❝ we need to find lindsey. ❞
SINCE OLIVIA'S VISIT to the prison to see Spencer, she's busied herself with the cases and paperwork the team worked on. While so, many things have happened with Spencer. He got beat up, his friend was killed in front of him, he was even forced to distribute drugs and ended up spiking them with poison. During one of their recent cases, Tara went to the prison to preform an updated cognitive interview on Reid. He realized he was the one who killed Nadie Ramos as he was drugged. When the team came back from their case and were settled down, Tara told them about the second interview they conducted, in which they find out it wasn't Mr. Scratch who framed him, but instead a woman.
And then, as the team finished working on a missing kids case, Emily and Fiona went to go visit Reid. He told them about his mom visiting him and his new findings. His new findings being that Lindsey Vaughn from Witness Protection has his mom and is pretending to be her nurse. Lindsey Vaughn and her best friend Katie Owen were abducted back in 2007 in Chula Vista, California. Katie had been killed, leaving Lindsey. Her father, Jack, an important witness from the the McCrellan Corporation, a predominantly Irish mob in Boston, was able to find her in the high school she attended.
Reid had followed him, trying to talk him down from killing the unsub. However, Lindsey begged her father to kill her abductor, saying that he tortured and killed Katie. Jack ultimately pulled the trigger, killing Lindsey and Katie's abductor in front of Spencer.
Emily explained the case to Olivia as JJ started to have a recollection of it. The caretaker Reid originally hired, Cassie, wasn't answering any calls, so Emily gave both Olivia and JJ the task of going over to Reid's apartment. "Went to voicemail again?" Olivia asked as she drove her and JJ to his apartment and JJ called Cassie.
"Yeah. You know, Cassie's a professional. She would never let her battery die." JJ stated.
Once they made it to his apartment building, JJ knocked on his door. "Diana? Cassie? It's Jennifer and Olivia." She said. After no reply, the blonde took out the spare keys Spencer had once given her as Olivia placed her hand on her holstered gun as precaution.
The two searched around the area as the green walls surrounded them with piles of books everywhere and the soft light shining from the windows and lamps left on created a dim lighting throughout the apartment. "Nobody's here." Olivia noted.
"No. This scene doesn't say abduction though." JJ sighed. "But under these circumstances, it definitely has to be." Olivia replied. "Yeah, we need to call Emily." JJ pulled out her phone.
As Emily briefed the team on recent events, they received a call from the two women. "Please tell me you have good news." Penelope hoped. JJ told, "Well, Diana and Cassie aren't here."
"There's no forced entry and no signs of struggle. And Cassie's car is gone." Olivia spoke. They heard Emily speak from the other end of the call, "Garcia, where are we on that ABP of her car?"
"I don't have anything yet."
"Okay. Also, search recent traffic in and out of Reid's apartment. Lindsey probably entered as Carol." She directed, Penelope responding with, "Copy, copy."
"Liv and I know Diana's routine. We'll hit up those places first." JJ announced as they hung up on the call.

After not having any luck with finding them, JJ and Olivia decided to drive back to the BAU. As she was driving, Olivia called Penelope. She answered, "Liv, JJ, you're on with Alvez." Olivia informed them, "Yeah, hey, we didn't have any luck finding Cassie or Diana."
"All right. Well, I'm at Cassie's car right now. Forensically, it's a dead end, behaviorally, we might have something. It's parked down the block from a high school." Luke told.
"A high school is where Jack Vaughn killed Lindsey's abductor in front of her and Spence." JJ recalled. Olivia suggested, "Placing the car there could be a taunt at us."
"That's what I'm thinking." Luke remarked.
Penelope chimed in, "I can look into that. I can. . . oh!" Her sudden silence caused JJ to question, "Garcia?" She responded back, "Oh, uh, uh, per Emily, I was supposed to look at the recent foot traffic in and out of Reid's building. There is no sign of Carol Atkinson, but a Jaime Lamantia keeps popping up. She lives in unit 26 down the hall from Reid. She paid 6 months of her rent up front in cash, and there's been not a peep from her since."
Luke asked, "How's Jaime connected to Lindsey?" Penelope frantically replied, "No, no, there's no connection. You don't understand. They're the same. They're the same person. Carol Atkinson is Jaime Lamantia who is Lindsey Vaughn."
"I'm 20 minutes from Reid's apartment." Luke said.
"We're 10." JJ told. With that, Olivia turned the SUV around, driving to Spencer's apartment building again. They put on their FBI vest and aimed their guns when they arrived to Lindsey's apartment.
To their dismay, the apartment seemed empty and a horrid smell immediately engulfed the two women. When stepping around the apartment more, they found a body laying on the floor with a pool of their own blood next to them. "It's Cassie." JJ identified. They lowered their guns, using their free hand to block their noses from smelling the appalling stench the deceased body created.
JJ approached the table placed in the middle of the room, "Olivia." She called. The brunette walked over to her, noticing the black and white photos taken of Reid from the course of around the last 6 months. They called Emily to inform her about it.
The two went back to the BAU, JJ staying behind as Olivia went with Luke to Beloit, Wisconsin to find Lindsey's father, Jack. They met up with him at a park. "Jack, I'm SSA Alvez, this is SSA Griffins, and we're with the BAU." Luke introduced.
Jack took off the sunglasses he wore to get a better look at the agents. "We need to find Lindsey." Olivia stated. He simply shrugged in response. "Jack, have you seen her?" Luke asked.
"No." He answered, "What is this about, anyway? I'm 10 years in, all of a sudden you guys want to talk to me."
"Lindsey's in trouble." Olivia told. Luke added, "Your gun was used in a murder in D.C. recently and others like it over the last 5 years." Olivia continued, "She must have hid it before WITSEC had the chance to find it."
Jack didn't reply and instead stayed quiet. Olivia sat down on the park bench next to him, "Look, I'm not gonna lie to you, this is bad for her. When we get Lindsey, and we will get her, she'll be in prison for life. But at least you can see her."
"She contacted you recently?" Luke interrogated. He sighed, "I talked to her about two months ago on the phone. She called me and she wanted to know about some. . . high-grade pharmaceuticals in Mexico, something I never heard of."
"What kind? What are they called?" Luke questioned. Jack slightly shook his head, "I don't know. It was like. . . sc-scope something, I don't know."
"Scopolamine and sevoflurane." Olivia voiced. Jack looked at her, "Yeah. How'd you know that?"
Luke and Olivia glanced at each other knowingly before Luke called Emily. They then made their way to the jet to return back to the BAU. When they arrived back, the sun was already down and everyone was exhausted. Olivia, Tara, Rossi, Luke, and JJ were in the bullpen's kitchenette briefing over all the information they've gathered throughout that day.
"Why would Scratch choose Lindsey?" Tara questioned, "I mean, her ties to Reid are distant." Luke replied, "Griffins and I, we kicked it around on the flight and we imagined that Scratch was digging further into Reid's past and he saw that Lindsey had become a contract killer. Realized she could get to him in a way that he couldn't."
Olivia spoke, "It may be logistical, too. Scratch has never run out of drugs before, but now he's a fugitive and might not be able to get them." JJ chimed in, "Well, Lindsey knows the border. She'd be a good drug mule."
Emily approached the five of them, "Good news, bad news. I am on the books first thing tomorrow with Judge Frost and AUSA Martinez."
"But all we have is a theory and no support from the brass." Rossi reminded. "That's never stopped us before." Emily remarked.
"I guess we have 12 hours to make an airtight case for you to bring to them." JJ said. Emily responded, "Yes. Not only that, we also need a paper trail."
"I'll put on the coffee." Rossi commented. Emily received a text notification and excused herself to go to her office. The five relocated to the round table where they had set up everything they needed to plan for Spencer's case Emily was going to present. Emily and Penelope entered the room, Emily telling the team, "We leave no stone unturned."
She opened the box she carried, handing out files to them. They worked for hours upon hours; flipping pages, reading through one file after another, making a timeline of Lindsey's whereabouts, searching on computers. It wasn't until Tara spoke up, grabbing everyone's attention, "Hey, guys. Okay, I got Carol Atkinson crossing the border at Los Indios."
Both Luke and Tara walked over to the map pinned against the glass pane that acted as their board. Tara resumed telling her findings, "There's a factory nearby that manufacturers non-FDA-approved seasickness tablets. Essentially, scopolamine pills."
"Los Indios is only a 40 minute drive to Matamoros." Luke told. Rossi remarked, "Looks like we've got Lindsey where we need her." Emily nodded, "Now we put the knife in her hand."
More restless hours have passed by. Both Olivia and JJ had to make calls to their children at home, notifying they may not be there for a while. Coffee cups and even more files were scattered around the room. For numerous hours now, everyone has been staring at screens, papers, and maps, jotting down helpful notes that may be useful later. The sun eventually arose, more light coming into everyone's vision.
JJ spoke up, "Woah, okay, guys, Jack's gun was used in Mexico the day before Nadie's murder." Tara tried to read from her file, "What, another cartel hit?" She shook her head, "No, the victim was a Victor Flores. He was a local real estate broker, a model citizen."
JJ handed the file to Rossi as she stood up, observing the board and Rossi read, "Point-blank. Back of the head, with a modified hollow-point bullet. That's Lindsey, all right."
"Why are we only hearing about it now?" Olivia asked. JJ replied, "Because it was in Monterrey. It's a different jurisdiction."
Tara stood up as well, "Okay, so, she crosses the border at Los Indios, which is very close to Matamoros, drives 3 hours west to Monterrey, kills Victor, and then drives 4 hours east to Matamoros?" She questioned.
"I mean, it's all possible within a day's drive." Olivia stated. "Sure, but why go through all the trouble?" Tara pondered. Emily added, "And why pick Victor Flores? It sounds too random to be random."
After taking a call, Luke walked back into the room, "Mexican authorities found an abandoned truck last week that matches the one Reid described. It was dumped two states over."
"Did it belong to a Victor Flores?" JJ asked. He replied, "Yeah, how'd you know that?"
"Lindsey killed him before Nadie. She must have stolen his truck, too." Rossi told. "All right, we'll, we're making some real headway here." Luke proudly said.
"Yeah, and it's great." Emily agreed, "Guys, don't get me wrong, but it's all circumstantial. Garcia, any luck finding Lindsey's prints from her WITSEC file?"
"I called in every favor I can think of and then some. It's gonna take me, like, 5 more hours to cut through all this red tape." Penelope told her. Emily sighed as she glanced at her watch, "I have to be at the courthouse in one." Garcia sighed as she began typing again and the rest of the team went back to work.
Emily was able to make it to her meeting with Judge Frost and AUSA Martinez. Despite Martinez's attempts into persuading the judge to think otherwise of Emily's statements, Judge Frost had declared Spencer Reid innocent. Olivia, JJ, Luke, and Penelope went to the prison to tell him the good news.
Olivia and Penelope waited outside the correctional facility as JJ and Luke were bringing him out. The two women smiled to themselves seeing him now as a free man again. Spencer approached them, happily hugging Penelope then Olivia. Afterwards, the five of them went back to the BAU, going over what they now know.
"So we know Lindsey convinced Scratch to run drugs across the border." Luke started. Rossi continued, "And that Lindsey's been operating from two locations; an apartment next to Reid and a house in southeast D.C." Olivia spoke, "And that's where we think she's keeping your mom."
"Scratch isn't afraid to plot an elaborate trap. I want a full breakdown of that house before we set one foot inside." Emily instructed.
Everyone departed and before Olivia and Spencer could make it out the room, Emily stepped in front of them. "Spencer, you can't officially go until you're reinstated." She told him. "So that includes going to my apartment, since it's a crime scene." He said. She nodded, "That's right. It's sealed and guarded by Metro P.D. But you are the resident. You got it?"
"Got it."
Emily then left the room as Spencer and Olivia stood there. She watched him just stare at the door. In prison, all the doors were opened for him. He's been in there so long, he just got used to it. "You all right?" She asked. He glanced at her and she told him, "Uh, it's open."
"Of course." He muttered, opening the door and the two of them walking out.
They arrived to Spencer's building, a few cops surrounding the area. When they went up to his apartment, a cop was already there and so was some police tape. They ducked underneath the tape as Olivia showed her badge to the cop, "He's the resident. He's just gonna grab a few things."
Spencer found his mom's scrapbook opened in front of the couch. It was the scrapbook his mom showed him the day the pipes bursted. He scavenged through the pages, noticing things wrong with the book. "What is it?" Olivia asked.
"This picture was on a different page." He told her. He grabbed a loose picture from the scrapbook, turning it over to see XX-XY written in red marker ink on the back. Olivia asked him, "Does that mean something to you?"
"Only the obvious, male and female chromosomes. Lindsey's way of telling us she's with Scratch." Spencer thought.
Meanwhile, the team had gone to Lindsey's house in southeast D.C. A man and a woman were in the house with their hands up. They turned around, revealing that they weren't Mr. Scratch and Lindsey. They told the team that a tablet awaited for them. When Emily turned on the tablet, she was greeted with the sight of Cat Adams. The video she made explained she was the one behind Nadie Ramos' murder and framing Spencer.
When Emily broke the news to him, he was sent to Mount Pleasant Women's Correctional Facility, accompanied by Olivia. Him and Cat were going to confront their "unfinished business", as Cat called it.
Olivia wasn't there when the team first met Cat, but all she needed to know about her was already dealt with the night it happened when Penelope called her about the entire thing. Holding Reid at gunpoint, threatening to kill the lives of innocent bystanders, making insensitive comments about his mom's Alzheimer's, taunting Garcia and the team. And now, she framed Reid for murder. All because he outsmarted her a year and a half ago. Olivia definitely despises Cat, just as much as the rest of the team does.
Spencer and Liv looked through the observation mirror, where Cat patiently waited for Reid. Olivia noticed his nervous behavior. He fidgeted with his fingers, he stared through the mirror anxiously before closing his eyes. Olivia assured him, "I'll be here the entire time."
He opened his eyes, walking into the interrogation room. Olivia followed as she shut the door behind them. He glared at Cat as she looked back at him and smiled softly.
"Spencie."
