Salem has been carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders since she was a kid. She is that type of her person, silent as they become lost in a vase ocean of worry, responsibility, and fear. You can see it sometimes, little cracks in her nonchalant facade. Through sleepy mumblings of honesty, or exhaustion in her eyes. She takes on everyone's worries, like a sponge that no one had bothered to wring out for a month.

She's quiet, but not timid. She isn't shy, at least not enough to hold her back, but she does tend to keep to herself. One could call her standoffish, this is only due to worrying that distractions may make her world come crumbling down. If you do know her though, you would know the truth of who she is.

Someone who is the definition of bittersweet. A sad soul, turned tragic in her youth, yet still bursting with vibrance like a poignant watercolor painting. She's talented to a fault, and it's suffocating sometimes. She's kind, but it destroys her. She's the moon, and the stars all in one person.

Intelligent, witty, wistful, longing to be free, generous, a romantic (but only with the right person) and a bit too reckless with herself.

If one could be the personification of sad prose, it would be Salem. Her mind is an abstract oil painting, and her hurt is a myriad of bleeding colors that taint her happiness. She's a poem, a siren's song, and a muse to those who can understand her complex and lulling mind.

Writing. She's been hailed as one of, if not the, best lyricists of her generation. She knows just how to write beautiful, and haunting songs that create an atmosphere for themselves.

Humility. Salem, despite how she rose to fame, is extremely humble. She has a good head on her shoulders, and hasn't let her talent form her into a beast.

Her mind. And how beautifully she thinks, like vines growing through the cracks of a shattered window. She's brilliant, and in tune with the world around her.

Generous, creative, smart, adaptable, and very kind once you get to know her.

Compassionate. To a fault, she's a very compassionate and understanding person. To the point where it can destroy her, because she's constantly worried about helping others and connecting to their pain to try and take their ache away.

Anxious. Salem is a very anxious person, to the point where it keeps her from eating and sleeping. It can take a toll on her, and it's made worse by the fact that she doesn't open up to others much.

Internalizing. She internalizes most everything because she doesn't want to bother others. She's also utterly private, because she doesn't want others to know about her history. Partly because she wants to keep the pain of her past from the public, and also because it's hard for her to talk about.

Reckless, stoic, defensive, too harsh sometimes, overly critical of herself.

Failing. She's terrified of failing her family, in life, and in everything she does.

Abandonment. She is scared that every time she gets close to someone, they'll end up leaving her in the dust.

Dying young. The concept of passing away after a long life is comforting to Salem, but the thought of dying young is petrifying.

Not seeing anything before she dies, losing people, drowning.

โ„’๐’พ๐“€๐‘’๐“ˆ-

Music. In general, Salem is very talented in music. Her upbringing forced her to be the best she could, and even better when her best wasn't good enough. She spent her youth learning, and teaching herself the art of music in each of it's divine forms. Singing, lyrics, instruments and even production.

Performing. It's not the attention she likes, rather the sense of community found when singing for a concert. She loves the way the world seems truly alive while dancing around to a happy song, or crying to a sad one.

Learning. She loves learning wherever she can. She has extensive knowledge about different cultures, cooking, literature, and knows a few languages.

Hearing other people's stories, finding muses in curious places, exploring ideas, old poetry and tragic prose, travel, art, halloween, records, sweet coffee, honey, midnight talks.

๐’Ÿ๐’พ๐“ˆ๐“๐’พ๐“€๐‘’๐“ˆ-

Opening up. She finds it difficult to open up to others, and it makes her very uncomfortable to do so. She isn't impossible to get to know, but earning her trust can be difficult.

Staying still. Salem feels the need to see all she can in life. For this reason, she doesn't like staying still for too long for feeling stagnant.

Oddly enough for someone in her line of work, talking about herself. She finds it atrociously cocky to talk about her accomplishments, and achievements and her good deeds. She thinks the best parts of a person are the ones you understand from seeing, as opposed to listening.

Early mornings, black coffee, simplicity, wasting things (life, chances, money, food, time, anything) greed, tour buses, books with happy endings, songs made for the sole purpose of being catchy.

Messy. That's the best way to describe her history.

Salem Calloway was born in a small town in France, to two young adults who had no idea what they were doing. She was a product of a summer fling, between a woman from France (who was on holiday to Italy) and a man from Italy. They weren't planning on being more than July's romance, but everything changed when the woman found out she was pregnant.

Despite the fact that they didn't like each other in a serious way, they decided move in together as they were both very traditional. Extremely religious, and extremely ashamed of the fact they had a child out of wedlock, they got married.

Skip ahead a few very rocky years of marriage, the parents started loathing each other. Lorenzo became a monster, cruel and unjust to both Marcelle and Salem, and wasn't shy to use his hands to communicate. He hit, and screamed, and constantly blamed Salem for ruining his life.

"๐™ฐ๐š—๐š ๐šŠ๐š ๐š˜๐š—๐šŒ๐šŽ ๐™ธ ๐šŠ๐š– ๐šŽ๐š—๐š๐š›๐šŠ๐š—๐šŒ๐šŽ๐š..."

Her mother wasn't much better, but Marcelle was leas blatant about her hate for her own kid. She used the bible to reprimand, telling her every little mistake she made would send her to hell. And that if she didn't help her parents, God would be upset and punish her. As Salem got a bit older, she began to fall away from religion in secret.

She didn't believe, but she was sure she'd have been burned alive if she told anyone. So, she went to Church, and pretended even while her parents used religion against her. Really, they all pretended when they went to church. Pretended they were happy, and healthy and covered their bruises, and hid their anger.

"๐™ฐ๐š—๐š ๐š๐š‘๐šŽ๐š— ๐šŠ ๐š๐šŠ๐šก๐š’ ๐šœ๐š˜๐šž๐š—๐š๐šœ ๐šŠ ๐š‘๐š˜๐š›๐š—

Salem became the person her parents took everything out on, which actually helped their marriage a bit technically. Salem was forced to get two jobs, all while maintaining perfect grades to pay rent so her mother didn't have to work, and her father could spend more an alcohol and poker. While growing up, she taught herself things like play violin, languages, cooking, and how to be the parent she never had.

Around 14, she started realizing there was a girl at school who she always felt nervous around. She convinced herself, or tried to, that she was being silly. That there was no way she was anything besides straight, but somewhere along the way, that became harder to say. She kept it a secret, internalizing all the fear and homophobia she had from the way she'd grown up.

Around this same time, her father had decided he had enough. He left, without a word or a note, leaving behind Marcelle and Salem. This, of course, only made things a lot worse in terms of her home life.

"๐™ฐ๐š—๐š ๐š’๐š ๐š’๐šœ ๐š™๐šŠ๐š›๐š”๐šŽ๐š ๐š˜๐šž๐š๐šœ๐š’๐š๐šŽ ๐š๐š‘๐šŽ ๐šŒ๐šŠ๐š๐šŽฬ

๐™ธ๐š–๐š™๐šŠ๐š๐š’๐šŽ๐š—๐š..."

It wouldn't be long after that that her mother would pass in a car accident. When this happened, Salem was sent to live with a relative she didn't know in America. She became somewhat troubled, slept around, drank, smoked, and in general got into some trouble.

What she didn't know was that the uncle she had been sent to live with was sketchy. He got arrested after a few months of Salem staying with him for fraud, and tax evasion. Once again leaving the kid on her own. Dropped into foster care, and bouncing from horrible home to horrible home until she was seventeen.

At seventeen, Salem finally was taken in by a family who would love her as their own child. She came out, got straightened out, and was free to pursue her interests without having to pay the bills in her home. It took time to adjust and trust them, but that home gave her a found family of a man and woman who'd be like parents, and two other kids who would be like her siblings.
