049: PHONECALL

"What do you want?" The voice
spoke, irritated and coarse.

"I wanted to talk to my
best friend." The other held
her thumb nail between her
teeth as she spoke.

"Nice try, you lost that
title when you lied to me."
The young woman's tone rose,
fuming with more rage than
before she picked up the phone.

"Maya, I-"

"What do you really want,
Riley? Because I have better
things to do."

Silence fell across both lines, distant sniffling hidden within the background.

"My mom wanted to know
if you still wanted to come over
for Thanksgiving." Riley was
clutching onto one of her
pillows for dear life, hoping that
Maya would choose to hold on
just a little bit longer.

"I'll have to think about."
Maya bit her lip and exhaled
deeply. "I don't want to miss
it, I wouldn't miss it for the
world, and I don't want to
upset your mom. But I don't
know yet."

"Okay." Her voice cracked,
she yearned to hug her best
friend and wish her new
friend away for good so that
it would just be her and Maya.

"Okay." Maya replied back.
"Is that all?"

"Yeah, yeah, I think so."

"I'll talk to you later."
Which was Maya's way in saying
goodbye. There was no way of
ever escaping Riley, no matter
how much she wanted to, she'll
always be with her.

"Yeah, okay."

"Bye."

"Bye."
