“I'm done for the night." Skylar said the minute I entered the restaurant.
We both work at the Jiffy Meals, a popular fast food restaurant in Denver. I work as a part-time pizza delivery boy every weekends - specifically from evenings to nights while Skylar works as a part-time waitress.
Skylar is the same age and grade as me but we go to different schools. We're very good friends. In fact, we used to be an item. She was a Maxwell High student before her parents transferred her to the newest school in town a year ago. We dated back in junior years for six months before we eventually broke up.
We broke up when we realised we weren't in love. Although, I really like Skylar, I never had feelings for her. She's a funny, hilarious and lovely person to be with. With long flaming auburn hair, dazzling green eyes and a sculpted figure, there's no denying that Skylar is a stunning beauty. She has a long line of boys chasing after her like a lost puppy.
"I can give you a lift." I offered. My shift had finished and I just came back my last delivery.
She puffed and flipped off her hand in dismissal. "Don't worry about me. I had already called an Uber and he's on his way."
I notice something different about her. Her eyes were captivatingly beautiful and as dreamy as starry nights. She smiled at herself in a soft glow, as if a girl who just found love.
"Sky, what are you up to? You look different." I conceded.
"I'm going out on a super hot date with Richard Lambert." She quickly replied.
The Lambert family are rich beyond the dream of avarice. Naturally, they hold the title for being the most wealthiest family in Denver for generations. It's normal for rich kids to be spoilt brats and playboys. Eric Lockwood and Keith Basinger are the perfect examples but Richard is different. I've met him a couple times when I went out with my friends and he's really nice. Although, he had the looks and fame, he doesn't play around nor act like a spoilt brat. He prefers being isolated and more focused on his study.
"Cool." He's the best choice for Skylar, so far.
"Cool? It's awesome! I never thought I'll go on a date with him." Her eyes were wide, as if she still couldn't believe he asked her out.
"I think you guys are the perfect match. Good luck on your date."
Her phone starts to vibrate on the cold granite counter. "I think the Uber is here."
I looked at her confused. She's still dressed in her work outfit. "But you're still in your work outfit. Unless you want to go on your first date in it. It's fashionable." I joked.
She smacked me on my arm. "Shut up. I'm going to stop by a friend's house for a makeover. Bye dude." With a smile, she walked out of the restaurant.
I talked to the manager before calling it a day. I drove back home, eager to be alone and study before Monday roll in. Eden and Maya were watching some TV show when I arrived. I showered and changed before sitting on my chair in front of my reading table.
"This is a fantasy room for nerds. Your room looks like a library."
I stiffened at the sultry voice I know belonged to none of my family members. I closed my eyes, before opening and glancing at the wall clock. The time says 8:02pm. I must be dreaming because there's no way Daisy will appear out of the blue and talk to me like that.
"You're not dreaming, dude and I'm not a ghost. I'm right here behind you."
This time, I turned around. I felt a lightening crackle through my veins and time slowed down.
Daisy stood in the middle of the room, her eyes - framed by thick lashes - blazes as she stares around. She's dressed in a white crop top that barely cover her bra, a white knee length biker pants and her leather jacket tied around her hips. Her hair flowed in waves to adorn her glowing skin. I have to admit that she looks ravishing and natural tonight even if I can't tell her.
My mind finally cleared out and I came back to my senses. "What the heck? What are you doing here?"
"I'm here to see you." She casually replied.
I rushed to the door and flicked the lock on. I walked faster than my shadow to where she's standing. "Daisy, you know this is not the right place to talk, right?"
"Why not?" She asked, her brows bended in confusion.
"Because this is where I live." I answered in a hushed voice.
"And so?" She pouted her lips in a questioning way.
Something abruptly surged inside my brain. "How the fuck did you get in here?"
She bit her lower lip and smirked. "The good boy has a secret no one knows..."
I cover her mouth with my palm and push her until her body hit the wall but not in a harsh way when I hear footsteps ascend the stairs. She tried to push me away but I just degrade my weight on her. In all likelihood, I'm heavier than her. She can fight me but will never win me until I said so.
"Mom, one more TV show and we're off to bed!" We heard Eden yelled as she sprinted back downstairs.
I sighed in relief and closed my eyes for a brief moment. When I opened my eyes, Daisy's dazzling eyes were staring right into mine. Suddenly, I became conscious of our close we are. Her hot breathing is fanning with mine against my palm. The room's silent. We can only listen to our heavy breathing and nothing else. The intensity she brought out in me is hard to push aside. Simply being near her clouded my mind in a way I've never felt in other girls.
Daisy broke the staring contest when she grumbled into my palm. I released her and before I know, she pushed me off her.
"You son of a bitch!"
I placed a finger on my lips to silence her. She propped her hands on her hips and pressed her lips together firmly.
"How did you get in here?" I questioned again.
She shot me a dirty look "you dumb ass son if a bitch, you have an oak tree by your window. I climbed easily into your room. You're so dumb."
I glanced at the open window, where the a huge hundred year old oak tree stood mightily with whacking branches. One of the branches is directly next to my window. When we were young and mischievous, Maya and I often played on and around the the oak tree. We get ourselves injured most of the times and nothing stopped us from continuing until we eventually hit our teenage years.
"You can't be here."
"Why not?" She asked ambitiously.
"I don't want anyone to find out. They can walk in on us any moment."
"Why are you saying it like we're in a forbidden act? You can just introduce me to them. It will be easier for you to have someone by your side when you're going through a hard time." She sincerely said.
I sigh and massage the bridge of my nose with my fingers. "You know what? Let's go somewhere and talk. Any suggestion."
"The rooftop." She curtly replied before turning on her heels and walked away.
Like a professional hitchhiker, she return back to the oak tree and climb a higher branch with ease. Her flexible body moved from one branch to another before she made it to the branch crashing on our rooftop. It's hard to believe she's pregnant. I had no choice but to follow her. I climbed after then to the shingle roof. There, we sit on the roof ridge.
The only notion of light came from the moonlight and even her light is a blurry beam. The sky was dark and low, the air chilled with a low temperature. It marked the beginning of autumn with warm day temperatures and cold nights. Our neighborhood is dark and quiet except the once-in-a-while vehicles passing by the streets.
I noticed some of the neighbours had already started decorating their homes for Halloween. Halloween is in a week or two - I don't really know. It's not like I don't like Halloween. My family and I enjoy celebrating Halloween. My current issues are enough to sunk me into a deep endless sea of thoughts.
"Your nervousness and fears are trying to get the best of you. I think that's your problem." Daisy's voice pulled me out of my thoughts.
When my eyes found their way back to her, she was staring off space. Her milky blonde hair fell loose about her face, tousled. Her jacket is back on her body, serving as a sweater in the meantime.
"Why are you here?" Never have I imagined myself spending my time with the bad girl on the rooftop of my house while my parents and sisters are still inside.
She stared back at me. "You know exactly why I'm here."
I was such a dick. "How are you? The morning sickness?" How stupid I was to not offer consolation.
She shakes her head slowly, her waves bouncing. "It gradually subdued."
"Daisy, I think you should be more careful. You're in your first trimester and acting vibrant like someone who's not." I care about the baby. And her.
"Just because I'm pregnant doesn't means that I'm sick. Wait, don't tell me you're one of the cavemen that prefer a woman staying at home barefoot and pregnant?" Her nose scrunched in distaste.
"Of course not." That's disgusting. "Why would you say that?"
"Never mind."
"How did you come here?" Unless she came with an Uber, the street was empty.
"It doesn't matters. The baby and I are fine. We have to talk about when to divulge the news to our family and the public. And by public, I mean school, though I don't give a fuck about them."
"Have you told your parents?" She seems relaxed than I am, like she has the support she needed.
"It's the same, whether I tell them or not. I don't want to talk about them because I'm not ready to tell them yet." The way she said it hints the end of discussion about her family. I'm sure she feels guilty for adding more damage than she had already done even though she shows no remorse.
"Fine. We keep our mouth shut." I tried a couple of times of tell my family at Gran's yesterday but I couldn't. Whenever I gather the courage, I lost it when I see their beautiful smiles. I might have acted like a coward but the happiness of my family comes first.
"You made me come here to tell me nothing?" She stood up on the one feet wide roof ridge with outstretched arms.
One mistake and she'll slip and fall to her death. Possibly. "Let's go back inside. There's a high risk of falling off the the roof and bleeding to death."
She slides down the roof to the branch with me hot on her heels. She directly went down and got off the tree. I can't let her go back alone without a vehicle. The society is too dangerous for her and the baby.
"You can't go alone." I said as I follow her.
And then, I realised she actually came with her bike. She parked it in such a way that no one will notice - just behind the oak tree. She put on her helmet and mounted the bike. It roared back to life before she sped away without a second glance. I don't know whether I'll ever understand Daisy. One minute she's here and nice, the next she's bullying and kicking the shit out of others.
"I knew you were hiding something."
Fuck.
