three // conversations from the dining room table
IT DIDN'T SURPRISE JOLIE THAT HER MOTHER hadn't given her the warmest of welcomes when she finally made her way back to her childhood home later that evening after visiting Gemma and the rest of SAMCRO.
A stiff hug from Della Unser as well as small disapproving glance at her clothes was all the older Unser daughter received before being told dinner would be done shortly and where so could go unpack her things until dinner was done.
Jolie looked back at her at dad before nodding at her mother's demands; because that's what it always was with Della Unser, a tight lipped smile forming her face. She hated being back in this house under her mother's judgmental gaze, knowing no matter what Jolie did the matriarch of the Unser home would never be proud of her.
"Give her a break, Della."
Jolie heard her dad sigh as she walked towards her childhood bedroom. It was always her dad that had her back whenever Della's wrath was on a warpath, and maybe that one was of the many reasons why Della and her oldest daughter never got along; her husband picked their daughter's side in every argument.
"I have to finish dinner, Wayne." Della scoffed before walking off towards the kitchen, slamming pots and pans down as she continued to cook away in the only part of the house she truly felt at peace.
The sickly Police Chief shook his head as he head as he heard Jolie's childhood bedroom door slam. He quickly pulled a joint out of his front pocket and lit it up, taking a deep inhale of the weed. If the cancer didn't kill him first then living with this two women again definitely would.
Jolie slammed the bedroom door behind her as her brown eyes gazed around the room. Of course it wasn't the same as she had left it โ she expected that, but any possible reminder of her was completely gone. It seemed as though Della got rid of anything that could tie Jolie back to this room or house.
A scoff left her lips as she walked towards the queen sized bed and sat down on it. The once pastel colored walls were now a boring white, all the posters she had up were all gone as well, along with her many photos of herself with SAMCRO and friends from high school. It made a sadness form in the pit of her stomach, and Jolie wondered how long did her mother wait before she gave a whole new makeover to the room โ cleaning it of Jolie.
"Of course she kept this picture." Jolie muttered as she stared at the old photo of Hale and herself sitting on the nightstand.
Everyone in Charming knew how bad Della Unser wanted her older daughter to be with David Hale. He was perfect in Della's eyes; everything a good son-in-law would be, but of course Jolie had once again failed her mother when she refused to date or marry Hale. She didn't want to become like Della; married to a cop and living in Charming her whole life โ resenting the children she would eventually have. That wasn't the life for her.
A soft knock on the door pulled Jolie from her thoughts. "Come in." She said, keeping her eyes on the door. At least it wasn't her mother. Della wouldn't have knocked.
"Hey, you left your suitcase in my jeep." David stood in the doorway with one hand on the back of his neck and the other holding Jolie's forgotten suitcase.
The brunette stood up from the bed, making her way towards a nervous looking Hale. "Thanks." She gave him a small appreciative smile before taking the suitcase from his hand.
A feeling of guilt overtook her as she stared at his face. Maybe she had been too rude earlier to him; he had been her best friend at one point in their lives.
"Look," Jolie sighed as she stretched at her eyebrow. "I'm โ
"David!" Della's cheerful voice interrupted Jolie, making the younger Unser woman roll her eyes at her mother's fakeness. "I'm so glad you're here! It's wonderful to see you." She pulled the Hale man into a hug, holding tightly onto him as though he was the one who had been gone for years.
"It's good to see you too, Della." Hale politely smiled as he kept his eyes on Jolie, noticing the annoyed look on her face. "I just had to drop Jolie's suitcase off. She forgot it earlier." He explained as though the short Unser woman was interrogating him.
Jolie rolled her brown eyes at his words. Hale always had to explain himself to her mother and she didn't understand why. Was he still trying to show how good of a son in law he could be?
"She doesn't care, Hale." Jolie muttered.
"Of course I care, Jolie." Della glared at her daughter as she released her tight grip on the Deputy. "Stay for dinner? It would be like old times. I'm sure Jolie would love it if you stayed."
Jolie could feel her mother's and David's eyes on her. She wanted to leave, to go back to Brooklyn and never fucking talk to her mother again, but that wasn't an option. She was thirty-four and yet the way her mother stared at her made her feel like a child again. She fucking hated it.
"Yeah. It would be wonderful." Jolie told him with a sarcastic smile on her face that her mother either didn't notice or chose to ignore.
"Sure." David agreed with a nod, giving Jolie an apologetic look before being dragged away.
_______
JOLIE SAT SILENTLY AT THE DINNER TABLE, eating her food and pretending to listen as her mother kept the conversation flowing enough for everyone.
In a way she was thankful for Hale for staying; that way her mother couldn't pick on her all night and question her about the choices she had made.
"So, David are you dating anyone?" Della questioned, causing Hale to choke on his drink while Jolie and Wayne just sat there unfazed.
"No." Hale shook his head. "I haven't really had the time to be honest." The Deputy shrugged at Della made a 'tsk' sound at him.
"You really should make the time, David. Jolie isn't dating anyone either you know. All she was doing in Brooklyn," Della spat the name with disgust. "was working too much and partying." The older Unser woman shook her head in disapproval.
"Della." Wayne warned as he stared at his wife. "It's no one's business about Jolie's dating life."
"Or lack there of." Della laughed. "She always dates these men who are less then. I mean, it's her first day back and you know where she goes, David? Her father thought it was a good idea for her to hangout with SAMCRO! Can you believe that?"
Jolie pursed her lips as she listened to her mother ranting about her life to David as though she wasn't right there. Every word coming out of Della's mouth made Jolie feel so small and question every choice she had ever made. It was truly her mother's superpower.
"I don't date, but I have a lot of sex." Jolie stated matter of factly, smirking as she watched shock and anger cross her mother's face. "Which I'm sure that's what David is doing too. It's not the 1950's anymore."
"Wayne! Did you just hear what your daughter said?!" Della's tone grew more and more high pitched with each word.
"Um, I thin I'm gonna get going." Hale spoke up as he quickly stood up from the table.
"That's probably for the best, Hale." Wayne sighed as Della continued to yell.
Jolie took Hale getting up from the table as her chance and quickly stood up too, her mother too distracted at yelling at her father to notice.
"Can you drop me off somewhere?" Jolie asked as they walked out of the dining room and away from Della Unser's loud voice.
"Where?" David raised an eyebrow at her as they exited the house together, walking towards his police jeep.
"TM."
A sigh left his lips, but he nodded and motioned for Jolie to get in the jeep. He knew it was pointless trying to keep Jolie away from SAMCRO. She was her father's daughter after all.
______
"YOU GOT A POLICE ESCORT, DOLL?" Tig laughed, raising an eyebrow as he watched Jolie exited Hale's jeep.
Jolie quickly thanked Hale and turned her attention onto the curly haired man with a smile on her face. "What can I say, the cops love me." She teased walking towards Tig.
A chuckle left Tig's lips as he threw an arm around her shoulder. "What are you doing back, doll?" Not that he wasn't happy to see her twice in one day, but he figured she would be spending time with Unser.
"Oh you know, my mom isn't really fond of me and the welcome home dinner wasn't great. Hale showed up and I told my mom I have a lot of sex, but don't date. You know, the usual family dinner conversations." Jolie waved her hand dismissively as she stared into Tig's bright blue eyes.
"I'm sorry, doll." Tig's tone was genuine as he placed a kiss on the top of Jolie's head. "But, uh, that sex thing I can help you out with if you want." He wink, hoping to lighten the mood and cheer her up.
"You'll be the first to know, babe." Jolie winked as they made their way towards the clubhouse with Tig's around still around her shoulder.
"I better be." Tig grinned.
