πππ ππππ ππππ πππππππ, that was how Melanie felt about Outer Banks, she hadn't been here in a whole year.
After the cursed day, her family had left to England and had settled there to grieve their lost away from home.
Home wasn't home anymore, The Outer Banks were her home, her childhood, her safe place but not anymore.
Melanie didn't want to come back and she had been forced due to her mothers' surfboard business, she didn't really understand why they couldn't have done those business stuff online but they just said that she needed a good breath of the smell of the ocean water.
They had arrived there at 7 a.m which is way to early if you ask her. The moment she opened the door to her bedroom, she ran and threw herself on her king size bed.
She was exhausted from the flight and fell asleep in a matter of minute's. Her mothers were downstairs unpacking their bags and preparing dinner.
When Melanie woke up it had been an hour and a half, she decided to go downstairs and help her mothers after looking through her phone for a good 10 minutes.
Walking down the stairs, she could see that most of the bags were unpacked and neatly placed in their respective places, her mothers were expreme perfectionists.
They would always say that it was one of the things that they bonded over. Melanie waked into the kitchen and to the kitchen aisle and took an apple out of the fruit basket which was dumped with different fruits, she thought her mothers could have thrown them in.
She then walked out and started walking towards the living room where she thought she heard the mothers talking.
"No, it doesn't look good, maybe a lilac colour would be better-," Railey Fortini, a tall brunette woman who was one of her mothers said until she saw Melanie who just walked into the living room.
"Look who finally woke up, Melanie could you please tell your mother that cranberry red is a better colour than lilac, it would look fantastic on the wooden floor wouldn't it?" said Maria Fortini, the blonde woman was sitting on the said wooden floor looking up at her daughter.
Melanie walked in the living room and sat on the plastic covered L shaped couch, she looked at the two different colored mats and pointed at the lilac one.
"The lilac one does look better mom, it would match the curtains too," she said while looking and pointing to the lilac colored curtains.
"See, I'm always right when it comes to colour palette!" said Railey Fortini, smiling at her wife and daughter. She had been the most cheerful one when they were packing and on the way back to the Outer Banks.
She was trying to make the family more comfortable and happy by being more joyful even when she wasn't keen on coming here, she never wanted to remember the cursed day.
Melanie hadn't stopped thinking about how much pain was gonna come back to her when she was in the plane.
She wanted to know if she could ever come back and not feel hurt and angry while walking long the beach.
The morning the family had learned about the accident, Melanie had ran out and onto the beach where she kept running until she was at the secret spot. Her secret spot.
She would come here at this small section of the beach where there was a small cave where vines had grown like a shadow over the entrance.
She had stayed there for 2 hours until her mothers had started calling her non-stop fearing for their daughter.
Maria on the other hand had always had a hatred for the outer banks after the accident.
She had now come to terms with what happened and she hated the fact that she was scared to lose her daughter too to this place.
Melanie, who was still sitting on the sofa, looked at the old clock that was situated on the shelves on the walls on her right. It was now 9 a.m.
She thought of going to bed again but she knew she wouldn't be able to, going out was another option but would it be stranger since she hadn't been here in a year. Melanie didn't want to feel like a stranger to her own childhood home, she wanted to feel like she did a year ago before the unbearable day.
She wanted to go out and not feel like a complete stranger to her own home, she wanted to feel like freshman year Melanie. Maybe going out was a better choice.
"Can I go to the beach, I'll be gone for only 30 minutes ok I promise," she said looking eagerly at her mothers.
"I - look sweetheart I know you want to but maybe in 15 minutes ok at least after we've unpacked everything," replied Railey after looking at the clock too.
"Oh come one darling, let the girl live, she's doesn't want to be stuck in a house full of dust and plus we can then go out to eat after," said Maria after seeing the face her daughter was making.
Railey didn't want to let her daughter go out alone, she didn't want to let her go, she didn't want something to happen to her, she didn't want to repeat the same mistake with- it doesn't matter.
"I - Ok fine," signed Railey after being defeated by the two others who high fived each other.
πππππππ πππ up to her room and looked through her suitcases for an appropriate outfit as she was still in her pajamas. She opted for blue shorts and an acdc crop top.
She put her sandals on and grab her, the keychain to the house and property, and sunglasses.
Walking down the creeking stairs, Melanie past next to the living room and yelled a 'goodbye' and a 'I love you' to her mothers and after hearing them say it back, she walked out the door into her front yard.
She didn't know where to go, maybe she could go to the beach directly or she could walk around and see if anything really changed.
She didn't really want to walk around, too scared that the memories would come flooding back into her diminishing mind.
She was always scared of having to relive the horrible realisation and few days that followed. She never wanted to see the face her police had on when they told her and her mothers. Never again.
Melanie was now walking towards the silver lined gate that guarded the property, she came to a stop right in front of it and took out another key from the keychain.
She opened the gate and stepped onto the side of a dirt path that would lead onto the main road that was a 2 to 3 miles away, the left side was an open forest with beautiful flowers and vines, the right side was a sandy beach that belonged to the Fortinis and no it wasn't the beach she was going to.
Melanie now halfway through the pathway, she was listening to music, thinking about what her former friends had been doing while she was gone or what her former boyfriend who she broke up with before she left.
She was almost at the end of the path and onto the main road. Melanie new the way to her secret spot, she never forgot about it, she didn't want to either way it reminded her of her past, before the cursed day.
Birds were chirping and flying around into the graceful blue sky, one of the best things about the Outer Banks was the nature and weather. It was way better than the one in London, which was where the Fortinis left.
Blue skies, the sweet sound of birds and animals, the glowing sunlight was painting Melanie's skin. She was soaking in all the warmth from the sun, she was now on the main road and was walking towards the beach which was not far away.
Melanie wasn't very keen to see the secret spot again, she wanted to excited just like she was before, the rush of adrenaline when she used to run through the beach and into the small open cave, hearing the sound of the waves and beachy sounds. She wanted to feel like that angina and she was determined to do so.
Whiles those thoughts were crossing her mind, Melanie started running wanting to feel the adrenaline. She ran and ran until she reached the beach where she slowed down and started walking on the warm sand.
The beach was quiet that morning, it was peaceful even though the many people that lived near it. She loved that, the peacefulness of the blissful waves that were moving in a calming and bewitching movement.
Melanie used to come here everyday before school, even if it was only for a few minutes, she loved the morning glow on the blue filled sea and Melanie hated being late to school so she would wake up earlier.
Melanie had now arrived at the entrance of the cave, she pushed aside the vines and stepped inside the memory filled cave. The cave was exactly how it was when she left, it was beautiful more flowers and vines had grown which made it look breathtaking.
The cave was damped and humid, the delicate sunlight was coming through the vines. In the middle of the cave sat rocks that made up a small sitting area.
Melanie walked slowly towards the rocks and sat there, she could feel the cold air of the cave brush against her cheeks, she felt exactly like she used to and it felt great.
But the memories of Matt came rushing back the moment she thought about her freshman year where she used to come here more often...
