vii. the tour
THE JEEP STARTED DOWN THE METAL TRACK AND MOVED TOWARDS A GIANT WOODEN DOORS, PROUDLY DISPLAYING THE WORDS; JURASSIC PARK. It looked like something from an ancient tribe or a movie set.
"What they got in there? King Kong?" Ian sarcastically commented, straining his neck to look up at the sign through the sunroof as Robyn chuckled. The doors groaned open slowly as the first car approached and then closed again after the second car.
"Wouldn't surprise me," She said. "They spared no expense, of course."
"The voice you're hearing now is Richard Kelly," John spoke through the speakers of each car. "We spared no expense!"
Robyn and Ian turned to each other with surprised grins and laughed at the odd coincidence. "If you look to the right, you'll see a herd of the first dinosaurs on our tour, called Dilophosauras-"
"Dilophosauras?!"Robyn questioned with a gasp. She and the others in the car practically pushed their faces to the windows to see one of the poisonous carnivores. As the tour moved on, the groups grew disappointed with the lack of Dilophosauras herds. Not a single tree or bush moved, indicating to the scientists that they were nowhere near the tour trail.
The vehicles moved on much to Robyn's disappointment. The two vehicles come to a stop outside the massive fence that serves as the enclosure for the Tyrannosaur Paddock. Everyone looks out of the window in anticipation of spotting the king of the dinosaurs. Alan had crawled between Ian and Robyn to get to the back of the car. With no sign of the deadly dinosaur, Ian began to speak.
"God creates dinosaurs. God destroys dinosaurs. God creates man. Man destroys God. Man creates dinosaurs," Ian spoke, leaning over Robyn's shoulder to see out of the window on her side.
"Dinosaurs eat man... woman inherits the earth," Ellie smiled, crawling over to the driver's seat to get a better look at the enclosure. Robyn chuckled at her friend's words.
"We'll try to tempt the Rex now. Keep watching the fence," A voice over the speakers spoke. Turning back to the enclosure, they saw a white goat rising up from a cage below the ground. The cage lowers leaving the goat tethered to a post - making it an easy meal for the dinosaur.
"Ugh, not again," Robyn shuddered, not wanting to see the goat be eaten in front of her. Ian's arm swung around her shoulders, his thumb rubbing the flannel over it to comfort her.
"T-Rex doesn't want to be fed, he wants to hunt. Can't just suppress sixty-five million years of gut instinct," Alan said. The goat laid down and the guests all sat back in frustration. They hadn't seen a single dinosaur on this tour yet and it was disappointing for everyone.
With a groan, Ian pushed himself up and peered into the camera at the front of the car. "Uh, now, eventually you do plan to have dinosaurs on your dinosaur tour, uh, right?" He licked his lips as he fumbled over his words. "Hello? Hello? Yes?" He blew a breath over the lens, knowing that John was watching and would get under his skin.
Robyn pulled on his jacket to pull him back to his seat just as Alan climbed back over to the driver's seat. "Don't be mean. He can't control where they are, can he?"
Ian smirked down at the woman, his arm going around her shoulders once more. "Yes, but, uh, he said he did, didn't he? The Tyrannosaur doesn't obey any set patterns or park schedules. The essence of chaos."
Robyn furrowed her brows, peering up at the man next to her. "I still don't understand the chaos theory just yet."
Ian grinned, leaning into his seat a bit further. "Oh, uh, it simply deals with unpredictability in complex systems," His thumb tapped away at her shoulder. "The shorthand, uh, uh, is the Butterfly Effect. A butterfly can flap its wings in Peking, and in Central Park, you get rain instead of sunshine," Robyn breathed out a breath she didn't think she was holding in.
She waved her hand over her head, indicating that the explanation went right over her head. Ian chuckled, his fingers playing with the blonde hair that rested over Robyn's shoulder.
"Did I go too fast? I did a fly-by. "Hey, um, Dr Sattler, would you, uh, would you pass me that cup of water? We're gonna conduct an experiment," Ellie passed him the glass of water and turned in her seat to watch what Ian was doing, not understanding his field of work either. "We should be still but the cars bouncing up and down," he laughed, whilst imitating the car's movements dramatically. "But - but that's okay. It's just an example. Ok, put your hand flat like a hieroglyphic," Ian spoke, whilst helping Robyn straighten her hand the way he wanted. "Now, let's say a drop of water falls on your hand," Ian grinned, steadying her hand then grabbing the cup of water. "Which way will the drop roll off? Which finger?"
"Uh, thumb, I'd say," Robyn tilted her head and Ellie nodded, watching Ian dip his finger into the water. Ian placed the drop of water on Robyn's knuckle and the three scientists watch the drop roll backwards down her hand.
"Ah-ha! Okay, freeze your hand," Ian ordered, his fingers rubbing away the trail that the water left on Robyn's hand with a smirk. "Don't move. I'll do the same thing, start with the same place again. Which way now?"
Robyn looked into his hazel eyes, noticing the smirk still set over his mouth. "Same way, surely," Her brows rose with a teasing smile.
"Same way?" Ian checked with a smile, dipping his finger back into the water. Robyn nodded as Ian placed the droplet in the exact same place. However, this drop rolled down the mount of her thumb. Ian gasped, bringing a smile to Robyn's lips. "It changed. Why? Because of tiny variations - the orientation of the hairs on your hand, the amount of blood distending your vessels... imperfections in the skin..."
"Imperfections in the skin?" Robyn teased.
Ian grinned, stroking the back of her hand gently. "Microscopic, microscopic," he assured, enclosing her hand in both of his tenderly, looking deep into Robyn's brown eyes. "That never repeat and vastly affect that outcome. That's... what?"
"Unpredictability," Robyn answered, feeling proud that she finally understood the concept of chaos. Ian was a much better teacher than her ex.
Before they could continue, Alan grabs their attention by opening his door and jumping out, walking into the grassy plains. "There! There, look at this! See? I'm right again. Nobody could predict that Dr Grant would jump out of a moving vehicle," Then Ellie jumped out, calling his name. "See? Again," he spoke with a laugh. "That's, uh, Chaos Theory. Anyway, did you, uh, understand what I was saying?" He chuckled.
Robyn nodded. "Yeah, thanks, uh, the example was very useful."
Ian smirked. "Glad I could - I could be of service," Just as he finished his sentence, both cars came to a halt. "Guess we're getting out now, huh?"
Robyn chuckled at Ian's laziness. "Come on, who knows? It'll probably be exciting," she gently yanked on his leather jacket cuff and pulled him out of the vehicle after her. "Hey, kids!" Robyn yelled over to Tim and Lex. Both ran up to her and grabbed her hands, and began to run off in the direction that Alan went in. Soon Alan stopped in his tracks, telling everyone to stay put as he went on.
Tim huffed and went after him even though Robyn tried to keep a hold of his hand. "Shit," she whispered, going after him.
