ACT I ▬▬▬▬ visit from the dead
HAILEY FELT THE WOVEN MATERIAL UNDER HER BODY, but her mind was somewhere else. She looked into the abyss but the darkness went on for what seemed like miles. Whispers swirled around her, some she could make out and some in a foreign tongue.
"The red head." One whispered, causing Hailey to swivel around quicker than light. She came face to face with an old man, his tan skin and sunken eyes were a tell tale sign as one of the dead.
only the ancestors showed them selves.
Haileys eyebrows furrowed. "Who's the red head?" She questioned, her skin raising in small bumps as his hand touched her cheek. He felt like ice... so cold it burned.
The old man smiled. "Think, my child. Use that brain of yours that has been gifted by the elders" he stated, pulling his hand away.
Hailey felt her cheek begin to ache, "tell me more, please" she pleaded with widened eyes. She wanted to know more, she needed to.
The elder sighed, "razor sharp teeth and skin like glass, she will kill whoever she may pass" he spoke in riddles.
She felt wetness drop under her nose. Reaching up to wipe it, a red smear appeared on her hand. "No it's too early!" She yelled as the world began to blend into a blur.
"Seek rest, child. Trust what has broken" he mumbled, stepping into the darkness.
Hailey felt her eyes roll to the back of her head, and her body collapsed backwards. The deep smell of woods and salt water brining her back into the world of the living.
"Are you okay?" Sue asked calmly. Her motherly nature taking over as she placed a cold cloth on her forehead.
Hailey shook her head as sue assured her to sit up. "It was weird, sue.. really weird" Hailey muttered, her eyes scanning the room before landing on sam. "You've a shit ton of explaining to do" she stated with wary eyes.
Sam nodded, "so do you."
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
After much debate, that Hailey was indeed fine, she convinced Sam to tell her everything. She could tell he was holding something back, but he wouldn't crack.
With a hot cup of tea in her hands and an ice pack rested against her bruising cheek, she stared at him with widened eyes. "Your shits weirder than mine" she stated, bringing the mug to her mouth as she sipped it slowly.
Sam's held tilted, "so what's your baggage?" He asked with a slight chuckle.
He had seen it. The white eyes, convulsing, the node bleeds and the muttering incoherently.
"It's a lot Sam, no one besides the council is supposed to know" Hailey spoke slowly, her eyes glued to the table.
Sam sighed, "I have to know" he paused, inhaling deeply. "I have to know if you will be a threat to yourself or others" he stated solemnly. It was a hard pill to swallow, how could the girl he used to babysit be a threat?
"Jeez you sound like Dr Cullen after my dad died." She laughed softly. "We don't really know what caused it, the council said my dad's death and Paul... traumatic events or something like that— triggered it" Hailey explained softly, her eyes becoming wet. "It started with dreams, small whispers from people — telling me things.. I just brushed it off but then they started to come true."
Sam stared at the girl intensely, grasping every word she spoke and yearning to know more.
"Then I started getting sick. Fever, aches, mood swings and then I started passing out and the dreams would happen then too." She shrugged, feeling a calloused hand on top of hers she met Sam's eyes.
She was like them, just not.
"What are you?"
Hailey sighed, "one of them called me quae mortuos vocat, it took me a while to figure out it was Latin. It means she who calls the dead, so in simple words I'm some sort of medium. I can usually control it, pick and choose who and when I want to talk — but the sickness and convulsions only happen when it's forced by the spirit."
It was a lot of information to take it. Hailey knew that. So she was patient with Sam as he came to grasps with the new revelation that vampires and boys who turn into extraordinarily large wolfs were not the only creatures that roamed the planet.
The man looked at Hailey and squeezed her hand. "You're not alone Hailey, I'm here for you" he assured her, his eyes soft and warm.
Hailey nodded with a small smile, "This doesn't mean I still don't hate you anymore" she smirked weakly, trying to cover the sheer comfort she felt from the man.
Sam shook his head with a laugh, "I don't doubt it."
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Jessica stood at the door with her cardigan wrapped tightly around her body. She watched as Haileys truck pulled up, worry was etched into the woman's face as sam helped her niece from the car.
"Again?" Jessica called, rushing down the steps of the small home.
Hailey nodded, brushing the hair covering the bruise that painted her cheek. "Second time this month" Hailey mumbled looking at sam.
Sam looked at the two women, "how much does this usually happen?" He asked warily.
"That happens maybe once every few months, but it's becoming more regular" Hailey shrugged pulling herself up the steps with a sluggish manner.
Jessica looked to Sam, "I think it's best if you head home to your fiancé, Sam" the woman stated, her eyes darting back to Hailey with a worried expression.
Sam nodded, "I'll collect you from work tomorrow, there's things we still have to talk about" the man said, looking to Hailey.
She nodded, and Sam headed towards to tree line.
Jessica closed the door and helped Hailey to her room. "I take it you know?" The woman asked, sitting on the edge of Haileys bed.
Hailey sighed, "yeah, would've been nice to know" the girl paused, "At least I know Paul isn't a steroid junkie, just turns into a fucking wolf" the girl muttered, wincing as she hit off her cheek by accident.
Jessica sighed, "I know it's difficult to understand, but no one is normal in this town."
Hailey nodded, "I'm tired" she stated, rolling to face the wall.
Jessica stood up, kissing the girls head before turning off the light.
The woman grasped the glass of wine that was discarded on the coffee table. Feeling under the pillows, Jessica picked up her phone and scrolling until she came across a number.
It wasn't ringing long before they answered. "Jessica? What can I do for you?" The man spoke.
"Hey Carlisle, I'm worried."

— RIN SPEAKS
Background = unlocked... so if you know me or my books I hate writing mundane characters, so obviously in the fandom we call twilight it is very supernaturally oriented so I jumped on that and ran with it.
