𝒊. welcome back
❝ olivia griffins, it's been a while, hasn't it? ❞
"I KNOW, JUST give me some time. I don't want to tell them right away." Emily Prentiss told David Rossi as the two sat in — what might be — her new office at the BAU that was previously Aaron Hotchner's. Hotch had left the BAU to go in Witness Protection Program with his son, Jack, as the team's newest rival, Mr. Scratch targeted them. However, the rest of the team thought he was away for work.
During Hotch's departure, he had left some news for Emily. He wanted her to be the one to take his place as Unit Chief for the BAU. He believed she earned that title. Also, for the past few months Hotch has been in contact with former BAU agent, Olivia Griffins. He thought she'd be a tremendous amount of help with finding Mr. Scratch as her abilities only became better in London. Of course, Emily knew about the interactions between them a little, but never a lot of information about it. But Hotch left a note for Emily stating he wants her to finish what he started. He wanted her to let Olivia come back to the BAU if she was willing to.
Emily told Rossi about it, and he was ecstatic. He was going to miss Hotch. He was family, and seeing your family leave just hurts. But he felt joyous when Emily was given the option to take over and when Olivia might be coming back. The two were like daughters to him. "Emily, you have to tell them about Hotch. They'll be even more devastated if you wait."
She thought about it some more, "Fine, but Rossi, I don't even know if I want to come back for good yet. Or even as BAU Unit Chief, for that matter."
"You can take as much time as you need to figure that out. We'll support you, you know that." He told her.
"As for Olivia, I don't know either. She's doing well in Interpol, and she's hesitant about moving the twins again. I called her, but she hasn't called me back yet." Prentiss informed Rossi.
The two heard overlapping chatter coming from the bullpen. They stepped outside to see the team talking with one another, gleeful expressions present on their faces to contrast from Emily and Rossi's stoic ones. They looked at the two agents standing in front of Hotch's office, but still no Hotch. Rossi spoke up, "We need to talk ."
After setting their belongings down at their desks, the team followed the woman and Rossi to the conference room. Their eyebrows quirked in a confused expression. Prentiss took a deep breath before revealing the truth to them. The team took the news well, but they were still overwhelmed by his leave as he worked at the BAU for such a long time.
"But one of Hotch's final request was that Emily Prentiss becomes the BAU's new bureau chief." Rossi told.
"Thank the universe for silver linings." Garcia commented. Prentiss sighed, "Okay, I just heard about all of this myself a few minutes ago." New profiler, Luke Alvez, congratulated her, "Congratulations, Emily."
"This'll be good, right?" Spencer spoke. "You kidding me? This'll be great." JJ remarked. "I am really happy for you." Tara Lewis, a recent member, told Emily.
"Thank you guys, but I haven't exactly signed on yet." She explained.
"But you're gonna take it?" JJ questioned.
She shook her head a bit, "I don't know. But Hotch and I have actually been working to acquire another asset for this team. She's an old friend, but I don't really know if she'll take it, so I will get back to you guys on that."
With that, the team began working on a new case. Their minds occasionally wandered off to who the old friend could be. Was it Alex Blake, Kate Callahan, or even Elle Greenaway perhaps? And was Emily going to take this job? A million questions would constantly flood their brains.
Back in London, Olivia took the rest of the week off from work. For months now, she was offered the opportunity to come back to the BAU. A scenario she's often thought about during her stay in Europe. It would be great to see everyone again. Penelope and JJ have come to London to see her and Emily from time to time, her and Derek Morgan still talk to each other, and her and Rossi catch up sometimes. It was just Spencer she hasn't seen in a while. Since the dreadful memory of their breakup to be exact. They occasionally talked, mostly birthday messages and holiday wishes though. But she's missed everything about the BAU. How could she not say yes to coming back in a heartbeat?
It was just Oliver and Rosie she had to think about now. The twins are now almost 15-years-old, 12 when they moved to London. They're teenagers in high school now, they have friends that they don't want to leave, they were finally getting used to it. Can Olivia really just drag them out of there again? Plus, she doesn't have the best relationship with the twins as much as she used to. Oliver has been distant and quiet and Rosie would just snap at her. Sure they're just teenagers and that's normal for them, but they're barely who they were five years ago. Olivia wished she knew why they were acting hostile, but she had a few ideas. The anniversary of Anna's death had just passed and Spencer wasn't usually around anymore.
But the decision Olivia made was final. She's coming back to the BAU. The twins didn't really take the news well. Rosie stormed into her room and slammed the door, ignoring Liv the entire time. Oliver just glared at her and then left the living room without saying a word. She felt terrible she was moving them again, but she couldn't possibly leave two 15-year-olds by themselves in London. The following week was spent by the three moving back to D.C. Anna's mom and Olivia would pay the mortgage for Anna's house in order to keep her memory alive. So, when Olivia was moving back, she ended up moving into Anna's house.
Currently, the team was coming back from Delaware from a missing kids case. Olivia called Emily, saying she was at the BAU. It was very late at night as Olivia paced around the empty the bullpen, her nerves taking over her body as if this was her first day at the BAU again. The memories of Penelope Garcia calling her a model in Paris Fashion Week, the team introducing themselves, correcting Spencer Reid on a fact about her name. She grinned to herself, recalling those memories from five years ago, missing it dearly.
"Drinks at O'Keefe's!" Emily announced. The team stepped out of the elevator, noticing the pacing figure in the bullpen. The figure's back faced the team, so they couldn't quite make out exactly who it was, but it was just so familiar. Penelope walked out of — what she called her lair — and agreed on the plans, "Huzzah, I'll go get my things."
The energetic blonde turned to where everyone's eyes were facing, now looking at the figure in front of them. "Anybody know who this is?" Luke asked.
Luke and Penelope opened the glass doors as the figure turned around. Garcia immediately squealed ecstatically at who it was and walked over to embrace the girl in a hug. "Olivia, my little angel! Oh my god!" The two smiled before letting go. "Penelope, my god given miracle, hi!"
Spencer watched the two interact, his eyes never leaving from Olivia. She didn't seem to notice as she was greeting everyone else. He hadn't seen her in almost three years, and when he did, she looked absolutely stunning. She had told him that their breakup will be the best for them, and for her it seemed like it. But for Spencer, he has been a mess ever since. Day by day, he just got better at hiding it, and did eventually get better emotionally and mentally. He was just glad to see at least she was doing well, even though she practically had the same experience as Spencer.
"Liv!" JJ exclaimed, her turn to embrace the Griffins girl. Afterwards, Rossi greeted her, "Olivia Griffins, it's been a while, hasn't it?"
"Yes, indeed." She answered, "I think you'd be glad to know my Italian is getting better. Cosa pensi? Sto rilevando alcune cose." She said, translating to What do you think? I've been picking up on some things.
"Molto buona!" He complimented in Italian, meaning Very good!
The last person who stepped up to greet her again was Spencer. He gave her a tight lipped smile and a wave. The team knew about their breakup and therefore, found them a little awkward when seeing each other again. The news of the two breaking up shocked everyone who knew, considering they thought they were such a good couple. Emily took the liberty of introducing Tara Lewis and Luke Alvez to Olivia. "Liv, this is Dr. Tara Lewis and SSA Luke Alvez. Tara, Luke, this is Olivia Griffins. She used to work in the BAU years ago."
"Pleasure to meet you both." She smiled. "Likewise." Tara replied.
"We're going to O'Keefe's, wanna come?" Penelope asked her. "Yes, I'd be happy to tag along." Olivia told her.
"Welcome back, kid." Rossi patted her shoulder. The team left the FBI headquarters after gathering their things and they went to the bar, catching up with Olivia. She was able to get to know Tara and Luke as well as catching up on some things she's missed during her time out of the BAU.
Her and Spencer didn't talk much, which was understandable, but she just wished that maybe he went up to go talk to her. Even if it was an irrelevant topic. Meanwhile, Spencer's gaze would shift towards Olivia every now and then. Not much about her changed, except for maybe the fact that her face matured over the years. But she was still the same Olivia Spencer fell in love with. She still had the same smile he loved seeing and loved being the cause of. He missed her, which is why seeing her again hurt. He wondered if she felt the same seeing him.
