle away and averting his gaze to Jeff. "Use your hoodie to wipe your eyes." He instructed through a grumble.
"Wait, we had a falling out?" I asked, confused by what she meant - my eyes flickering from the blonde to the brunette. Cody hadn't mentioned one, before. His green hues landed on me - a worried, hurt look filling them.
He'd pulled away from Jeff, quickly looking away from me, "I don't want to talk about this. Not with her here." He muttered under his breath, slamming the car door, which caused Jeff to flinch as he dried off his eyes.
"Fuckin' arse." Jeff grumbled, leaning forward and tossing Cody's black satchel back onto the dashboard. Shit, that's what he took.
"Jeff - why did you take that?" I asked, my panic somewhat evident to my tone.
"'m not an idiot, I didn' take any of 'em, it was jus' a temporary measure in case blondie tried anythin'." The man rambled, glaring at me. Though, he did look to Lyra - his eyes narrowing to the best of their abilities. "I don't trust ya. Ya hot, but I don' trust ya." He hissed, which caused Lyra's face to contort into distaste.
"I don't trust you either - why did you think I maced you?" She retorted.
The driver's door opened, to which I immediately turned my head to - giving Cody an expecting look. I was waiting for an explaination, on all of this. I had a girlfriend that was never mentioned to me, I'd had a falling out with the one person I'd been relying on this whole time and honestly a lot more to unpack than I'd realised. He'd kept shit from me that was important and he was only addressing Lyra about it, really, when these were my memories.
"Why aren't you going to tell him whilst I'm here, Cody? I can back up what you're saying, surely, fill in the blanks since you two practically went none contact?" Lyra berated - I could practically hear her glare.
"Neva thought you two could argue, since you're both so far up each other's arses. Constantly doin' shit for each other." Jeff commented, which caused Cody toss the water bottle at Jeff - having purposefully left the cap off. Of course, this only pissed Jeff off, seeing as his lap and hoodie were now damp. "Dick."
"Shut the fuck up, this doesn't involve you." Cody snapped before turning back to Lyra, beginning to do his seat belt, "And you're really not fucking helping. The reason I won't tell him in front of you is because you're an impatient, nosey bitch and you always have been! You'd only interrupt and make it harder to explain, you haven't been the one trying to jog his memories! I have!"
Lyra scoffed, narrowing her eyes, "So refusing to tell him about that is helping him gain his memories back?" She retorted.
"It would be better for him to remember it on his own! I tried telling him about Bronwyn and it only overwhelmed him! Telling him about stuff he isn't meant to remember yet will only harm him more - so I've only been telling him small memories, happy ones. I let them trigger memories, and happier ones will give him a break from the shit ones it gives him!" Cody yelled through gritted teeth, gripping the steering wheel.
Lyra stayed silent, though she hesitantly piped up, "It?" She questioned, before continuing quietly, "And I always knew you were a shit influence for him."
"Fuck off, Lyra. I looked out for him a lot more than you're making out."
"Oh really? So getting him to tresspass properties to search for ghosts or to graffiti was looking out for him?" Lyra argued, "Because when you took it too far, I was the one that had to patch up his fucking injuries and wipe away his tears."
"You sound like Frank - fucking threatening me when I was twelve because I was such a bad influence."
"He told you that if Toby came back smelling of weed he'd stop you from hanging out with him since you stank of it."
This seemed to hit a nerve with Cody as he swung his head around to look at her - a look in his eyes that either showed pain or a sense of anger that was close to snapping, perhaps both. "I was twelve and I couldn't control when my mother smoked! If you think I could, do you really think that I would've allowed her fuel her fucking addiction?!" He practically snarled, turning back to face the front - the look of tears in his eyes, "And your stupid fucking police dog made it painfully obvious that I wasn't welcomed. Being tackled by an alsatian wasn't something I enjoyed."
The silence that followed clearly spoke volumes more than their argument had. Cody hadn't mentioned anything like this before - not about an argument or about his mother. And, at Lyra's lack of retaliation, I felt like he hadn't mentioned anything of the latter to me, beforehand.
I was upset at him - obviously - I was confused, and I wanted answers, answers he wasn't giving me. But, he was a reliable source - I'd remembered some of the things he'd told me. So, I trusted him when he'd insisted on telling me later, it was just a question of why he hadn't mentioned any of this sooner.
"I think y'all should put on some music." Jeff announced cheerfully, causing me to turn around and glare at him. "What? Ain't it a bit quiet?"
