o n e // i've come home
IT was another two weeks before Jolie could finally get everything in order and book a one way ticket to Charming. A place she had promised herself she would never live in again, but life had other plans for her it seemed.
It had only taken her a few hours to pack up her small Brooklyn apartment, most of her stuff would be going into storage anyway. It's not like she needed much in Charming besides her clothes and a few other things. Luckily her landlord had given her a break by letting Jolie out of her lease a few months early—he had a niece that needed an apartment so it was a win-win situation.
The Unser woman also already had an interview set up at St Thomas for next week. It seemed her shitty hometown was still in need of nurses. What a perfect time for her to move back home, right?
A sadness creeped into her body as her brown eyes took in the empty apartment. This place had been her home for the last ten years, right after she graduated from nursing school. Jolie could remember ever scuff mark on the wood floors, every neighbor who had come and gone, and all hung over afternoons she spent on the living room. It felt like a death leaving this place behind, but it was for her dad—her rock. She'd do anything for him.
A soft sigh fell from Jolie's lips as grabbed her suitcase, placing the key on the counter before exiting the apartment with tears in her eyes.
"JFK?" The taxi cab driver questioned as smoke poured from his mouth.
Jolie nodded as she slid into the taxi, placing her suitcase on the sticky leather seat next to her. "Yes, please." She answered as she quickly wiped at her eyes.

JOLIE didn't call her mom once the plane landed like Della had demanded of her. No, instead she sent a text letting her know which resulted in a passive aggressive response from the matriarch asking why Jolie hadn't called instead of texting, because Della Unser hated texting.
A sigh left Jolie's tired lips. She had only been in California for twenty minutes and already she felt like a child being scolded once again by her mom for just existing.
After Della had stopped with her passive aggression she finally let Jolie know that someone would be there to pick her up from the airport. Of course she didn't say who so that left Jolie standing outside in the California heat—waiting.
"Welcome fucking home, Jolie." A bitter scoff fell from her lips as she stood there waiting—for who exactly though? She didn't know.
Her mom didn't share information with her often. It was like trying to get information out of the government with Della Unser. Hell, Jolie still didn't know how sick her dad was and what was wrong with him. All her mom said was that they'd talk about it once she got to Charming. It was infuriating, but that's exactly who Della Unser was, and there was no changing her.
"Jolie?"
Her dark eyes snapped up from her phone to the sound of her name being called. Jolie furrowed her eyebrows as she looked at the man standing in front of her. She had to refrain from rolling her eyes at him. No, not him actually but the situation itself and of course that her mother would do this.
"Hale." Jolie greeted as she stared at Charming PD's very own Deputy Chief. "I'm guessing you're my ride? How'd my mom rope you into this one?" She raised an eyebrow at him as he grabbed her suitcase.
A small chuckle came from David Hale's lips as he started walking towards his police car with Jolie's suitcase in his hand. He was surprised when Unser had told him that the oldest Unser daughter was moving back home, but with Wayne's cancer diagnosis it shouldn't have surprised him that much.
Everyone in Charming knew that Jolie Unser would do anything for her father. If it was her mother she'd probably would of stayed in New York, though Della would of preferred that too.
"It's nice to see you too, Jolie." Hale said with sarcasm as he tossed her suitcase into the back of the car. "Della didn't rope me into anything. I offered to come pick you up." He stated matter of factly as they slid into the car. "I thought it would be nice to catch up with an old friend."
A scoff left her lips at Hale's words. Sure, they were friends—that much was true. Jolie did have a friendship at one point in time with David Hale, but once they got older things changed. It also didn't help that Della pushed so hard for Jolie and David to become a couple that it made Jolie push him away even more.
When Jolie left for New York she didn't even say goodbye to Hale, which of course earned herself an earful from her mother about how incredibly rude and selfish that was of her. Maybe her mother had been right about that one thing, but Jolie would never admit that to anyone.
"Well, thanks for picking me up." The dark haired woman said she placed a small smile on her face.
"No problem." He smiled as he pulled away from the curb.
"So, do you know how sick my dad is?" Jolie questioned after a moment. She knew in a few hours she would find out, but she wanted to know right now. It had been two weeks since her mom had called and announced her dad's sickness and yet she knew nothing.
Hale kept his eyes on the road as he remained silent for a moment. "It's not really my place to tell you, Jolie." He finally said as he quickly glanced at the dark haired woman.
A small sigh fell from her lips as she rested her head against the cool glass of the window. It was going to be a long day.
Jolie could feel it in her bones.
——
THE Main Street of Charming passed by as Jolie stared out the window. A nostalgic feeling filling her body. The Unser woman had always hated her hometown, but whenever she did come home it filled her with a infinite sadness that she couldn't explain.
"This place never changes." Jolie stated matter of factly as she watched the Charming police station come into her view.
"It's definitely no New York City." David stated as he pulled into the police station. "Your mom told me to bring you here." He said, noticing the confusion crossing her face.
"The people never change either." She muttered before quickly exiting the vehicle, slamming the door harshly as she did so.
Jolie made her way towards the police station, not caring that she had left David behind or that her suitcase was still inside the car. She wanted to see her dad. It had been too long since she last saw him, and she needed to know what was wrong with him.
The police station looked the same as it had ten years ago she noticed once she entered it. It suddenly felt like Jolie had stepped into a Time Machine and it was starting to give her a headache.
"Hey, Elgee." Jolie smiled at the blonde officer behind the desk. "Dad in his office?" She questioned as though it hadn't been more than five years since she was last there.
"Uh, yeah." The blonde nodded.
"Thanks!" She yelled already halfway down the hall towards the Chief's office.
Jolie didn't even bother to knock on her dad's door seeing as it was already open. She stood in the doorway for a moment staring at him though. He looked much older than last time she visited and it was visible that he was sick. He looked so tired and his skin looked off.
Jolie knew by looking at him that whatever was wrong with him was bad.
"Dad." Jolie could feel tears forming in her eyes as she practically run towards him, throwing her arms around him.
It took Wayne a moment to register that his daughter was here and hugging him, but when he did he held onto her tightly.
"I'm okay, Jolie." Wayne promised his daughter as her sniffles reached his ears. "I promise." He couldn't promise her though. Wayne knew the cancer in his body was eating away at him, but he couldn't stand to hear his daughter cry. "Let's go get something to eat and we'll talk."
Jolie nodded as she released her tight grip on her dad and wiped at her watery eyes. They would eat at their favorite diner, talk about everything, and everything would be just like old times.
Right?
