Chapter Thirteen

"You have to understand, I was doing what I thought was best for my son. But i'm done being afraid. Lucas, the one that I knew was sweet, charming. Dodge, that was my nickname for him because he was on the fencing team. It's a little cheesy I know, but now that name means something completely different to me." Elle spoke to the Locke siblings that night as they sat in the living room.

"What happened to him?" Tyler questioned her.

"The night after graduation, we had a sleep over here in the basement. But Randle wanted to go down to the caves. A few weeks earlier we had found this door down there, your Father became obsessed with getting it open. And we all went because the keys had only brought good things into our lives." Elle spoke as she looked between them within each word.

"How do you remember anything? The keys, the magic, we thought after you become a adult you forget." Kinsey said to her from where she sat between Tyler and Harvest.

"We found a way to remember." Elle said as Tyler and Kinsey shared a look.

"How, Elle?" Harvest asked, less harsh and pushy then her sister asked moments before.

"After Randle open the black door there was this bright blue light, then these things shot out from the other side like bullets, glowing bullets. I saw one of them hit Lucas, Randle and Lucas managed to get the door closed again. And Lucas said he was fine and he did seem fine but later.... I think it's easier if I just show you." Elle said as her voice began to breath, clearly upset over the memory. She held up the head key before bringing it to the back of her neck, Elle was suddenly across the room and her body was limb in the chair.

"I'll never get use to that." Harvest mumbled as she rubbed her arms that had chill bumps.

"Rufus and Bode, you two stay here. Keep watch, we won't be long." Elle said to her son and Bode as the three older sibling hurried to Elle as they walked through her door.

"Was I the only one that didn't know we had a basement?" Harvest asked as the four began walking down the steps.

"Yeah, you were definitely the only one." Kinsey said to her as Harvest waved her off and trailed close behind Elle.

"We got back from the caves later that night, tried to get some sleep after opening the black door. And that's when it started with Lucas." Elle spoke as they got to the bottom, seeing their Dad and Elles friend group all asleep on the floor.

"Hand it over, I know you have it." Lucas demanded as he looked at Mark.

"Lucas?" a younger Elle asked as she sat up from her sleeping position.

"Give me the omega key." Lucas demanded as his voice got deeper looking at Mark.

"He's acting's crazy." Mark said as he looked to Elle as their other friends began to wake up.

"I know you have it."

"Dude just calm down."

"Lucas! What are you doing?" Elle shouted as Lucas wrapped his hands around Marks neck. The scene went on, showing Kim hitting her head on the wall and Lucas snapping Jeff's neck. Randle then jumped out and hit Lucas over the head multiple times.

"Duncan saw what happened, we had no choice. We had to remove his memories, put them some place he wouldn't find them." Elle spoke as the memory disappeared, leaving them all speechless.

"The tree." Tyler finally spoke up.

"When Lucas got hit by whatever came across the other side, some kind of demon attached itself to him. We created a story about how our friends had died, it was easier than trying to explain the truth. No one would have believed what really happened, so we told everyone we went down to the caves and our friends drowned. And their bodies washed out to sea and they were battered on the rocks. We divided up the remaining keys and we made a pact to protect them and never use them again. Randle took the Omega keys, Erin took the anywhere, and Mark took the match stick key. Mark hid the rest in the house, he was the most trustworthy of us all so it made sense for him to know where they were. That's why he killed himself, so no one could ever get inside his head, to protect the keys." Elle said to them as they were on the docks again, the light breeze flew through Harvest's bright locks.

"What about you? What did you take?"Kinsey asked as she looked to Elle once again.

"The identity key and the echo key." Elle informed them as Harvest ran cold for some reason at the words Identity Key.

"The echo key?" Tyler asked her confused.

"It can bring people back, but not in the way I thought." Elle shook her head and Harvest frowned and gave her arm a small squeeze.

"I tried to move on with my life, but I couldn't. I couldn't let go of Lucas, other peoples lives get bigger and fuller but I just felt like I was disappearing. And last year I hit my breaking point, and I came to the well house." Elle went on as she lead them to the well house infront of the Locke mansion. The scene fell out horribly, Elle used her echo key to bring Lucas back but he was demanding and pushy, wanting her to get him the anywhere key.

"I'm so sorry Elle. I could never imagine the pain you felt after losing someone you love to stupid Dodge, I hope you never have to feel that again." Harvest said to her and she hugged her tightly, Elle wiped her eyes as she hugged the redhead back.

"That thing wasn't Lucas, I didn't know that when I called out his name I wasn't bringing him back I was bringing back a demon that possessed him when he died." Elle spoke as they all walked away, clearly feeling guilty of the whole situation.

"You couldn't have known." Kinsey tried to reassure her as Elle turned back to them.

"The keepers, we made a pact. I broke that pact, this is all my fault. I just thought I could have him back, we should go." Elle said with sadness and sorrow laced within her voice, leading the three oldest Locke siblings back to the door.

When they got back inside Elle used the key to go back to her original body, the group all sitting down quickly.

"When Bode met Dodge he was a she." Kinsey said in confusion as she looked to Elle who nodded.

"She can use the identity key to transform into any form she thinks will be most useful." Elle said as Harvest frowned her eyebrows and nodded her head, not thinking anything of it even though she should have.

"So she really is just a echo? How do we get rid of it?" Kinsey asked, trying to think one step ahead.

"It can't be killed by normal means, believe me i've tried. But it can be trapped, in the well house. The problem is getting it in there." Elle spoke up as Bode jumped in quickly.

"We have a way." He said while holding up the crown of shadows key as Elle gasped and took it from him.

"It's the key to the crown of shadows, whoever wears the crown can create and control powerful shadows. It'll do whatever they want." Elle informed them as Tyler looked back at Harvest who was still trying to wrap her head around it all.

"Like force a demon echo into a well house?" Bode asked as Elle nodded her head.

"Exactly like that." the skinny woman informed him making Bode smile.

"Do you know where the crown is?" Harvest asked, joining the conversation once again.

"It's back at my place, i'll get it." Elle said as she grabbed her bag.

"We'll be here waiting." Kinsey informed her as Elle nodded before her and Rufus left the mansion, hopefully to be arriving back soon.
