TWO YEARS AGO

"Jungkook-ah, what is it?" You giggled, hands reaching up to pat his warm ones that covered your eyes. He shushed you in response, kissing you quickly on the cheek as a small apology for making you wait.

You smiled as you piped down, just deciding to let him take charge for the last time he pulled something like this, he was on one knee with a ring. His hands slip from your eyes to your waist, guiding you through the unknown.

It's odd how you could completely trust him to never let you fall.

He finally stopped, his shoulder brushing up against yours as he swiftly spun to be in front of you. "Open," he whispered, his tone of voice indicating a toothy grin and squeak of excitement.

You let your eyes open, your gaze flitting from his face to the envelope in his hands. Your excitement simpered down to slight curiosity, hands shaking as you ripped open the paper, barely acknowledging his fond smile as he watched you.

Your lips pushed themselves out into a pout as you pulled out two tickets, flipping them over to read what was on it. "Iceland," you muttered breathlessly, eyes welling up with tears as your hand flew to your mouth.

"Yep," he confirmed, popping his 'p.' "We, my lovely, are going to Iceland to celebrate our engagement. I figured it'd be more memorable if we went somewhere that you've always wanted to go—"

You cut him off with a kiss, smiling wildly as he pulled away with a sigh, too drawn in by your charm to even finish his sentence.

*

"Having fun?" He murmured into the skin of your neck, smiling peacefully at the look of awe in your sparkling eyes. You nodded, barely sparing him a glance as the scenery captured your heart. Funny how it had been over three weeks yet it still managed to leave you breathless.

You never wanted to leave, finding that you felt quite content with how perfect things were between both you and Jungkook.

That night as he snuggled into your side, a sharp pain elicited from the side of your head, waking you up from your sleep. You carefully peeled yourself off him and stumbled to the bathroom, finding it hard to see and balance.

Something was terribly wrong and it didn't take a genius to figure that out.

You had always known about your possible run in with brain cancer. Your grandparents were both unfortunately ridden with it, doctors certain it would pass down to you. You never thought that it'd be this early though.

You glanced at Jungkook through your tears, heart ripping at the thought of him finding out and leaving you. Leaving you rid him of the pain of losing you entirely. You sobbed into your hands, torn between what to do.

The next morning, Jungkook proposed an idea to you, bouncing on the balls of his feet as you struggled to get out of bed. "We can go to the Geothermal Lagoon today! It'd be so fun!"

You loved seeing him so happy. It always meant that his little bunny smile would pop out. Smiling weakly, you beckoned him over to you, resting your forehead on his chest when he was within reach.

"I'm sorry, baby. I'd love to, honestly. But I think I'm a little sick," you whispered, clutching onto his shirt as a small but still painful headache came over you. He pressed his hand to your head, concern spiking through him.

"Want to go to a doctor?" He posed the question in a way that let you know that you'd be going even if you said no so you hummed in approval, feeling his lips meet the top of your head.

You purposely made Jungkook sit in the waiting room during your meeting, making sure the boy only thought it was a quick check up. He'd be devastated if he were in the stuffy room that had no colour and a deep sense of sadness with you.

You would've liked his support though.

"Miss. Y/N. I am so sorry to have to ruin your holiday with this news but you have, unfortunately, been diagnosed with brain cancer."

You didn't listen to anything else the doctor said, the ringing in your eyes intensifying into a dull ache pulsing throughout your head. You could only think of your fiancée who was waiting patiently for you outside, ready to hug you when you got out and take care of your until you got better.

What if he knew that it wasn't just a flu?

Would he leave me?

How do I tell Jungkook in the first place?

You decided against telling him while in the car, listening to him animatedly illustrate how he was going to take care of you. You didn't want to ruin his holiday so you smiled, muttering about how pleasant his ideas sounded.

Your headaches had only gotten worse from there and it had gotten harder and harder for you to hide it from Jungkook. Thankfully, the boy was always distracted with something or other. After a long six weeks in Iceland, it was time to leave.

Your heart felt heavy as you watched the lush green turn into pale blue and not because you were leaving such a beautiful place but because you're leaving with a secret that could kill you. You subconsciously tightened your hold on Jungkook's hand, keeping your head angled away from him so he couldn't see your tears.

Your relationship ended shortly after that, your constant outings and secret phone calls getting to Jungkook. He begged you to tell him what was happening, begged you to say you love him and that it'll all be fine.

But you couldn't.

Instead, you told him you were sorry for wasting his time. You told him that you love him more than anyone ever could and to remember all the fun times you had with each other.

He left that night in tears, unable to hear your pleads for him to come back as he got in his car and drove as far away as possible.

PRESENT DAY

The young girl admires the ring on her finger, or more specifically the diamond resting on it. It must've cost Jungkook a fortune and she appreciates him acknowledging her love for expensive things.

He's amazing.

"Ara?" She spins at the mention of her name, flashing her fiancée a toothy grin as he wraps her in his arms, pressing light kisses to her neck.

"Hi, Kookie," she giggles, closing her eyes in contentment. He winces slightly at the nickname, his mind envisioning your glowing smile instead of Ara's. With a shake of his head, he sighs. He wonder what you're up to now and if you've moved on.

The girl in his arms is a mere replacement of the love you showered him with. She will never be you and will never be what he wants but he's praying that she can fill the hole in his heart.

He hasn't moved on and it's clear. He just hopes that telling himself that he has will make it a reality.

He finally releases her and kisses her forehead, his signal for leaving to work. She waves brightly at him from the doorway, slamming it shut when he disappears down the driveway.

He's distracted as he drives to work, finger restlessly tapping on the rubber of the steering wheel. He probably should see you, it's been such a long time. Swerving his car to the right, he changes course to your parents' house, smiling with his bottom lip in between his teeth the entire way.

It's a little awkward as he waits patiently for someone to answer his knock, thoughts racing on what he could possibly say should you answer the door. Would he hug you? Would he cry? Or would he just smile, hoping you'd pull him in like you always did?

His heart beat quickens at the sound of the door opening, his hope deflating by the slightest margin when he sees your mother standing before him.

"Jungkook," she murmurs as if he's the best thing she's seen all day. "How can I help you, dear?"

"Is Y/N around?" He notices the way your mother's shoulders droop, her smile morphing into a thin lipped frown.

"Oh sweetheart, she didn't tell you anything, did she?"

Jungkook shakes his head, hating the feeling of fear crawling up his spine slowly. Your mother sighs, clasping his hand tightly in hers. "She's in hospital, Jungkook. She got diagnosed with brain cancer two years ago."

He angrily swipes at his eyes, every single thing clicking into place. He still loves you, he's sure of it. Brain cancer or not, you're still the same Y/N he's dreamt about for the past two years. He parks his car hastily and storms into the hospital, thanking the receptionist in a rush as he sprints to your room.

A doctor emerges from it, sadness in his composure. His gaze meets Jungkook's, softening a little at the boy's panicked state. "Are you here for Y/N?"

He nods.

"You can go in. She's a fighter, that one. I presume you're Jungkook? She talks about you like you're the world."

Jungkook smiles at that, letting some tears roll down his cheeks.

"You better hurry up and go in. I want her to see you before she passes on."

"Passes?" There's a crack in his voice, much like the one in his heart.

"I'm sorry. She can't hold on forever."

He sits beside your bed, smiling warmly at you as you follow him with your eyes, a soft smile on your face. "You came," you whisper, reaching out for his hand. He wastes no time in interlocking his fingers around yours, holding your hand up to his lips.

"I'm sorry I didn't tell you, Kookie. I meant to, I swear, but I didn't want to hurt you."

He nods, unable to trust himself with words.

"I still love you," you mumble, hopefully looking at him. He raises his head with these words, delicately tracing your jawline with his fingers.

"I never stopped loving you."

It's with that that the two of you descend into silence, your hand carding through his hair as the motion lulls him to sleep. Smiling at the sight of your beloved beside you, as you always wished he would be, you lean over and plant a kiss on his head.

My Jungkook, you think to yourself as your breathing become laboured. Don't forget me, okay? My love for you will shine up in the stars. Goodbye, my dear.
