❝ we're dressed up as you after all. ❞
SPENCER WALKED UP the steps to Olivia's house. It was Halloween, and surprisingly, he didn't dress up this year. Instead, he wore his usual work clothes. Rosie and Oliver insisted he takes them trick-or-treating as they wore the costumes they made themselves where they both dressed up as Spencer. The twins are 16-years-old, so they were more than capable to go by themselves, or even with some friends. But they wanted to go with Spencer, and who would he be if he said no? It's not like he minded, anyway. He loves Halloween and he loves the twins.
He rang the doorbell before hearing footsteps getting closer to the door. The footsteps sounded slightly heavier than normal. Spencer couldn't really make out much of the steps since there were other kids walking around the neighborhood, collecting candy. Once the door swung open, he was able to see that those footsteps belonged to Elijah.
He gave him a smile, "Hey, Spencer! Come in." The man stepped aside to let Spencer in as he just waved at him. After closing the door, Elijah said, "Liv is just helping the twins upstairs. They'll be down in a minute. You can sit down if you'd like."
"Thank you." Spencer uttered. He sat on the couch as Elijah went up the stairs to inform Olivia of Spencer's arrival. He didn't know why he was surprised Elijah was here. He is Olivia's boyfriend, after all. They've been dating for almost a year now and Spencer still hasn't gotten used to him. Don't get him wrong, he has nothing against Elijah. It's just that he can't help thinking that maybe he wanted to be the one with Olivia.
He's been getting those kind of thoughts recently. He's been thinking about his feelings about her, and how he shouldn't be so bothered about the fact that she's dating someone who wasn't him. Spencer has never been an expert at figuring out his feelings, despite sometimes being able to figure out someone else's.
He couldn't fathom the slight possibility that maybe he was. . . jealous. Jealous of Elijah. Jealous that he's the one who gets to spend time with Olivia romantically. Jealous that he was the one who got to hold her hand, and kiss her, and go on fun dates with her. He shouldn't feel this way. He should feel happy for her. Happy that she found someone who loves her just as much as he does. He should be happy that she is.
But maybe he was jealous.
And it frightened him. He didn't want to accept it. Because what would it make him if he admitted that he was jealous of Elijah and his relationship with Liv? Just another selfish, insecure ex-boyfriend. He didn't want to be that type of guy. He wanted to be happy for Olivia. Because it was the least he could do.
Then, Olivia and Elijah walked down the stairs. "Spence, hey! The twins will be down in a sec. They just wanna add their accessories before coming down." He stood up from the couch and Olivia pulled out her phone. She wanted to record Spencer's reaction to the twins' costume.
Once they walked down, their outfits managed to put a smile on everyone's faces. Oliver came down wearing a black cardigan over a light blue button-up shirt, accompanied with a black tie and black jeans. Rosie, however, walked down the steps wearing a patterned, brown, knitted sweater vest over a light purple button-up shirt with the sleeves rolled up. She even paired it with black dress pants and her hair was tied in a low ponytail with a few loose, front strands of her hair framing her face.
"Woah! You guys look great!" Spencer exclaimed. He had the biggest smile out of everyone.
"Yeah, well, you should think so. We're dressed up as you after all." Rosie remarked, putting on her sneakers near the front door. Olivia then announced, "Wait, I need pictures!"
The twins groaned. "You took so many upstairs! Do we really need more?" Oliver complained. Olivia lightly pushed his shoulder, "Stop, you know that we always need pictures."
Olivia let Elijah take pictures of the three of them, and even let Spencer in on some of them. And he genuinely felt happy. But then it was his turn to take the pictures as Elijah took his place next to Liv. And then, right after, Olivia finally let the twins and Spencer go trick-or-treating together.
When they left, both Olivia and Elijah sighed as they sat down on the couch. "So, the twins really do like Spencer a lot, huh?" Elijah remarked. He's known the kids forever, but they just haven't known him as long due to the assignment he went on years ago. Ever since he came back to Olivia's life, he has barely made any progress on his relationship with the twins. Instead, all they wanted to do was hang out with Spencer.
Elijah knows the twins are two of the most important people in Olivia's life, which is why he wants to have a good relationship with them. But they're not making it that easy for him. Every time he tries to hang out with them or even try to talk to them, their entire demeanor changes or they're already talking to Spencer. The twins do like Elijah and they do try to be nice to him, it just takes them a while to get used to him again. Elijah then continued, "Did they ever act sort of distant and shy towards Spencer when they first met him?"
"Well, no, but that's just because he just showed up out of the blue. I'm not even kidding. He just showed up to my place while Anna and the twins were there and Anna practically forced us all to hang out." Olivia explained to him. "I'm sure they'll warm up to you."
"How long did it take for the twins to warm up to Spencer?" Elijah then asked. Olivia tilted her head at him, knowing where the conversation is going, "It didn't take long because at the time, they were kids and liked everyone. Eli, why do you keep talking about the twins and Spencer? Are you jealous that they're closer to him?"
The more he thought about it, the more he realized he was. He understands Spencer and Olivia dated for years. Therefore, his relationship with the twins would be really great, but he was jealous. Elijah used to be close with the twins. He practically helped raise them with Anna and Olivia for a couple years. When he came back, it was clear to see that Spencer had filled in that spot. Maybe he was jealous because he knew Olivia and Spencer had a relationship so special, not even he could change it.
"No." He shook his head. "I'm glad that the twins have someone like him in their life."
"Good. Because you have nothing to worry about, I promise." Olivia told him.
He didn't quite know how well that promise would hold up. Truthfully, he did worry. Spencer and Olivia work with each other and see each other practically every day, they dated for almost 3 years and were very in love, and lately he's been speculating the fact that Spencer's still in love with her. He told himself that it was fine. But his insecurities got the best of him. "How long have you known Spencer?"
Olivia looked at him, hardly knowing his intentions with what he's asking, "Around 7 years." She slowly answered before asking him herself, "Okay, where are you going with this? Why do you keep asking all these questions?"
"I know you already told me about you and Spencer, and I trust and believe you when you say nothing's going on. I'm not blaming you, I'm not blaming him, but I just feel like every time he's here, things are off between us. I don't know, maybe I'm overthinking."
"Elijah, I'm sorry. I honestly don't know how I can fix it, but we can try." She assured him. "What do you want to do?"
"Well, I know how much you love Jennifer's Body, and it is Halloween, so why don't we watch it together?" He suggested, wrapping one arm around Olivia as she rested her head on his shoulder.
She gladly took his suggestion and they spent the night watching Jennifer Check devouring men while being in love with her best friend, Needy. Olivia did truly love that movie. When the movie was just about over, Olivia and Elijah fell asleep and Spencer had dropped off the twins at the house.
The twins went in by themselves as Spencer couldn't bear the thought of seeing Olivia and Elijah being domestic together — no matter what they were doing. Spencer felt guilty about it, but it was how he felt. He couldn't help it. When he arrived to his own home, he spent the final moments of his favorite holiday thinking: Maybe I'm still madly in love with Liv.
