THE WIND HOWLED LIKE A BEAST UNLEASHED, TEARING THROUGH THE STREETS WITH A FURY THAT LEFT NO ROOM FOR HESITATION. Rain lashed against Charlie's face, her soaked hair clinging to her cheeks and whipping across her vision.
She could barely see through the chaos, the world around her a blur of grey and black as the storm raged on. But through it all, Kate's grip on her arm was unyielding, a lifeline that kept them tethered to each other as they stumbled forward on the slippery road.
Charlie's chest heaved with the effort of every step, her boots sliding on the water-slick asphalt. Her heart pounded not just from the exertion but from the gnawing fear that clawed at her insides.
The theatre loomed ahead, its once-sturdy walls shuddering against the force of the storm. She knew it wouldn't hold; it wasn't built to withstand something like this. The tornado was already upon them, and she had to act now—before it was too late for Tyler and the others inside.
"Charlie, slow down!" Kate's voice barely carried over the roar of the wind, her hand tightening on Charlie's arm, "You are gonna slip!"
"We don't have time!" Charlie shouted back, her voice hoarse. She didn't want Kate here. She'd begged her to stay behind, to find safety somewhere—anywhere but out in this storm. But she knew better than anyone that Kate wouldn't let her go alone. Not after the accident. Not after they'd already lost so much.
If they were going to face this, they'd face it together. That's how it had always been.
The rain pelted against their skin, cold and relentless, soaking them to the bone. Charlie's hand flew to her face, brushing the hair out of her eyes as she caught sight of the red truck parked near the end of the street block.
It stood out like a beacon, its familiar silhouette igniting a flicker of hope in her chest. Tyler had to be safe in the theatre for now, even if she knew the opposite. He had to be okay.
"We're almost there!" She yelled, her voice cracking as she grabbed Kate's hand and pulled her forward. The road ahead was a battlefield of debris, shingles, and shattered glass, the remnants of homes and businesses that had been torn apart.
But Charlie felt something else too, beneath the fear and adrenaline. A strange, wild exhilaration. The storm was terrifying, yes, but it was also alive, a force of nature that pulsed and raged with a power she couldn't help but marvel at. For a fleeting moment, she found peace in the chaos, the rain washing over her like a cleansing flood.
Yet, the fear remained. Fear for Tyler, for Kate. Fear that this plan—the one they'd barely had time to piece together—would fail. Charlie's gaze flicked to the truck again, a prayer forming on her lips as the tornado's deafening roar grew louder. She could feel its pull now, the air around them electric and alive with its fury.
"Kate," She called over the wind, breathless as they reached the truck, "We're gonna make this work. We have to."
Kate's eyes met hers when they arrived at the vehicle, fierce and unyielding. "We've got this," She said, her voice steady despite the storm, "Let's get them out."
Charlie nodded, her hand trembling as she reached for the door. The storm might rage around them, but she managed to pull open the door with a grunt, and slipped inside, with Kate getting into the passenger side.
Normally, she wouldn't be driving, but in that moment she didn't think, nor worry about how terrible she was at it. All she cared was saving the people who mattered most to them, and those innocent stuck in the storm.
Her drenched body landed on the driver's seat, one that she knew Tyler sat in daily, and had no time to squeal over how she got to sit in it also, or how she could still smell the faint cologne he wore in the truck.
The sisters fumbled with their wet fingers, grabbing the seatbelts and buckled themselves up, hoping to give some more protection incase things went wrong. Next, Charlie took a deep breath to steady herself, heart pounding like a drum in her chest, and shared a confident look with Kate, who nodded back reassuringly.
And with that, the girl was starting up Tyler's red truck, revving it a bit and turned the wheel so it was driving now in the open road, where all the chaos currently was.
The wiper blades weren't doing much for clearing the rain, but it managed to give her some visual of the tornado they were going up against. The powerline up ahead on the side of the road, ended up blowing up from the lighting and they both flinched watching it do so.
Electricity was crackling along it, and Charlie made another sharp turn, her fingers gripping the wheel so tightly she was afraid her bones might snap.
She drove them onto the grass field, now coming face to face with the fierce looking tornado that swirled around in the air, it growing by the second. Her stomach twisted seeing that, normally excited to witness the creation, but now -- knowing they had to drive into it to stop it, she felt more terrified then anything.
"It's okay, Bear." Kate's shaky voice caught her attention, as Kate placed one of her hands on Charlie's leg to give a reassuring squeeze, "It's alright. I'm right here with you, nothing's going to happen."
Charlie only gave a wobbly smile back, one that was full of fear then relief, but still felt somewhat better after her sisters' comfort. She continued to drive towards the killzone, not stopping for anything as she gripped the wheel tighter.
Back where the theatre was, Tyler was limping a little back to where the back door was located, and saw it was still open, "Charlie! Kate!" He yelled the girl's names, not seeing them anywhere, which made his nerves spike up knowing how reckless his Charlie was.
He had a hand on his sore leg, and bumped into the flapping doors, as he leant into one to stop it from moving around, "Charlie!" He tried calling again, his being carried over the rustling wind that blew around his blonde locks.
However, he soon spotted something familiar in the distance. His gaze narrows down trying to make out what it was through the rain, and finally spotted his red truck on the move, heading straight for the monstrous tornado lurking over them all.
Coming up from behind him, Javi and Boone appeared, both wondering where the sisters were and where Tyler went, "Where's Kate and Charlie?" Javi asked the quiet male, fearful for his best friends safety.
Tyler didn't say anything, only continued to stare where he knew Charlie was, inside his truck heading right for the storm. They all watched this happen now, and waited with held breath as they got closer and closer to the weather event.
Charlie wasn't stopping for nothing, not even when pieces of debri slammed into the car, and made her yelp which made her to jolt the steering off course a bit. But, Kate was there to fix them back up, and she held onto one side the wheel.
Out of the corner of her dark eye, she could see more derbi floating around in the wind, and felt it all slam into the truck. Coming up on there left, the power plant was sparking also, and eventually caught on fire, making her gulp scared knowing they had to drive through it.
"Watch out!" Kate yelled in warning to her sister, just as one of the canisters had exploded and was picked up by the wind, just norally missing the truck they were in.
A small, scared whimper left Charlie hearing another explosion caused by the canister, but just swallowed her fear and pressed down strongly onto the gas, driving faster then before.
Though it didn't help, as they were getting closer to the main event, which is what freaked her out the most. The grey, fierce looking tornado that loomed above them, with its howling wind that could be mistaken for as screams.
"I think here is good." Charlie panted out, coming to a complete stop when she took her foot off the gass. The truck was a few meters in front of the incoming storm, and she was quick to press the red button on the gear stick, which sent down the anchors into the muddy dirt below.
Kate nodded in agreement, following her sister's movement and pressed more buttons on the gears. It sent up flares into the storm, and they both noticed what way the wind was traveling inside the funnel.
Once that was done, Charlie let one hand off the steering wheel and flipped open the cover placed over the newly installed button to release their project that Tyler put in for her, fingers hovering over it.
Kate reached over to grab that hand tightly with her own, both of them sharing a look of understanding and fear. Both of them knew if anything happened, they would be together no matter what. Even in life or death.
Loud yelps escaped them when the tornado was right over the truck seconds later, shaking the vehicle around and this also alerted those who were witness to it from the sidelines back at the theatre.
Tyler's heart dropped like a stone as the truck was engulfed in the churning chaos. One moment it was there, fighting against the wind, and the next, it was swallowed whole.
"NO! Charlie!" He screamed, the sound raw and primal, a cry ripped straight from his soul. He surged forward instinctively, but strong hands clamped down on his arms, holding him back. Javi and Boone, their faces grim, struggled to keep him in place as he thrashed against them.
"Let me go!" Tyler shouted, his voice breaking as he fought against their grip. The wind whipped at his face, stinging his skin with grit and cold, but none of it mattered, "Charlie!"
"Tyler! Tyler, stop!" Javi yelled over the wind, his own voice edged with panic, as he also shared what the male was feeling about watching the sisters disappear.
"Damn it, she's out there! She's out there!" Tyler's voice cracked, tears burning in his eyes as he strained against them. The rage, the fear—it all swelled in his chest, suffocating him as he watched the storm devour everything in its path.
"Char wouldn't want you out there too!" Boone shouted, his muscles taut as he hauled Tyler back with all his strength.
Still, Tyler pushed and clawed, desperation making him reckless. His mind raced, every fiber of his being screaming at him to run, to do something, anything to save her.
But the storm was unrelenting, merciless. Javi and Boone managed to drag him back inside the doors, slamming them shut just as a deafening crack split the air—a piece of a building torn apart and hurled into the street.
Inside the theatre, Tyler collapsed to his knees, trembling and gasping for air. He gripped the metal structure beside him with his hands, his knuckles white as gasps racked his body. His head hung low, tears welling in his eyes.
"Charlie.." He whispered, his voice broken, as the storm raged on outside. When he just got back the girl he loved more then anything, he lost her in the blink of an eye. He failed her, again. His biggest fear was brought to life.
Tyler had to believe though, he had to hold onto the hope he had that his Charlie survived that. She went through too many storms to not come out on top. He felt it in his bones that she was alright, but the fact he watched her get swallowed up by the tornado would haunt him for years to come.
The tornado was picking up in speed over where the sisters were, the back of the truck was getting thrown around where the trailer was attached full of the powder they were waiting to release.
"Okay, okay, okay--" Charlie was muttering more so to herself, getting herself prepared as she went to press down on the red button. But for some reason, nothing worked nor moved, causing the sisters to share a wide, eyed panicked look.
Kate turned over her shoulder, and saw how none of the lids were off, meaning the button wasn't working. So, she took over the pressing now, and frantically tapped down on the button, "Come on, come on, come on,"
They heard the low hum of the machine trying to work, but still nothing was budging. Charlie felt her stomach twist with unease, feeling how the truck was slowly slipping back, even with the anchors in the ground to hold them.
No progress was getting made, no matter how hard or how much Kate was pressing the button. Charlie kept a strong grip on the wheel, her heartbeat pounding in her ears as she feels the trailer getting lifted up even more, followed by the truck they were in.
"It's not--" Kate heaved out, wide eyes finding Charlie's face who was looking straight ahead to the storm over them, not seeming scared nor worried, but inside she felt it, she just didn't show it, "It's not working!"
Charlie snapped over towards her sister hearing that, a finger grazing the necklace that stuck to her wet skin, before a grunt left her as she slammed her fist down onto the button. And then, the barrel lids were flying off like nothing happened.
All the mixture was dragged up by the wind, it traveling towards the storm and getting twisted around the funnel. Charlie also knew the tornado was over the theatre now, and she prayed Tyler, and everyone else would be safe, but that was why they were out there to save them.
The sisters shared a shaky smile between each other, watching the sodium polyacrylate drift up into the tornado. They waited with baited breath, dearly hoping their plan would work out. However, the weather said otherwise.
Just as the mixture went into the funnel, a massive piece of derbi suddenly flew into the barrels on the trailer, causing the girls to yell out in alarm. The truck was moving back more, even with the anchors stuck in the dirt.
Charlie's thoughts drifted to Tyler as she knew this was the final stretch, and her hands slowly lifted off the steering wheel, to place them gently onto her thigh, the other grasping Kate's hand tightly in her own.
Both sisters looked at each other for the final time, followed by a reassuring hand squeeze, before the truck was flipping over and topping along the ground, causing the girls to hold on tighter and terrified screams to escape them.
When they came to, the tornado had completely vanished, only leaving the chaos it left behind in it's wake. Everyone was safe, thanks to the quick thinking of Charlie and the bravery of both sisters who risked their lives to save them all.
A loud groan came from Charlie, as her brown eyes fluttered open, and squinted from the bright sun shining down from the clear skies. She didn't even worry about her injuries, nor how the truck as flipped over, as her first thought was on Kate.
"Kat-- Kate!" Her voice sounded croaky, barely even heard as she coughs and rolls onto her stomach with another groan. She couldn't see nor feel where Kate was, but felt instant relief when she heard her sister's voice from outside of the truck.
"I-I'm here, Charlie." The said girl groaned in response, and felt Kate's hands grip onto her arms, to carefully slide her out from under the flipped truck. Kate helped Charlie out, but only got halfway when they heard people behind them.
Charlie glanced up with lidded eyes, just spotting how Tyler was the first running over to where they were, followed by Javi and the rest of their group. Tears appeared in her eyes at this, relieved to know they were all unharmed and their plan worked.
She spat out the dirt in her mouth, and ignored how her body felt sore all over, as she brought a hand to her forehead, groaning seeing the crimson tint covering her fingertips.
"Charlie!" Tyler exclaimed in a crying bellow, him getting to her faster seeing the state she was in beside Kate, and finally dropped to his knees when he arrived next to her, "Char--"
His trembling hands reached out, lopping around her waist and arm gently, as he slowly brought her up, "Easy, baby, easy. You're okay." He cooed hearing her groan in pain, and how she wanted to sit up without any help, "Easy, I've got you."
Javi was helping Kate now, while Tyler was making Charlie lean against his side, the girl basically sitting in his lap with her legs dangling over his thighs also. The rest of the crew were slower, but they were running towards where they were.
"Is everyone alright?" Charlie croaked in a rasp, her head lulling to the side which caused Tyler to gently grasp it, one hand cradling the back of her head, while the other wrapped around her waist, "Did-- did it work?"
Tears built up in his eyes gazing down at the love of his life, as his fingers softly brush back a strand of her hair behind her ear, careful of her injuries, "You two did it, Charlie." He breathed out, throat feeling tight as he nods his head, "You did it, sweetheart."
She released a noise, that sounded like a sob more then anything as she looked up at Tyler, "I knew we could," She whispered through a grunt, and placed her trembling palm over his cheek, using her thump to wipe away the tears that wet his skin, "Never doubted us for a second."
He chuckled fondly when she did the tornado wrangler finger spin, flashing a toothy, watery grin at her, as he leans down and rested his forehead against hers, their noses touching gently, "M'so glad you're okay."
Despite feeling like she was close to death, her cheeks flushed at him being so close, and grasped his red flannel tightly in one of her hands, as he rubbed his nose against hers in a soft caress, still cradling the back of her head gently.
They continued this soft hold on each other, Javi and Kate watching with soft smiles at the pair, as they were in a similar embrace. But, with the sound of their incoming group hollering and cheering, they all broke apart expect how Tyler kept Charlie close to his chest.
"Oh, my god, that was amazing." Dani laughed happily, as she ended up behind Javi and tackled him in a hug, them both on the floor with the rest coming up to where they were.
"You're brilliant." Ben praised the two sisters with a wide smile, making Charlie flustered not use to all the praises that kept coming at them from their gang, and she hid her face a bit against the crook of Tyler's neck, feeling his deep chuckles.
"You did good, girl." Lily squatted down to where her new friend was, and reached forward to squeeze Charlie's arm that wasn't in bad shape, a soft smile gracing her features that had the latter beaming back.
"I think I love you." Boone was next to praise, his dark eyes glancing between both sisters but shot Charlie a cheeky wink, as he noticed the scowl Tyler expressed after hearing his words.
Tyler rolled his eyes at his best friend, and pulled Charlie closer to his side gently, "Get in line, Boone." He grumbled annoyed, making everyone but the girl laugh, who didn't even realise what he said nor what it meant.
As the rest of the group talks, and laughs among each other after all the events that happened, Charlie was too busy staring up at Tyler. Him, feeling her stare, turns his head to give her a tender smile and leans forward to rest his forehead against her temple, leaving a brush of a kiss on her cheek.
The two childhood best friends were together again, and that's all that matter. They couldn't be more happier.
