03. the hogwarts express

"I PROMISE I'LL TRY TO WRITE EVERY DAY," Harper promised Remus and Dorcas, as the three of them stood on platform nine and three quarters.

"Every day?" Remus repeated, raising an eyebrow. "That's ambitious."

"You know me, Moony," Harper said, grinning. "Go big or go home, right?"

Dorcas sighed. "If only you weren't so much like James . . ."

Harper could tell Dorcas actually didn't mind, though. Her godmother had loved her parents very dearly—as did Remus. She just knew they couldn't technically tell her to cause some trouble while she was at Hogwarts, but she was sure to tell them all about it.

Harper smiled—sadness filling her heart. She had never been away from home for every long before. "I'll miss you."

"We'll miss you, too, munckin," Remus said, brushing a straw of red hair out of her eyes. "But you go and have fun."

"And we're only one letter away," Dorcas added, pulling Harper in for a tight hug.

Harper smiled and hugged her back. Then she pulled back and picked her trunk and Dale's cage up. "I'll see you at Christmas."

After a goodbye smile, Harper followed Ron, who had been patiently waiting for her, onto the Hogwarts Express and the two of them proceeded to find an empty compartment.

"There doesn't seem to be an empty compartment," Ron said, as they passed compartment after compartment. "Oh, look, this one only contains one boy."

"This is our best shot," Harper agreed, nodding.

Ron pushed the door open and stuck his head in. "Excuse me, but could my friend and I sit here? Everywhere else is full."

The boy turned around and smiled, his emeral green eyes shining brightly. "Of course!"

Harper entered the compartment after Ron and put her trunk away before placing Dale's cage next to her on the couch. She then sat down and looked at the boy.

His messy raven hear fell in front of his eyes and he wore round glasses. Remus and Dorcas had shown her a picture of her father and Harper was blown away by the fact that this boy was his spitting image.

Only the eyes . . .

"I'm Ron, Ron Weasley," Ron introduced himself, holding out his hand.

"Harry," the boy said, "Harry Potter."

Harper's mouth fell open, but that was quickly gone when she grinned broadly. She had finally found her brother. After ten years, the two of them were reunited once more.

"Is something wrong?" Harry asked, frowning. "Why are you grinning like that?"

"I'm Harper, Harper Potter," Harper introduced herself.

"You're my twin sister!" Harry exclaimed, grinning, too. "Hagrid told me about you!"

"Only the good things, I hope?" Harper said, laughing.

Harry grinned and for a moment, the two siblings just stared at each other. Harper noticed that the two of them were very different. Though, as she looked longer, she could tell they had the same nose and their faces shapes seemed to be identical.

"Have you got the scar, Harp?" Ron asked her.

Harper shook her head. "I was with Dad downstairs when he came. I guess he didn't see me or just didn't care. He disappeared before he could do something to me."

The three of them continued to talk and soon enough, Harper got to know Harry better. Perhaps they were more alike than she initially thought.

"Anything from the trolley, dear?"

Ron took his slices of bread his mother had made him, and swallowed. "I'm good."

Harper took the sandwich Dorcas had made her and shook her head, too.

Harry glanced at the two of them before turning his head towards the woman, smiling. "We'll take it all."

Harper's eyes widened at the sight of all the candy and she quickly took a Chocolate Frog, her favorite.

"What are these?" Harry asked her and Ron, holding up a pack of Chocolate Frogs. "They're not really frogs, are they?"

"No," Ron said, shaking his head, "But see what card it is? I'm missing Agrippa."

"What?" Harry said, looking very confused.

"Chocolate Frogs have cards inside them," Harper told him quickly, "you know, to collect famous witches and wizards. Ron probably got about five hundred but he still hasn't got Agrippa or Ptolemy, right Ron?"

Ron nodded and Harry unwrapped his Chocolate Frog. He looked at the man in the picture and then at his name. Albus Dumbledore.

"So this is Dumbledore!" Harry exclaimed happily.

"Yes," Harper said, glancing over his shoulder to read the card with him.

ALBUS DUMBLEDORE,

currently headmaster of Hogwarts. Considered by many the greatest wizard of modern times, professor Dumbledore is particulary famous for his defeat of the Dark Wizard Grindelwald in 1945, for the discovery of the twelve uses of dragon blood, and his work on alchemy with his partner, Nicolas Flamel. Professor Dumbeldore enjoys chamber music and tenpin bowling.

After reading the card, Harper glanced at Scrabbers, Ron's rat, who was sleeping on his lap. Ron saw her looking and his expression became one of disgust.

"He might have died and you wouldn't know the difference," he said in disgust. "I tried to turn him yellow yesterday to make him more interesting, but the spell didn't work. I'll show you look—"

He was interrupted by a girl who opened the door of their compartment. She was followed by a boy.

"Has anyone seen a toad?"

Harper shook her head. "No, I'm sorry."

The girl looked at Ron, who had raised his wand. "Oh, are you doing magic? Let's see it, then."

"Er—all right," Ron said, clearing his throat uncomfortably. "Sunshine, daisies, butter mellow, turn this stupid, fat rat yellow."

He waved his wand, but nothing happend. Scrabbers stayed grey and fast asleep.

"Are you sure that's a real spell?" the girl said. "Well, it's not very good, is it? I've tried a few simple spells just for practice and it's all worked for me. Nobody in my family's magic at all, it was ever such a surprise when I got my letter, but I was ever so pleased of course, I mean, it's the very best school of witchcraft there is, I've heard—I've learnt all our set books off by heart, of course, I just hope it will be enough—I'm Hermione Granger, by the way, who are you?"

Harper raised her eyebrows at her enthusiasm, a smile creeping up her lips.

"I'm Ron Weasley," Ron muttered.

"Harry," Harry said, "Harry Potter."

"Are you really?" Hermione asked, cutting Harper off before she even got the chance to introduce herself. "I know all about you, of course—I got a few extra books for background reading, and you're in Modern Magical History and The Rise and Fall of the Dark Arts and Great Wizarding Events of The Twentieth Century."

"Am I?" Harry asked surprised.

Hermione nodded and looked at Harper. "And who are you?"

Harper cleared her throat. "Harper Potter—though my friends call me, Harp."

It was quite funny to see her reaction. It was almost if Hermione didn't believe her. "You're not mentioned in those books."

"That's because I have my own books," Harper replied, flatly.

"Really?"

"No, I was just kidding."

She seemed irritated and switched the subject.

"Do either of you know what house you'll be in? I've been asking around and I hope I'm in Gryffindor, it sounds by far the best, I heard Dumbledore himself was one, but I suppose Ravenclaw wouldn't be too bad . . . Anyway we're better go and look for Neville's toad. You three better change, you know, I expect we'll be there soon."

And she left, taking the toadless boy with her.

"Whatever house I'm in, I hope she is not in it." Ron said.

Harper elbowed him. "That's not a very nice thing to say, Ronald," she said, using his full name.

He grunted and she left so they could change. Afterwards they left so that she could change.

They were talking about Quidditch when three boys entered their compartment.

"Is it true?" the blond one said. "They're saying all down the train that Harry Potter's in this compartment. So it's you, is it?" he added, looking at Harry.

"Yes," Harry replied, looking at the two other boys. Both of them were thickset and looked extremely mean.

"Oh, this is Crabbe and this is Goyle," the blond guy said careless, noticing where they were looking. "And my name is Malfoy, Draco Malfoy."

Who does he think he is? James Bond? Harper thought, having seen some of the movies because Remus liked them and he had insisted she'd watch at least one with them.

"It would be a gap in your culture if you didn't watch them," he would say.

Ron gave a slight cough, which might have been hiding a snigger. Draco Malfoy looked at him.

"Think my name's funny, do you? No need to ask who you are. My father told me all the Weasleys have red hair, freckles and more children than they can afford."

Harper gritted her teeth, deciding now and there that she didn't like this boy. She jumped up. "Who do you think you are, humiliating people like that?" Ron tried to hold her back but she ignored him. "You're just pathetic!"

Draco noticed her standing beside Harry. "Ah another Weasley, I bet she's your twin."

Before Harper could say something Harry stepped forward, facing Draco. "Actually she's mine, so back off!"

Draco didn't go red, but a pink tinge appeared in his pale cheeks. "I'd be careful if I were you, Potter," he said slowly. "Unless you're a bit politer you'll go the same way as your parents. They didn't know what was good for them, either. You hang around with riff-raff like the Weasleys and that Hagrid and it'll rub you off."

Harper swung her fist at him—having seen James Bond do it a couple of times in every single one of his moves and she thought he'd agree with her actions.

Her fist collided with his nose and he stumbled back, blood dripping from it.

"Next time you insult one of my friends, you'll get more than just a nose bleeding," she threatened him.

Fear flashed into Draco's eyes before he ran out of the compartment, Crabbe and Goyle following him. Harper turned and saw Harry and Ron looking at her, their mouths wide open. She grinned. "Be careful or you'll catch flies."

Ron laughed. "That was amazing!"

Harper grinned. "Thanks."

Harry just smiled at her proudly.

A voice echoed through the train, "We will be reaching Hogwarts in five minutes' time. Please leave you luggage on the train, it will be taken to the school separately."

The train stopped and they went off the train. Harper saw a rather large man standing on the platform calling for first years. She dragged Ron and Harry to him. "Firs'—years! Firs'—years over here! All right there Harry?" he asked, looking down at Harry.

Harry nodded. "Everything's fine! I have found my sister!"

Hagrid looked over him to Harper. "Oh Merlin! It's nice to finally meet you, Harper!"

Harper smiled at him. "My friends call me Harp. It's nice to meet you as well, Hagrid!"

They walked over to a lake. Little boats were sitting in the water by the shore. Moonlight reflected onto the water, shimmering in the night.

"No more'n four to a boat!" Hagrid called.

Ron, Harry and Harper all climbed into a boat with Hermione.

"Everyone in?" Hagrid shouted, who had a boat to himself, "Right then—FORWARD!"

And the fleet of little boats moved off all at once, gliding across the lake, which was a smooth as glass. Everyone was silent, staring up at the great castle overhead. It towered over them as they sailed nearer and nearer to the cliff on which it stood.

"Heads down!" Hagrid yelled as the first boats reached the cliff; they all bent their heads and the little boats carried them through a curtain of Ivy which hid a wide opening in the cliff face. They were carried along a dark tunnel, which seemed to be taking them right underneath the castle, until they reached a kind of underground harbor, where they clambered out on the rocks and pebbles.

"Oy, you there! Is this your toad?" Hagrid said, who was checking the boats as people climbed out of them.

"Trevor!" Neville cried blissfully, holding out his hands.

Then they clambered up a passageway in the rock after Hagrid's lamp, coming out at last on to smooth, damp grass right in the shadow of the castle.

They walked up a flight of stone steps and crowded around the huge, oak front door.

"Everyone here? You there, still got yer toad?"

Hagrid raised a gigantic fist and knocked three times on the castle door.
