•History•
Constance was born into a poor family, of little status, little wealth, and little love. The only person of her family that Constance truly cared for was her younger brother.
||the bitter luck of it all, is that her brother would be one of the ones to stab her in the back||
When she was young her father grew ill, and lost his life to a disease that was never known. This made their family struggles worse, as money became even tighter. But wouldn't you have it, her father had known a man who was wealthier than a fat cat on a throne of tuna.
He took pity on their poor, abusive mother, and offered them a deal. He would allow them to live in one bedroom of his mansion, and get them out of their cardboard frame of a home, and feed them table scrapes if all three became servants.
And so, that's what they did. She and her brother did the heavy lifting, because to quote their mother 'they were young, and not stricken with the same grief as she was' but, it allowed the siblings to become very close.
For many years the boy and girl were thick as thieves.
||Ironic given Constance's future career choice||
And it seemed nothing could shake that bond. But when Constance was 17 years old, she realized a terrifying truth. She had fallen madly, truly and deeply in love with the rich man's daughter.
||See, Constance spent every afternoon tutoring Adelaide and soon enough the hardest equation was figuring out how to hide her feelings||
Constance kept her distance as much as she could, and only interacted with Adelaide when she had to. Until the other one day asked why Constance was doing this... and if it perhaps was because of feelings that Adelaide may have reciprocated.
And thus began their secret romance, kept by the promise of pain if they were to ever share it. The two girls were in love, and the only thing that could shatter it was a marriage. A marriage set up by Adelaide's father, for her to wed a rich man who could take care of her.
||While Constance was devastated, she had always had a feeling their love could not last||
Constance and Adelaide agreed hastily under the cover of moonlight that they could no longer see each other. The next day Constance's dear brother was acted oddly, and avoiding her.
||soon Constance would learn that the cover of moonlight was not enough to fend of prying ears||
Her brother ratted out her and Adelaide's conversation to her fiancé. What did Adelaide do? She told everyone that Constance had seduced her, and tried to tempt her with evil and that she was helpless to it. Constance became a devil of sorts, a vile temptress set on corrupting the holy.
||they would try to hold a trial against her, and Constance would fake her death and flee the city||
Constance hopped a train to tale her far away from the place that betrayed her. The place of the woman she still loved. And she would fall into crime alone- because if she was already a criminal in the eyes of those who were 'holy' what was the point in trying to be good?
