He was calling her name, had been for the past five minutes. Eventually he had to get up out his chair, but Lilah really was clinging to him like a koala bear. And she had fallen asleep. A miracle.
She was sitting in his lap, her arms wrapped around his torso, her cheek resting on his shoulder. Neither of them knew how they had gotten into this position, something that had to do with her being cold and him offering his arms as a blanket.
He didn't want to wake her, but they needed to start their training, the training she had agreed to participate in the day before.
Lilah invited Harrison to come along with them, but he refused because apparently Tom got all mean and serious, and made him do drills. Which wasn't true, it was just that the one time Harrison had gone to work out with him, he was in a bad mood.
That didn't mean he wasn't going lay back on Lilah.
But at that moment, it took all he could not to smother her face with kisses. Her cheeks looked so soft, the small freckles that he hadn't noticed were there before—glowed in the late morning sunlight, causing them stand to out like stars in a dark sky. Her lips were parted, pressed against his neck, making the hairs on his arms to stand up.
She shifted in her sleep, brows scrunching with the movement, and her head lifted up off his shoulder.
"Hey man." She yawned, retreating her arms from around him to rub her eyes. "Sorry I fell asleep on you. You're just a really good pillow."
"Thank you?" A smile tugged at the corner of his lips. "But you don't need to apologize, it's good that you got some sleep, for once. And you're really warm." Heat creeped up the side of his neck, where Lilah's lips had brushed against just seconds prior.
A low chuckle. "Yeah well, I didn't get any sleep last night, so thanks for holding me."
Worry flashed in his eyes, but he pushed it down and changed the subject. "Um, it's almost time to go, so you need to get dressed."
"What's wrong with what I'm wearing?" she asked, crossing her arms.
Tom looked her up and down, slowly examining her clothes. She was still sitting on his lap, one thigh on either side of his legs. "You're wearing Spiderman pajama bottoms that are most definitely are not yours," he glared at her, "And, you're going to need to borrow some shoes because converse will not work for the physical movement you'll be enduring today." He gave her a smug smile and she bit the inside of her cheek.
"Okay... but we're getting coffee before because I haven't had any for the past week because the lady kicked me out when I tried to order some." She poked his chest, "So you get to order it please."
Tom rolled his eyes. "Fine. But when they try me for treason in front of the Queen, I'm blaming you."
When Lilah grinned and left his lap to run upstairs and get dressed, Tom felt like a bucket of ice water had been dumped on his body. The warmth that curled up in his chest when she was asleep in his arms disappeared.
The realization had hit him like a tidal wave yesterday. Lilah wouldn't be there forever. She wouldn't be there to fall into his lap, go on adventures to the library with him, it wasn't endlessly that they would be making these movies together. But he wanted forever with her.
So his solution was the offer for her to stay with him for just a while longer, extend her stay. Even if it wasn't forever, at least it was a small addition to the little time they had together.

"I regret drinking that coffee," Lilah muttered.
Tom chuckled, "Relax, we're only doing a few line sprints to warm up and then going to the gym."
Lilah whipped her head to look at him, shock momentarily crossing her face. "Tom, do you even see how long that runway is?? It's almost a mile long."
"A mile and a half, actually."
She clenched her jaw. "Not helping your case."
He had taken her to an abandoned aeroplane runway, that was about a five minute drive form his parents house. He said that he usually came here when he needed to warm up, or just go for a quick run. But from where she was standing, Lilah didn't think it would be a quick run at all.
A year ago, Lilah had stayed in shape pretty easily, went out for runs every night when she couldn't sleep, did various abdominal exercises—but since then, she didn't really have the time for physical activity. And it wasn't that she had gained weight, it was that she was losing it. The muscles that she built up and worked for, slowly faded away into just... skin.
So it was good that Tom convinced her to get into training, but that also meant he had noticed her steadily plummeting weight loss.
Her cheeks colored at the thought.
It was enough to convince her to at least try and run the platform. She scanned the giant field they stood in, the sun was high in the air, bright in the early afternoon. Surrounding them was bright green grass, abruptly stopping with the leveled and outstretched concrete surface that was the runway.
She sighed. "Alright, let's go."
Lilah was wildly out of shape, to say the least. And Tom wasn't any help at all.
If she was being honest, she could be coughing up blood and he would still make her run. Harrison was wise not to come along with them today. Tom was obviously dropping back on his pace to run alongside her, which she didn't like. It was a sort of pity, worse than having him yards ahead, leaving her behind.
But mercifully he didn't say anything, even when her breaths were getting dangerously fast. She didn't want him to feel bad for her.
In total they ran once to the end of the runway, once back, and were currently a few yards away from the start once again. If Tom hadn't slowed down for her, he would've been on his fifth line at best.
When they reached the end, Tom told her they were finished for the day, to drink some water, and get in the car to go the gym. She scowled at him and crossed her arms. "Like hell I'll be doing more after whatever that was."
He just threw her a smirk and climbed in the car.
Lilah rolled her eyes and followed after him. "So," she said as she got in the car, "is this going to become a regular thing?"
Tom backed up out of the field and drove off. "If you mean you're going to start getting up at six and coming with me here every morning, then yes."
She glared at him and complained some more about how she didn't want to wake up that early, that having to do even more physical activity after this run was absurd—to which he responded with: "If you don't get up early with me, I'll jump on top of you. Today was an exception because you looked too cute for me to wake you up. And more physical activity, Lilah, is kind of what's keeping you from losing your job. Because if your job is to be a superhero," he smiled at her, "you've got to at least look like one."
"I liked you when you better when you let me do fun stuff," she muttered.
"I'm not letting you do anything, or not letting you do anything," Tom said. "You could jump out of the car if you wanted and walk home, you could ask me to stop the car and I would drive you back. It's your choice, I'm just encouraging you." He shrugged.
Something in Lilah's heart opened up at his words, but she quickly built back up those invisible walls that had slowly been coming down in the past week. She cleared her throat and didn't talk to Tom for the rest of the car ride.

"Okay, I would suggest that you stretch your legs first so that tomorrow you aren't too sore," Tom told her.
"First of all," she raised a finger, "that's what she said. Second, is anyone else even here?"
He rolled his eyes at her suggestive comment, but thought, two could play at that game. "No, nobody else is here. Although usually Cal is here in the early morning."
She observed the building they stood in. It was an empty gym, that's all there really was to it. It was clean, though. A sparring ring, that they wouldn't be using today, a few treadmills, also unnecessary because they already ran, and lastly, what they would be using, the punching bags and pull up bars. Lilah was excited about that last one, since she was particularly skilled in that area.
On the drive over, Tom said that Cal was the owner of the building, and that they had been friends on the set of one of his movies, back when he was a teenager.
They walked along the cold concrete floors, all the way to the middle of the gym. Tom put his hands on his hips and said, "Okay, sit down and just... stretch. I don't know."
Lilah did as he said, and he sat down across from her, reaching for his toes. She echoed his movements. After ten minutes of silently copying Tom, which included various stretches of the leg, arm, and core area, Lilah finally spoke up.
She stopped her stretches and picked up her discarded water bottle to take a sip. "What is your goal here?"
"My goal here, is to get you drenched in sweat, and really sore tomorrow. Come on, we're gonna go do some core exercises." He winked at her.
Lilah choked on what could have been a laugh or cough, spilling water all over chin. She caught a glimpse of Tom's smirk and resisted the urge to strangle him.
He got to his feet and told Lilah to follow him. She did, wiping the water off her chin with the back of her hand, glaring at the back of Tom's head. He pointed to a spot on the ground, where soft black mats laid.
"The hell am I supposed to do with those? Throw them at your head?" Her eyes lit up. "Please please please let it be that."
"No. This," he crossed his arms, "is where you do sit ups. For twenty minutes."
"Straight?"
"No, gay." He shook his head and muttered, "What have you done to my brain Angelo?"
She grinned at him and laid down, her back flat against the ground. "Can you hold my feet down?" she whined.
A muscle flickered his jaw. "No."
Lilah attempted to do a sit up, but fell back against the mat almost immediately. She sighed, wishing she was under the covers of a quilt reading the newest novel on her list, drinking a hot cup of coffee.
"Try again," Tom pressured her.
She propped herself up on her elbows. "You sound so confident, yet you haven't even showed me how to do one."
He huffed and laid down beside her, not breaking eye contact with her as he crossed his arms over his chest in an X, and lifted his upper body up a few inches, then sank back down onto the ground. "It's really not that complicated."
Lilah sucked on her teeth, picked an invisible string on the hem of her shirt, then laid back down, and tried again. And again. And again. She was terrible at it, her form wobbly, her finger tips shaking, but she did it over and over, until Tom finally stopped her. She sat up, arms wrapped around her bent legs.
"You're really bad at this."
She gave him a sweet smile. "Thank you."
"We can try again tomorrow, but you need a different... core exercise." His mouth quirked to the side.
Lilah put her head in between her knees, her shoulders shaking with laughter. "You've got to stop with that."
"Stop with what?" he asked. Ever the innocent actor.
Lilah rolled her eyes and stumbled to her feet, a drop of sweat running down the side of her head. Tom led her over to the metal pull up bar, and just stood there, expecting her to do something.
"I swear, you're the worst trainer ever- what am I supposed to do here?" she said. "Hang like a monkey?"
"Well you need to do your core exercises, so yes. Hang like a... monkey. And not just for my own personal enjoyment, you hang by your legs and then lift your body up. It's as simple as that," Tom shrugged his shoulders.
"Okay you keep saying that, but it's not simple at all." Lilah made a face.
He took a step closer to her, but they were still a few feet apart. "You don't get up on that bar and do at least... maybe you could manage five sit ups, then I'll have to drag you into the sparring ring."
Her fists clenched at the implied insult, and she shot back, "I'm starting to want you to."
"To what?"
"Let's go." She threw her arms up in the air. "Why not? You've basically been yelling at me all day long-"
"I have not been yelling at you!" he yelled.
"-and I'm kind of ticked off right now. So let's go into the ring, so I can beat your ass and punch you in the face."
Tom raised his eyebrows at her and took another step closer. "I'll punch you back."
She tilted her head up, so close to his face that if she were to sway, their lips would brush against each other. "Good."
She backed up towards the ring, her fingers still clenched into fists. She was getting worked up, Tom had been pushing her all day long, and even after all that running she still had energy to work off. Taking it out on her closest friend most likely wasn't the right option, but he seemed like he wanted to work off some steam too.
Lilah ducked under the thick rope, climbing into the ring while rolling her neck, pure anger running though her blood. Out of the corner of her eye she saw Tom wrapping his hands in gauze, so she did the same.
They turned to face each other, then strutted to the middle of the matted area, not breaking eye contact. Tom held his fists up, feet at ten and four. So he leans on his left foot, Lilah thought. He didn't have his knees lined up with his feet, a common mistake. And, his shoulders were hunched in the slightest, making them uneven with where his feet were placed.
A smirk crept up on her lips. This would be too easy.
"Don't worry, I'll go easy on you," he winked. She wanted to punch him right in the mouth at those words.
As she had planned, when Lilah 'accidentally' glanced to the left, not yet in her fighting stance, that's when Tom threw his punch, right in the cheek.
But she dodged it, dipped her head under his arm to strike him in the stomach with her right hand. As he doubled over, that's when she hooked her foot around his right—the one he wasn't aware was a weak spot—and yanked.
Tom staggered back when his right leg was pulled out from under him. And then he fell right on his ass.
Lilah cackled, holding her stomach with laughter and tipping her head back.
Tom growled, about half way to his feet when he came running for her, then grabbed her legs and knocked her to the ground. While she was stick in a state of shock, he pinned her arms out to her side and sat on her thighs.
She peered up at him, opening her mouth to say something, but then closing it again. He cocked his head to the side. All she said was, "You're a lot heavier than you look, Thomas."
She wriggled under him, trying to get out of his grasp. But she couldn't move while his hands still held her wrists down, although if she really wanted, she could just ask him to get off of her and he would. But she didn't.
"Not so strong now, are you? Regret your decision? Maybe- oh hold on, my nose itches," Tom said, releasing her right arm to scratch his nose. Lilah gave him a confused look, but didn't wait for him to grip her wrist again before she balled her hand into a fist and punched him in the eye. "Ow what the fuck-"
His other hand released her left arm to hold his eye, and she gritted her teeth as her body sat up, pushing Tom's body off of her's in the action. Tom stopped caring about his eye when he looked into Lilah's. The stars had all winked out, and filled with just pure night sky.
He couldn't stop the fist that hooked up and hit him in the jaw, but to his credit, he did land a few blows to her face.
In one swift movement, she was the one who had him pinned to the ground then, her legs straddling his hips, hands going to grip his forearms. He glanced at her right hand, still wrapped in the gauze, but there was a red stain on them. Blood. His blood.
He whipped his head to stare at her, wide eyed. She was studying his face, even though they were only inches apart. Her forehead gleamed with sweat, her lips were pursed, the air coming out of her nose just brushed over his cheek.
Lilah was examining his features, schooling her own into neutrality. She looked at him sternly. His chest was rising and falling, as was her's. She was about to say something when blood started to splatter onto his cheek. It was her blood, coming from her nose. From when Tom had punched her, in self defense.
Quickly, she climbed off of his body and stood up, holding her hand to her nose. Sure enough, red blood covered her fingertips.
Tom shot to his feet. "Oh my god, Lilah I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to hit you that hard..." He stopped when a smile started to spread on her mouth. Although she winced when she noticed it was split, and there was blood coming out of there too.
Lilah met his eyes, scanning his face for any blood. There was none, but she could see the bruises starting to form on his jaw and eye. Her smile grew. "Same time tomorrow?"
Tom chuckled, then slung an arm around her shoulder. "You're insane," he said.
They walked alongside each other all the way to the car, both agreeing that they had had enough for the day. Before they got in the car though, Lilah smacked a big fat kiss on Tom's cheek.
He snarled and wiped it off with the back of his hand, saying that the bruises were enough punishment already.

"I think it's good that there was a little bloodshed today," Lilah said, shifting in the bed to look at Tom.
"Bloodshed? Really?"
"Yeah. Things were getting a little too chummy around here."
When they got back to Tom's house, his mum fired questions at them; why Tom's jaw looked like it had gotten run over by a truck, why there was blood coming out of Lilah's lip, nose, and temple, where they had been for three hours, if they had joined the mob- things like that.
And because Harry fell asleep on the couch, Lilah had nowhere to sleep, so Tom told her to just come sleep upstairs with him. Even though she doubted she would get any sleep at all that night, even though she was so desperately tired wanted to tell him to just let her lay on the floor, she accepted. Mostly because the only time she had actually gotten any sleep was when she slept in Tom's bed that first night.
So now they laid next to each other, Lilah as far away as she could get from his body without falling off the bed.
"What do you mean chummy?" Tom asked, meeting her eyes.
Lilah responded, "With all the hugs and cuddling and nicknames..." she shivered and looked back up at the ceiling. "It was gross. Too much intimacy."
"You think me hugging you is gross?"
"No, I love it when you hug me," she said. His eyes softened, unlike the fire that had been there when she punched him in the socket. "I feel... safe when you hug me. But that's probably because I haven't felt safe for more than ten years." Tom was watching her, she could feel his stare. "There's a wall that I built up when I was like eight years old," she shook her head, "and I think I finally let it down around you because I know you make me feel safe, and that you won't hurt me."
She snorted, "Which doesn't really make any sense because you bloodied up my face pretty good today."
"No, I get what you mean," Tom said quietly. "Is that why... why you won't let anybody else touch you?"
Lilah thought about it for a moment, then nodded. Perhaps that was the reason. She heard Tom's hand slide along the mattress, then felt his palm against hers, their fingers interlace. She took a deep breath through her mouth and tried not to think too much about it.
When she looked over at him ten minutes later, he was asleep. And the light brown ring around his eye was only getting worse. She felt kind of bad.
When she woke up in the morning, after a full nights sleep, his warm hand was still clasped in hers.
