The next day, I was seated on my personal seat at school. Jeremiah, Dami and Judith, were also with me. I still hadn't gotten the image of Kingsley's lifeless body out of my head. And I knew it wouldn't leave any time soon. I knew I shouldn't have gone to school, but I knew not getting to school would only waste more time. And that was something none of us had.
"So his body was just laying there, lifeless?!" Exclaimed Judith. I just couldn't tell her what happened yesterday, cause I was still shocked as at that time. The class was half filled, as most of the students went out for lunch.
"Yes," Dami hushed her. "They literally just said that."
"But why did he have to die?" I asked, looking at no one in particular. "He knew about Tatiana, but I'm sure he had no hand in Happiness' death. The girl literally hung herself and slit her own throat to make a suicidal revenge note to T."
"That's what we need to find out," Jeremiah spoke up for the first time, since we all gathered. "There must be something we're missing."
Immediately Jeremiah said those words, we heard gum chewing. No surprise, it belonged to Rosemary. She had her minions behind her and on her right hand side, was Femi.
"Look at that, Rosemary." Femi voiced out, pointing at us. "They are protecting her, Uyai."
"What's your problem, man?" Dami, being tired of Femi's stupidity, finally snapped.
"I don't have one," Femi replied with a devilish grin on his face. "All I want - ever wanted, is for her," He stopped, to point at me with his blue lucky corer pen. "To admit that she's Uyai, and not her sister Tatiana."
"Ahhh, so you believe Uyai had a sister." Judith scoffed at Femi. Since she'd started schooling here, Rosemary had never been her problem. Judith only saw her as a wanna be BeyoncΓ©.
"Yes," Femi admitted nonchalantly. "Cause I know that my new girlfriend Rosemary, wouldn't lie about the existent of Tatiana."
"Ewww," I found the strength to scrunch my nose, as I heard about Rosemary being his girlfriend.
"Gross," Judith commented right after me.
"But I know, that you ain't no Tatiana." Femi concluded.
"Meaning she is Tatiana," Jeremiah brilliantly used Femi's own words against him. Femi looked at Jeremiah confusingly.
"Come on babe," Rosemary said and at the same time, chewed her gum loudly. "The swimming competition is coming in less than two weeks. Remember, you said she can't swim." I gulped visibly at that.
"So let's see how she'll float on the pool," Rosemary gave a cheeky smile, which happened to reach her eyes. "Let's watch how she'll die."
Rosemary snapped her fingers, gaining the attention of her minions. She placed her hands on Femi, and four of them turned and left the class.
"That girl is on the suspect list, right?" Judith asked, referring to Rosemary.
"Yes," I sighed. "Don't you see, she's devil worthy."
Jeremiah, while Irene and I were busy talking, had his fingers tap his chin in thought. "Uyai, you said you were kidnapped when you were an infant right?"
I nodded my head. "Which meant your ghetto parents are obviously not your biological ones." He went on. "Aren't you the least curious about who kidnapped you?"
I bent my head low, and sniffled a bit. "Truth be told, I was curious when I met T at the bridge. But, I just couldn't believe nor come to the fact that my parents in the ghetto, had me kidnapped from my biological parents and then, ended up making my life miserable with their continuous beatings and punching."
I felt Judith's hands on my shoulder. She was indeed the only person that had ever had my back against my parents. She knew about My parents unfavorable treatment between Idara and myself, but still stuck to me like a glue. She was worth being called my best friend.
"How...." For the first time, I noticed Jeremiah hesitating. "How about I look into that for you."
"You want to?" I stared at him in the eyes. Jeremiah gave me a small smile, before nodding. Irene and Omonigho walked towards us quietly, both holding lots of snacks.
"Why is Dami and Jeremiah at our seat?" Omonigho asked the question.
I bit my lower lips, as I thought of what to say. I opened my mouth to speak, but Dami beat me to it.
"They were helping me," Dami quickly said, composing himself. "Cause of you."
Omonigho lifted her brows in confusion. "Me? Why?"
"Um," Dami gulped down. He got up and moved towards Omonigho. "Senior Pride is coming soon and well, I wanted to ask you to be my dance."
Irene literally squealed beside Omonigho, making me to chuckle.
"Uh," Judith said in a low tone, so only I could hear her. "And I thought he liked me."
I snorted and fought the urge of saying I told you so.
"So what d'you say? Accept me?" Dami waited for Omonigho's reply. "Or have someone beat me to it?"
"N-No," Omonigho waved her hands frantically. "No other person has asked me to the dance. I was just a little bit stunned you did."
"So?" Dragged Dami. We all shifted our gazes from Omonigho's to Dami, and then back to Omonigho again. It was like watching a show, and waiting for the host to call out who was going to be evicted.
"Yes," Omonigho's smiles were genuinely filled with happiness. Dami whom had been holding his breath, finally let it out. It was obvious she just made him really happy.
"Thank you so___" The automatic bell rung, signalling that the lunch break was over.
Judith got up from Irene's space, while Jeremiah got up from Omonigho's. He gave me a slight nod, and literally dragged Dami to their seat at the back.
Not to long after that, The Civic teacher Miss Royal, walked into the classroom with her long note and text book.
"Hi everyone. As you all know, I'm Miss Royal." She said, placing her books at the desk that was provided for teachers at the front, which was close to the class window. "I'm twenty-two, like I'd said the other day. So if you need anything, I'm here for you. I'm just a couple of years older."
Everyone liked her already. What's there not to like? She was really beautiful, her fair skin glowed pretty well, making me want to know the products she was using. "You all could ask any questions before we start today's lecture."
Jaja was the first to lift up his hands, before speaking. "Do you have a boyfriend?" Some students laughed, including me. While others pointed out how stupid he was.
Miss Royal on the other hand, smiled brightly. She didn't frown at Jaja, neither did she feel offended by his question. Instead, she told him off nicely. "No um...."
"Jaja!" The whole class helped at the same time.
"Wow," Miss Royal laughed. "You are a popular figure, aren't you." She ended her statement, making it sound like a sentence. "No Jaja, I don't have one. But I'm also not searching at the moment." The students laughed so hard, as Jaja sulked down on his seat.
"How was your results after school?" Omonigho asked. Irene quickly slapped her at her upper arm.
"That's personal," Irene spat at Omonigho. "That's the reason Tatiana complained about you. You don't know the difference between personal and public stuff."
"It's alright um..."
"Irene," Irene helped Miss Royal out.
"Irene." Miss Royal focused her attention on Omonigho. "What's your name?"
"O-Omonigho," She stuttered, already feeling guilty.
Miss Royal didn't look offended, instead she turned to the class. "I'm a first class student of Unilag, department of political science."
"Wow," Everyone were amazed by her, even me. I knew I was too stupid to ever come out with a first class certificate.
Wait, political.....
I lifted my hands immediately, before I could finish my thoughts. Miss Royal gestured to me, "Yeah?"
"Hi, I'm Tatiana Ukeme, the head girl to this fine institute." Jeremiah had ones told me, that T loved bragging. He also said that that was one of the things people didn't like about her. I decided to do that, so I could prove to people like Femi, that I was the real stuff.
"I've also been a straight A student right from my Jss class." I knew I had to actually read books, to keep up with T's straight A result. And according to Jeremiah, he told me not to look at T's bragging in a bad way. People still loved her and her ego made others to work harder.
"Question, I've got a friend at your school and also in your department. Kingsley. Please, do you know him?" I decided to ask her.
Miss Royal stopped to think. "I don't know, there are a dozen and one Kingsley at my school. But I do know one, a year younger than I am. He was the fun type of guy, though he had his flaws. Why asking?"
I smiled, and thought of an excuse. "A friend of mine. He claimed to be very popular, and I wanted to see if it's true."
"Well, if the Kingsley I'm talking about is yours, then he's super popular." Miss Royal concluded. I sat down back on my seat. Who was I kidding. There really might be a thousand and one Kingsley in that school. How would I know what had happened to him?
After series of questions from students, Miss Royal went over to the reasons of today's class. "I'm new at this," She gave out a nervous chuckle. "So do bare with me."
New? Did she just say she was.... New?! Miss Royal was incredible! Even I, a dumb ass, could understand her teachings. Sometimes, she made us forget she was older than us.
After her class, Miss Royal called for Jeremiah the class representative, and his assistant Omonigho, to follow her so they could help with her attendance book.
After they left the class, Irene, Judith and I, stood up from our individual seats. We three decided to go to the stall at the back of the school, to grasp some snacks.
"Tatiana," Jubilee's voice stopped me. I turned and gave him a cold look.
"What do you want?" Irene spoke out, instead of me. "No one wants anything to do with you."
"Hey girl, chill." Judith said to Irene. "At least, hear him out."
"Why?" Irene voiced out again. "He's a loner, a sadist and a dangerous psycho. I do not want him anywhere close to my best friend." Judith fought the urge of rolling her eyes at her.
I gave Irene a warm smile. I knew she meant well. "Both you and Judith can go ahead. I'll catch up with you guys."
Irene was reluctant, but Judith practically dragged her out of the classroom. I turned my attention back on Jubilee. The expression he had on his face told me to follow him, which I did.
We arrived at the empty class we had met the other day. I wasn't sure what he wanted, but I wanted him to get it over with. I still hadn't forgiving him for trying to get on Jeremiah's nerve the other day.
"Why did you say those stuff to Jeremiah," I asked him, trying to not yell at him. His lack of response finally got on my nerves. "Speak!"
"I don't know," Jubilee sighed, pacing back and forth. "I've been asking myself that question all day and all night." He stopped his pacing, and gaze at me. "But I've come to realize that I didn't like the idea of him being close to you."
"What the effing what?" I scrunch my nose at him. "What are you talking about?"
"You helped me during the alley attack. You were with me in this same classroom, fixing a drone." He listed, while I stared at him, waiting for him to get to the point. "Only one person had ever done that to me, and then there was you."
I shrugged my shoulders, "It wasn't a big deal."
"To me," Jubilee walked closer and leaned towards my ear. I pressed my lips tightly, just in case of necessity. "It is. And I don't like Jeremiah being close to you."
"Leave Jeremiah out of___"
"I know your secret," Jubilee interrupted me. "And if that's the reason you're close to him cause he knows too, then don't. I can help you."
"Help me by not hurting Jeremiah." I knew he could, he was way bigger than Jeremiah. "And help me, by finding informations about this scary weird texts I've been receiving."
I maneuvered my way out of his reach, and headed for the door. I opened the door to the classroom. But before I could walk out, I turned to face Jubilee.
"If you can do that, I'll take you as nothing but a friend." I walked out and backed the door behind me after I had spoken my mind. I leaned against the door and exhaled loudly.
Jubilee scared the shit out of me.
