Chapter 11
THE FOLLOWING DAYS JAEHYUN AND REGULUS SEEMED TO DISAPPEAR together to spaces where no one but the owners of the magical map could seek to find them. It seemed that Regulus had found thousands of hiding spaces to plan in private, casting enough spells to make it as if they had genuinely never even stepped foot in the castle. James had often tried to engage conversations with Jaehyun but he always seemed to slip past his consciousness.
Remus had been more lonely during his study sessions at the library than usual and the warmth that Jaehyun gave the boys seemed to gradually disappear. It seemed as if Regulus was occupying the free time usually spend with the two Marauders. Sirius was growing infatuated with Jaehyun, worried as to what could be happening to his little brother. He swore to merlin that if one hand extra got laid on his brother for such foolish plan he would for sure commit a crime or three.
"People are getting worried you know?" Jaehyun stated as he sat on top table of a deserted classroom on their fourth floor. Regulus merely shrugged and waved his wand to cast a silencing charm. A sigh escaped the lips of the Black heir and sat down on a chair placed in front of Jaehyun. The old wood made a soft creaking noise as if warning not to handle too carelessly.
Regulus his hand silently caressed the hand of Jaehyun, "It is.. Quite a dangerous plan, we're foolish to try and succeed it either way." He responded without much emotion, he let out a non audible whisper to himself, he rubbed over the finger of Jaehyun gently as a way of comfort for him knowing that it was something he appreciated. "It'll be alright, I promise. We'll be alright."
Those words had given the muggleborn just enough strength to be assured to continue their path of adventure. Jaehyun nodded with a tentative smile.
When noon had come Jaehyun decided to try and seek his lost free time and newly found friends he had made the last few months. He was stumbling through the corridors, trying to see if he could potentially find the ones he had left behind for months at a piece. Whilst the Marauders were sat in their bedroom throwing useless remarks.
"You reckon I could just turn into a cup of coffee? I mean we are alike." Sirius randomly commented as his head was hanging low from the right side of his bed. Remus let out an inaudible scream into his pillow before chucking it right at Sirius.
Sirius dodged it but the millimeter and stared at him with a mouth wide agape. He stared as if offended that Remus would ever initiate to preform harm to him. Peter wheezed out laughing, who had been playing a deck of muggle cards with James on their bed. "What was that for?!" The Black star exclaimed shocked as he looked at the pillow which had thrown a questionable amount for paper wraps onto the ground.
"What is it that you figured out this time Sirius? You have one every hour, my character finally had a great dialogue so your coffee better be worth ruining it!" He exclaimed as he clapped the book shut. A loud sound ringing through the dormitory as James and Peter watched the interaction trying to contain their laughter. Sirius being told off was a regular thing that happened between them.
Sirius stared down with a pouty face, "I was going to say that It's because I'm always hot or cool.."
"Shut up mate!" Peter winced grossed out by the thought of finding Sirius genuinely attractive enough to name him hot. Remus his hands flew to rub the tempels on his forehead, he tightly grasped the book and slammed it on the top of Sirius his head.
Sirius winced as he dramatically fell off of his bed to even infatuate the dramatics he caused. Remus and Peter made eye contact, unimpressed by the behaviour they had grown accustomed to the past few years to the point one could easily tell wether or not you knew Sirius personally or not if he pulled a stunt like this.
James laughed hysterically to the point where he clutched his bedsheets tightly to not fall off of his own bed. Peter decided to be a mere angel and pulled him backwards, before pushing him onto Sirius.
A loud grunt was heard from the Black, "Mate you weight like triple your weight than as a deer yet off me!" He winced as he tried to push the Potter boy off of his chest. James whined as he felt a feet in his stomach, "Stop kicking I could be pregnant you know!"
"As if anyone would ever fuck you!"
"Seohyun did!"
"What."
There was a silence that followed that topic, James was staring innocently at Sirius. A hot wave of blush crept onto the cheeks of the Potter boy, as quick as a deer he ran out of the dormitory. His feet landing halfway at the end of each step as he ran out of the corridor looking like a child on cocaine.
"Wait Prongs-!" Sirius called out however his best friend had already fled the crime scene. There was another silence that followed his abrupt leave. Unsure whether or not they should follow their best friend or give him space instead. You could hear James yelling and pushing through the crowd in the common room distantly. The tension swirled in the room, and it felt as if there was a silent agreement to keep their mouths shut about it.
Running through the halls usually packed with students on their way to their designated classes which were now empty James ran his fingers through his hair roughly. A feeling of guilt washed over the enitirity of his body, he prayed to Godric that he had not just made him look like someone who gave their body away, or worse, make Seohyun look like someone who acts like a pedophile. Their age gap would soon be a bit problematic and James himself had not realised at the heat of the moment how tangled up he had gotten inside of the mess.
He had announced proudly, for years at a pace, that he had fallen head over heels, completely out of his mind for Lily. He pushed every thought of dating someone else away because he was certain Lily was perfect. She was kind and caring, and ethereal. It was all he had been thought to love and yet still his mind seemed infatuated with someone older, and someone who was the same gender as him.
The adrenaline pumped inside of his veins as he completely became worried about what Seohyun would say. His head was growing heated as the stress seemed to increase rapidly.
"Ah!"
James looked up completely stressed out, and somehow it never occurred to him that one person could calm his nerves by a simple worried look. Jaehyun stared at him with his furrowed brows which showed his worry for his close friend. His panting calmed quickly and there was a small silence that followed.
Jaehyun spoke up first, "Are- are you alright?" He asked with curious eyes as he had to look up just to make eye contact with the boy who seemed embarrassed out of his mind. James stammered a bit but ended up quietly nodding.
"Yeah- no, no I'm fine.." He calmly responded, or at least as calm as he could manage for the time being. Jaehyun didn't seem convinced but decided to not push it any further seeing as his friend seemed quite stressed. His skin creased as he thought about how to react.
His entire Hogwarts experience he had only had one friend, Regulus. He had never been a complicated person to be around, he had a clear set of boundaries and his own preferences for friends. He picked them out carefully, as if deep inside he knew with whom he could manage or tolerate and whom he couldn't stand, people like Lucius for instance. Regulus however, did have many flaws in his character like every person had. He was stubborn and didn't admit his wrong doings, ever. He didn't open up about how he felt either.
Whenever he was angry or felt betrayed in the trust he had put into a person he kept quiet. Sometimes it was a harsh silence, one that slowly killed you. He would simply stare at you and somehow you would know how much you fucked up. His icy cold stared would pierce through you like a dagger. He absolutely destroyed your self confidence with a mere scoff.
But other times, he would just let it wash over him. He ignored the problem. Regulus would act as if nothing had gone wrong, that nothing bothered him to the core and wait till you realised your own mistake on your own accord, and he never understood why people never admitted to their own wrong doings. Even if Jaehyun never acted out whenever Regulus disrespected him or disregarded his feelings he would always eventually apologise. Regulus couldn't empathise with those around him, he couldn't place himself in the eyes of those around him. The world eventually should be emphasised drastically, because he was still as stubborn as a Black. His veins would scream at him that he should not apologise and he did, but it would take him awhile. He didn't like admitting he was wrong, but Jaehyun was usually one of the few exceptions.
Jaehyun had never really experienced this. He didn't know how to respond to a situation like this and it just ate him from his gut, he felt horrible for not understanding how James felt. He felt like he was barely useful as it was and now he couldn't bare mutter a helpful response to one of his very few friends. He thought for a second before responding entirely with the only thing that seemed to come rushing to his mind.
"You don't seem alright.."
James let out a soft chuckle. He had forgotten how soft spoken Jaehyun really was, with his kind and caring nature despite how others viewed and treated him his entire life. The drastic differences between his set of friends made a small smile creep back onto the sunshine of Hogwarts. He knew bloody well if he were to look like this in front of Sirius he would mock him and call something like: "You look like someone pissed in your Butterbeer!"
"I don't really know if I am okay honestly.." James answered entirely honest as the blazing heat seemed to calmly leave his body. The Korean boy frowned worried and nodded acknowledging his feelings.
"Do you want to talk about it?"
"Would it be weird if I told you I didn't?"
Jaehyun let out a small desired chuckle and shook his head. He felt bad about it but he honestly was quite glad he refused his offer. Jaehyun didn't know how to respond to people talking about their issues. As much as he listened and empathised with their stories, their burdens and traumas he could never find the correct words to respond to them, to give them the closure that they needed. It felt wrong for him to not be able to be their closure, their needed therapist but he just couldn't. Emotions were a confusing topic to him, he couldn't respond to them because he just felt out of place for it.
"I'm quite alright with it." He responded with a cheeky grin which caused a genuine grin to erupt onto his face. The smile that send rays of sunlight roaming through the castle grounds, beating with the scorching sun because nothing compared to Hogwarts their sunshine.
James nodded relieved, before twisting in confusion as he realised it was actually Jaehyun he was talking to, the person who had been off his radar for longer than usual. "We haven't hung out so much.. Want to grab a snack?" He suggested with hopeful eyes. Jaehyun chewed the inside of his cheek. Regulus had specifically asked to not be caught anywhere without him because the Slytherins were watching his every move in every corner of the castle, but Jaehyun stared at his friend's eyes.
The dark brown oak wood eyes stared right back at his with a hopeful glint. Despite them looking down on him it seemed as if he were a dominant creature the eyes were filled with adoration. His eyes were filled with the love a mother could only teach. He had the exact eyes of his mother, those eyes who represented an innocent deer, the eyes of a child who wanted something for once. He could not say no.
Jaehyun could not say no, not when his friend was giving him puppy eyes, not when his eyes seemed so desperate and so loving for a small favour.
