ACT I ▬▬▬▬ slip up & skidaddle
JESSICA OMEGA ANSWERED THE PHONE WITH A SIGH. "Carlisle, when are you getting back in town?" She asked with urgency, not even giving the man a second to breathe. Metaphorically that is.
Carlisle stuttered, "I'm not sure, Jessica. Edward is still isolating himself and no one can convince him to rejoin us"
Everyone who knew of the Cullen's secret, knew what happened in Bella's birthday. Jasper lost control after the girl nicked herself and Edward deemed her life unsafe if he was around. Either Bella swans luck, her life was unsafe in general.
Jessica sighed, "the red head is back, she's attacking locals and she attacked my niece last night" the woman hissed quietly, her eyes darting around the back room to make sure none of the employees heard the conversation.
"I'm sorry Jessica, is Hailey okay?" The man asked with sympathy, he did feel bad — that was one thing about Carlisle, he held the guilt of a thousand souls.
The woman nodded even though he couldn't see her. "Yeah, the boys got there just in time" Jessica mumbled. "Tell Edward to come to his senses. What happened to Bella isn't anyone's fault, he's only hurting her more by staying away."
"I know but he doesn't, Jasper is still struggling — and I'm sorry Victoria is causing so much struggle and pain. I'll contact my cousins and see if they can help." Carlisle promised, a voice called out in the background. "I'm sorry Jessica but I have to go. You know where I am" he vowed.
He was always kind. She hated that about him.
"No more vampires, Carlisle." and she hung up.

Embry pressed down on the horn of the car four time before Hailey pulled open the front door. He stood his head out of the truck window, "get in! We're going to Emily's!" He yelled, watching as the girl sighed before slipping on a tossed flannel and begrudgingly slid into the truck.
Embry wasted no pulling out of the small driveway. His hand lingered near the radio before he turned down the volume.
"I'm sorry, you know" he uttered, with a solemn stare.
Hailey looked at him, confusion present on her face. "For what?" She asked quietly.
Embry swallowed, "for leaving."
Hailey shook her head, "I get it, bry. You couldn't tell me, pack orders and shit" The girl promised with a bright smile. She scooted over and leant her head on his shoulder, something she used to do frequently before the shift.
Embry grunted, "you smell weirdly like Paul" he noted, with furrowed eyebrows.
Hailey shrugged, "yeah he showed up this morning after last night" she spoke casually, as if being attacked by a vampire was an everyday experience.
"It won't happen again, just call when you need a ride" Embry grumbled, the thought of Hailey being killed, even turned made him sick to her stomach.
"Don't worry, Paul's already assigned himself personal chauffeur for the time being" Hailey explained, she had to get used to seeing him around more often since Sam and Emily have basically adopted the girl.
Embry looked at the girl as he came to a stop. "Are you okay with that?" He asked softly. He was there when it fell apart, he didn't know if he could do it again. Everyone but Hailey seemed to see the feelings he had for her, she never could see anyone but Paul.
Hailey nodded, "I have to be, there's no getting rid of him" she laughed softly, kissing embry's cheek and she smiled at him. "And you're not getting rid of me, either." He was her best friend, nothing more — nothing less.
Embrys cheek flushed, "ditto!" He mustered out. Hailey smiled before hopping out of the truck. She jogged up the creaky steps and pushed open the sliding door.
"Parents, I'm home!" She yelled out watching as all the boys turned to look at her with weird looks.
"Did younot just nearly die?" Jared blurted out, before a sharp blow to his ribs shut him up.
Hailey shrugged, "gave me a new outlook on life. Oh, hey Jake!" She smiled before it dropped and she slowly turned back to him. "What are you doing here?" She asked with suspicious eyes.
Jared smiled and put his arm around the boys neck, "Jakey here is the newest member of the pack!" The boy revealed, ruffling his hair.
Hailey noddded with satisfaction, "congrats, but that doesn't give you an excuse to not work on the truck" she pointed at him.
Jake's hands shot into the air, "don't worry it's coming along" she assured her.
Her glare turned to a happy smile, "good, now where are the brownies I can smell them." She asked with warning eyes.
Jared stare turned tired the table, "you didn't" she accused.
Jared's eyes widened in alarm as he backed up, "they were just too good" he attempted to plead his case.
Hailey took one step towards him before Paul's arm slung around her shoulders. His leant down, so close his lips were touching her ear — "there's one I saved for you in the microwave" he whispered with a cheeky smile gracing g his face.
Hailey groaned, "you are my savior" she mumbled, immediately going to retrieve the treat.
It was moments like these that Hailey forgot why she was mad at Paul in the first place. This was the Paul, Hailey loved and knew.
"Ugh Emily you are a godsend in the kitchen" Hailey raved on, she adored the woman's cooking — if that wasn't obvious.
Emily laughed, "you're too sweet, Hailey" she smiled, "so what are your guys plans?" The woman asked look g at the group.
Sam's stern expression softened, "you guys have been working hard. Grab the football we'll head down to the beach." He nodded, watching g as the boys shuffled from the house.
Jared stopped in front of him, "can I bring Kim?" He asked hopefully.
Sam seemed to weigh the consequences, "I'm not sure, Jared."
"From what I've heard she's quite shy and I wouldn't want the boys to scare her off" Emily butted in with a kind smile.
"If Paul and you get to have your imprints it's only fair—" Jared began ranting until Hailey cut in.
"What's an imprint?" She asked with curiosity.
Jared's jaw dropped, "nothing!" He rushed out before sprinting from the kitchen.
Hailey turned to Sam, "what's an imprint?" She spoke with more force.
Same shrugged, "not my place, try Paul."
Hailey nodded with narrow eyes, before wandering into the kitchen to help prepare a basket for the beach.
The boys never stopped eating.
Especially Jared.
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Hailey rested her head against her balled up flannel as she attempted to soak up the last remaining sun, but to no avail — she was freezing. Goosebumps littered her tan skin and shivers ran down her body every few minutes. The boys were on their third game of football, and Hailey was close to stabbing the ball with a knife Emily brought in the picnic basket just to stop Jared complaining about loosing.
As Hailey attempted to get comfortable the sun was suddenly blocked and a shadow was casted over her, opening her eyes Paul stood above her. "You're cold" he stated.
"One point to captain obvious" she grumbled, using her hand to shoo him away. "You're blocking the sun."
Paul chuckled, "the UV is two, not exactly tanning appropriate."
Hailey squinted at him, "why were you checking the UV?" She asked suspiciously.
Paul shrugged, "you always check it and you left your phone back at ems, now move over" he stated, as he sat down he wrapped a warm arm around her neck and rested the other over her waist as she laid on her side leaning on her elbow.
Hailey sighed and leant against him. "This doesn't mean anything"she vowed.
Paul nodded, "sure, Hails."
Silence overlapped the pair as they watched the boys play football and Emily and Sam cuddled up.
Hailey let her mind wander and suddenly she had the burning urge to question Paul.
"So.." she began, and Paul looked down at her with such attention— any other girl would've fainted. "What's an imprint?"

— RIN SPEAKS
Honestly my man Paul cannot catch a break, if shifters could indulge in alcohol and get a result from it — Paul would always be drunk. As our parents said as a child "I'm just having one to relax"
It's never just one...
