PRESENT, SEATTLE
๐๐๐ง๐ฎ๐๐ซ๐ฒ ๐๐๐๐
One word.
A single word could change my whole life.
I bit my nails as I waited for the longest two minutes of my life. I dropped my hands and sat on the toilet as my leg bounced with nerves.
"It'll be okay," I mumbled to myself.
A buzzing echoed as the timer went off on my phone. I grabbed the white stick and looked, holding my breath.
"Oh my god," I said as the word in bold letters stared back at me.
๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐
With the test in my hand, I walked into my room, placed it on my desk, and started pacing.
Derek's going to kill me.
"Rae,"
"I'm coming," I yelled, hearing my front door slamming shut.
I ran around my room, grabbing my bag and shoes, but paused when Addison asked, "What is this, Rae?"
I turned to her, and my eyes widened as she held the white tube.
ะตะฑะฐ
"Rae, this is a pregnancy test," Addison said.
"I know," I said.
"It's positive," Addison said. "You're pregnant." I didn't answer. "It could be false."
"I missed my period," I told her. Addison's eyes widened. "I'm two weeks late."
Addison blinked. "Who's the father?"
I swallowed. "That is something you are not going to like." I grabbed her hand. "Just promise me you won't tell Derek."
"I promise." Addison nodded. "Now, who is it?"
"Mark." I rushed out.
Addison gaped. "Your Mark?"
I nodded. "He's the only one I had sex with, so..."
"Okay, I so didn't need to know that." Addison grimaced. "I thought he was in New York."
I bit my lip. "He was. But he came to visit me a month ago."
"You're telling me everything," Addison said as she grabbed my arm.
I didn't say a word as Addison dragged me from my apartment into her car.
I should've stayed in bed.
...โค...
"I have your results."
I looked at Addison as I sat on the exam table, waiting.
"You want the good news or bad news first?" Addison asked.
"Addison." I started. "Just tell me."
She looked into my eyes briefly as I set down the paper with my results. "You're pregnant and only a couple of weeks along."
I looked up at the ceiling. "Do you think I'm good enough for this?" I turned to her. "Being a mother."
Addison smiled at me. "Yes, Rayne."
"I just need to know that if I go through with this, you'll be by my side," I told her. "Because I don't know how Derek and Mark will react."
"Mark will probably worship the ground you walk on," Addison said, grabbing my hand. "While Derek will be Derek until I knock some sense into him."
I grabbed my pager and groaned as it beeped. "It's Derek."
"Let me know if you feel nauseous at all, okay," Addison said. "Or need anything."ย
I nodded and walked out of the exam room. I headed down the hall shaking my head, trying to take my mind off the baby, at least until after my shift.
I smiled at the nurse and grabbed the chart of the patient Derek assigned me to prep for his surgery. I flipped through the chart, reading Derek's notes, and furrowed my brows.
"Invasive non-cell. With a history of COPD." A voice sighed.
I snapped my gaze as Mark smiled at me.
"That guy's pretty much a goner, huh?" Mark said.
"What the hell are you doing here, Mark?" I asked, looking around for my brother as my worry for Mark grew.
"I missed you." Mark smiled. He rests his arm against the counter. "I wanted to ask if you were free for dinner tonight?"
I raised a brow, shutting my patient's chart. "You flew from New York to ask me out for dinner?"
Mark nodded. "Dinner, or we could stay in bed all night." He brushed a wisp of my brunette hair behind my ear. "Your choice."
I stared into his piercing blue eyes, biting back a smile. "Subtle."
"Subtle has never been my strong suit," Mark explained. "So dinner?"
Before I could answer, a fist slammed into Mark's cheek, and he fell to the ground.
My eyes widened, and I turned as Derek shook his hand.
I ignored my brother's pain and dropped to the floor beside Mark. "Seriously, Derek." I cupped Mark's cheeks, turning his face at the cut. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, sunshine." Mark groaned.
I got to my feet as Derek rushed to him. "Go to the conference room." Derek opened his mouth, but I cut him off. "Go to the conference room before you get suspended." Derek clenched his jaw as he walked away begrudgingly, and I felt everyone's gaze on me. "Addie, go make sure he'll stay there."
She nodded and rushed after her husband while I rubbed my forehead.
This is a mess.
...โค...
I close the door to an exam room that I pull Mark into and press my lips together in worry. I pull on gloves and try to think of any way to stop Derek and Mark from getting into another fight. But I couldn't think of one.
What am I going to do?
I grabbed the syringe and pushed the needle into Mark's skin around the cut. I avoided his gaze as I applied pressure on the syringe before pulling the needle out and setting it on the blue paper covering the metal stand.
"Sunshine,"
I frowned, running a Q-tip over the edge of the cut as blood dripped against his cheek. "It's all my fault."
"No, it's not," Mark said. "I should have waited at your apartment."
I threw the Q-tip in the trash. "Does it hurt?"
"No," Mark said.ย
I looked into his eyes. "You're not telling him that we're together." I ran iodine against his cut before throwing it away. "He'll kill you, and I kinda like having you alive."
Mark frowned. "Rayne, I can take it."
"I know." I breathed, placing a blue towel on his shoulder. "But I don't want you to."
"Okay, if you're sure," Mark said hesitantly.
"I am," I told him. I grabbed the suture kit and looked into his eyes. "Do you want me to, or do you feel like showing off."
Mark smirked. "Hold the mirror."
I shook my head, handing him the suture kit, and grabbed the mirror. His hand wrapped around my waist and pulled me between his legs. I bit my lip as he carefully stuck the needle into his skin and moved with quickness while occasionally looking at me.
"That doesn't work on me anymore," I told him as I'd seen him suture his face over the years I'd known him. "But my friends might be a different story."
"Well, do you want to take me to x-ray?" Mark asked. "Or have one of your friends do it?"
"I have to go talk to Derek, so I can't," I said. Mark smiled, and I narrowed my eyes at him. "Be nice."
"No promises," Mark said.
I turned and opened the door before walking into the hall towards my friends. They all stared at me with questions in their eyes. "Mark needs someone to take him to an x-ray."
"Why?" George asked.
"Because I have to talk to my brother," I explained.
"I'm on it." Alex volunteered.
I watched as Alex hurried to Mark's exam room and shook my head because I didn't have time to warn Alex that kissing up to him would get him anywhere.
"McSexy?" Cristina wondered.
"No," Meredith shot down.
"McYummy." Izzie offered.
I stared at them like they had grown another head.
"McSteamy," Meredith suggested.
Cristina nodded. "Oh, there it is."
I pushed off the counter and headed to the conference room as George voiced, "Uh, just ah choking back some McVomit."
I pushed open the conference room and closed the door behind me as I felt my brother's gaze on me. I looked around for Addison, but she wasn't there.
"Where were you?" Derek asked.
"Suturing Mark's face," I answered as I sat across from him.
"Why couldn't one of the other interns do it?" Derek grumbled. "I don't want you anywhere near him."
I spread my hands on the table, looking at my brother and swallowing my nerves. "Look, I need to say this before you go on your rant about Mark, and I would like it if you didn't interrupt me."
He leaned back in his chair. "Fine."
Here goes nothing.
"You remember when you left New York." I started. Derek nodded, so I continued. "A month after you left, Swayer dumped me after I confronted her that she cheated on me."
"I don't..."
I gave him a pointed look, and Derek closed his mouth. "Well, that night..." I paused, bracing myself for the fallout, whatever it might be. "Mark and I slept together."
Derek went still and waited since there wasn't to do but let Derek process this bombshell.
"I'd kill him," Derek growled.
"Look, after it happened, we both swore it would never happen again," I explained. "Because Mark knew that he lost you but that you would kill him if you ever found out."
"I hate that he's smart," Derek grumbled.
I ignored him. "And it didn't till three weeks later and didn't stop for four months. It was completely causal." I paused. "Until it wasn't." Derek gripped the table. "I know you hate him for what he did, but I'm not saying what he did is right. But I knew what he was when I got involved with him, Derek."
"What are you saying?" Derek asked.
"Mark and I are sort of dating." I rushed out.
Derek shook his head. "No."
"He makes me happy, Derek." I pleaded, trying to get him to understand.
"Do you know what he did to me?" Derek argued, getting to his feet.
I looked at my brother as he paced the room. "Everyone knows Derek." I got to my feet. "If I didn't, I'm sure everyone in the family would tell me. You're the golden child. The who can't do any wrong." I placed my hands on my hips. "I'm the black sheep that nobody wanted."
"That's not true," Derek said.
"Really?" I scoffed. "Our sisters never wanted me in the family. They couldn't believe that mom adopted me." I blinked back the tears in my eyes. "That wasn't a good one. How about they blame me for your dad's death."
Derek frowned. "No, they don't."
"Yes, they do because they remind me every time I see them that he would have been alive if they just let the robber shoot me," I said. A tear fell down my cheek. "I was only six." Derek stared at me, unmoving, and I wiped my cheek. "He sees me, Derek. Sees me." I walk around the table. "He's different with me. I know you disapprove, and you'll hate me like the rest of our family."
"I can't support this. I can't forgive him." Derek said. "I won't stand by and watch him break your heart."
I swallowed a sob before it could escape my throat. "I know. But I wished you could at least see my side, especially after everything you went through with Meredith."
I opened the door and walked out of the room and away from my brother.
I can't tell himโeither of them.
...โค...
"Did you and my brother get into another fight?"
"No, sunshine."
I pulled the door open wider and let Mark into my apartment. I closed the door and stared at him as he shrugged off his leather jacket. "Didn't you both operate on the kid with craniodiaphyseal dysplasia?"
"Yeah," Mark sighed. "He died."
I walked over to him. "I'm sorry."
"Thanks," Mark said as he turned, looking at me. "Derek gave me a few choice words after the surgery."
I had an idea from my talk with my brother earlier. "Mark..."
"I know that I betrayed him," Mark interjected. "It was stupid, and if I could go back, I would. But it led me to you, sunshine."
I felt at a loss for words because, in the back of my mind, I thought this thing between Mark and me wouldn't last, especially after what my brother said today. I started having second thoughts.
"He's your brother, but you're my everything." Mark breathed, cupping my cheek.
I blinked in surprise. "What are you saying, Mark?"
"I'm saying," Mark started. "That I'm not going anywhere."
I grabbed his shirt and pulled him to me. My lips slammed against him as I kissed in a way that I never had before.
I didn't know when, but Mark meant something to me, and I told myself that after Swayer, I would guard myself. It was challenging with Mark because what I felt for him was different than with Swayer.ย
It was more intense, and most of the time, that scared me.
I pulled back and peered at him through my lashes, staring at his blue eyes. "Promise me one thing."
"Anything." Mark breathed, bringing his other hand up to cup my cheeks.
I searched his eyes. "Don't hurt me."
"Never," Mark promised as he rested his forehead against mine.
"I'm going to hold you to that," I said as Mark pulled me into his arms.ย
