Finally the day he'd been dreading was here. Last night was the only one when he couldn't sleep due to nervousness. And this morning he couldn't halt the dawn ebbing it's gradual way into daylight.
His sixth sense was giving him the signal that he did something wrong and what's done cannot be undone. Due to all this chaos in his mind he couldn't think straight this morning.
He was losing the control so much that he put his mobile phone in the wrong pocket and then panicked when he couldn't find it.
His hands spread like a pale-starfish around the coffee-cup, and they were cold too, resisting the warmth that struggles to seep into them.
He pushed the breakfast away which was served to him by his servant. With his head buzzing with possibilities, there was no way on Earth he'd swallow a bite, let alone a whole plateful.
Wearing his usual black three piece, he ordered the driver to start the car as he sat in the passenger's seat. The whole ride was full of nail-biting, to him it felt like the route was much more longer than it was supposed to be.
His strong thoughts which led him to another world were broken by the vibration in his side pocket. He took his phone out and saw kartik's number flashing on the screen.
"Yes?" he attended the phone within seconds.
"It's 10:30! Where are you?" Kartik asked him.
"I'm on my way to someplace important." he replied as he put his shades on due to sharp rays of sunlight.
"What? You're not coming to office? But everyone's waiting for you." kartik almost yelled.
"Who's waiting for me?" varun asked him, confused.
"You organized an interview session, dickhead!" kartik reminded him, to which varun mentally slapped himself.
"Gosh. I forgot!" he closed his eyes in frustration.
"Seriously?" varun could feel kartik roll his eyes on the other side of the phone.
"I'll tell you what, tell Sara to conduct the interviews." varun told him.
"Sara? But you always choose your secretary by yourself. After all your taste in women is different from all of us." kartik replied.
"It's not a big deal kartik. Just tell her to select the hot one. It's that simple." by saying this he hung up the phone.
After forty-five minutes drive which felt like hours for him, they finally reached the orphanage where his lawyer was already standing outside, waiting for him.
"Can I come in, princess?" kartik knocked on the door of Sara's office.
"Ughh... Not again!" she rolled her eyes and motioned him to come in.
"Actually, I just come here to tell you...." before he could finish his sentence sara cut him off.
"Kartik. Can you please cut it out? I've had enough of your bullshit! Can't you see I'm not interested!" Sara yelled at him and the wide smile that kartik had on his face while coming in, immediately faded.
"I-I didn't come here to bother you. Varun told me to tell you to take the interviews today. That's it." he spoke softly, his eyes gazing downward. She immediately felt bad for bursting out at him.
"Kartik, I-" before she could even say more, he left the office. She threw her head in her hands in frustration.
"Mr.Dhawan, meet Ms.Jia. The co-owner of this orphanage." his lawyer introduced him. He shook hands with the lady, which was apparently in her late thirties.
"So, Ms. Jia. I last night got a call for my lawyer that their is a girl who's said to be my daughter?" he asked.
"Yes, it's true Mr. Dhawan." she simply nodded.
"How? I mean, from the information I got, she's five-years old. If she's my daughter, where was she all these years?" Varun asked.
"I understand your situation Mr. Dhawan but as far as the rumors go, I've heard you don't have any good image regarding women. Maybe this daughter of yours is a result of one of your one night stand." Jia smiled at him in a taunting way.
"First of all, stop calling her my daughter. Nothing has been proved yet and second, I've had always used protection before having those one night stands." he argued.
"Sir, she's right." his lawyer jumped into the conversation, earning a glare from varun.
"Do you by any means, know a woman named Tara Sutaria?" his lawyer asked him.
"Her? How could I forget her? She worked at my office few years ago. But due to her addiction with drugs, she was fired from the post." he replied after thinking for a good one-minute.
"Well, I hope you'll not be happy to hear this but she's the mother of your daughter." Jia told him making him feel like someone pulled the rug beneath him.
"That's.... Thats not possible." he gulped, nervously.
"Ms. Tara Sutaria has been recently taken in police custody due to her behavior towards her daughter. Due to access amount of drugs she totally lost control and tried to hurt the little girl. Fortunately, we were able to find the birth certificate which had your name on it." Jia explained him.
"It's not true. It can be a planning. Maybe she wants money." he was now giving all the lame excuses he had.
"If she wanted money, she wouldn't have hidden your daughter from you for five years Mr. Dhawan." Jia told him.
"I still can't belive hit." he said wiping off the sweat from his forehead.
"Sir, if you won't sort this out then the court will take this matter because the girl had been a victim of abuse. I prefer you to take her." his lawyer advised.
"No. Not without a DNA test." he replied.
"No problem Mr. Dhawan, you can have a DNA test, if that's what satisfy you." Jia said, politely.
"Can I- meet her?" he asked and Jia nodded and asked the worker to bring her. During the waiting period, a muscle twitched involuntarily at the corner of his right eye, his mouth formed a rigid grimace.
With arms folded tightly across his bold chest, he tapped his foot furiously and all the while stared out of the grimy window.
His eyes moved towards the door as he heard little foot-steps approaching. His heart sank at the moment he saw the little girl standing at the door with a cute brown teddy bear in her hand.
Her hairs were brown in color just like her mother and her eyes were the most beautiful eyes he had ever seen. He stood up from his place and approached her but she hid behind Jia.
"I'm sorry. She's just scared. After all she has gone through." Jia stated.
"It's ok. I understand." he nodded as he reached out his hand towards the little girl.
"Hey there!" he looked at her with a smile. She came out of hiding and stood in front of him.
"You're my daddy, right?" the little girl asked making him speechless.
"My mama once showed me a photo of you. Are you here to take me?" she said with her eyes full of hope.
"What's your name?" he asked.
"Rhea Dhawan." she replied softly. He nodded and stood up.
"I'll come back tomorrow." he said and was about to leave when rhea hugged his legs.
"Are you gonna leave me like mama?" she looked up at him with those beautiful eyes, innocently. And this was the moment he knew that he didn't need any DNA test prove that she's his daughter.
