𝐯𝐢. Humanizing the Cullens/twilight vampires in general
We all know that the Cullens wanted to blend in with the humans, but they made it nearly impossible to do exactly that. They don't interact with the students/humans, refuse to join school events, and don't have a good relationship with any of them because they lowkey hate all of them. In short, they have a superiority complex; look, okay, I get it; they are in their 80s and 200s but look physically young. But come on, they want to "blend in" with the humans but refuse to try to blend in with them? I know some really curious students with wild imaginations suspect them of something other than being human.
The Twilight vampires are beautiful, like angels; they were suspected of having plastic surgeries because of how good they look. But Smeyer should have done a better job creating her version of vampires in the media. It's so highlighted in the Twilight books that they want an everyday life in human society, but their skin is super duper, pale, and cold. They were all meant to be adopted kids, but they all have similar eye colors. That's way too obvious. I would not have believed them if they had said they were adopted, but they have the same color eyes as Carlisle and Esme. What, ahahah.
If I were in Twilight, I would have uncovered their secret at first glance. They were the stereotypical description of vampires, pale, the bags in their eyes looking as if they were restless, the bright topaz eyes (they all have it), the way they talked as if they were from a different time—yes, I know the reference. I'm just saying if they really want to blend in, they should have made the effort to do so. They dress fashionably well so that it doesn't even fit with the vibes of Forks, and it was said in the books that they wear neutral colors to blend in. It doesn't make sense considering that in the early 2000s, dark colors, bright colors, or loud patterned clothes with many accessories were the fashion trend. They should have dressed in what Bella Swan and Elena Gilbert were wearing, which was typical 2000s clothes.
I actually have beef with the way Smeyer wrote skin color because, in the books, it's practically non-existent. After all, the venom removes the melatonin in their skin and all of that bullshit. Did you know that she didn't want the actor to play Laurent in the movies because POC or skin color doesn't exist in Twilight because they are all meant to be pale white? It's just her racist side, guys. Don't worry. That's why we have fanfiction—we are going to ignore her.
So, how are we going to humanize the Cullens or Twilight vampires in your fan fiction? There are a lot of things to improve. Let me start off with that, and let's begin with their skin color.
Jasper grew up in Huston, Texas as a cowboy and in the military, but he's pale as fuck? No, make him have a golden tan skin. Emmett works on the railroad, but he's pale, too? Give him warm undertones like Rosalie, Alice, Edward, and Esme. I will only accept that the Carlisle would have an ivory skin tone with neutral undertones. You can give Rosalie a fair skin tone, but have you seen Nikki Reed recently? Her natural tan looks so good on her, but considering that Jasper and Rosalie are meant to be twins, giving her a tan would be a better idea.
Vegetarian vampires have worse eye bags because their diet doesn't fulfill them as much. That's why the vampires in the Volturi have a less worse one—you can altogether remove them; it doesn't really add much to anything, just their physical appearance. And the color of their eyes too, you can change that. You can maybe fit it better so that their eyes match their gifts?? For example, if Kate's gift is an electric shock, does she have electric blue eyes instead? Or just making them brighter than their usual human eye color. Since their sight is enhanced, so is the color of their eyes, from pale green to a much brighter green.
Or just make them TVD vampires, but the difference is how to kill them.
Because we want to humanize them. In reality, they're like those privileged, pompous, and elitist spoiled rich kids who got sent to a small town for discipline because they partied too hard or spent way too much allowance that daddy doctor, and mommy architect gave them. It would help if you made them adjust to their surroundings, their mannerisms, and how they approach people. Don't make them so detached from everyone around them and reality just because they are vampires; remember, they want to blend into human society, so make them do their part correctly and properly.
Make them talk to fellow students and have them have acquaintances. I know it will be weird for them to be in the retirement stages trying to keep up with students and their slang, but you need to make them do it because they want a normal human life, so make them have a normal human life. Make Edward join the debate team because I forgot if it's canon or not that he went to law school, make Emmett be the class goofball, make Rosalie be part of the cheerleading team that does charity work, make Alice be part of the student council because that would be so her and volunteers at the hospital or those who need help with their shops. They don't have to be attached to the humans they are acquainted with. Just make them more warm and welcoming so that everyone in Forks would think they are the perfect definition of a family instead of what they described in the books and movies as weird and creepy because they failed severely in blending in.
They have naturally alluring and magnetic charms, so make them use them to their advantage. If they are well-liked, fewer humans would suspect that there are vampires. Who would even think that Forks's kindest and nicest family is hiding a dark secret? No, they wouldn't think that because Carlisle donates a massive amount to the hospital, orphanage, and shelter for the elderly. How Esme designs houses at a low price, but she's doing it because of how much she liked Forks and the people in it, how Rosalie helps with charity and volunteers with Alice with causes that are important to them, or maybe you can make Edward tutor students who are failing. He'll have an excellent job at it because he can read their minds. He can properly do the right technique to make sure that they are improving, or how Emmett puts bullies in their place by scaring the shit out of them, or how Jasper works as a student assistant in the local library at Forks, makes a weekly history quiz bees or organizing a group of history nerds to talk about history and philosophy, and volunteers at the small museum at Forks to help to preserve stuff.
See? That's how their "blending in" should be in the first place. Then everyone would understand that they will be moving because the Cullen kids who went to Forks High School are going to Ivy League schools far from Forks or studying in another country. It would work more if they knew that the Cullen kids have so much potential in their future, so they know they won't be permanently staying in Forks but find their potential elsewhere, and you know what makes it better? They left a good mark on places that they resided in over the years as good people and pros. They didn't leave any traces of rumors that they were something else other than being human.
I didn't really get Smeyer's world-building; it lacked so much because she emphasized that the Cullens want a normal human life. The reality is that they won't have a normal human life; they go to high school at EVERY move, and the Cullens look so mature for their age as well; it would have been better if they switched to high school, college, to fresh graduates that are working. They could adjust their appearance, like their clothes and style, to fit the setting. It's so easy to cheat appearances, especially if they have the money to do so. Make them have braces or glasses or fake pimples to make them younger and their hairstyles much younger in high school, then adjust them to have their glow up and be more refined and mature when they go to college or work as fresh undergraduates.
If I were one of the Cullens, I wouldn't even go to university anymore, maybe once every three decades to keep up with the times and technology, but if I had Daddy Carlisle's money and decades/centuries worth of investments and money I would have traveled the world or settled someplace that would give me peace—if you're a century-year-old vampire, why are you still broke? Like, damn, make intelligent decisions.
But, alas, we all know why Smeyer made it a high school setting for Bella Swan. It would have worked better if it was set in college, LOL. I so see Bella as a literature major. Still, she'll have no time for Edward because she has many assigned readings. We all know that she prefers to read Romeo and Juliet than celebrate her birthday—thought daughter priorities. So I guess college wouldn't have worked, LOL.
Also, Jessica is right. It is weird for an adopted group of teenagers who are meant to have sibling relationships to be together in a romantic relationship. They should at least not make any confirmation in public that they are together or any public display of affection because it may be taken the wrong way, and it definitely adds to the weird cult vibes from them, as many suspected. They should portray a good sibling relationship that is platonic and not romantic. It won't be that difficult to at least pretend for a few hours in a day when they're in public. So don't make them weirder than they already are, and I think "humanizing" that way would work better. Plus, if they were in a different decade, it would be controversial for young teens to be together and living in the same house without confirmation of being married. Of course, many will suspect that they are having premarital sex. Many people were religious then, so it would not bode well if they tried to fit into human society.
But it's still so icky having a vampire romance in high school because why is my vampire love interest pursuing me even though they know I'm not of legal age yet??? Don't they have other vampires that are the same age as them?? It's the typical vampire romance, but it's not my cup of tea anymore. I feel weird reading stories that are set in high school because I'm not in high school anymore, and I'm reading about minors doing explicit things?!?!?! No way.
So that's it! If you need any more specifications, please let me know!
