Alrighty here's a guide to imprinting in my a/u series because I made a good bit of changes on the subject. Let's start off with all the things wrong with imprinting in the original twilight series. There's a lot wrong with it so bear with me.

1) imprinting on babies? Ew. That's some pedophilia type shit.
2) apparently when a wolf imprints he/she no longer has their own will to make their own decisions. Whatever their imprintee says they have to follow? That seems like a major violation to human rights. So that's a big ew.
3) It's Brainwashing. "Sam did love Leah. But when he saw Emily, that didn't matter anymore." (Eclipse 122). Excuse me what? Another violation of free will. You don't just stop loving someone, that's a load of bullshit.
4) In the quote from Meyer's own guide, she admits that imprinting essentially removes the free will of the werewolf, causing their entire personality to alter in a way to become better suited to the imprintee. Former relationships, families, even normal hobbies are essentially utterly erased along with, apparently, their entire personality. Thats like depressing asf.
5) Essentially they can't care about other people, because all of their everything is surrounded by that one person. Excuse me? What about family? What about their friends? What about their own pack mates? It's absolutely absurd that Meyers thought that was okay. It completely destroys the family dynamics of the pack and the individuals themselves.
6) Anyone else creeped out? The fact that these characters are essentially losing their entire personality in order to be good boyfriend material so that precious babies can be made, is insane. I don't understand how it was ever socially acceptable and even decently reciprocated from the public. I was young when the twilight books and movies came out so I didn't understand but if I was an adult when these came out I would've flipped my shit on twitter.

Anyways now here's MY much better version of imprinting.

1) Imprinting is more like soulmates. There's different levels to it. It can be romantic, kindred spirits, platonic, etc.
2) It's not always romantic ^ like I stated above it can simply be two people with a bond so close that they're each others best friend.
3) The werewolf still has their own free will to make whatever decisions they want.
4) They don't HAVE to obey their imprintee. But a lot of them prefer to because they want to make them happy.
5) They won't do anything for their imprintee. Each werewolf has their own moral code that they won't break just because she/he tells them to.
6) Their current relationships don't change unless they choose for them to. If a werewolf imprints while he/she is already in a relationship then they don't have to leave it unless THEY choose to. Now a lot of times a werewolf will leave their current romantic relationship if there is one because 9/10 times the dynamic turns romantic with their imprintee, but at the end of the day it's THEIR decision to do so. And if they don't want the dynamic to be romantic then it doesn't have to be.
7) If their imprintee dies then it doesn't mean they have to die too. That whole off themselves if their imprintee dies dynamic is awful and that's not how we're doing it on my terms.
8) Lastly but definitely not least. Werewolves can only imprint on people near their own age.
