vi. the kids
THE GROUPS ALL BUT RUSHED OUT OF THE SECLUDED DINING AREA ONCE AFTER JOHN. "Isn't this everyone?" Robyn questioned to no one in particular, picking up her camera from the table and following behind the group.
Ian heard and slowed his pace to walk alongside her. "I, uh, guess not. Who else do reckon he's got roped into this?" He joked.
Robyn snorted, her head falling back, her blonde locks falling behind her back. "Hopes it's not another chaotician. Don't think we could handle another one of you around."
Ian smirked. "You won't be saying that when you met my kids."
Robyn's brows rose in surprise. "You have kids?"
Ian nodded his head. "Three, actually. A girl and two, uh, boys. All lovely kids, really. I don't see my boys much though. Uh, their mother moved them all to a different country."
"And your daughter? Do you and her mother live together?" Robyn asked. An odd heaviness weighed over her head and she felt her heart clench as she asked the question. She didn't know why but she tried to ignore it.
Ian chuckled. "Uh, no. She ditched us when she gave birth to Kelly. So it's just me and her."
She felt relieved for some reason. Why though? "That's lovely, Ian. I love kids. I always wanted a daughter - like a mini-me," Robyn grinned, thinking about the daughter she hadn't had. "I would teach her all about animals and dinosaurs too, but you know, if she wanted to play with Barbies, then who am I to say no."
Ian grinned down at the blonde Australian. "You got it all figured out then, hey, Robbie."
The blonde shrugged. "A woman can hope," She chuckled, fiddling with her camera lens. "Hey, stop right there," she ordered Ian who immediately spotted in his tracks.
"What, uh, is it? Is it a spider or - or something? If so, get it off me," Ian calmly spoke but he seemed stressed by Robyn's order.
"No, silly," Robyn giggled, lifting her camera to her eye. "Smile!"
Ian rolled his eyes playfully. "I can't smile on demand, sweetheart."
Robyn pouted. "For me?" With another playful eye roll, Ian grinned, holding up a peace sign in the air.
"Good enough," she teased with a smirk.
Ian gasped dramatically. "How dare you?! You seen this face? It's worthy of Vogue."
Robyn snorted loudly, quickly covering her mouth in the process. Before she could reply, Jimmy shouted for her. "Robbie, look who it is!"
"Robbie?" Ian narrowed his eyes as he quietly repeated the name that Jimmy used. Little did he know, Robyn was thinking the same - only just realising Jimmy's odd behaviour when Robyn is by Ian's side.
Not choosing to dwell on it for long, she looked to where John was sat on the steps and saw two kids sat with him. An older blonde girl aged around 12-years-old and a younger brunet boy aged around 9-years-old. Robyn gasped happily at the sight of the two familiar faces.
"Robyn!" The two children shouted in glee when they saw the blonde woman. Running towards her, they crushed her into a tight bone-crushing hug.
"Lex! Tim! I've missed you guys," Robyn laughed, reciprocating the embrace but squeezing them to her.
"We haven't seen you in forever!" Lex looked up at her with happy green eyes. Lex always loved Robyn for her intelligence. Robyn was the person that urged Lex to take up computing and coding - a hobby that Lex greatly loved and soon became an expert in.
"Don't ever leave us again," Tim's voice was muffled as his face was still pushed against Robyn's stomach, refusing to separate from his idol. From a young age, Tim found dinosaurs fascinating and when he found out that his close family friend was a palaeontologist, he wanted to be by her side every hour of every day.
"I know, I know, I'm sorry," Robyn chuckled. "I'm so glad to see you."
Tim and Lex proceeded to hold each of Robyn's hands and pulled her down the stairs quickly after John. "C'mon, Auntie Robyn! Stop being so slow!"
The blonde laughed, looking behind her at her chuckling peers. "Hey! I'm your elder. Show some respect, yeah?"
Tim snorted, a habit he picked up from Robyn. "Yeah, yeah, yeah..."
The group made it outside the centre to see two modified jeeps leap up out of an underground garage. They move quietly, with a faint electronic hum, and straddle a partially buried metal rail is the middle of the road. The vehicles pull to a stop where the group is gathered. John explained how the jeeps were driverless and fully electric, adding for the third time that day that they spared no expense. Tim's death grip on Robyn's hand was flattering and heartwarming but soon cramped her fingers.
"Hey, Tim. You know Dr Grant there," Robyn whispered down to her younger friend whilst discreetly pointing to Alan. "He's a palaeontologist too. He's the author of your favourite dino book. He knows a lot more about raptors than I do..." she trailed off, knowing that velociraptors were one of Tim's favourite dinosaurs. Tim gasped in excitement and let go of Robyn's hand to bombard Alan with questions.
"Dr Sattler, Dr Morris," John called over to Ellie and Robyn. "Come with me to the second car. Lex and Tim will be fine in the first one."
As she was passing by Alan, she heard Ian pat Jimmy on the shoulder. "I'm gonna ride with Dr Morris."
Robyn chuckled at the teasing statement, knowing that her best friend was protective over her.
Ellie sat in the passenger's seat and I sat in the seat behind her, Ian opening the door opposite and sliding in beside her. Out of the front window, they could see Tim harassing Alan and Lex doing the same with Jimmy. Both men were practically fighting to get away from the children and to get to the last available seat in the second car, leaving the other to suffer in the car with the two talkative kids and argumentative lawyer.
After a good minute of chuckles from the three scientists in the car, Alan managed to get rid of Tim before Jimmy could do the same with Lex. The older man practically sprinted to the driver's seat, leaving Jimmy to get in the other car.
Robyn chuckled. "He really doesn't like those kids," she stated, gesturing toward her disgruntled friend. "He never has. I can't understand why though?"
Alan turned to look at her as if she had three heads. "You're kidding? That Tim nearly sucked all the energy out of me."
