PRESENT, SEATTLE

๐Ž๐œ๐ญ๐จ๐›๐ž๐ซ ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ“

The sliding doors of the hospital opened as I walked through them. I glanced around at the big hospital so much different from the one in New York. I took a breath and walked towards the couple, laughing together.

My gaze landed on my brother, and I quickly glanced behind myself because I knew I had little time as a certain redhead woman had followed me from New York.

I cleared my throat, and my brother turned around. His eyes widened. "Derek."

"Rae," Derek gawked in shock. "What are you doing here?"

I glanced around him to the dirty blonde staring at me from his side. "I'm sorry, who are you?"

"Meredith." The blonde answered.

I raised a brow. "Meredith?" My eyes landed on my brother, who couldn't meet my gaze. I half turned to find a redhead walking towards us. "Oh, this should be good."

"Meredith." Derek sighed with sadness in his eyes. "I'm so sorry." He turned his gaze to the redhead. "Addison, what are you doing here?"

"You'd know if you'd bothered to return any of my phone calls," Addison explained. She turned her gaze to Meredith. "Hi, I'm Addison Shepherd."

Meredith took her hand, shaking it. "Shepherd?"

"And you must be the woman who's been screwing my husband," Addison accused, letting Meredith's hand go.

I looked at Meredith and felt for her as hurt washed over her face as the words fell out of Addison's lips.

My brother felt betrayed by Addison when she cheated on him, but at that moment, Meredith looked more betrayed. I could tell from how my brother reached for her, but Meredith shrugged him off before grabbing her bag and rushing out of the hospital, leaving me, my brother, and his wife to look after her.

"Your hair's different," Addison said, bringing my eyes from Meredith's retreating figure.

"A lot of things are different," Derek grumbled.

"It's longer. I like it." She ran her fingers through several strands before Derek pushed her hand away. "It's very Russell Crowe."

He turned his gaze to me. "What are you doing here, Rae?"

I sighed. "Can't you be happy to see me and leave it at that?"

"No," Derek replied, narrowing his brows. "Not when my little sister shows up in Seattle when she's supposed to be in New York. Does Mom even know you're gone?"

"No," Addison answered for her. "She ran away."

I gave Derek a sheepish smile. "Surprise."

"You ran away," Derek shouted.

I expected this type of reaction and crossed my arms. "It's not a big deal."

"Not a big deal," Derek fumed. He turned his gaze to Addison. "What are you doing here?"

"What are you doing here?" Addison repeated. "You just pick up and leave everythingโ€”your house, your practice, your friends? You had a life in Manhattan."

"Had." Derek countered.

I shook my head at my brother and his wife.

It was always like this when they argued, and once again, I became invisible. I sat at one of the chairs, picking up a magazine before crossing my leg over the other.

"And now you have a girlfriend in Seattle," Addison claimed with a clenched jaw. "She seems...sweet."

"The ice you're onโ€”thin," Derek told her angrily.

"She's young. That whole wide-eyed, 'ooh he's a brain surgeon' thing happening, but still sweet, which is what you were going for, right?" Addison added. "The anti-Addison?"

He walked towards me. "You need to call Mom." I shook my head, ignoring him, and flipped through the Cosmo as Derek turned his gaze to Addison. "If you came out here to try and win me back, you can forget about it."

"I did." Addison walked towards him. "I flew all the way across the country to reminisce over wedding photos, get drunk, fall into bed, and make you realize you can't live without me."

I had enough of them arguing, knowing that neither would relent, so I stood, grabbing my bag from the floor and glancing between my brother and Addison as they glared at each other getting ready to leave if they didn't stop.

"Relax, Derek," Addison told him. "I'm here for work. I'm helming the T.T.T.S. case you guys admitted last week, and from Richard's briefing, I should beโ€”"

Derek furrowed his brows. "Richard knew you were coming out here?"

"He asked me to come," Addison answered. She glanced at me, and I shook my head with wide eyes. "He asked both of us to come. Didn't he tell you?"

I grumbled. "Thanks, Addison."

"No, he didn't," Derek muttered.

I could hear the hurt in his voice and avoided his gaze.

"Hmm." Addison looked Derek up and down. "Well, surprise." She walked towards him and whispered, "The hair, though...you know I've always had a thing for Russell Crowe."

I felt Derek's gaze on me. "He asked me if I want to transfer and finish my residency here."

"I still don't understand how you ran away," Derek inquired, walking towards me.

I felt fear wade through me, and images of a man who had haunted my nightmares since I was ten replayed in the back of my mind. I looked into his eyes and lied. "I missed you."

"Oh," Derek breathed. "Why didn't you tell mom?"

I rubbed my forehead. "Because mom wasn't home, and I thought transferring would be better."

"Okay, we'll figure it out tomorrow," Derek told me, pulling me to his side. "Please tell me you didn't just bring one bag."

I shook my head and walked with him towards the doors, grabbing my bag on my shoulder. "No, the rest of my bags are at a hotel." I glanced up at my brother. "So, how are you going to fix things with your girlfriend."

"I don't know, Rae." Derek sighed.

I rubbed his back. "It's a shame. I like her."

...โ˜ค...

"Stop," Meredith demanded.

"What?" Derek asked, rushing after her.

I strolled behind them and rolled my eyes as the rain drenched me to my core.

"You're stalking me," Meredith explained. "Stop it."

"Did we not communicate last night?" Derek asked.

"Yes," Meredith answered.

Derek stared at Meredith. "Did you hear what I was saying?"

"Your wife screwed your best friend," Meredith replied.

"And then, from that point on, she no longer existed to me anymore," Derek explained.

I lift the hood of my jacket, blocking my dark brown hair from the rain.

"You had marital amnesia." Meredith pointed out.

"No," Derek said. "I bared my soul to you last night."

I stopped beside my brother as Meredith whipped around to face us.

"It's not enough," Meredith told him as her gaze lingered on me.

"How can that not be enough?" Derek asked, not understanding.

"When you waited two months to tell me, and I had to find out by her showing up, all leggy and fabulous, and telling me herself?" Meredith ranted, whipping around to face him. "You pulled the plug. I'm a sink with an open drain. Anything you say runs right out. There is no 'enough.'"

I pat my brother on his shoulder. "Are you going to be okay?"

"I don't know." Derek sighed.

I walked into the hospital and glanced at the elevator. I turned to see him staring at Meredith's retreating figure with pain in his eyes. "Want to have lunch?"

"Yeah," Derek said with a fake smile.

I lifted to my tiptoes and placed a kiss on his cheek. I pulled back to stare at him. "Give her some space. It's a lot to accept."

I rushed towards the elevator and slipped through the doors as they closed. I gripped my bag and rested against the wall of the elevator. I could feel a piercing gaze on me and lifted my eyes to see Meredith glaring at me.

I lift a brow. "Can I help you?"

"Are you another secret mistress that I don't know about?" Meredith asked.

I smiled at Meredith, lowering my hood. "That's cute."

"Did she just call you cute?" A black curly-haired girl said beside her.

I cocked my head to the side. "Look, it's not what it looks like."

"What it looks like is that you're screwing him after he broke up with her?" A blonde in a pink jacket said.

I didn't have time for this. "He's not my type."

The elevator doors opened, and I followed Meredith and the others I assumed were her friends. I walked into the locker room and glanced around, waiting for my resident.

"Great." A voice called out. "You're here."

I whipped my gaze around to see a short woman with short brown hair standing behind me. "Bailey."

"And you must be Shepherd." Bailey sighed.

"Shepherd." An echo of voices said from behind me.

I grabbed my badge from Bailey and my lab coat. I turned to face Meredith and her friends. "Rayne Shepherd." I walked towards my locker on the other side of Meredith's. I opened it and took off my coat. "Derek's my brother."

"Derek's your brother?" The blonde gaped.

"I think that's what I just said," I told her.

I changed as I felt shocked gazes on my back, and I closed my locker. I rolled my eyes at them and walked over to Bailey.

"I don't have all day," Bailey told the other interns, who scrambled to get into their blue scrubs.

I like her.

...โ˜ค...

I sat at a table in the cafeteria and stabbed my salad angrily as Derek missed lunch because of surgery. I reviewed my phone and read the texts to pass the time. I smiled at my mother's text and texted her back.

I glanced up to find Meredith and her friends taking seats around me. I lifted a brow at them, not understanding why they were sitting with me when there were other tables available.

"Hey, George." A ginger-haired nurse said.

"Hey," Geroge said, ignoring her as he sat down. I stared at him as he glanced around the table at his friends. "What?"

I cleared my throat. "Why are you guys sitting here?"

"You new here," Meredith answered. I nodded as she continued. "It was Izzie's idea."

I glanced at the other blonde. "Okay." I leaned back in my chair, taking a bite of the apple in my hand.

"George, she was trying to make up with you," Meredith explained, turning her gaze back on the guy with short curly hair. "You should go eat with her."

"No." George shook his head. "No, I shouldn't."

"She's cute and likes you," Izzie said, opening her salad. "You shouldn't let a little syph get in the way."

I sipped my water and leaned back in the chair, finishing the apple.

"It's not the syph." George denied.

"It's so the syph," Cristina smirked.

"It's not the syph," George glared at Cristina.

I sighed. "What is it then?" George turned his gaze to her. "If I'm here, I'm going to talk."

George avoided his friend's gaze as he fidgeted with his fingers.

"Oh," Izzie muttered, taking a bite from her salad.

"What?" Meredith wondered. George shrugged as I watched him grab his fork. "What is it? Out with it."

"There's this other girl," Izzie answered.

I bit my lip, trying to stop a smile as George yelled, "Izzie."

"Other girl?" Cristina echoed, leaning in. "You have another girl?"

"He hasn't told her yet that he likes her." Izzie elaborated.

"Izzie," George complained. "We are not in high school."

A small smile graced my lips. "You have a crush."

"I do not have a crush." George denied. "It is a thing. A very personal thing." He stabbed his salad. "One day, I'd like to build on this thing with this other girlโ€”woman. She's all woman."

I nodded, not believing a word he said. "That's adorable."

Meredith grabbed his fork and slammed it on the table. "What are you doing?"

"I was trying to eatโ€”" George started with wide eyes.

"No George with Olivia? What are you doing with Olivia?" Meredith interrupted, picking up the fork and pointing it at him.

I grabbed the fork from her hand and set it on the table away from Meredith, who looked ready to stab George in the eye.

"Oh, nothing," George confessed.

"You're letting her think you're emotionally available." Meredith ranted. "You're letting her think she has a chance." She picked up George's knife and pointed at him. "And there is nothing worse in the world than thinking you have a chance when you really don't."

I took the knife that Meredith picked up out of her hand.

She's really violence.

"Meredith is right," Cristina agreed. "Tell her there's someone else. Tell her why, George. I mean, at least give her a chance to have some feelings about it, for God's sake!"

"Why are you yelling at me?" George whispered.

I took another sip. "Because she's pregnant."

Meredith and Cristina widened their eyes at me.

It was a joke.

"No, because of the estrogen, Geroge." Cristina countered. "Because of all the estrogen."

I take it back. Definitely pregnant.

I stood and glanced at my phone as it vibrated in my hand. "Okay. I'll see you guys later."

I walked out of the cafeteria and shoved my phone in the pocket of my scrubs.

...โ˜ค...

"Oh, you are stupid." Cristina groaned. "Oh god."

I jogged beside Cristina and glared at Meredith. "ะœั€ะฐะทั ั‚ะต."

Meredith thought having Cristina and me run before work would be great. I had no choice as I was waiting to move into my apartment later that day after my shift. I loved my brother but couldn't live in his trailer for one more day.

Not another fucking day.

"You're a stupid, evil sadist, and I want to kill you!" Cristina moaned, hunched over.

"Endorphins are good." Meredith breathed, running in place. "Endorphins are mood elevators. This is supposed to make us feel better."

I stopped and leaned over, placing my hands on my thighs. "You're ะ›ัƒะด."

"Oh god," Cristina complained, holding her hip on her side. "Do you feel better?"

I dropped to the grass, placing my head between my legs.

"I'm stupid." Meredith voiced.

"Slutty mistress." Cristina spat.

"Pregnant whore." Meredith countered.

"Sleeping with our bosses was a great idea." Cristina groaned, leaning over and putting her hands on her thighs.

I lay on the grass and could feel my heart beating through my chest. "I slept with my brother's best friend." Meredith and Cristina raised a brow at me. "Yes, the one that slept with Addison."

"Damn." Cristina breathed.

And if Derek ever finds out, I think he'll kill me.

"You know what's ruin for me." Meredith shared, resting her hands on her thighs. "Ferry boats. I used to love ferry boats. And Derek's got a thing for ferry boats."

I nodded. "He does."

"Now, every time I see a freakin' ferry boatโ€”" Meredith grumbled.

"You know what's ruin for me," Cristina raged. "Coronary artery bypass grafts and aortic aneurysms. God, I used to love aortic aneurysms."

"Rayne?" Meredith inquired.

I sighed, staring at the blue sky as Cristina fell to the ground beside me. "Leather jackets." Meredith fell to the ground on my other side. "I loved leather jackets."

"Have you cried yet?" Meredith asked.

Cristina shook her head. "Do you think we'd feel better if we cried? You know, just like let it out?"

"Probably, yeah," Meredith answered.

I scoffed. "Hell no."

It didn't make me feel better at all.

"She's right." Cristina pointed out. "Let's jog."

It only took me three hours to make it to Seattle Grace. I leaned against my locker, looking at my unanswered texts. I could hear a giggle and lifted my gaze to see Izzie with a smile on her face talking to Alex.

"What is she doing?" Cristina asked.

"She's hanging out with Alex," George mumbled.

"Why?" Cristina wondered.

I pushed off my locker, grabbing my badge. "She's flirting." George whipped his head towards me. "Look, she places her hand on his arm." Izzie held her hand on Alex's arm and lightly pushed him while laughing. "She laughing at something funny he said, which I highly doubt was."

"Make the lambs stop screaming," George whispered.

All I could do was raise a brow at him and close my locker door.

...โ˜ค...

I stood in the OR with Cristina as Burke cut Mr. Gaston open. I glanced at my friend, who looked pale as Burke operated.

"The tumor has infiltrated the pericardium," Burke announced. His gaze turned to Cristina. "Yang." I placed my hand on Cristina's back as she swayed slowly from side to side. "Yang?"

"What? Sorry." Cristina apologized breathlessly.

"Is my surgery interfering with your daydreaming?" Burke wondered.

Cristina shook her head. "No. Sorry."

I glanced at Cristina with worry. "Are you okay?"

"I'mโ€”fine." Cristina gasped.

A few minutes pass, and I can tell Cristina is getting worse. I stared at the sweat collecting on her brow and the short breaths she took through her mask.

"There is an arrhythmia when I press down on the tumor." Burke declared. "That is a sign of what, Yang?"

"Uh, it's a sign ofโ€”it's an sโ€”a sign that the tumor has infiltrated the pericardium." Cristina groaned.

Burke glanced at Mr. Gaston's opened chest. "Possibilities?"

"I'mโ€”I'm sorry." Cristina groaned.

I cleared my throat. "A tear in the outer muscle of the heart." Burke turned his gaze to me. "The answer."

"Thank you..." Burke started.

I stared at him. "Shepherd."

"Thank you, Shepherd," Burke noted. "Do your homework, Yang."

I turned my gaze to Cristina as her eyes rolled into the back of her head, and she fell to the ground. I dropped beside her and rolled her onto her back. I pressed my finger against Cristina's neck, checking for a pulse, and found a faint one.

"Somebody help her," Burke yelled.

I glanced around her. "I need a gurney now!" Nurses and residents ran out of the OR doors. "Page Addison."

"What?" Burke asked.

I ignored him as Bailey and Izzie rushed into the room. "Lift with me."

I lifted Cristina onto a gurney with their help as they moved out of the OR and down the hall. I removed her mask as Izzie put an oxygen mask over Cristina's mouth.

"How did you know to page Addison?" Izzie asked.

I sighed and glanced to see Cristina awake and nod her head. "Because she's pregnant."

"Uh, her pulse is racing. I need her on a monitor to get a B.P.," Bailey ordered. "Also, I want her started on a liter of L.R. wide open. Izzie, find Addison Shepherd and be discreet."

I waited until the elevator doors closed on Izzie and scrunched my brows, looking at my friend as Bailey turned her gaze on me. "Yes."

"You have that look on your face that you know what's wrong with her," Bailey explained. "So I want to know what you got."

I put my hand on Cristina's stomach and applied pressure as a groan escaped Cristina's lips. I pulled my hand back. "I need an ultrasound to be sure."

"Shepherd, your stalling." Bailey pointed out.

I sighed. "Extrauterine pregnancy."

"Let's hope your wrong for her sake." Bailey sighed as the elevator doors opened.

It only took Addison five minutes to find Bailey and me in pre-op with Cristina, who was coming in and out of consciousness. A nurse had changed Cristina into a gown as I placed my hand on her head, opening her eyes to check her pupils, trying to get Cristina to focus.

"Cristina." I voiced. Cristina's eyes glazed over. "We're losing her."

"Oh, man." Addison sighed. "You see that? It was an extrauterine pregnancy." Bailey whipped her gaze on me. "The tube burst. She's bleeding out."

"How were you right?" Bailey wondered in disbelief.

Addison cleared her throat. "Rayne did an internship at my practice during college. She knows what to look for."

It didn't take long to get Cristina into an OR as I stood across from Addison, not feeling great to see my friend cut open at the waist. I took a deep breath to still my nerves as I held retractors keeping Cristina's incision open.

"She's going to be okay, right?" Izzie asked beside Addison.

"How attached was she to this pregnancy?" Addison wondered.

I exhaled. "I don't know. I only found out a couple of days ago."

"She's a pretty private person," Izzie offered.

"She's lost a lot of blood," Addison informed. "But I got it from here." I turned my gaze to Bailey, who held Cristina's head. "Dr. Bailey, you must have surgery or two of your own today."

"I'm fine right here," Bailey claimed.

Who's going to tell Meredith?

A/N: THE FIRST CHAPTER IS HERE!!!

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR 171 READS.

Especially since I just published it today.

I'm so excited to start this book. If you can't tell, this will be a brother's best friend romance, and I haven't written one before, so it will be fun developing Mark and Rayne's relationship for you guys.

I know I have a lot of books that are still incomplete but don't worry, I'm still planning on writing them.

I don't know how many books I will make this series, but it will depend on when Grey's Anatomy decides that they want to end. Which I'll be somewhat sad about when they do.

THANK YOU TO 547 FOLLOWERS.

Anyway, I hope you guys like it.

QUESTIONS: What did you guys like about this chapter? What are you looking forward to in season 2?
