With the Sun collapsed beneath giant clouds, a woman lies in her bed, feeling the weight of those clouds as if she herself was the Sun.
She wasn't feeling any better since the previous night, or the one before that. Every night was filled with the same dread of what might happen.
The city of Seoul was always so busy, even during nighttime, but lately, it's become dark and empty. Why, she often asked herself. She was determined to find that out.
With the Sun down, her energy drained from work and absolutely no will to get up, she eventually does. She gets dressed, nearly tripping over her bag, abandoned on the floor as soon as she got home.
She then sighs, and holds herself together. Or so she tries, before muttering a few curses. Light ones, of course. Totally didn't scream fuck across the entire apartment complex.
„I wish I was always as poetic as I sometimes am. But the poet society is dead, and so are most of my manners." she speaks out loud, as if to explain herself to the non-existent shadows of her predecessors.
She sighs once more. This time, it's to collect her thoughts. She checks the time and weather, making sure it was still foggy. The storm has only ended a few minutes ago, cue the sudden means to go out.
„You know, this would be a lot easier if I knew what I was searching for. Maybe for once could I get a clue? It's like a game at this point, and I'm a sore loser." she complains some more while zipping up her boots. She snatches her keys afterwards, along with her phone and pepper spray, just in case men decided to not just ruin her day, but her night too.
„Realistically, this wouldn't do shit. But I still carry it around..." she mumbles, then continues with a more confident tone while making her way down the stairs.
"Realistically though, I could beat the shit out of most men I've seen around."
The woman smirks, shaking her head. The door in front of her creaks as she pushes it open, despite it being modern, and she finally takes in the smell of a rainy night in Seoul.
Her gaze lowers from the sky to puddles and their reflection of streetlights. The urge to jump into them intensifies.
She chuckles and walks down the street, then turns left and does that for a while. She's searching for anything that could be causing these people to stay home. Was there something they were scared of?
She wouldn't know. She was an extrovert, but people just weren't really into hanging out with foreigners anymore. Whenever her european accent pushed it's way through the words she spoke, people would immediately stare her down like a doll at show and tell. Usually, a nod of understanding or a shrug was what she'd do before leaving awkwardly. Sometimes people would be nice though. Sometimes they'd take her in, and be kind. That was before she'd realize they were talking to her solely because of the foreign part of her. Because she was sooo exotic.
Kicking stones had became a classic way of spending the time outside for her. It was something to do while waiting for something else to happen, you know? Something actually interesting. Not like the splashes rocks made in puddles.
She groaned in frustration, grabbing one of the rocks and throwing it for once instead of kicking it.
What could scare an entire metropolis into abandoning the night, and only move during the day?
Another stone. More stones. Some more right after. Then the streetlight turns off.
She blinks a few times.
„Huh?"
Suddenly, she doesn't feel so alone in the dark.
She's about to mutter some new beautiful curse words, but then she sees a silhouette and she shrieks. She screams dramatically, forgetting about her years of martial art practice momentarily.
„Will you shut it, youngster!?" the silhouette speaks, and she immediately drops her guard down, her body aswell as she slides her back against the wall with a nervous laugh.
„It's just a grandma.. with a dog.. of course. That's not scary at all!" Y/N whispers to herself in her native language, reassuring herself she's okay, because she herself was not sure.
The grandma shushes her once more: „What are you muttering?! Have you got no respect for your elders?!"
„My apologies.. I wasn't expecting anyone to be outside at this time of day.."
„Were you now.." the lady scoffs, though Y/N's immediate bows of apologies seemed to calm the grandma down a small bit. „Do you think you're the only one who doesn't believe in vampires?"
„The what now?"
„Are you deaf or something?! Here I thought I was meant to be the old and hard of hearing one. Come here. Come closer, if your hearing is that bad." she gets angry again, slamming her walking stick in front of her.
Y/N listens, though just before the grandma has a chance to see her face, she rolls her eyes. „I'm a foreigner. That should explains a lot. Anyways, what do you mean by vampires?"
„You don't know what a vampire is?" the lady's frown drops even lower.
Y/N slightly runs out of patience: „For god's sake, I know what a vampire is! I'm just confused as to why people think those things exist. Like.. I think your nine-to-five is a bigger nightmare to worry about."
„That's what I said aswell, but they all believe it, still. It's too easy these days to spread rumors." the grandma agrees, completely ignoring the fact that she just absolutely violated Y/N's ego to the core.
„So, has anyone seen them?"
„They claim so, but I don't buy it. It's all propaganda. If vampires existed, there sure wouldn't be seven of them in one city."
Y/N thinks about the possibility of that. Now that's one giant clue. Seven men, who people claim are vampires. „Are they sure it's not just some wannabe gang?"
„You should've seen their faces while talking about them." the grandma chews on her dentures, replicating their faces for a few moments before gripping the leash a bit tighter. Just then, her dog starts barking at Y/N.
„Why does even the dog have a problem with me?!" she mutters in her native language, before replying to the lady. „I can only imagine the real thing.. but look. If they exist, I'm going to make it my mission to find them. Do you have any clue on how to do so?"
Silence. Awkward silence. Deafening silence. Then the scary silence. It's too silent and it sends shivers down Y/N's spine. „Erm.. mrs., is everything okay?"
„Are you stupid?! This is not a game! Do not search for them. The gangs here are no joke..." she tries to warn Y/N while smacking her with the walking stick, but her voice gets muffled by the loud barking of the dog.
„I'll be careful. I've been living here for a few years now."
„I don't care, I told you to not do it so don't do it!"
„You know what, I'll leave before I abandon the honorifics." Y/N frowns.
The grandma immediately retorts, „Do what you want then. Not like it's my problem."
„It is starting to sound like you're quite worried about the vampires, though."
„I'm not! They're not real."
„Yeah, yeah. Whatever makes you happy, Mrs." Y/N sighs and finally takes the initiative to leave, since the barking of the dog was getting annoying.
The grandma immediately resumes her walk, dragging the dog probably just as old as her along with her. Y/N stands in place for a bit after the few steps she took, grateful for the clues from the old hag despite her attitude.
„Vampires, hm...? Pfft, yeah right. In Seoul? That's like the worst place to be a vampire in! The people here themselves are already bloodthirsty, given how much they overwork others. Should've picked a city in Arkansas, maybe there they would've found people with tastier blood.. god, what am I even saying..? I'm exhausted." Y/N goes on a rant, debating both the possibility of vampires existing and the possibility of people just believing anything.
She stands there for a good two minutes, the streetlight still off, the dog still barking at her even as it slowly disappears into the distance. The woman tries to ignore it and think some more, for example where she should go next time to search, how she'd deal with a gang like that, or possibly, if.. vampires were real, how'd she deal with that.
With a quiet humming sound, she turns around, ready to think this through in her nice, big, warm bed, only to feel her heart stop literal seconds later.
„.."
„Hm? Something wrong?"
