✧ ─ BACKGROUND

TLDR: Soul grew up in Sichuan, China and later moved to Sydney, Australia at 8yo. They love many types of physical activities - especially dancing - and have been taking classes since a really young age. Soul's music taste is influenced by their mother and two older brothers, later getting into the cpop and kpop scene through Chinese SNS. They moved back to China at 15yo with one of there brother's, and was accepted into Yuehua entertainment after a long and bumpy audition process. After 2 years there, they moved to South Korea, thing as there's a better chance of success there. They then trained under Woolim before transferring back to Yuehua after seeing there are branches in Korea as well.

Soul grew up in Sichuan, China and moved to Sydney, Australia at the age of 8 with their family. They are AFAB (assigned female at birth) but have 2 older brothers which (bullied Wen Ling a lot) influenced them to present more masculine.

Soul loved to dance from an early age. They honestly loved all types of physical activity, but dancing was definitely their favorite. Their parents put them into classes after seeing how much they loved to dance, and Soul absolutely thrived there. Soul was really sad after they had to move from China and away from all their friends and dance buddies, but as soon as the family settled down in Australia, Wen Ling was put right back into a dance class.

But of course, as this is an asian family, Soul was also dragged into learning some sort of instrument. When they were 4, their dad made them choose an instrument to learn, and Wen Ling chose the gu qing, saying that they felt this strange attraction when they saw it.

Soul's music taste was mainly influenced by their brothers and Mother. Their brothers blasts rap and hip-hop through speakers (where the entire neighbourhood could basically hear) when their parents aren't home, and whenever their family goes on road trips, Soul's mom would control the aux and blast hyperpop and metal (this is why Wen Ling's hearing is so bad guys !!). Soul grew up to really enjoy loud music, especially hyperpop and EDM (They have a softer side dw they listen to a lot of traditional Chinese music and their guilty pleasure is Keshi). Wen Ling started writing poems and lyrics in their free time when they aren't dancing and is cooling down, and it quickly became a big hobby.

As they are a first-generation immigrant, Soul was still really tied to China and is pretty active on Chinese SNS including Weibo and WeChat, as well as watches lots of c-dramas and Chinese reality shows. It was through this exposure that they got to know cpop and kpop, at the age of 11.

As soon as they saw these idols, they knew that this was what they wanted to be. Soul started listening to lots of c/kpop alongside what they already were, and started learning lots of kpop dances.

At the age of 15, Wen Ling decided to move back to China with one of their brothers. Their parents didn't know what it was for at the time, but they allowed it and decided it wouldn't be that big of a deal to move back, as they still had lots of relatives there.

One day, while Wen Ling was wandering around in the mall looking for their brother (Soul got lost), they got randomly scouted by Yuehua. It was a pleasant surprise for them, and they made a big deal about needing to have their performance perfect for the audition. However, the stress Soul was feeling before and during the audition made them mess up a few times in the dance they prepared, and Wen Ling thought they definitely didn't have a chance. They were so sad when they left and as a nice older brother, he treated them to ice cream to try to cheer them up. For the next few weeks Wen Ling didn't get any phone calls or email, so they started accepting that they didn't get in. However, what Soul didn't know was that they did get through the audition but they had given the wrong phone number and all the emails Yuehua had sent them were in their spam folder. It was on another visit to the very mall where Soul got scouted that they bumped into the Yuehua scouter again, and told them about how Wen Ling didn't reply to any of their messages and was wondering if Soul had changed their mind. After Soul apologized profusely about what had happened and successfully made it through 2 more auditions, they were finally in Yuehua.

After two years of training there, Wen Ling realized that they would get a better chance of success in South Korea, and promptly decided to move there.

It was around this time that they had finally told their parents about the reason why they actually moved to China and that they would like to move to South Korea. Soul's mother supported them, but their dad took a bit more time.

In Korea, Wen Ling got accepted into Woollim and trained there for 1 year and 6 months before switching back to Yuehua after seeing that they also have branches in Korea.
