vii. adoration of a best friend.

BLOODSPORT
CHAPTER SEVEN !

OTHER THAN HER FAMILY, —her mother whom she adored, her twin brother who, while she pretended he annoyed her, she knew she could never live without and her uncle, who had inspired so much of her love for the horror genre, other than them, there was only one other person whom Mindy knew she could never be apart from...that person was Pauline Summers.

The numerous attacks that had plagued Woodsboro in just a few days, which was clear as day to Mindy to be a continuation of the attacks that came years before, had left everyone feeling scared. Constantly on edge that they would be next. For Mindy, she didn't worry for herself, instead her greatest fear was loosing the ones she held nearest and dearest. The idea of being without them left her feeling totally terrified.

As she sat atop her bed, body relaxed back into the comforter and pillows though her mind was anything but at ease, she stared over at the girl who had taken capture of her affections many moons ago. A soft smile graced her lips as Pauline stood before the large mirror, holding up a dress in front of her body, judging whether it would look good.

Though she pretended otherwise to stave off Chad's suggestive looks whenever Pauline was around, Mindy had been enamoured by the Summers girl for as long as she could remember. It pained her greatly to feign indifference around her best friend when in reality all she wanted was to pull her in and never let her go.

From gentle grabs of the hand to pressing up closely against Pauline when they watched movies, Mindy had hoped her hints were clear though it appeared Pauline was far more oblivious than Mindy had previously believed.

The two had spent the better part of forty minutes preparing for the party that was to be held at their friend Amber's house later that night. A memorial of sorts for their fallen friend, Wes Hicks. Taken far too soon by some sick bastard.

In a cruel twist of fate, some of Mindy's last words to the boy had been about how both he and his mother would be safe because 'No one cares about the shitty, inferior sequels.' How wrong she had been and how stupid she felt about it now.

"Can I ask you something?" The sound of Pauline's voice pulled the Meeks-Martin girl from her thoughts. Her dark, brown eyes glanced up and over at Pauline, who looked slightly freaked. "And I know that it's gonna sound weird and totally accusatory but I just have to get this off my chest."

Stress seemed to be enveloping the girl which caused Mindy to manoeuvre herself into an upright position. "Lina, just chill. Whatever it is, I'm sure it's not as bad as you think." She said in a calming tone.

Whatever Pauline wished to ask, was clearly important enough that it was bothering her this much. For the entire time the pair had known each other, not once had Mindy ever seen her best friend so incredibly on edge. Perhaps Wes' demise was taking a larger toll on her that initially believed.

The Summers girl released a deep sigh while setting aside the dress she held. "Amber has been acting really weird recently. Especially when it comes to Tara." Her teeth began to slowly gnaw at her bottom lip as she stared over at Mindy.

Though she didn't say exactly what she meant, though she didn't utter the accusatory words, Mindy knew. Pauline worried that Amber was more involved in the recent attacks than they were led to believe. How she came to this conclusion, Mindy had no clue.

For the briefest of moments, Mindy simply stared up at Pauline. On one hand, she found herself feeling concerned for her friend, —accusing one of their closest friends of such violence was quite the stretch, especially from the Freeman girl simply acting 'weird', while on the other hand, a sense of pride bloomed in her chest at Pauline trusting her instincts. If her gut told her something was amiss, then perhaps it truly was.

"I sound crazy, right?" Pauline's eyes grew wide as she began to release gasps of disbelief filled laughs. Her hands flew to her hair, fingers carding through the strands and gripping onto her roots. "God, I can't believe I just said that. I accused our fucking friend of being a killer."

The sight of her best friend and girl who left her breathless by simply existing spiralling had the Meeks-Martin girl rushing to her feet. She moved across the room in one second flat and stopped in front of the Summers girl.

"Lina, Lina, listen." Mindy spoke in a soothing tone to ease the panic that had swelled up within the Summers girl. Her hands gently took hold of Pauline, halting the girl in place before using a single hand to grip her chin and forcing Pauline to focus. "Hey, stop freaking out. Look at me."

Together, the two breathed a couple of deep breaths, their gazes remaining locked upon the other. With her voice still calm and quiet, Mindy questioned, "Other than your mom, who would you say knows you best?"

Confusion over Pauline's features. "Well, you obviously."

Despite the situation, Mindy couldn't bite back her grin. "Exactly. I know you best and not once have you ever said something like this before. You've never accused anyone of anything even when they deserved it. If you say Amber's been acting weird, than maybe you're right."

As her best friend spoke, an appreciative smile appeared on Pauline's lips. "Thanks, Mindy. I was worried you'd think I was being a bitch." She uttered with a sigh of relief.

"Please. If anything, I'm proud you're finally listening to your gut. Mine has me telling me for years when people are sketchy." The Meeks-Martin girl cheekily joked as she pulled away and walked back over to her bed.

Breaths of amusement exhaled from Pauline as her eyes rolled at the cocky attitude her friend exuded. She quickly returned to the mirror and grabbed hold of the dress, holding it up high in Mindy's direction. "I think I'm gonna wear this."

Mindy's head nodded. "You should. It looks great on you." She complimented with a teasing wink which immediately caused Pauline to turn away with her head hung low, the rouge tint that bloomed upon her cheeks going unnoticed by Mindy.

THE PARTY WAS IN full swing by the time the two girls arrived. Their fellow teens had begun downing cup after cup of alcohol from the numerous kegs and punch bowls that surrounded the home and the overwhelming scent of alcohol filled the air.

Pauline knew that many in attendance hadn't given a shit about Wes or his mother and had only shown up to get utterly wasted. It was definitely annoying but she couldn't help but want to do the exact same. Drink and drink until the pain of the losing a close friend had numbed. For the remainder of the night, all she wished to do was to forget.

The young Summers girl was pressed tightly into the corner of the kitchen counters, clutching tightly to her red solo cup of generic brand beer, when Chad wandered in with a shot glass raised high in the air. "Hey! To Wes!" He bellowed out.

A mass of teenagers were quick to reply with their own yell of, "To Wes!" Before swiftly returning to their conversation with nary a regard for the boy the were supposed to be mourning. The lack of respect really pissed Pauline off.

Chad knocked back the shot which was followed by a slight grimace as the sharp taste mingled on his tastebuds. Any fun he had been having speedily died when Amber rushed up and yanked the glass from his hands. "Shots, really? This is supposed to be a memorial."

"Well, this is how I mourn and distract myself from the looming spectre of Death." Was all Chad had to say as he snatched back the shot glass.

Before the Freeman girl could retaliate and continue complaining, Mindy rounded the corner with a sigh. "Hey, we're low on beer." She informed Amber whose eyes rolled in frustration.

"There's more in the basement. I'll go get some." Amber began to walk away only to stop mere feet from Pauline, who had already filled up her cup again. An inquisitive look appeared upon Amber's face. You sure Wes would appreciate you drinking so heavily tonight, Lina?"

Pauline gulped down yet another drink before pulling away the cup from her lips. "Don't start with me, Amber. I'm not in the mood." She said with a slight glare towards the girl.

She truly wasn't in the mood for Amber's attitude. With each drink she got closer and closer to forgetting about her friends death and that was all Pauline needed in that moment. She was sure Wes wouldn't mind given her reasoning.

Amber scoffed at the girl reply as she walked away towards the basement. Mindy walked her leave with a look of intrigue. "I'm gonna go with her." She informed her brother and friend before following behind the Freeman girl.

"Make sure she's not carrying any weapons. You may not come back." Pauline called out after her best friend, lowly chuckling into her cup as she took another sip. She surely wouldn't have said that had it not been for the alcohol clouding her decisions.

"What the fuck was that? You okay?" Chad asked with a wide eyed gaze as he advanced towards his friend. He had never seen her so under the influence before.

Pauline was usually the sober friend. In all their time as alcohol drinking teenagers, she'd always only ever taken a few sips while everyone else indulged. The taste has never really agreed with her though apparently that was no longer the case.

"I'm fine." Her words had begun to slur as the alcohol took affect. Though she said she was fine, her rage filled gaze told a different story. "One of our best friends is fucking dead but I'm fine. Thanks for asking, Chad."

Chad's gaze softened as the hurt in her voice jumped out at him. "Jumping down my throat isn't going to bring Wes back." He quietly muttered, the boy not wanting to upset her further.

The music continued to play around them, the volume so loud that each beat ran through their bodies with ease. A feeling of guilt overcame Pauline as she took in Chad's words. She hadn't meant to be a bitch especially to him but found herself unable to stop her emotions from getting the best of her.

Her once harsh glare faded as she released a sigh. "You're right. I'm sorry. I've just...been a little on edge around Amber these last few days. She's been acting really sketchy." She quietly admitted while setting aside the red solo cup.

"You reckon?" Curiosity painted across the boy's features. As he folded his arms across his chest, he then said, "I haven't really noticed anything different. What does Mindy say?"

Warmth spread through her body at once. "What makes you think I've told her anything?"

Chad deadpanned at the girl. Did she think he was stupid? "Lina, it's you. Of course you told her."
