ii. the helicopter
THE NEXT FEW DAYS WERE HECTIC FOR ROBYN. She had to designate a few trusted workers to finish off the dig for her while she was away. It was hard to trust someone else which such an important task but she knew that her workers were aware of how valuable the skeleton was and needed to be treated with care.
The day had come where Robyn and Jimmy would get on a helicopter with a few other 'experts' that they had not yet met. That day, Robyn was wearing a pale yellow short-sleeve button-up shirt along with a pair of blue pleated utility shorts, a pair of dark brown hiking boots, white socks and an orange flannel wrapped around her front. Her friend, Jimmy, was wearing a pair of black utility pants, a red t-shirt, hiking boots and a khaki jacket.
The two best friends saw John walking towards a jet black helicopter and decide to catch up to him. "John!" Robyn shouted just as the older man got to the chopper.
"Ah! Robyn!" John hugged his younger friend, gesturing fo the pilot to take her bags. "Jimmy." He acknowledged with a disappointed tone. "If you follow the pilot, you can put your bags away," He spoke to the brunet man, dismissively. Jimmy rolled his eyes, walking away whilst grumbling under his breath. "Ladies first, my dear," John allowed Robyn to get into the helicopter first. Once she got in, she saw four other people in there - two she was already acquainted with. These two people were Dr Alan Grant and Dr Ellie Sattler. They were fellow palaeontologists and the two digging groups had come across each other multiple times. Though it was usual for two teams in the same field of work to be competitors, Robyn's team and Alan and Ellie's team were always supportive of each other - like many teams in the digging field.
"Ellie! Alan!" Robyn exclaimed. "Hello again, it's good to see you!" She hugged Ellie who sat nearest the door and sent a grin to Alan who sat next to her.
"Robyn! What are you doing here?" Ellie was shocked to see her friend.
"Same as you, I suppose," Robyn laughed. She looked around the chopped to see a spare seat in front of Ellie and between the two strangers. "You don't mind if I sit here, do you?" Her voice was eloquent, her accent an odd mixture between an Australian and an American one, creating a unique and captivating voice.
"Not, uh, at all," the man stuttered with a grin. He had tanned skin, dark curly hair and clad in black trousers, a black open-chested button-up and a black leather jacket, completed with a pair of dark rectangular sunglasses.
"Thanks," Robyn smiled, buckling herself into the seat beside him. Just as she was about to introduce herself to her neighbour, Alan interrupted her.
"Jimmy's not with you, is he?" Alan whispered.
Before Robyn could answer, Jimmy made his presence known by stepping on the chopper and sitting beside Alan. "Hi, guys. Long time, no see. How you doing, bud?" Jimmy grinned, slinging his arm over Alan's shoulder briefly with a shake.
"Hi, Jimmy," Alan and Ellie said in unison, both with hints of disappointment laced in their acknowledgements.
Robyn chuckled at her friends. As the copter started up and began to fly, the young blonde noticed something clasped in Alan's hands. Robyn gasped, leaning forward to inspect the object. "Is that a Raptor claw?"
Alan smiled, showing off his prized possession. "Yes, ma'am."
"Wow," Robyn breathed out. "It's in such good condition."
John noticed that the four palaeontologists knew each other so chose to introduce Robyn and Jimmy to the two other men in the chopper. "My dear, I'd like you to meet Donald Gennaro and-" John gestured to the older man clad in an off-white suit - the lawyer, Robyn guessed. Before John could continue, the other man Robyn briefly spoke to before interrupted.
"Dr Ian Malcolm," The gentleman grinned, holding his hand out awkwardly to her. The two shook hands with smiles, yet what they couldn't see was Jimmy's glare. "And you are?"
"Dr Robyn Morris," she introduced. "And that's my friend, Dr Jimmy Franks."
Ian seemed to grin at the word 'friend', causing Jimmy's envious smile to grow more cynical. "So, uh, you four know each other? You, uh, dig up dinosaurs?" He grinned between licking his lips.
"We try to," Alan answered coolly. Ian began to chuckle uncontrollably at the answer.
"You'll have to get used to Dr Malcolm," John excused his acquaintance's behaviour. "He suffers from a deplorable excess of personality - especially for a mathematician."
"Chaotician. Chaotician, actually," Ian corrected John, not denying his statements.
"A chaotician?" Robyn clarified with a grin. "You know, I used to date a chaotician. Too big of an ego for me. Hope that's not a common trait among your field," she joked.
Ian chuckled, his arm slinging over the back of Robyn's headrest. "I'm, uh, afraid you might be disappointed, Robbie."
Robyn's brows raised and a small chuckle left her lips. "Robbie? I don't think anyone's ever called me that before."
"Nobody? Not even your friend over there?" Ian questioned with a smirk, knowing that he was getting under Jimmy's skin. Robyn laughed and shook her head. "Well, uh, I hope it's, um, suitable for you."
Robyn nodded with a smile. "I love it. Thanks, Ian," She saw something flicker in his hazel eyes.
"What does a chaotician study exactly?" Jimmy asked, interrupting the two.
Ian turned towards the rest of the group. "Chaos theory. John doesn't really subscribe to chaos. He doesn't like what it has to say, particularly about what it thinks of his science project," Ian prodded, egging John on with a laugh.
"Ian, you've never been able to sufficiently explain your concerns," John defended himself. The two men clearly had a history. On the outside, it seemed hostile and hateful, but with a closer look, you can see the teasing atmosphere between them.
"Because of the behaviour of the system in phase space?" Ian was confident with his words, knowing exactly what he was talking about, while the people around him seemed none the wiser.
"A load, if I may so, of fashionable number crunching-" John insulted Ian's work. Ian didn't seem offended at all as a grin remained on his features as he prodded John's knee. "Don't," John whacked Ian's hand away.
"Doctors, you've heard of Chaos Theory?" Ian asked Alan, Ellie, Jimmy and Robyn.
All four of them shook their heads. "No? Didn't, uh, your ex tell you anything about it, Robbie?" Ian asked Robyn with a sly smile.
Robyn shrugged. "He tried. But most of it flew over my head. He didn't have the greatest way with words."
Ian chuckled. "Non-linear equations? Strange attractors?" Ian tried to test the four scientists but to no avail as they all shook their heads. "I refuse to believe you aren't familiar with the concept of attraction," Ian spoke directly to Robyn with a smirk.
Robyn giggled, a blush coating her cheeks as she turned her head to look down at her lap. Ian chuckled when he saw Jimmy glaring at the sight.
"I bring scientists," John pointed to the four palaeontologists, directing his statement towards Gennaro. "You bring a rockstar," John finished, gesturing to a grinning Ian. Gennaro was offended by John's statement, but before the lawyer could retaliate, John held his hand up to silence the party. "There it is!"
