Life in this place was predictable, even after her mother's death a year ago. The kind of quiet Ruby thought she needed. But now, in the sticky haze of early autumn, things were beginning to shift in ways she couldn't quite explain.

SHE FIRST HEARD ABOUT THE MURDER at school. A girl from their grade, Claire Parker, found in her home with the kind of violence that had no place in a town like this. Her best friend, Charlotte, had been the first to tell her, voice low and shaky. Ruby couldn't shake the feeling that the town's idyllic quiet was fraying, like fabric stretched too thin.

HER FRIENDS GROUP was tight-knit, built over the years of living in a small town where everyone knew everyone else. There was, of course, Charlotte, Ruby's childhood friend, who was headstrong and fiercely loyal, always ready to step in when things went wrong. Then there was Tommy, the class clown, quick with a witty comment and always finding himself in the middle of trouble but never seeming to get hurt. Lisa, quiet but perceptive, often kept to the sidelines, but her eyes never missed anything. The only addiction was Jack, the new kid in town, a thrill-seeker with a taste for adventure. Always pushing the group to do something daring, Jack was the one who suggested the midnight hikes and sneaky parties in the abandoned houses that were located just outside the city.
And finally, there was Kurt, her boyfriend —someone Ruby could always rely on. Calm, steady, and protective, he'd been a rock for her when everything else in her life seemed uncertain.

SHE HAD JUST TURNED FIFTEEN when she met Kurt for the first time. He was new in town, a quiet, brooding figure who carried an air of mystery with him wherever he went. He wasn't like the others—his dark blonde hair, rugged demeanor, and haunted gaze made him stand out in a town that prided itself on its normalcy. Ruby felt drawn to him, an undeniable pull that she couldn't explain. He had a way of making you feel like you were the only one in the room, even in a crowd.

THE TENSION STARTED TO BUILD one chilly autumn evening. A party at Jack's house overlooking the hills, the sound of leaves leaving trees gracefully, and the laughter of teenagers echoing into the night. Everything felt perfect—until the power went out. The music cut, and the house was plunged into darkness, leaving only the moonlight streaming through the windows. Ruby felt the hairs on the back of her neck stand on end, a sense of foreboding creeping over her. Then, the phone rang.

A voice, distorted, cold—its words sharp and cruel: "Do you like scary movies, Ruby?"

AS THE DAYS WORE ON, the unease grew. There was a sense of something wrong in the air—something Ruby couldn't shake. The group, once united, became a web of suspicion. The question lingered: Who could be trusted? Was it Charlotte, always quick to defend others but hiding her own secrets? Could Tommy, the joker, be hiding something beneath his humor? Was Lisa, quiet and observant, aware of things she wasn't saying? Was Kurt hiding something, despite his calm demeanor? Or was Jack's adventurous spirit masking something darker?

THE SUSPICIONS MOUNTED, and the lines between friend and foe blurred. Whispers filled the air, and accusations flew. Ruby couldn't shake the feeling that someone in the group was hiding something—maybe everyone was, and she could only wonder who would remain standing when the pieces finally fell into place.
